I wish u had added the most stunning fact in ur verbal description - TN took just 28- 29 hrs end to end when introduced!! (That is faster than current day Rajdhani/Duronto/GR). TN continues to be my most favourite train on IR. my first Choice train to and fro delhi between 2008-15!! And I call it "EMPEROR OF SOUTHERN RAILWAY"

My favorite train is Tamilnadu Express, traveling by this train in 2AC or 1AC is the ultimate...!
I traveled in this Tamil Nadu express within one month when it is launched. That time this train departs 7:00 am and arrive New Delhi next day 12:30pm 28.5hrs total travel time. Due to some accidents and track weakness, travel time increased. Initially this train had AC Chair car compartments with TV facilities. Nice to travel watching film songs. But very soon all TVs stolen at New Delhi maintenance yard at that time.

If you are traveling north a.c coaches are best you can avoid hawkers., Unauthorised person entering the coaches etc.
When Tamilnadu Nadu Express started in 80s the train used to leave central at 8.30 AM and stops only at Vijayawada, Nagpur, Bhopal, jhansi, itarsi, Agra . Later they have changed the timings. Once it also met with an accident. These are my old memories. I have not yet travelled in this train. Hope to travel one day.

IR has nearly destroyed this train in NCR, where from one of the fastest non-raj train between BPL and NDLS and vice versa its the slowest now, slower than even Malwa express. But good coverage of this great train!!, thanks
@Insert Username it was the fastest when lhbs weren't introduced in railways with better average speed between state capital to Delhi train ( non duronto/rajdhani). Post lhb they completely screwed up this train. Now AP express has the best average
@Insert Username rofl that is bcz long distance trains except duronto rajdhani have SLACK TIME compared to short distance train and your comparison to vaigai is completely absurd( including guruvayoor exp). It's like comparing madurai Tejas and mumbai rajdhani 😂😂. You can compare this with pandiyan express since it's in the same course. And vaigai average speed is still 67 kmhr and guruvayoor exp is less than 60. The least train frequency is between Chennai egmore and south districts in Tamil nadu. Get facts with rightful explanations.
@Insert Username travel in tn express and check the terrain of entire journey and as I've mentioned earlier there is also slack time. Speed upgradation is still yet completely done for tn express. Rajdhani duranto are premium trains. Tn express is not premium train but was a speed king earlier. Imagine 440 + kms in 5.30 hrs by a non premium train. Premium trains have speed upto 130 kmph. Tn has 110 only except few places for 120.

The locomotive that pulls this masterpiece is a WAP-7 (Wide gauge aka Broad gauge AC electric powered Passenger train 7th generation model introduced in 2001) engine made in Chittaranjan locomotive Works, Chittaranjan, West Bengal near Asansol. It was modified in India from the WAG-9 locomotive (gear ratio adjusted for fast speed Passenger version from heavy hauling Goods version) originally made by ABB Switzerland. The speed limit is set at 140 kmph as the safe limit. Another ABB Swiss made locomotive WAP-5 has an upper speed limit of 200 kmph but tested upto 160 kmph. The WAP-7 has a higher acceleration compared to WAP-5 which is designed for speed. The 7th generation engine is advantageous since it uses Head on Generation or HOG meaning all the power required for operating the train (the 6500 HP engine, power and Air-conditioning to the coaches comes from the Pantograph extracting the power from the 25 KV lines above the train. Non HOG locomotives requires another Diesel generator ( End on Generation) separately in the train for the power requirements. WAP-5 and WAP-7 are used to pull the premier trains like Rajdhanis, Shathabthis and Durontos and long haul non premier trains like the TN express.

IR will give preference only to Bangalore city like hyped metero, hyped Bangalore NZM rajadhani express. however IR higher authorities should realise that TN and GT should be given top priority since TN in the initial days covered Delhi faster than the present duronto and rajdhani that runs between MAS and NZM and GT was the only connecting train in the initial days to and from south which even most of the Bangalore used to take.
On an end note i travelled to vijayawada from madras central by this prestigious train on 21.2.22 and I was overwhelmed and ecstatic due to the extreme high speed with which it covered the distance of 440 kms non stop in 5.30 hours.
I would love to prefer always a non stop train instead of stopping at all stations
Someone is Butthurt :):).. Bangalore was neglected because it was seen as step city compared to Chennai by Southern Railways ( which is based in Chennai) and hence treated every city in Karnataka ( except Mangalore ) badly. Now Bangalore has overtaken Chennai is every possible way.
Bangalore Airport - busiest in South India and 3rd in India( soon will overtake Mumbai as well), Bangalore GDP > Chennai since 2015, Bangalore trains no longer take the Southern Railways required route which travelled through Jolarpettai ( which benefited Tamil Nadu and Southern Railways ).
Thank goodness for SWR. Finally Bangalore and Karnataka are getting its fair share.

Great video. Excellent comments. The Railways should introduce a luggage limit for SL class passengers at least in premium trains like TN, GT, Pandyan, Pearl City etc. Those who bring bulk items should be asked to load it in the luggage van.

I went in 1999 with family. That time TAMILNADU express arrival had the most epic entry. My dad says that the engine looks like a crocodile mouth. Yes it was ! So legendary and monstrous appearance . Dunno which variant was that but it was huge for me and for everyone else.
After so many years I chose the TAMILNADU Express this year ( 2022 ) powered by WAP 7. ( running 33 hours tirelessly with the same engine )
Enjoyed every bit of the journey and like some people told here it’s the only train that was able to reach the NCR within 1 and half days during that time itself and travelling in this train makes the passengers proud because I guess it was started in 70s itself on a dedicated broad gauge line.
It’s a prestige of TN and the only train running under its state name since 70s

This train was flagged off on 7.8.1976. At first it was given rakes
which was painted with the rajdhani livery .
The train was given a twin WDM2 diesel link end to end. Then by due course of time, the train was given WAP1 ( GZB ) electric loco link.
Currently, it is given WAP7 (RPM /LGD )loco end to end,.
Where did ERODE WAP7 GO? TN was hauled by ED WAP4,7
