Exactly, Neil isn't trying to be Buddy Rich, he's just paying tribute to him.
This is funny because no one on here has the skill to judge either of the two its a memorial solo for a reason, theyre both amazing just leave it alone. Its great stuff.
love the sound of the kit.
neil peart dude
# 1 on my favorite drummers list
ALWAYS!!
This is indeed a very musical solo. I love the way the late great Steve Marcus looks on in approval and turns to the guy sitting next to him with a smile and a nod at one point.
Yeah he's an awesome drummer. Glad to see talent like that come out of Canada.
Neil is a monster, creative, plays with power and speed, but he always sounds like rock when he is trying to jazz.
WOW that was incredible. Peart is one of the all time greats hands down.
Gotta be one of the best out there!
I have loved Rush since '79.
i love this kit man.
it's so simple but awesome.
One of my all time favorite video...
he has been taking jazz lessons, was on his site, crazy that neil peart is taking lessons but thats how much he loves music
Hes just a wizard! Great solo!
great solo, if you look at his old solos and his actual solos you can see his improvements and how he developed an own taste, and thats why audience liked him so much, and his way of sitting in the drums improved a lot as well.. he is not buddy rich but he is neil peart, and thats quite something
You KNOW you've hit it big when the crowd recognizes part of your previous solos.
i love how he starts of jazz then goes into the yyz solo then ends with jazz
Lol... at 2:01 you can hear Peart's normal solo routine come in...
Awesome drummer playing another great drummer...classic...
O que vou dizer este genio da bateria. Precisa dizer mais o que. Simplesmente o mestre dos mestres.
I dont care what anyone says i wish i could play them drums as half as good a Peart hes fukkin amazing.
man chill out its a fucking solo and it was so sweet, Neil Peart and RUSH ROCK!!!!
simply amazing!!!!!!!!!
i have watched dotdadee preform many times over the years, right across the states and when he toured europe, this man has played with the very best on the planet,he knows what he is talking about, so maybe if some of you so called experts out there would listen to him, you to may also become good at what you do,i have watched him play many times and he is one of the most talented drummers period.
completely mind blowing!!
Yep! I saw them last year on the Snakes and Arrows tour, and the drum solo was even better than the ones on the Rush in Rio and R30 DVD's! Neil is the best.
OMG!! awsome tribute!
Amazing! Thanks for posting. RJ
so amazing
awsome my favorite alive drummer does a tribute to my favorite deceast drummer
First time seen this Vid. Thanks to the poster. Big fan of Buddy and Neil. A God whorshipping his God. Cool.
awesome insight there dotadee. I used to be a peart fanatic when I hit the drums. I mean what kid wasnt? we all learned Tom Sawyer etc etc. I eventually moved on to Stewart Copeland who still remains one of my faves but Buddy is the king. Seeing this solo here reminds me how much Peart has not changed over 30 plus years and he is really only loved by the young kids for obvious reasons.
cheer and merry xmas
i've beena peart fan my whole life, and always knew he played the BRM show... but never saw footage. this is an awesome solo!
FANTASTIC !
Good point about the videos. Anyone who says that they can "easily do anything that Peart or Bonham did" (actual prev comment!) needs to show proof. A friend of mine, who is a far better drummer than me, was over last evening and we were messing with Joe Morello's wonderful "Take 5" beat. During a break, we put on Rush's "Digital Man" and as we each tried to play it. We marveled at how difficult the opening is to really nail. Ray Harber's vid is close, but Peart's touch on that song is amazing.
great stuff! nice to see him doing something on a bit less grand of a kit! you can actually see some of what hes doing in this!
este batero es mucho.loco esas muñecas no paran.esos rebotes son perfectos y tiene una calidad de composicion!! uno de mis bateros preferidos!
If anyone alive is known for massive drum kits, it's Neil Peart. He's a rock drummer. He said himself he dove head first into this project with no foresight or preparation so he wanted to impress, not overwhelm. Plus if he showed up with one of his full size kits they might have thought it arrogant.
luv that!! and I loved Buddy Rich too,he was so damn funny and a great talent
this is amazing!
Fantastic drummer!!
Let's jump back into the art that is drumming shall we? I am, for one, glad to see the greats giving tribute to the greatest. Rich, Peart, Portnoy, in that order are my favs. With honorable mention to Eddy Shaunassey and Tony Royster!
i love you too man
dotdadee, my good friend, you do not need to justify yourself, to any of the people in this thread, they are not educated about music to your level, neither have any of them played at your level, with great musicians you are undoubtably right at the top of your profession, and i salute you my good friend for being such a humble and understanding human being, keep up the good work, i for one have so much to learn from you.
Virtually dotdadee, we are watching Neil Peart play the drums. Enjoy it and stop comparing. Thanks!
If you can find it, and it is very available, the DVD of Buddy called Live at the Montreal Jazz Festival - the extended solo he does on "Good News" is amazing.
No rimshots, no singles, just an incredible display of buzz roll, accents, and stamina on the snare drum.
It's worth the price of the DVD for that alone.
Not to mention the 2 encores he does - "The Carioca" and "Time Check". One of the best up tempo versions of Time Check ever ~
Absolutely tasteful !!
0:50 is just purley amazing! I love neil peart!!
ive never heard him play big band stuff!!! that absolutely rocked!!! neil, if you ever read this, come find me so i can shake your hand and tell you that you're the best!!! love ya!!!
Buddy Rich The Best For Ever!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much for that :)
Thanks ...and by the way we got a Rush tribute in the makes and we're totally stoked ... wont be gigging til April or May .. we want to do it justice .. Happy New Year !!!
Bloody Amazing
simply the best!!!!!!!!!!!
i have never heard of this dave weckl but sure love Peart, Rush rocks!!! and Buddy Rich of course
dont pick on him! there will only be 1 BUDDY RICH! without neil peart, most younger people wouldnt know what a drum solo is. neil didnt perfect it, he brought it back to life.
You can SEE it hit the ground from the rear shot. When the camera angle goes to a rear shot of Neil as he's trying to catch the stick, look below his throne and you see part of the drum stick as it hits the ground.
I just went to buddyrich dotcom (the official Buddy site) to take a look at info on this year's Buddy tribute, again organized by Peart. The site is down. I figure (and hope!) it's just a temporary glitch, but it made me think about how important it is to keep Buddy's legacy alive, and how Peart's done more than anyone since Buddy's passing to ensure that. Neil Peart is a wonderfully skilled drummer, doing a great solo here, and introducing new generations to the incomparable Buddy Rich! Bravo!
sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me.
thanks..I've recently discovered this new frame of mind and figured I'd share it with other people.
He's perfect
great rhythm
Marvelous!
Oh and Rod drummer Neils drum solo is called O Baterista hes an all around drummer he can play any style you can notice this in all Rush songs just check the R30 concert they chang the style of the Working Man to reggea.
AMAZING!! I Luv Neil :)
Yeah they're brutal.Must have been a great show.Haake is truely one of the greatest no doubt. His rhythm knowledge & execution rivals anyone out there today-
apples to oranges!Peart is another kinda pecussionist,if he played like Rich, well then we got a Rich copy. i love that he did this..new respect for the man,& i am a fan! id love to see stewart copeland here too! if you wanna know how good Peart is just check out the pro's watching him in the background! that to me is justification enough and the highest compliment! we are all hacks compared to those people!i bet no one here was ever invited to play with Richs' old band!? how boutRUSH? anyone??
True Beauty right here.
Neil Peart Rocks!!!
The Best...
awesome.
very professional post my friend dotdadee,i have always found you to be professional and truthful in your work,if people idolise you i am sure you will be so humbled by this, but as a teacher you are right at the top keep up the good work my friend.
for god sake its a tribute to buddy rich. tribute! lets all have some respect for the late buddy rich, and for neil pert for respecting mr.rich.
I'm not referring to their solos. Im referring to the fact that Bruford started the off-time playing in rock, and made a career out of it.I was searching through Buddy Rich vidoes, saw this one, and gave it a listen. Did you ever hear the recording of Carl Palmer sitting in with Buddy's band at Ronnie Scott's, in England? It is available on Carl's anthology "Carl, do you wanna play?" double CD set. It also contains the concerto for percussion, which Palmer composed at age 22.
Oh yeah!
is the best
Viva!!!! Neil Peart!!!!
I heard the buddy rich 2008 dvd will be out in 2009 ? anyone exactly when Neil and Terry Bozzio my 2 fav's played the show.....anyone if they played swing type music with the big band and howmany songs each ? can't wait to get it.
love this! one of the best solo's on youtube
AH! Heard a sax come in early on the last note. Amazing moller and single strokes.
who better to pay tribute to Buddy Rich then Neil Peart...
fuckin awesome stuff here. best sounding cymbals n drumkit iv heard in a while as well.
They are Ludwigs indeed, this is from before he switched to DW. He is also still playing Zildjian cymbals here. That's a good segue to point out that this performance is from 1991, before he studied with Fred Gruber and did a lot of development of traditional grip play. No one would say that Peart out-jazzes Weckl or Smith, but I'm still astounded by how he is so dedicated to his craft - This video is from 17 years ago and his chops have only gotten better!
this dude is beast
neil peart is the best drummer ever !!!!!!!!
WOW!
if you can play jazz just as well as you can rock, you're AWESOME!
q genio...
Very nice
I neel at exelence... 10/10 by far!
Wow, very impressive.
OMG neil peart with only one mounted tom. hes still good
I just read on Neil's website that Peter Erskine gave him lessons on swing drumming before the Buddy Rich memorial Concert a few weeks ago. I have to give Neil credit for trying but I don't know how far he can go with it. Neil's natural inclination is to hit the drums VERY hard. I like him anyway. :)
el mejor batero del mundo!
have you people nothing better to do argue with each other? geeees ignore each other and listen to the damn video.
amazing drummer by the way. a BEAST!
soo true
neil peart is such an amazing drummer. i could watch videos of him all day
well, muttville1 my good friend dotdadee never claimed to be a living legend but you give him great praise with your comments, he will be so humble, that you called him a living legend,he is a very humble and understanding human being, and you could learn from his posts
condivido...the king on the kit
The reason why he is Neil Peart.
Neill jest genialny!!! :)
This video is indeed a great tribute to Buddy, a show of the respect that Peart has for him, and a great performance as well. It does no one any good for haters to camp out on this thread and bash Neil at every turn. So what that Neil isn't a better Jazz drummer than Weckyl or Morello? He is a great (not good) and versatile musician who should stick to what he's been doing - which includes both exploring new types of music and honoring Buddy's legacy. Now that's commendable!
best drumer
Best Drum Player Alive. Case Closed.
that controlled sound sound good on his kick.... think i might buy one....
Totally! That was the first thing i thought.
