Katie you invited comments; when I was 5 (I'm now 65) Sunday afternoons consisted of families with young kids visiting Greenwich, the kids running through the tunnel just to wave back at their parents on the other side of the Thames. Little did I know, it was just to give parents 20 mins peace. Kids also used to try and beat the old wooden lifts (an operator sat in the corner) by running down (or up) the spiral stairs. Greenwich back then was largely just locals, there were few foreign visitors. Happy days.

When a friend was working in Canary Wharf I used to meet her for breakfast after her night shift. We'd walk down to the tunnel and have breakfast at the Wetherspoons on the other side of Cutty Sark station, have a beer and eat, and then catch the bus back to Peckham where she lived. Magic!

My wife and i lived in London from '97 to '99 on our OE from New Zealand. We walked through the tunnel a few times on our adventures around London. On 2 occassions our walk was to the amazing sound of the the theme from The Pink Panther played on saxaphone. Taking our teeneage boys to London in October '23 and this will defintely be on the agenda.
I’ve just stumbled upon this channel and I’m so happy I did. I love London and am missing it terribly, can’t wait to go back when things get better but in the meantime I can learn some of its history!

I used to do this walk often, Greenwich used to have a fantastic little antique market but I think thats gone now, sadly. Still a lovely place though :)

Well worth the effort to do this and tick it off the list. Lovely views from the North side over the Thames to Greenwich and the Cutty Sark. The tunnel is cleanly maintained and well illuminated.
Thanks for the new video Katie. I’ve walked through many times and each time it’s always been rather empty of pedestrians so it’s strange to imagine it full of workers marching along on their way to the dockyards.
Yes i know what you mean, never been super busy (apart from the occasional cyclist whizzing by - grrr) so must've been quite the experience to have it packed with commuters!
The last time I walked through the tunnel that links GLA-occupied Kent and Middlesex was before all those eyesores had been built. Ah, those were the days as Mary Hopkin once said.

Hi Katie, I was wondering if in the course of your work you have met some interesting characters, perhaps doing humble occupations, but contributing massively to the fabric of London, It would be interesting if, with their permission of course you could speak about such people, and their lives and occupations.
It is relatively easy to find out about streets, buildings, monuments, etc but a lot more difficult to find out about the individual characters keeping things going on a daily basis.
You're quite right, on my walking tours and virtual tours I love sharing the human stories behind the landmarks and buildings!

It's a nice walk, and surprisingly unscary. Apart from Woolwich, there is also a pedestrian pavement in the Rotherhithe road tunnel, which I think Jago Hazard did a video on, which is very scary indeed!
Oh man, he's braver than me. Yes I suppose technically you can walk and cycle through the Rotherhithe Tunnel but I wouldn't recommend it, not least because of the fumes!

Have you heard the story of the time anamoly for the Woolwich Tunnel? Apparently workers have been said to have spent hours working down there but emerged to find only a few minutes have passed!
I have heard some mentions of it but haven't investigated it myself, curious indeed!

This tunnel is a little boring. On its walls, temporary exhibitions of paintings by artists or photographers could be made.
So much empty space is not used to demonstrate beauty! ..
Thanks Irinia! That's a nice idea, it certainly would brighten it up, I think the glazed tiles make it easier to clean but I'd prefer it colourful too!
Hi Kate, An example of something I'm interested in, is a plaque in Baylis Road at the back of Waterloo station. This plaque is of Dave Squires a road sweeper and unsung hero in my mind. Is this unique or do you know of more of these, or things like it?
Hi John, that's great isn't it? And funnily enough will be talked about on tonight virtual Waterloo and Lambeth tour. They're by the Southbank Mosaics who have loads of commissions around the local area including famous faces by the Royal Festival Hall
