Because the character has to make a choice in order to make an internal change of the lie, he or she is believing into accepting the truth. Does it still work?

It's always said that it's the external goal that drives the plot forward and the internal goal that makes it relatable. So you do need it.

everything is possible but having an external goal almost always makes for a more interesting and better story

But also the consequences of the character's action if he or she don't get what they want in their life.
I think that would be a miniplot. Because In a miniplot, only the internal values are at stake.
