I’m so happy that Cody has enjoyed this new vision of Hellraiser. I myself had my own apprehensions since I loved Jamie Clayton’s acting in Netflix’s Sense8, but didn’t know if she could translate into the cold dark neutrality of the Priest/Pinhead. I was wrong; her voice is perfect. Her delivery is precise, yet passionate. Even her visage harkens to the novel in being removed of any visible gender; just a being torn and stripped down to singular human pain and pleasure.
The new Hell Priest is what makes this new movie not just good, but amazing. Jamie Clayton deserves so much recognition for her powerful yet minimal performance.

The original is a near perfect film. Its horror is not the Cenobites but Julias degeneracy and her toxic obsession to her even more toxic brother in law Frank that ultimately opens the door for demonic energies to destroy her (unloved) family. Its core idea is the slow poisoning of the family unit (which most people regard as holy) which is absolutely brilliantly executed and possibly the best distillation of a demonic "home invasion" imaginable. I thought about it for years and I can't come up with an idea that is more creepy than that or even improve on what happens in the story. Julia and Frank are amazing characters and endlessly fascinating to ponder about. I hope one day there will be a TV show about Julia and Frank made by someone who actually understands how to make drama-horror about sexual deviants and toxic obsession. People who don't think Hellraiser is one of the best horror films ever made are simply unable to understand its core concept and what really makes it so unsettling. The movie strikes at the most relatable thing in existence and thats family which then is subverted through betrayal. A quick reminder that in Dantes inferno the sinners closest to satan are betrayers of family, country and blood. I totally agree with that. I'm looking forward to the new one but the addict story never works. It makes the character instantly unlikeable (sin of self harm) and put into a situation where they don't really have much to lose. Why care? In contrast Julia learns what's going on and still allows all the horror to unfold to the point where she can't stop herself anymore. Thats great writing! I'm still going to watch the 2022 version in hopes the director managed to coax something interesting out of it.
How refreshing to hear! I’ve never been that much into this franchise but am willing to give this new addition a try. Just can’t get over how amazing a year for horror 2022 has been!
To me it lacked a lot of what I liked about the first 2 movies. The cenobites went from antiheroes in the original to demons in the sequels to come, but Hellraiser 2022 cenobites are dumbed down to the point of being zombies. The main antagonist was absent for most of the movie, which eliminated a lot of tension throughout. A lot of the protagonists were just unlikeable too
Hellraiser was always my favorite horror movie, regardless of how the series fell off after the first 3. Just the concept got me into it. Glad to know this is worth checking out!
The complaints about the original not having the cenobites as the main antagonist is what made the film so great to me. You have this woman who will do anything for her lover whom she had an affair with. It shows the depths of human wickedness and how she used her gender and sexuality to seduce men. I also got the vibe back then that the box was more a man made device used to summon things from a hell dimension , not he other way around. I didn’t think the cenobites created it to kidnap and torture humans, I figured that’s what made them a kind of “anti-hero” status in the original film.
Sadly folks dont understand that the main character in the first film was Frank, Frank was the best villain and the writers for the sequels didnt realize that it wasnt just cennobites… or pinhead… it was writing a compelling force of evil that invited the cennobites, like frank… and they tried to make the franchise into some nightmare of elms street copy. This is why i personally enjoyed Hellraiser Inferno, the protagonist was the mirror of frank of opposite.
Personally i see hellraiser 1 and 2 as 2 pieces to story, got first half with first film, and 2nd half with 2nd film. The rest sequels seem so much more like side stories though did give credit in 4th for giving the puzzle box a origin story and lore.
For someone who never really paid attention to the hellraiser franchise I quite enjoyed this film, filmed in the right way was surprised, pacing little slow but that’s not a big deal but have already watched twice hope we see some more, compared to others and movies today it was pretty good. great review
The female version of pinhead looks and sounds creepy as hell. I grew up with the originals in the eighties but I’m stoked to see this. She looks awsome!!
I agree man. I was highly skeptical before seeing the trailer. But after that I was completely sold on her. And now this review has got me very stoked to see the movie. Great year for horror, huh?! 🤟🏻
Jamie Clayton was amazing as Pinhead. Couldnt ask for more. This version of Hellraiser no doubt is my favorite of them all. They could step up a bit on gore but I understnd why they took one step back on it. Still amazing movie. Already watched it three times! Every scene with Pinhead gives me goosebumps. Jamie is mazing! Movie is amazing!
The movie was decent. I loved the functionality of the Lament Configuration changing shapes and the different rewards given to you depending on which puzzle was solved.
I can understand you saying in the original film the coenobites where secondary. But that’s because in the original book the Hellbound heart they where just that. Frank and Julia where the main villains the Cenobites where just the beings summoned by the box servants of Leviathan and the hell realm. Pinhead wasn’t even called pinhead nor was it distinguished as a man it was actually sexless in the book it pinhead was just referred to as the hell priest.
@@CodyLeachYT but then all the movies that did focus on him from 3 onwards sucked. Because I don’t like how they changed him. Coz in the first 2 it shows the cenobites as not actually being villains they are just serving Leviathan. But from 3 onwards they showed pinhead as actually being evil and he wasn’t really he was a tortured soul that was stripped of all his humanity through pain and forced to serve.
@@lupine1986 Unfortunately why Cenobites eventually were confirmed to be demon villians when that was their never intended roles and alignment, endless sequels and comics which some written by Clive Barker even influenced him to point by time the book sequel came out Scarlet Gospels its geared towards established lore of sequels and comics. Gone is there original depiction and role.
@@Temujin18S I’m still looking forward to see this film the book and the original movie are some of my favourites of all time. It’s great they have been able this time that the hell priest(pinhead) has jewels on their pins coz that’s how it’s described in the book but they couldn’t do that in the original film coz of limitations at the time they couldn’t film jewelled pins properly.
Just saw it, and it was a whole lotta meh. I did not get invested in any of the characters, and the cenobites didn't bring the atmosphere I felt the film desperately needed. It felt tame and restrained in a really bizarre way. There's plenty of gore in the film, but it felt more like a cheap supernatural Saw rip off instead of a proper Hellraiser film. I did enjoy the actor who played Pinhead. She did a really good job and was by far the highlight of the film. Shame she didn't have better characters to interact with, but it is what it is. It's an ok remake that doesn't have the bite of the first two films, and that's fine. I was just hoping for something more surreal, dreamlike, hardcore, and engaging.
i love the new puzzle how when u solve it a knife comes up and stabs you, instead of chains with hooks that shoot out. i also love how whoever gets stabbed by it the cenobytes come to get them. the way the puzzle works is just better in the new movie
I watched it last night and thought it was alright. From a story perspective though it was just a teen slasher movie. Girl gets the box and gets all her friends killed in the process and survives in the end. I found the main character to be really unlikable and didn't care about her or her friends at all. As a whole it doesn't do anything to reinvent the wheel.
Great review, got me excited for it! I remember watching some random one and it was just a bunch of gore, no story, and like you said, I wanted to know more about and see more pinhead!
Glad to hear it's a banger. I was super hopeful ever since David Bruckner got involved. All his flicks are great and his segment in Southbound is probably my favorite short film of all time. Great review, good sir.
The Cenobites were never meant to be the focus of the Hellraiser movies. They became popular because they’re cool but they aren’t the point of the series.
Amen thank you well usually it can be a good idea to focus on set horror icon in your series in the case of the sunbites it was never necessary to make them to main focus cuz they never were the main focus
Always thought the point of the original Hellraiser is to show how humans can be evil. The Cenobites are supposed to be almost neutral. Not good or evil, they exist in a dimension where pain and pleasure have no distinction. The humans are the ones that use the lament configuration to accomplish evil things.
Unfortunately that changed with sequels, comics and even Clive Barker book sequel Scarlets Gospels. Now your just outright horror violent demented villians.
The primary problem with the Hulu film was that it would just send random people to hell. It felt weirdly unfair. The main component of a Hellraiser film is deservability. People who seek corrupt pleasures go into the labyrinth via deal-making, but regular people who interfere just die. Tossing anybody into hell just feels like the rules are broken.
But actually JULIA and FRANK were the real Villianz PINHEAD said in the original that they’re ANGELS to some and DEMONS to others… In HELLBOUND when TIFFANY solved the box, they didn’t kill her, so they’re not the real villains….HUMAN DESIRE from a place of selfishness is.

Man Hulu has been killing it with their movies, first Prey now this, can't wait to watch this.
Nice review ! We have to wait until the 26th of Oct here down under , it will show on Paramount +
Same here...the concept is so genius and intriguing
Good to hear Cody! Thanks for the review!
Really hyped for this film. Glad to hear it's living up to the hype. Really want this franchise to make a comeback so to speak.
For someone who never really paid attention to the hellraiser franchise I quite enjoyed this film, filmed in the right way was surprised, pacing little slow but that’s not a big deal but have already watched twice hope we see some more, compared to others and movies today it was pretty good. great review
I am really looking forward to seeing this remake! So cool you got to see it on the big screen ❤️
The director said it’s another story in the same universe. So while it is a reboot, it’s not a remake or sequel.
@@Cazz8203 yes your right😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@Cazz8203 let’s face it, it is indeed facts. 😂
@@davidw5532 You're*
This is when you’re happy that you’re not invested in a franchise
We get Hellraiser, Terrifier 2, and Halloween within a couple weeks of each other. Gonna be the best month ever!
Nobody can top Doug Bradley
Jamie Clayton was amazing as Pinhead. Couldnt ask for more. This version of Hellraiser no doubt is my favorite of them all. They could step up a bit on gore but I understnd why they took one step back on it. Still amazing movie. Already watched it three times! Every scene with Pinhead gives me goosebumps. Jamie is mazing! Movie is amazing!
The new Pinhead is based on the one from the book which is awesome. Can't wait to see this.
Speaking of barker you should review Night Breed. Its amazing!
The movie was decent. I loved the functionality of the Lament Configuration changing shapes and the different rewards given to you depending on which puzzle was solved.
I'm happy for you for getting the big screen experience.
This has to be one of the best years for horror in recent memory.
The Creeper said hold my beer
I can understand you saying in the original film the coenobites where secondary. But that’s because in the original book the Hellbound heart they where just that. Frank and Julia where the main villains the Cenobites where just the beings summoned by the box servants of Leviathan and the hell realm. Pinhead wasn’t even called pinhead nor was it distinguished as a man it was actually sexless in the book it pinhead was just referred to as the hell priest.
I get that...it just always felt weird that Pinhead wasn't the focus of the franchise.
I'm trying to temper my expectations, but you're not making it easy...and I am a huge fan! Can't wait to see it and I love the trailer!
Wait. Just looked too see if you had done a video on wolf creek(2005).
Iconic Australian slasher. Give it a watch it's worth the experience
Love your reviews! They’re spot on
I think Hellraiser 1 and 2 are the best in the series. After that they start to go downhill. I look forward to watching the new one.
The second one is so gory and has some really disturbing sequences...so good
Hellraiser 2: “Am I a joke to you?”
Finally! I have waited so long for something decent to watch!
i love the new puzzle how when u solve it a knife comes up and stabs you, instead of chains with hooks that shoot out. i also love how whoever gets stabbed by it the cenobytes come to get them. the way the puzzle works is just better in the new movie
HOLD THE PHONE you saw terrifier 2 ? I’m searching for that video now didn’t know it was out even for pre-view
You obviously haven't seen Hellraiser Bloodline. Centered on Pinhead and the history of the Lament Configuration.
Glad to hear it's a banger. I was super hopeful ever since David Bruckner got involved. All his flicks are great and his segment in Southbound is probably my favorite short film of all time. Great review, good sir.
Thank you for this Cody. Can't wait to see it.
I didn't want to get into too many specifics but that is still present in this one
Unfortunately that changed with sequels, comics and even Clive Barker book sequel Scarlets Gospels. Now your just outright horror violent demented villians.
I'm a huge fan of the first 3 Hellraiser movies (well I loved the first and liked the others), so I'm freaking stoked to see this new one!!
Really looking forward to this one! Thanks so much for the honest review.
Great review! I’m so pumped for this!!
How are people watching this? I have Hulu but the only thing available is the trailer.
When I heard Jody and the new frames on the new boxes im like ooooo me will watch now
Just stumbled upon you channel.. I like you.. Subscribed 🙂
Hulu movies going to blu ray usually?
This was my mom's favorite horror franchise so she would've loved to see this
You crazy!?! Hellraiser 1 and 2 were epic!!! The rest I could do without.
Super excited to see it! It needs to be October 7th ASAP!
But actually JULIA and FRANK were the real Villianz
PINHEAD said in the original that they’re ANGELS to some and DEMONS to others…
In HELLBOUND when TIFFANY solved the box, they didn’t kill her, so they’re not the real villains….HUMAN DESIRE from a place of selfishness is.
Whew I’m glad. If people are mad that pinhead is a girl they should know in the original story I think it was a girl
Hellraiser 2 is the best IMO. By far. Can't wait for this.
Ohh I'm so glad to hear this!
Hell yeah as a band we take a lot of inspiration from Hellraiser so to hear the new one is good is really a relief.
If this movie builds the world, builds the characters before we get to some kills that's fine with me. I'm a lore before gore type of guy
A man of culture I see.
It’s such a relief to hear that this movie ended up being a win! I’m so excited to see it!
It's only his opinion.

Wow Im jealous you got to see it on the big screen. I've read most of Clives books, including the Hellbound Heart & am really looking forward to this movie.
That's is so awesome to hear
I was worried the cenobites would once again, be an afterthought
Can't wait to watch it!
The first 3 hellraisers are great imo. I’m sure she won’t be better than Doug Bradley but looks like she may be close. It looks very promising.
