Liam, the feel of half or 3/4 swing is really your full swing. It's more a controlled swing. When you over rotate, the timing you use to rotate on the downswing gets more over the top move to compensate to meet the ball. This will also create hitting the ball fat or thin. The golf swing will vary from player to player. So this is a controlled swing where it feels that it's a half to 3/4 swing. There is only a 2-3 feet on the downswing where the power comes from with full extension of the follow through.
The half-swing is a wonderful thought process over the ball to keep the swing from getting too big and promoting a more pure strike of the ball! Thanks for covering this concept.
Ive used the 1/2 -3/4 swing all my life, i tell myself the less distance the club goes back the less can go wrong. Going to start trying out the stack and tilt golf swing this week as i struggle to hit the ball first and this may help. Golfers should try new swings you never know what might work for you. Great video keep up the good work.
I have only been golfing for 3 seasons, reason I call it seasons because where I live 6 months out of the year is snow for me. I tell myself smooth and easy and 80% swing. When I try to "smash" the ball and do 100% swing is when things go wrong. As others have mentioned it is about the timing, tempo and control. Nice vid Liam and Pete.
I find that when I try to crack a long tee shot, I tend to do more things incorrectly and end up with a bad shot. But, if I slow down and concentrate on my back swing, everything falls into place, and I can hit a great shot. In fact, sometimes slowing down allows me to hit a longer drive that trying to kill one off the tee. Enjoy your videos - keep up the great work!
Liam....after reconstructive surgery on my left knee in 1977....which required reattaching my patella tendon to the Tibia, repairing my torn ACL, and removing about 8 inches on my Vastus Lateralis, which was infected beyond being able to have saved the infected area. I had to learn how to play golf using a half to 3/4s swing. I ended up carrying a 3 handicap for almost 20 years.
One of my Coaches brought my over-parallel and over the top swing under control by ratcheting back my "full" swing to 80% of full. We used lots of video feedback cuz it's so hard to believe our actual swings is so bad.. lol. Also used a foam noodle to stop the arms and brought the hips into it more. Worked on rhythm and timing with loads of practice. Work in progress. Thanks for a great video. Robert in Winnipeg, Canada
I often do the "9 o’clock swing" with a 3 or 5 wood when I need to find the fairway. Always surprises me how far they go! Try a slight pause as you start the downswing to get your weight shift
This is what the whole ‘feel vs real’ is all about. When I was having lessons, my coach said to do half swings…. when we watched the video back, it looked like I was doing a full swing and he said that the momentum (and your brain) will automatically take you to pretty much a full swing. So whilst you’re not technically doing a half swing, the important thing is that you ‘THINK’ you are.
Two years ago I shortened my backswing. My hands don't go any higher than my shoulders and at the top the butt end of the club is pointing straight down at the ground For me, I feel like I have complete control of the clubhead. I haven't noticed any difference in distance but I have more consistency and taken six shots off the handicap. Now, if I could make some putts.........
Half swing testing always does this. We over-rotate. Usually results in twisting or bending. Maybe standing up? Half a swing quiets the body and promotes proper rotation. This improves timing and accuracy because the swing is quiet.😊 great vid Liam 🎉Pete. 👌
John Rahm half back swing and full follow through! Seems to work for him so might give it a try as I tend to lose the club face and slice a lot of shots. thanks for the video 🙂
Even though neither of you have hit a half swing, but Liam you nailed it on the last hole with Pete's second. "nice and compact". Not trying to Gorilla the ball, club acceleration late, much more controlled. Great video, thanks Team Golf Mates.
What feels like a 1/2 swing is closer to a full swing. Not the over swing, (beyond parallel), we usually get. It’s a more controlled swing that generates its speed through the zone, 12 inches before and 12 inches after the ball, rather than generating the speed at the top which results in an over-the-top motion. The 1/2 swing feel allows for more shots to be hit on the sweet spot.
I do a half swing and I'm in my 40's. I feel the half swing gives me more accuracy but of course I lose distance. It's a give and take lol! Excellent job with golf mates, love watching you guys!
Taken 3 - The scene on the golf course was filmed on the 9th green at Las Ramblas in Spain Liam. Fantastic course if you've never played it. 👍 As for short swings, Jon Rahm is the man isn't he -personally, I've always had a short backswing but the key for good shots to me is committing to a full follow through.
Older players generally lack the flexibility of younger players. We generally subconsciously compensate for this lack of flexibility by loosening our grip at the top to generate what our muscle memory remembers as a "full" swing. If we do this loosening of the grip, we then retighten the grip from the top and quite often this results in an altered swing plane and clubhead position at impact. I personally found that what our brain perceives is often significantly different to reality..........video your swing........you will be surprised!! Well done Golf Mates!! Another great video and thought provoking information.
Yes, trying to 'play' a half swing definitely works. With my driver I grip down the club grip one inch and 'feel' like I've got a shorter backswing and then hit almost like a punch shot. This is my 'fairway finder' swing when I'm playing really tight holes. I think one of the reasons this swing thought works is that you don't overswing so the timing back to the ball is better, which results in hitting the ball closer to the sweet spot, resulting in less spin and decent drives.
Ebay moves his body and loses his balance on his backswing (he gets to the apex and goes a bit wobbly) thus it's hard for him to stay on the correct swing plane for hitting the ball square at impact on the downswing.. he tries to correct it on his downswing with his hands and arms and it's very hard to be consistent doing that.. He's fighting that on most of his longer shots.. he fixes that he'll be consistent.. notice he is much more consistent around the greens where his backswing doesn't take him off balance..
This is a perfect example of the difference between "feel and real". I could swear I was shortening my swing by 2 feet when videos showed I was shorter by only a few inches. Crazy but actually better contact though I'm not sure why lol...
I've started working on about a 3/4 swing and narrowing my stance a few weeks ago and was amazed at the distance. Much better control also. Love the videos.
I think it's not a half swing but certainly not your regular full back swing (which can get out of control forcing the down swing plane to be off at club ball impact).. Controlling your swing plane back down to impact is what you are trying to achieve and it's very hard for an amateur to do that whipping the club so far back around.. very good advice Liam!
When Pete does his practice swing, he keeps his left arm straighter. His swing looks controlled, and fluid during the practice. When he is going to hit the ball, he ends up bending that left arm a lot. I think he's losing power and torque because of that. I like to think about stretching my hands away from the ball, rather than lifting my hands up in the air.
Liam says he is hitting long straight drives and Pete says your still down 2! Hilarious!! I find the trick is to make sure my shoulders are relaxed at the top of the swing which allows the swing to just happen. Which in essence is the 80% swing.
I’ve been using a half swing for years now since my back injury and it’s surprising that I’m not that far behind others with the driver. Worthwhile persisting for you Liam. It’s throwing Pete’s rhythm out though. 👍🏻🇦🇺
Hi Liam, Your swing feels like a half swing to you but it’s a lot more controlled by you. This has worked for me, but when you start to feel good about the swing the next thing you want to do is swing harder for more distance, and then the dreaded hook and slice come in. All the best stick at it.
I used to use a "half swing" , I'd hit it straight and long every time. I'm now using a full swing and I'm slicing a lot. Back to half swing in my game tomorrow. Both of you are still hitting with a full swing, Pete if anything is over swinging, the difference being your not trying to take the skin off it.
In a british golf book published in 1892, Horace Hutchinson writes about the half swing and relates that players get more distance from it...but they still won't do it. He even provides diagrams explaining why it happens.. The swing is longer. Hard to believe but it looks true. And I've been hearing this for decades. Also know the relaxed "slower" swing gives you more power. But people still tighten up and swing from their heels, going for the fences. I think everyone should just try it to see..
Great video as always boys I’m actually working on this has well as I fell my swing gets lost the longer I make it and seeing benefits to the half swing. Liam definitely keep on with it and I think eBay should give it another chance
It's about sequence and flexibility. Pete doesn't quiet turn as much as Liem, so Pete taking a fuller looking swing works for him. Liem gets "stuck' on the downswing if he goes longer than normal... but this is from an armchair golf instructor. lol
Hi golfmates I turn until my left shoulder is in line with the ball then start the downswing and my backswing is just over half swing works superb mate
paul , LIAM, have you tried this , as a fader of a shot ,I now move my back foot back slightly as if playing a draw , but then like walking after it inches downswing I go through so far that my body is past left side of flag , the ball goes straight, DRIVER ROGUE D SET AT -1 D ON A 10° LOFT DRIVER.
1/2 swing training tip, get one of those stretchy exercise tension bands, tie one end round your arm below your bicep just above your elbow, then go to a genuine 1/2 swing position and get someone to tie the other end (with slight tension) to your belt. Then when you swing as soon as you go past the 1/2 position you will feel the tension in the band. 10 minutes of that will help create a muscle memory for a true 1/2 swing position.
Played with a half swing all my life Liam .Ive always said you don,,t hit the ball golng backwards you just need to drive down into the ball and keep the forward shaft lean .Good luck if you carry on using the half swing mate.
To me all it looks like is your slowing your swing down which is something I was told to do when you start your round or in the practise area to get the muscle memory working, then you build the club head speed naturally as it becomes routine. Pete doesn't look like he changed anything he still was trying to knock the cover off the ball.
Pete has always had a bad over swing with the big hook, I've had the same issue and now think of a half swing. I've gone from 24 handicap to 14.6 in 8 months it works 👍👍
I play with a half swing been playing like that for a year, play of red tees on irons and pink for driver score has dramatically dropped nice steady swing and dont leather it great video guys 👍🏻
Not so much half swing as slow smooth swing.. I found the same 1 day playing links golf. When it's breezy swing it easy and it worked great.. I hit it further
Hi Liam and e-bay I have tried the half shot swing for the past two years as I have had two strokes and my left side is weak what I found is you cannot swing too hard you must go quite slow
Love this , have been doing this for ages, golfer’s biggest problem is ego, we all think we can smash it like the pros, the half swing normally is a 80% swing, so much more control and better results
I have tried the thought of a half swing when laying up and have hit an almost perfect strike, as you thought, I think it promotes a better through swing, cheers.
When I try a half swing, it really is more of a slowing down of my swing. Last round, I was struggling to hit fairways and told my playing partner that I was going to a half swing. My ball striking was immediately better and I was hitting fairways consistently. He told me that I was still using a full swing. To me, it felt like a half swing. I could definitely tell that my swing was slower and more controlled. It works for me.
I think it's the same process for a deliberately slow backswing, it seems to straighten my shot and improve the contact. However it's trying to do it consistently when it's not your natural swing, that tends to make the result on course inconsistent.
I went backed and looked at both your swings from previous episodes, Pete 95% the same and Liam 7/8ths, it always amazes me that feel and the real thing are totally skewed when we play golf!!!
eBay Pete should grow a moustache, wear a panama hat, roll up in a chauffeured driven golf cart, and he could be the Man From Del Monte! Great video. There's a lesson in there somewhere.
I found my own way of going to the range with top tracer hitting 100% trying to maintain target line then backing off slightly to about 85-90% power. It felt more comfortable and repeatable with better dispersion.
I've been taking half swings to 3/4 swings for years, it's the only way I can be reasonably accurate amd keep the ball in play. Works perfectly. I consistently play into the mid 80's. longer courses around low 90's.
Pete should try the half swing, he almost got it over this match 😂😂. In all honesty if you both stuck with it you would see improvement no doubt. Great video 👍
Liam I believe you're confusing 1/2 swing and just coming 1/2 way back? You were still taking a full turn Towards the target, and that's perfect! You both watching each other was throwing you off. Great drill for the range👍
Pete..Pete.. Pete. You really should give it more of a chance. Your backswing with the "half swing" idea was a lot better than trying to go full swing. Trust me. I am a golf pro/instructor.
Paul, Liam, you think your badly done to , well courses I play in Yorkshire as my handicap is now 18 at Silkstone I get 20 but I am lowest man so get non and yet seems I play better , I think more, so hit it off the tee then what is left what do I play best break it down where is the danger and safe parts , like our plate 2nd green , ditch before it bunker left path right BUT WORST OF ALL THE GREEN YOU HAVE A 1/3 LEFT TO LAND THE BALL OR IT RUNS OFF SHELF AT BACK AND WOODS , so I drive lay up chip on ok par is 4 but 5 is not bad.
I took the time to review all the video twic. Off all the shots both of you took, one or two were real half swings (3rd hole Pete's 3rd shot) and one was 3/4, (same hole, Liam's 2nd shot) all the others were full swings where the club was parallel to the ground over your heads. You were feeling half swing because you only gave 75 to 80% power to a full swing which is the way golf should be played. Check the following times if you care to: Hole 1 Liam 1:14 and 4:10 club horizontal above the head,...Pete, 2:18 and 3:21 same thing - Hole no 2 Liam 6:52/53, and 9:32 (Congrats, this one was closest to 1/2 I saw) Pete 7:35 and 8:37 Both full above the head - HOLE NO 3 Liam 11:46 full 14:51 and 18:04 were 3/4 - Pete 13:10 full 16:11 7/8 + 18:51 REAL half swing but no follow through this why he muffed it - Hole no 4 Liam 20:51 and 22:42 FULL + Full Pete 21;20 and 22:12 FULL and FULL 23:24 full again - Feel and real are different unless one tales a reference point while executing a slow motion swing. Example: fwd arm parallel to ground and no wrist cock at all, club about 45 degrees to ground upwards. Rotate fwd with a swift movement of the hips and make sure follow through is complete way over the head. It was nice just the same seing you guys putting in the effort. You are not the village idots, nor golf scientists; your eye or your glasses are just out of wack Ha ha ha from CANADA
All my golfing life (over 50 years) I’ve only ever swung half because of back problems.. The main problem for me is if I swing to quick the swing gets shorter still😳😳 So slow and smooth, half swing is a far better strike “for me” 😁😁 Oh and your “half swing” is way further back than my “half swing” 😉🤣
Half swing Jesus never seen more of a full swing in my life 😂😂
Liam, the feel of half or 3/4 swing is really your full swing. It's more a controlled swing. When you over rotate, the timing you use to rotate on the downswing gets more over the top move to compensate to meet the ball. This will also create hitting the ball fat or thin. There is only a 2-3 feet on the downswing where the power comes from with full extension of the follow through.
True. Little can change (consistency) from a shorter swing.
I had this exact same lesson and what I felt was a half swing was actually a much more controlled full swing.
The half-swing is a wonderful thought process over the ball to keep the swing from getting too big and promoting a more pure strike of the ball! Thanks for covering this concept.

How can Pete decide it doesn’t work for him when he didn’t actually ever do it???😂😂😂
Lol that’s so true
Yeah not a lot of evidence of half swings there pete😊
Pete's one and a quarter swing...same as ever....
It's that extra little bit at the end that messes him up every time....practice swings look great
Couldnt agree more!
exactly🤣🤣
Good lord these guys are so fun to watch. I've genuinely learned a lot too that has helped my game enough to shave some strokes.

Not shorter but slower getting Liam results. Great video again fellas
One of my Coaches brought my over-parallel and over the top swing under control by ratcheting back my "full" swing to 80% of full. I've been trying this shorter back swing for a couple of months now and I certainly feel it's improved my game.
Another Cracking Video... Biggest lesson I have made this year is just this...and LEAVE THE DRIVER IN THE BAG... Cheers Mate....
I often do the "9 o’clock swing" with a 3 or 5 wood when I need to find the fairway. Always surprises me how far they go! Try a slight pause as you start the downswing to get your weight shift
Happy Birthday Pete. Wish you all the best

Your first hole was definitely a full swing !! Definitely watch it
Must be good for senior golfers to protect backs and hips ………perhaps 🤷♂️. Great video very entertaining
. Thanks 👍

The picture in your thumbnail is exactly the same as my natural half swing. It's all about timing, as I have no problem with distance!
Great video Liam well done both of u some great ball striking Liam mate👍
Thank you
Great stuff as always.

I went from a John Daly backswing to a John Rahm when I switched to Moe Norman’s single plain.
Works great
Bet that works

Paul , Liam have you tried gripping down to logo on driver , I found on the range i was more stable in swing.
Great video lads . I am definitely going to try this and see if my score improves

LIAM ,
Slowing swing down gets more yards BUT in WINTER do the same mechanics work .
Paul
I have tried the thought of a half swing when laying up and have hit an almost perfect strike, as you thought, I think it promotes a better through swing, cheers.

Approves of this message!
Yet to see a half swing from either of you!😂 Better contact for Liam though. 👍
The scientist of golf eh? Well Liam looks like Mr Peabody 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Pete's half swing 😂😂
Trying...
That's it Liam I'm turning pro next week 😂 great tips ebay and Liam
I think it's the same process for a deliberately slow backswing, it seems to straighten my shot and improve the contact. However it's trying to do it consistently when it's not your natural swing, that tends to make the result on course inconsistent.
I went backed and looked at both your swings from previous episodes, Pete 95% the same and Liam 7/8ths, it always amazes me that feel and the real thing are totally skewed when we play golf!!!
Just shows the difference between feel and real.
That half swing takes the "loop" out of Liam's swing and it looks great!
Half swing lol. Pete's swing didn't change and yours was a full swing. All about confidence. Such a mind game.
Pete’s got a one and a quarter swing!
Tried it some months ago and it's suppurb. Accelarate smoothly. Good angle of attack and it works. Accuracy increased.
eBay Pete should grow a moustache, wear a panama hat, roll up in a chauffeured driven golf cart, and he could be the Man From Del Monte!
Great video. There's a lesson in there somewhere.
Ha ha ha
I found my own way of going to the range with top tracer hitting 100% trying to maintain target line then backing off slightly to about 85-90% power. It felt more comfortable and repeatable with better dispersion.
So did you use it next day in comp and how did it go?
Half swing? 😂🤣 School report; Must try harder. Great video guys keep up the great work 👍🏌️♂️
Love the channel, but I don't think any of them were half swings 😂😂😂😂!! Up the golf mates!!!!!!!
We said that
@GolfMates I would love to see a match against @Golf life legends, keep up the good work
Feel and real!
I've been taking half swings to 3/4 swings for years, it's the only way I can be reasonably accurate amd keep the ball in play. Works perfectly. I consistently play into the mid 80's. longer courses around low 90's.
The man from del Monte he says "qué"😂
When I had lessons this drill was to promote strike I still use it every practice session
Great demo of full swingers 😂😂
Cool-thank you.
Is this video before or after Pete’s lesson where he hit like a pro?
The main problem for me is if I swing to quick the swing gets shorter still😳😳
So slow and smooth, half swing is a far better strike “for me” 😁😁
Oh and your “half swing” is way further back than my “half swing” 😉🤣
I love it no half swings the whole video lol great job lads
I haven't seen a half swing on this video
You need to take a full swing, but use 50% power = more solid contact = better flight and possibly distance
