I have never heard a band that not only plays incredibly versatile, complex music, but is able to recreate it live almost perfectly...I'm blown away. Wish I could've seen these guys.
an amazing band with so many pleasing qualities! such amazing sounds! Deceit still sits at the top of my list by them! great video for a show from '81!
Trefor Goronwy, the bass player went on to be part of Charles hayward's next band, The Camberwell Now. It's remarkable that Gareth Williams, the 'non-musician' of This Heat required two people to replace him. This 4-piece version of the band did one tour and called it a day.
Die or DIY? here. Mediafire wiped all my files in the FBI crackdown; but I am slowmey re-uploading them all.Including all of the THis Heat stuff. So fear not, they will be available for download again soon.Especially all the live tapes.
I definitely recommend downloading the extremely rare This Heat (with Albert Marcoeur) - "Tago Mago Cassette "(canterbury dream cd028) at this site. Not only is it brilliant TH work, the Marcouer side is also outstanding. Almost all the other links there are dead, however.
just to clarify i was just talking about at the time of this concert gareth williams was in india!! trefor goronwys who played bass in camberwell now with charles, i dont know who ian hill is or what he's up to. charles bullen did an album as lifetones and a lot of the songs are on here and it rules!!! also the ghost trade by camberwell now is up there with an TH release imo, like if you get all's well i recommend splitting it up into the correct releases because the first songs are the worst
Jeez. I'd give anything to see them do S.P.R.Q. live. That and Health & Efficiency. On an unrelated note, I own the exact same bass guitar... if only I could play that well.
@joydiv76 That's a Peavey T-40 (pretty much the only good thing Peavey has ever made). They're actually great basses, and you can pick a used one up for around $350 these days. Dave Riley used one in Big Black...
What year is this? I've seen some say the guitarist in this line up is Trefor, which would make sense given the keyboardist (1982?). I was just wondering, I have this picture in my head of Gareth from these videos.
sadly, Gareth died in 2001 For those less familiar with these musicians, Charles Bullen went on to release some short run cassettes, Gareth Williams released 'Flaming Tunes', and Charles Hayward went on to become quite prolific, releasing multiple strong solo albums as well as recording with Camberwell Now and Fred Frith's Keep the Dog. He's also guested on some amazing releases. I'm sure other non-TH releases exist - these are the ones of which I am aware.
I'm trying to figure out if this was the original line-up. When they went on tour to promote Deceit, Gareth Williams ended up leaving (for some reason). Is that Williams on bass or just one of his replacements?
why are the people who filmed this stuff so short? all i see is twitchy legs. it's like the filmaker is just as nervous about eye-contact as the band are!

@povkilla me too! Deceit sounds as great today as it did when it came out. One of my favourite bands. First saw them in 1979 in Bournemouth!
Your blog is a credit to the human species. Thank you.
Thanks for posting this, this heat. Never thought I would see this band, Bass player is really good.

I'm just blown away by this human races collection of progmusic....More and more...
Saw them in Vera Groningen. Best band I saw ever. They were f****** great!!!!!!
Yeah! I hate it when music is challenging, too! The world needs more Coldplay and fewer bands who expect their audiences to be intelligent!
jihaa!saw them too in groningen netherlands 80,s..we still got the lp

Great to see/hear!

Please post info about the show if you have it?
There's a Calgary band called WOMEN that definitely have elements of this sound in their music.
What year is this?

working night is definitely my 2nd fav this heat song after makeshift, too bad they didn't record it properly
Amazing. I have a VHS copy of this gig, but it must be 8th generation. Where did Hayward buy his ascots??
sadly, Gareth died in 2001

too cool for words.if only they had made a dozen more albums.
I want it all
"Working Night," try The Last Live 1982
ladyx, this would be early '80s, possibly very late '70s? i seem to recall spqr on an album from '82 (?)
Sounds like guided by voices?
this sounds awesome .woot

I know that they at least have one extra musician to fulfill the role of playing the extra instruments that are included in the songs.
To say they sound like a band that formed a year after they split is missing a point.
brilliant!
gareth williams left for india or something, its trefor goronwy on bass and the keyboardist is just some guy (ian hill?)
yay!!
The first songs off of all well are the best...
EXCELENTE!
wow!
Year?
must take hayward 2 hours just to set up the cymbals...
why are the people who filmed this stuff so short? all i see is twitchy legs. it's like the filmaker is just as nervous about eye-contact as the band are!
ese final!!!
