I love your purchases. I live in California and went to Fine fabrics I was so overwhelmed. I purchased about $400 worth of fabric most of it was silk. I can't wait to see what your makes.
I’m excited to use it. I would love to go with a list of needs and pictures of patterns or inspiration photos all organized in a binder that would be a dream 🧵🪡
Thank you for watching!! I love the red floral think that’s what I’m using for my birthday dress! And thanks for the kind words regarding the husband, I will be sure to let him know he was spoke kindly after!
Thanking the YT geeks for recommending your video. What lovely fabric finds. I can empathize on the struggle it will be to narrow down which patterns to use lol. I hope to finallllllly get to both of those stores this summer. Every time I see a haul from Fine Fabrics I get more excited. Looking forward to seeing your makes.
So glad you found me!!!! Thanks for watching and yes narrowing down which pattern to use keeps me on hold a lot! Especially when using nice fabrics I went out of town to get 😝
If you ever get yourself up to Canada, you'll have to check out the garment district in Montreal. The older shops will blow your mind. It feels like a very European NY (not that I've been to NYC). Apparently Toronto now has it's own fabric/fashion district. Don't castigate yourself for not feeling prepared for the first time in one of those overwhelming spaces. Now you know what's out there and you got to work on your tactile feel for fabric. That's great experience. Those silks are going to be amazing for 30's dresses. So glad you got time away with your husband. Looks like you had a great time. Well done. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
1930s is definitely the way to go with that silk charmeuse--or anything else that is soft and drapey! Blouses, flowy skirts, that 1970s maxi dress pattern you picked out in your last video, or you could even up your lounge game and make a gorgeous robe! That beigy goldy fabric you were questioning whether it's lining or not...it might be, but as long as you like it, you could use it as a blouse if you want! Just stick to something flowy, and avoid anything with structure, same as the charmeuse.
I live in the Atlanta area and I haven't ever been to either store. Like you, a lot of my fabric comes from either Joann or hobby lobby if I shop in person. Usually I do a lot more shopping online for fabric. Thanks for the sharing your thoughts and a little tour of what to expect from them. I can see why you would be overwhelmed it's soooo much fabric! I'm going to have a game plan now for when I visit for sure
Thanks for watching! Same, I mainly online shop fabric but being so new to sewing I have ordered the wrong g thing plenty of times. I need to start ordering swatches! Check the stores out but Definitely go in with a plan! 😊
So excited to see your upcoming projects, I love that you're husband is so happy to support your sewing dreams💖 Beautiful couple, beautiful getaway, beautiful fabric😍!!!
Beautiful fabrics! I especially love the blue flowered one. Drapey, silky 1930s dresses would be perfect. And if you have enough for a blouse, too--even better.
What a wonderful dream trip! I’m so glad that you both had an awesome time. I look forward to seeing your makes. Next trip…. Try Garment district in New York! Happy Sewing, The Williams crew.💖🙏🏼
Glad you had such a wonderful time! My husband, as yours, waits patiently for me when we make a special trip to real fabric stores. It's fun to wander around places and have time and money to spend. Sometimes not having a plan for fabric is a good thing, too, because you get to play - and other times it is so overwhelming to decide what to make later! You had a wonderful trip and I am glad you brought us along. Patient husbands are good to have around. ;-)
Thank you I did enjoy myself and good point about not having a plan that could of been why I had so much fun browsing as I didn’t have a “shopping list” thanks you made me feel a lot better about it.
Looks like you had a great time! I will be heading down to Atlanta myself, I want fabrics that I can get locally. Thanks for giving the info! I like the 1940's early 1950's styles. Looking forward to seeing what you make!
Thought you would like to know that there's also a large fabric store (the size of a grocery store!) In Gastonia, NC just outside of Charlotte called Mary Jo's. It has everything from quilting fabrics, upholstery, and bridal silks and satins and tinsel of trims. It's just off of I-85 (I think exit 19, but maybe it's exit 17 - it's been at least 10 years since I've been there). There are some ok hotels in that area, on the cheaper side (think Red Roof Inn or Day's Inn). Another cool place I found out about and visited in 2020 is Floyd's Schoolhouse Fabrics in Floyd, VA. It's a little out of the way, but it's an old three story Schoolhouse with georgious silks and laces, quilting fabrics, all kinds of notions and a separate building with upholstery. Definitely worth the detour if driving from Charlotte area up towards DC or vice versa. I clicked on your video because I've moved to Alabama and really good fabric stores are hard to find. Thanks so much for sharing your fabric shopping trip to Atlanta. Those stores are now on my bucket list! 🥰💗🥰 Hugs from Cathy in Alabama
You might prefer Fine Fabrics because it is bigger and it is better organized there.I am there right now as I type this and although it seems there is a lot of fabric,it looks ...not as organized as Fine Fabrics.I'll leave that there..
I live in metro Atlanta never been to Gail K! I will be there next weekend to check them out. I go to fine fabrics all the time. There always busy. Your selections are nice. Looking forward to seeing what you make.
I got it from mood it’s in the neon video I did a few weeks ago I believe the link to the fabric is in the description box on that one let me know if it’s not 😊
Have you ever watched "The Good Place"? The charactter Tahani wears some beautiful dresses and you might be able to make a beautiful copy of one of her dresses with that border print fabric.
I found your channel today and I am loving your vintage makes, your "mistakes" and your dream trips! The large print florals remind me of an Oscar De La Renta dress. Thank you for the videos.
Thank you for watching!!! And yes that’s exactly it. I had it in my brain and on the tip of my tongue and it wouldn’t connect but yes now I remember seeing Oscar De La Renta Dresses with very similar prints. I’m going to look for a photo now lol 😆 ♥️
@@SewSewDrew I just looked for 5 minutes for the dress. I think it was about 15 years ago or so. I found some similar ones but I could not find the exact - there was a blue/white and a red/white. I will keep looking : )
I’m so excited you went to Fine Fabrics. I was also very overwhelmed the first time I went. It was waaaay bigger than I thought. Gail K is next in my list. Fine Fabrics staff carry lighters with them and will do burn tests. They did a burn test on a silk I bought because it was priced wrong and they wanted to confirm that it was silk before they cut it.
I keep screenshots of the back of patterns in my phone, as a reference for yardages versus fabric widths. At 75, I have a definite style for the designs I prefer wearing. Cellphones make it enjoy to store information! Plan a seasonal wardrobe around a dominant fabric color/weave/content, i.e., Blue/twill/wool. Maybe do a board of styles that you like for the season. Have someone do a color chart for you. I am your same skin tone, so “winter” colors (jewel tones) look great on me. For more information lookup “Zoey Hong” and “Diane Deizeil”, both on RUclips. I highly recommend both. You must go to a fabric store with a plan. That dark heavy weight poly would look good in a trench coat. Have fun!
The k you so much for sharing this info. I’m trying to plan out what I want out of a wardrobe now so I can quick making this random pieces that have no cohesion so this was definitely helpful!
I am on the eay to that Gail K Fabrics right now waiting on that Marta bus after getting off a long ride on another bus..Could have taken the train higher up....For the love of fabric...
Love this! I took my husband to Joann for only 5 minutes because he started following me around the store with the atomic fart app….omg… this was about 10 years ago and never again…
As someone else said first; The burn test on fabric works wonderfully! It can easily distinguish between artificial & natural fibers. One of the popular RUclipsrs went into some details about it in a sort of recent video. I can put their name & the video description, if you want. Basically, cut a little piece off, maybe at least half an inch square, but, probably not more than an inch in any direction. I recommend burning over a non flammable surface, like a heavy saucepan, or a steel sink. Also, holding it in a non flammable pinching tool (metal tweezers, pliers, forceps, maybeeven sugar or serving tongs, etc). You can use a flame from anything, but, a stationary small flame, like a tea light is great for beginning. Even if it's very natural fabric, it will burn fast! Maybe, have a bowl of cold/ice water & some salt, baking soda, or a fire extinguisher nearby. If you're sensitive, it's best to do it in a very well ventilated area. Ideally, I recommend touching it to the flame (not with fingers, or artificial nails, or anything flammable! ) then, when it catches flame, blow it out quickly. Smell it, and check out the "ash" (plastic of any sort won't make ash. Instead, it will be a dark, sticky/crusty blob. natural fibers will make "ash", a white, grey, or blackish powder, that crumbles and rubs into a dry smear, like powdered makeup. Many fabtics are a combination of both, and the burn will show a combination of somewhat crumbly goo, usually closer to one texture or another
@@SewSewDrew you are welcome! It should be fine as long as you are reasonably precious. If you live with unpredictable people or animals, of course, warn the people & shut away the animals & young children (especially long haired cats, and anyone who likes to "sneak up" on you)

Love to you and to your beautiful family!

@@SewSewDrew I know. I don't know what to with something that expensive that I will make when I start sewing again. I will love to go to that vintage store you went to in Charleston with the other sewist. Is it still open???
Since you know you love to sell vintage most vintage patterns if you’re selling 50s the skirts are larger no more volume in the garment so you wanna probably get at least 4 yards of something that’s tune to the 50s coming to the 60s you would be able to use less fabric especially now because our fabrics or wider in those periods of time fabrics with some fabrics for 35 36 inches 4045 inches now we have fabrics that really range up and with would make which makes your cutting out easier yet if you really like cotton here looking at a different range of with which makes your cutting out of your pieces a little bit different you may have to cut it out in different ways so the 4 yard yardThe 4 yard limit or necessity is probably what you want to get when you’re out shopping especially when you’re traveling and finding things that you really like you probably wanna get at least 4 yards for the kind of showing that you do that’s just something to think
