  • “Just study harp repertoire to learn how to write for the harp!”
We harpists love to tell this to composers. But, there’s so much harp repertoire and most of it is written by harpist composers who are generally unknown to the rest of the music industry.
Henriette Renié may not be in many composition textbooks, but her contributions to the harp repertoire are unparalleled. Both her pedagogical and compositional focus was on creating a beautiful, sonorous sound on the harp by using relaxed, supple technique and idiomatic figurations.
In this video, I review Contemplation (1902) and discuss the specific characteristics that lend itself to good harp writing. Be sure to watch to the end for my full performance! 06:19

That performance gave me literal goosebumps!! I think it deserves another listen ... or FIVE. What a great use of practically the entire range of the instrument too. That sumptuous low range is just ethereal.

Oh, thank you!! Yes, the low range of the harp is definitely under-utilized and I LOVE it in this piece!

Danielle- what a GREAT idea! The only way more top-quality harp music is going to come about, is by collaboration with living composers.
As the parent of a budding composer, this is great! (Oh, and I am a neophyte harpist, too- lol!)
