- Hoagy Carmichael, an important contributor to the canon of great American popular songs, wrote “I Walk with Music” in 1939 for one of the few Broadway musicals on which he worked, called “Walk with Music" (lyrics by Hoagy’s good friend, Johnny Mercer). Carmichael was a well-established composer by 1939, already having written “Rockin’ Chair,” “Heart and Soul,” “Two Sleepy People” and the classic tune, “Stardust.” He had many jazz musician friends, like Bix Beiderbecke, Benny Goodman and Jack Teagarden, and his love of jazz came through in his compositions.
“I Walk with Music” was the big ballad of the musical. It’s a beautifully written song with a soaring melody and many harmonic surprises. We hope you enjoy our version of it!
