I had that problem for a while now, that I would buy new clothes, and they never felt right... In part thanks to your videos, I decided to stop buying clothes, and just see how far I can get with what I already have. So far, I keep wearing the same two pairs of jeans, and the same five T-shirts 😅, and I feel fine! Maybe that's all I need?
Maybe so and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that! I'm reaching a point where I am feeling kind of an urge to pack away things I really haven't used as well, and maybe I will end up with much fewer things too. I also want to see more examples of "normal wardrobes" rather than extreme excess or extreme minimalism - I think I talk about this later this week...but seeing so many examples of "excess" I think also drove me to buy more than I ever needed.
@@Alexas.nobuyyearyeah, do it! When I still had more clothes I did seasonal capsules just to notice if I miss something. I didn’t. And somehow identifying my favorites to wear (not the clothing I thought are my style) really helped me reducing my wardrobe and stop shopping. I actually did it in my first pregnancy and my first year as a mother so I kept a few things I wasn’t able to wear then or that weren’t comfortable to wear while breastfeeding to try them afterwards but I didn’t miss them.
I’m noodling over these ideas and another one came up: planned obsolescence. If there were no trends, we’d all have the same stuff. In order for a business to stay afloat there has to be a good or service they supply. If everyone has the same couch then only people buying a couch for the first time would need one. It limits any potential growth for the company. Trends help to generate new purchases and generate new income and profits. So does planned obsolescence. If an item is literally made well enough to work but poorly enough to need constant repair (service) or replacement (goods), then this also generates high turnover, demand, and potential profits. Trends literally make items obsolete based solely on the idea that “it’s not cool now”.
I really hate planned obsolescence....I don't often say I hate something, but it feels truly immoral to me. And I guess by this logic then trends are actually not too far away from this, if they urge us to replace perfectly good things just because of a "style cycle" - so thank you for this added perspective! (And hopefully I'm not taking it too far haha) It's tricky since clothing feels like a "less impactful" category, and I'm definitely not trying to get to the point of policing anyone's consumerism or preaching about how we "should" have a limit of clothing pieces...but there surely is a reasonable point where "enough is enough". Even if the exact point might be different for each person and their lifestyle. It almost makes me reconsider that perhaps clothing rental services are actually a great idea, if we consider it a replacement for adding trends into our own wardrobes (and if the existing services were a bit more affordable too).
Sewing has snapped me out of shopping & trends. I'm trying to work toward a mostly me made closet, with only thrifted items to fill in holes (like tees). Talk about doing the work and finding your own style! I realized if I'm not excited to sew it, I won't wear it. Plus, with the amount of time and energy it takes to get a new item, the noise from trends and influencers is drowned out. I know sewing isn't for everyone, but if we asked ourselves "if I had to make this item, would I actually want it?", there'd be a lot less shopping. With that being said, overconsumption in the crafting world is very real, too. And between relying on thrifting and fabric sales, my low level shopping is a struggle. I'm on a fabric no buy this year bc of it. Fabulous video, as always! And what great food for thought!🙂
I LOVE this. "If you're not excited to sew it you won't wear it" feels like a really great test and the idea of a "me-made" closet is just so cool to me, even if it's totally outside my area of expertise.
This! I reduced my clothes mostly by wearing them down and now I notice that I don’t want to look for the „perfect piece“ anymore - I want to sew it! I actually sew a hoodie for a friend who never finds hoodies that fit her but as I broadened the shoulders and made it a bit longer than you could buy it while keeping the middle slim she now has the first hoodie in DECADES that actually fits (she’s sportive and has muscular shoulders from volleyball and two heads higher than me - clothes are difficult). And I think the fit is also one thing you really should make a priority also if you cannot sew or customize. You won’t wear things that don’t fit. And you wouldn’t sew then - so why buy them?
It's been about a month since I found your channel and believe it or not but I haven't bought any piece of clothes, which is rather unusual for me. Moreover, I haven't tried anything new because something changed in my head, all of the sudden, making me want to shop my own closet (which is sooo full of stuff). I really appreciate what you do for the community and your integrity. Your content is very useful and changes lives! ❤️
The part of slowing down the buying in order to reduce mistakes is so right. I buy even when something very little inside me does not feel quite right. And I will either a) buy and justify the buy to myself or b) decide NOT to buy but then go browsing for new things to buy instead. Either way, it’s as if the result had to end with a buy and it’s ALWAYS a mistake.
paused to say I’m so glad you did keep the pants! I refrained (or I hope I did lol) from asking you to reconsider in the comments to the original declutter video, and I don’t care for leather pants in general, but I remember these looked so good on you!
Feeling so inspired by your videos that I’m trying to start a no buy year in September as well. Thanks for everything you share, especially the vulnerable stuff. Love your channel!
Great point about low level shopping! I’d go periods without looking at fashion brands and a small change will pique my interest in another article of clothing. I’d go aww it’s too bad this is so interesting because I had such a good streak going, haha 😂 Excited for the style series! Also I also had those metallic wire rimmed frames as a child and I somehow was under the impression that glasses limited my style. As an adult I got excited that wire rimmed glasses came out in cooler styles and honestly, I don’t think they look bad anymore.
Yes now the wire-rimmed glasses are "cool!" I still don't have any and am unsure about whether I could personally feel confident in them but I think they look great on others, and, maybe in the future!
These videos are making people change their habits! They are making people think about their decision making process! And now we will get a fashion show! Cool! 😉
My leather pants is actually a jean jacket 😂 I can’t tell you how many jean jackets I have purchased and decluttered..it’s bad. Dark jean, light jean, medium blue jean, jean with a fur collar, long and cropped styles. I may have had every variation besides a trench jean jacket which I have debated purchasing lol I didn’t even realize I had this issue until you brought up your leather pants! I guess I want to be a cool girl and a jean jacket screams cool girl to me??! I don’t really know where that obsession comes from. I have one that I bought this year and I’m keeping it this time so that hopefully I will not buy another one ever again 😅
At least 90% of my wardrobe are second hand items, many of them decluttered from friends of my mum. Most of it isn't my style, but it fits me and it would hurt if these end up in the landfill, some of them still with the price tag on. If I had the courage to ditch them and buy clothes I like, I would look like the coolest punk/goth/lolita/mideval woman in town. 😅 right now I look just boring. But that's okay.
I love your boots! I have a pair myself that I still can’t bring myself to declutter even though they are a 7.5 and I now wear an 8. They are happy in my closet next to prom dresses and wedding dresses, and Navy Ball gowns. 🎉 It’s funny that fashion trends seem to have left me behind; not sure when this happened but it did even though I do somewhat care about looking nice. My favorite show was What Not To Wear…. because they would talk about dressing for what looks flattering on your body, not necessarily what’s trendy. Not all trends are for everyone and it’s a mistake to think so. That was a huge relief to me and I immediately let go of the notion of “keeping up” but rather “looking classic for my body.” I’m really short and pear shaped… bodycon dresses will never work for me, I have to watch length on tops and bottoms, I will never pull off leggings in public. My mom-style became very Eddie Bauer, and I like it a lot. At home it’s shorts and graphic Tshirts and Birkenstock style sandals, no makeup, hair braided. That’s it. My jewelry hasn’t changed for over a decade-Diamond stud earrings, my st.christopher necklace, wedding set, and fitness watch. If I dress up, skirts need to be A-line and just above the knee. Pants must be straight from hip to floor. Once I internalized my rules for my shape, it was like a fashion vaccine. 😁
It's funny - I somewhat internally dislike the idea of dressing to be "flattering", but inevitably when I wear something "less flattering" I don't like the outfit as much and want to go change. It's like I WANT to dress in a flattering way but also don't want to have done so "on purpose" 😆 why am I like this! I think if I did just accept it openly I would have avoided some of the purchases I "wanted to try"! Love the sound of your mom-style - if the Texans I live with didn't have such cold air conditioning preferences I'd probably wear something very similar!
I always liked buying things that spoke to me, that i found compatible with myself in some way. The buing problem started during the pandemic and I found myself hoarding stuff and overflowing my space. I have too much and that bothers me. Fortunately I am not that driven by trends and influencers so I usually pick up things that make up and fit into my personal style seamlessly. Nevertheless I have just far too much stuff. TBH thou lately I began to be more driven into checking out items promoted by ppl on the Internet. And now I have You and know that I just do not have to and don't want this sort of influence in my life. But that aside - I feel compelled to stop shopping and start loving things I alreary have, appreciate my own taste and take it easy with spending money needlessly. I plan to have a no buy September. O foresee problems and emotional troubles. But be it. It will serve me well.
Hey we'll be here to cheer you on and if you feel like sharing updates on how it goes in the comments please do! I am also in that tough spot of having too much, and actually liking most of it (influenced or not!) and now I feel the urge to simplify, but have to decide between things I do like and use. First step is to stop bringing things in, and I'll get to the "harder choices" later - and I'll probably share when I do on here too 😅
@@Alexas.nobuyyear it is hard ro choose when I use my stuff; and it seems pointless gettin rid of things I already have; the buyin needs to be cut down in the first place - that's my starting point. Thank You Alexa and the fam. I will keep You posted 🙏
I think as more people watch style influencer, more people have the same style because the biggest style influencer have the same style and its worst with minimalist style influencer. Somethimes i really think the " Video killed the radio star" can be apply here and can be replace by the "style influencer killed style" . Also can we speak on the new wave of influencer offering their service thru wardrobe app... what's up with that?!
Oooh the "style influencer killed style"...that's something to think about! I do agree that influencers have disseminated the same kind of ideas about style and now we do see so much of the same. And one might say it has actually pretty much turned into marketing because of the repeated exposure and suggestions to buy! And I'm not sure how I feel about the influencers offering styling through wardrobe apps...on one hand, at least they are working with the clothes people actually own already, so that's good, but on the other hand, how do I know that I'll like what a style influencer would choose to do with the clothes I have? 🤔
