Stunt Track Challenge: All 3 Gold Cars Unlocked by Default on Xbox + Changing Colours

  • This is a different kind of mod than the previous videos. Instead of swapping files around, I've directly modified the XML files that determine which cars are available in which parts of the menu, and whether they have to be unlocked. No file swapping means no mysterious "colourless" cars, so we get the proper gold paint jobs now.
You'll notice the cars aren't in the "gold" category, but the gold category is still present. It's actually empty now, and hovering over it will crash the game (weird that it doesn't appear locked when you have no cars in it). The real reason I moved the gold cars into other categories is that the gold category appears to disable pressing left or right to select another car, so even if you have multiple cars available in that category, you can't select them. The cars conveniently fit into each of the three categories well, anyways.
I'm not sure what makes it possible to change the colours now. Maybe being in the gold category disables the colour option? There's a "customizable" boolean in the configuration for this menu, but it's normally set to "true" for the gold cars despite their colour being locked. Either way, it's funny to play with that.
This is also on a fresh save file, which shows that I successfully made all the cars unlocked from the start.
I really need to get around to writing that archive unpacker/repacker so that I don't have to do this stuff by hand in a hex editor or worry about file sizes. I do have one more thing I want to try before that, though.

Seeing these cars accessible like this is incredible! This is what STC should’ve had instead of having cars locked to specific consoles. I hope you can make tutorials on modding this game. Because I want to attempt this on the PC version.

This is like a dream come true, nice work 👍
Also I like that you managed to change their colors, that should make it possible to partially recreate some of the real Hot Wheels cars.

Any chance there will be a release or tutorial on how to do this at some point?

I'm working on a tool to unpack and repack the game's data at the moment. Without that, the process is extremely manual, looking at stuff in hex editors, copying file data out to decompress, recompressing the modified files, and pasting that back into the game with necessary adjustments to related parameters by hand. Not to mention this method doesn't really support making changes that increase file size.
Once I have that tool done, I'll probably make another little demo video using it with a link to a download of the unpacker/repacker in the description.

I wonder if it’s possible to do the same thing but for the PS2 version

@@NS55gaming It should be. All the home console versions of the game have all three gold cars in them. It’s just that their respective builds have instances of their respective cars being used. So the other two of the gold cars that are not present are within the games files. Apparently you have to use a hex editor.
