  • The Fort Pitt Tunnel, which broke ground in 1957, carves through Mount Washington to connect western Allegheny County with downtown Pittsburgh. It is known for its skyline view on the east end of the stretch.

Passed through this tunnel every week in my childhood, from my parents' house in Wilkins Township, to grandparents in Mt. Lebanon and before that, Beechview. From 1954 to 1957 though, not sure how we got to Beechview before the tunnel.

I don't see the big deal. Does Pittsburgh think it's the only city in the world with a bridge that leads to it's downtown?
