Those look like snaps or some kind of fasteners. The silicone tube on the vacuum sealer is for removing (evacuating) air from jars & other rigid sided containers with lids (the lids will have connector ports / valves for attaching to the silicone tube to remove air from them). So that particular vacuum sealer can be used with more than sealable plastic vacuum bags. That should makes this particular vacuum sealer more useful & mean you shouldn't need a separate electric jar vacuum as well as a vacuum sealer. Both types of vacuums are useful in preserving food, you want to get as much air out of the bag (or jar or container) to reduce oxidation of the foods you want to store & preserve. The vacuum sealer then heats or melts the plastic of the vacuum bag to seal out the air.
