This is a setting of an extract of a poem called “Sengzhao” by the Canadian poet Robert Bringhurst. I first came across it in his wonderful book Everywhere Being is Dancing and it immediately leapt out at me. I love the way it so simply demonstrates the porosity of the body and its interminglement with the world. I set it to music in my solar powered studio during one of the lockdowns. I then asked the wonderful vocal ensemble HOWL to join me in singing it.

Between earth and the body
Begin there

These uprooted feet
Are the means
Of our shaping and grasping
Clasp them
The eyes are the hands of the head

Also, since I have the rare chance to be noticed, I have been wondering; why do you sing about May so much? It seems important to you and I'd like to know why if that's ok with you.
