    41:59
“All good, enduring reformation begins with ourselves and takes its starting point in one’s own heart and life. If family life is indeed being threatened from all sides today, then there is nothing better for each person to be doing than immediately to begin reforming within one’s own circle and begin to rebuff with the facts themselves the sharp criticisms that are being registered nowadays against marriage and family.” - Herman Bavinck (The Christian Family)

"What is man?" That is the heresy of our time. Professor Trueman's book, "The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self" is the best introduction to how we got here I have ever encountered. If you loved this talk, check out that book. (He also has a truncated version called, "Strange New World")

I believe that traditional Jewish theologians, such as the late Rabbi Sacks, dont see the Torah's requirements for ritual purification after certain sex related acts as associating sex with death. Rather it is because those particular acts either represent a lost potential for creating life (menstruation, nocturnal emission) or a brush with death (child birth in pre modern times), that they require ritual purification. Ritual purification separates life from death, just as the separation of milk (life giving from mother to offspring) and meat (slaughtered animal). It is a fundamental principle of Jewish thinking to "choose life", Deut. 30:19: “I call heaven and earth to witness you today: I have put before you life and death, blessing and curse - therefore choose life!”. As noted, Rabbi Sacks gave a previous Erasmus lecture.

Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan also points this out in his “Waters of Eden,” drawing from traditional sources.

@@deg3467 - indeed. His book on teffilin also illuminates the deep meaning of what some might see as a musty old ritual.
