  • Thirty days after our fight against the Sleeper, freeing the Valley of Mines from the magic barrier, we are summoned to the Necromancers tower near the port city of Khorinis.
Right after Xardas' introduction we are free to explore the island but the very beginning teaches us a lot of valuable lessons and holds many secrets.
Today we take a look at Gothic 2s starting area and how it still holds up even 22 years later.

I feel like Gothic needs way more attention in this time and age. In the world where games are obsessed with big plots and sandbox worlds, Gothic really shows that sometimes less is more. For me Gothic is still a perfect formula for an entertaining RPG game that doesn't feel too easy, too difficult or too overwhelming. Its minimalistic design provides a clear view of how the game works without the need of manuals, its small worlds is packed with content and the plot is tight and utilizes the environment well. We need more games like that.

We'll see how that G1 remake ends up. Maybe it's good enough to warrant a remake of G2 as well. I only require a combat system similar to Risen 1, and some slight graphical improvements. Actually screw the graphics, just improve the combat, and maybe tweak the rushed ending sections of the game a tad, and the game is perfect.

@@MrJenssen In my opinion Gothic 1 and 2 still look great. A little bit old though, the low poly assets did not age too well, something that could be quick-fixed with tessellation for the meshes and Upscaling for the textures.
There are a few of projects in the works that work on using the original assets and improving them or changing the renderer, that make the game look amazing:
DX11 patch, GD3D11, gothic reloaded, .etc.
Some people are also working on porting the game to a modern engine (the vanilla one is very clunky), which could streamline the process of porting modern graphic features to the game. I really hope the remake turns out good, i would also love to see some more content and things to do in the game, that do not break the balance or change the original atmosphere, particularly the mid-end game and boss fight.

I love the worldbuilding of gothic, it is tiny compared to many new games, however handcrafted with lots of well thought out layering of world features sitting top of each other and taking up the same space on the map.
It feels so much bigger, there is so much more to do and explore on a square foot/meter in this game, than the large stretched out maps you see nowadays.
On those you need a horse or some kind of vehicle to transverse the world, because there is nothing particular progressing the game and revealing itself between locations.
While in Gothic most of the time find new hidden places, when going from A to B on a slightly different path that before or even on the same path.

For now, I am looking forward to playing Gothic remake, which should be released this year, so this will be really big moment!!! Gothic 2 is an amazing game, but after playing through it 10+ times already it's not really the same anymore. The feeling is all used up. I've always been a fan of the Gothic series. Started playing Gothic 2 shortly after it was released (even before playing Gothic 1 after finishing 2) and what drew me into that world more than probably any other game was exactly what you described. The immersion and unforgiving tough start of the game really made you learn a few things. 1. save often 2. exploring the world to your hearts content is rewarding and 3. actually listening to the people and exploring the dialog options will give you info you would otherwise miss.

I wondered many times why some of those games are so close to our hearts ... it's every time closely related to happy times in our lives when we developed out perception of what is good or bad when we are young and we stumbled upon something your friends play or from boredom you just pick some random game like Mass Effect was for me. Gothic experience for me was fun time in my cousins house while playing Gothic 2 because only game I could run on my PC was Gothic 1. Personally I played Gothic 1 over and over again when I was 10 and that is maeby why it is my most favorite Gothic game. Mass Effect closely influenced my teen years 12-16 and World of Warcraft helped me to communicate with people and socialize in a way from 12-20 ... All those games have strong place in my heart. I also like Gothic 3. Maeby even same way as Gothic 1 ... Gothic 2 was great for me because I could came back to collony and explore its changes.
That is why it saddens me even more that today in gaming industry we have such a small ammount of memorable games. I catched myself realising that nowadays I never finish any games I play. Every time it bore me down and I stop even if I at start am enjoying that game. Elden Ring and Cyberpunk are are one example of that. I know it's not because of me. I know because after 9 years I played Mass Effect Remastered Trilogy and I felt in love once more and experienced those emotions again in my 28 ... and I finished all 3 games in row. They did not bored me at all. I don't know why is todays gaming industry so dead for me and I'm sure I'm not only one in that. Let's hope Gothic remake will be a good game.

    Hi there mate, great video.
Regarding your speech at the end, go try Skyrim mod called Enderal (unless you already did).
It is really the only game that hit me in the same way Gothic 1,2 and Archolos did. The authors of Enderal are big fans of Gothic games (they are germans after all) and it really shows.
Even if you are not a great fan of Skyrim engine, the gameplay is largely modified and the leveling system is similiar to Gothic games. There is no fast travel, no hand holding, exploration is hugely rewarding. And the story, oh boy... I will not spoil anything, but the story of that game is freaking phenomenal. When I was few hours in the game, I was like "ok this isn´t bad". When things started rolling and I jumped on the main quest I was like "ok this is going to be epic". And it was. As a one Gothic fan to another - go play Enderal, it will blow you away.
PS: video on the inspiration the Enderal took from old school Gothic games could be a good topic to explore in video in the future.

It was early 2000's. I had an old computer I dont event remember the specs of the computer. I remember going into khorinis first time killing the npcs from rooftops because I didnt know how to get experience. Then after some time I restarted the game. Literally with an English dictionary next to my keyboard. This game thought me English right after I learnt how to read in my own language.

i dont currently have the time to watch your video in its entirety, but here are my points about the intro to G2 and why it is the perfect intro. the setting in the tower is pretty grim, and so is the lookout. depending how thorough you are, you start your game with a knife or a wooden stick, both not optimal. you are then put into the world, with a lot of enemies, that you can absolutely defeat if you want, but also access to some that will instantly kill you. you get a feeling for discovery and careful exploration, that is instantly rewarded (finding lester which gives you an alternate entry into the city, finding the hidden cave..) you then follow the path to lobarts farm and get an easy task to fulfill, nothing really all that relevant, but from there two things are instilled: the way you go about your dialogues and how you complete quests is EXTREMELY important. what reward do you ask from lobart? do you let him rip you off? do you finish all tasks on the farm and get the cheapest set of farmers clothes? do you give that to greg? do you keep it? do you deliver the pan for (hilda i think?) the farmers wife in 3 days? or do you forget about it and get her mad? do you make a deal with canthar, which WILL come back to you? from there, you have at least 4 or 5 ways to get into khorinis:
    1) enter in farmers clothing
    2) bribe the guard
    3) enter with collected herbs
    4) jump the wall (a little cheaty, but absolutely doable in the games mechanics, so kinda encouraged??)
    5) swim through the harbor
and many many quests work like this: same outcome, but how you solve them is up to you - and it gains you different rewards.
next: the guards instill this feeling that you are not welcome everywhere - not like skyrim where everybody is just waiting for you to arrive - no, you are a wrecked loser, nobody wants you, nobody needs you (except bosper).
you then enter the safety of the town, and a feeling of ease sets in. you have been out in the wild, unprotected, animals will kill you, next to no supplies, and you can spend HOURS in khorinis when first entering it. it is a small town, but almost all npcs are relevant and interesting, are helpful or freightening, have quests inside and outside of town, quests you can do instantly and quests that you will finish 3 chapters later. and all of it feels like it matters. even today, i just love to roam the streets of khorinis and enjoy the waves in the harbor.
from khorinis, you leave again into the wild, but now the very vast and wide open wild, where there are many many things that will instantly kill you - the ante is UP. and all around the world, you meet natural acting npcs and all the little stories are laid out so well - and you are equipped for it because the introduction is SO GOOD.

The best thing that much of the starting area is optional. You don't need to go into Lester's valley, you don't need to kill the bandits. You can just go straight to the city and bribe your way in, scale the walls, use Canthar's pass or get the farmer's clothes. You don't need to help Greg either. Gothic 2 does little in terms of hand holding and essentially releases players into the world and only sets very basic goals. No one tells you how to fight, there is no way to judge if an enemy is too strong and you're basically told to find your own equipment.
I also think that the addon does far too much to make the game easier for you. In Xardas' tower you're provided with a belt and basically every herb needed for Constantino's apprenticeship trial, Cavalorn handles the bandits for you and later on Lares takes care of many of the enemies across the island.

7:40 This advice from Lester was only added in Night of the Raven, it doesn't happen in vanilla Gothic 2. And it makes no sense plot-wise. It contradicts the rest of what Lester tells you - that after the fall of the barrier he wandered around untill he found that valley. The barrier fell no more than a month ago. Even assuming that Lester, an ex-con freshly escaped from prison, somehow got into the city and got a job (well ok, we know that's possible) then why the hell is he now hiding in that valley?

    • @Wolfeisberg
      @Wolfeisberg 4 месяца назад

At first Lester says he worked for constanino some time ago (which could have easily been before he was thrown into the colony), and it would have been fine if he simply said try to gather herbs and see if the guards will let you in claiming to have herbs for constanino, but it actually gets ruined when he says that Constanino gave instructions to let people through the gate if they have herbs, it doesn't make sense for Lester to know that piece of information.

loved your speech in the end.
I feel so too, but doubt it will happen. Maybe some indy stuff.
Dark souls did great and was a mainstream success. but is not the direction a game like gothic was.
you said "gothic 1 & 2 respect the players intelligence."
this exactly is the problem. Gaming was still "kinda" niche in the late 90's, early 2000's.
I remember meeting like minded nerds and weirdo's that couldn't really connect with society.
We had games like this, quirks, passions. talked about D&D, games, physics, math...
Games like WC3, star craft, CS started to introduced more casual people into gaming. Computers were more common in households, consoles sold more than ever before, social media, youtube, smartphones, etc.
Today everyone is online. Almost everyone plays games. Even 58 year old karen plays candy crush in the subway.
the attention span has dropped significantly the past 30 years.
Since 85% of humanity is stupid and lazy, and almost everyone plays games, it is simple:
Games have to be understood VERY fast. They can't be too challenging. they have to reward you every 2 minutes to keep you going.
intelligent people and people with a healthy dopamin reward system are not the main audience.
