I felt the same way back in ‘78. I couldn’t understand why other people weren’t hearing what I was hearing. But those who get it get it. And here they still are inspiring people this way so many years later.

I know what you're saying. In '77 in my first car I had the 8-track of 2112. I really dove deeper into them with "The Farewell to Kings" album. I've been hooked ever since. Plus seeing them in concert (I think 🤪) 5 times.

That's about the time I got into Rush. My friends were into disco. I went in a different direction. But I also love the disco that came out at the time as well as soul and funk from the early 70's. Curtis Mayfield was a monster on guitar and a great songwriter. But Rush is something different entirely. Fantastic band.

this was the drum-kit that opened all of the doors for me. I was 11 in 1981 and saw my first show of theirs at the Meadowlands in 1982 on the 'Exit Stage Left' tour. To see this kit live brought by 12 year old self to tears. I was awed, inspired and amazed. I never missed a tour after that 49 shows later and 45 years of age in 2015. That's a lot of life and a lot of songs, tours and moments. I never met them and never had the desire to meet them. My relationship was as the fan/ customer and they the band/performers. It was a great relationship and as I got older, it seemed like they kind of became the kind of friends who would drop by every 2-3 years and you'd catch up for a couple of hours and then return to your respective lives.
But damn, how I miss these guys.......

Natural Science from the Molson Amphitheatre Toronto

I was privileged to grow up in the 1970's as a teenager and got hooked on Rush in 1976 with the 2112 album. Yes, I was engulfed in Rush and got to got to the 1981 Moving Pictures tour which is when this song/video came out. The show was EXACTLY like what you are seeing and hearing. It was F'n awesome. Alex, Geddy and Neil played their hearts out every show thru their 40 year career. They grew and changed as they got older and wiser thru the career. They are the cream of the crop in my terms along with Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Rolling Stones etc... Legends and Greatness in 3 men!
Check out Natural Science and Freewill as well in a live performance. More music to blow you away

The amazing thing about watching this song being performed by these three amazing musicians is that if you watch any of them throughout this song, you never see anyone just fooling around. Each of them furiously working throughout the song just to get through it successfully but still making it looks so easy. They were mastery on another level right up until the last note.
I have seen this video 100's of times, and it never fails to amaze me. I have seen them more than ten times live, and all of the concerts were amazing. They never disappointed anyone that saw them live. Xanadu was always a performance to wait for during their concert, but everything they do is frankly amazing. This song though is the Mozart of the day.

I'm 68...started getting into Rush when the Moving Pictures vinyl was released...saw that tour in 1981 (still have the ticket stub - $9.90) and every tour from then on until they retired in 2015. I took girlfriends, my 2 wives (not at the same time!) my 3 kids when they were old enough. I saw many, many bands in my life...none of them equaled the experience I got from Rush. I did miss Zeppelin, which I regret to this day...but hey...I'll live with that! Check out 'Natural Science', 'La Villa Strangiato', ''Between the Wheels', 'YYZ', 'Red Barchetta', 'Grand Design', 'Subdivisions', 'Limelight'...'Spirit of Radio', 'Freewill', 'The Trees'...and when you're done...just start picking anything that's left...you won't be disappointed! Loved your reaction...best one I've seen in a while!

As a new drummer 30+ years ago I started off being the biggest fan of Neil, everything he did. I've grown a lot since then and appreciated plenty of other master drummers. But I still get blown away by this song with this performance. The way he composed and orchestrated all these drumset and percussion parts throughout the song, not just to jam out but to add an extreme level of ambience and color to their most fantasy themed song... its just pure genius. And its still somehow a hard rock / metal sound. But the kind that haunts you after being abruptly woken from crazy dreams. Sort of like the poem itself

Welcome to RUSH! I was at the 1981 Exit Stage Left Tour in the L.A. Forum. Turned on to them in 1976 as an 18 yr old. I'll be 65 Sunday. I love these guys. My favorite all time. It was a joy seeing you get blown away like we were the first time. There is so much....what this video misses ( but there are moments when you really watch Geddy, not only is he playing Synth and his 4080 Rickenbacker Doubleneck Bass/12 String, he's also playing foot-pedals AND singing. When Neil joined after the first album, he took on all of the lyric writing. Alex and Ged were childhood friends and they had a blast playing together. 2112, Moving Pictures, A Farewell to Kings, and Hemispheres all incredible albums. Whether you do this on your Reactions or not....treat yourself, at some point....to start with the first album "Rush" and listen to them in chronological order to see how the trio told stories, always changing and fresh. We couldn't wait to hear their albums when they were released. I've seen them live probably around 10 times between L.A. and Seattle/WA State. " Closer to the Heart", 2112 ( actually written by Neil and a screw you to the record Label/Industry) that they wanted to control their own destiny and write their own music their own way. Concept albums. Watch some documentaries of the band. And, when you get to Clockwork Angels, It's Neil's farewell that people didn't really know. It's the last song on the last album called "The Garden". That's another live one to watch.

Everything you hear in this is played by the 3 of them - you always have to pay attention to what they're doing with their feet as the play synth bass notes by foot pedal (prime example, although you can't see directly you can see Geddy dance around playing them just before he starts singing)

    • @matth7475

      Totally!
Most that are mind blown from watching this often to miss that:
Alex is playing the 6-12 string, playing synth parts with his foot pedals (often)
Neil: Playing all the complex percussion parts. Bell tree, triangles, wind chimes, glockenspiel , tubular bells etc.
Ged: singing, amazing bass, keyboards, ethereal sounds on the synth and also foot pedals.
Watch again and again and look at both Alex and Geddys feet/legs to appreciate how much they all did as a band to pull off, in my view, the greatest live performance of a song ever?!!

7:50 Geddy is singing, playing bass AND playing pedals with his feet. Meanwhile, Neil and his plethora of percussion instruments while banging his sophisticated drum beats and Alex shifting from 12 and 6 strings. PLUS, the lyrics based on the classic poem by Coleridge. Aleksandar Živojinović, (born 27 August 1953), known professionally as Alex Lifeson, is a Canadian musician, best known as the guitarist for the rock band Rush. In 1968, Lifeson co-founded a band that would later become Rush, with drummer John Rutsey and bassist and lead vocalist Jeff Jones. Jones was replaced by Geddy Lee a month later, and Rutsey was replaced by Neil Peart in 1974, and this lineup remained untouched until the band's dissolution in 2018. Throughout their entire history, Lifeson was the only continuous member who stayed in Rush since its inception, and along with bass guitarist/vocalist Geddy Lee, the only member to appear on all of the band's albums.
With Rush, Lifeson played guitar, as well as other various string instruments such as mandola, mandolin, and bouzouki. He also performed backing vocals in live performances as well as the studio albums Rush (1974), Presto (1989) and Roll the Bones (1991) and occasionally played keyboards and bass pedal synthesizers. Like the other members of Rush, Lifeson performed real-time on-stage triggering of sampled instruments. Along with his bandmates Geddy Lee and Neil Peart, Lifeson was made an Officer of the Order of Canada on 9 May 1996. The trio was the first rock band to be so honoured as a group. In 2013, he was inducted with Rush into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Lifeson was ranked 98th on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time and third (after Eddie Van Halen and Brian May) in a Guitar World readers' poll listing the 100 greatest guitarists.
The bulk of Lifeson's work in music has been with Rush, although Lifeson has contributed to a body of work outside the band as well, including a solo album titled Victor (1994). Aside from music, Lifeson has been a painter, a licensed aircraft pilot, an actor, and the former part-owner of a Toronto bar and restaurant called The Orbit Room.

Saw Rush 9 times first at my high school in 74. Neil is "The Goat" The Professor here is like an orchestral percussion section chimes everywhere, triangles, temple blocks, glockenspiel, bell towers, tubular bells and his massive kit and he writes the lyrics. Geddy also is a goat there is no one that plays bass like him sing play organ and plays guitar which is the other half of his bass. Alex is the most underated guitarist flawless. I wish I went to more of their concerts, but I was lucky enough to see them 11 years ago. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the only time I ever saw them.
You seem to already know that Neil has passed away 3 years ago, but you can already tell Neil, Alex on guitars, and Geddy on vocals, bass, and synths are perhaps the most talented in their craft. Very few bands out there, past or even now, had similar craft and skill like Rush. If you want to know another band who is similar who Rush looked up to in their early days, check out Yes, as they are the OGs, or at least one of them anyway, of prog rock.

YYZ LIVE IN RIO!!!! You’ll be blow away!!
Context ….. that concert was not long after Guitar Hero II came out and in order to have conquered it you had to master RUSH YYZ. The young kids in RIO went nuts when the first chimes of YYZ came out. They even sing to this masterpiece of an instrumental!
    YOU’RE WELCOME! Enjoy!

I was at this exact concert, in Montreal 1981; I was 18. I live in Neil's hometown; and they played at my school, when John Rutsey was the drummer; just prior to the release of their first album.

Saw them twice in the late 80's - beyond words - no one did/does what they could do live - btw, maybe half that audience are (pro) musicians themselves - no one mixed rock, jazz, & classical styles that well - you want more Rush live suggestions?... watch the entire Exit Stage Left concert - best rock concert ever filmed in history -

Every time I listen to Xanadu I marvel at the intro and Alex making such amazing music with a guitar and...a volume pedal.
When Geddy starts singing the first verse, he is singing, playing bass with his hands and playing pedals with his foot. Give that a try sometime in front of 18,000 people every night.

I don't know anything about guitars and pedals so I may be repeating you, I'm sorry but have you ever seen his pedal 'boards' I think they're called. I can't remember which vid showed what's going on down on the floor. Looked like he had about 16 choices of things to do with his feet. They were my first concert, ON THIS TOUR, when I was 13. Unfortunately I was doing the things that people did at shows back then - partying. These little white things kept getting passed around from all directions, from total strangers. It was pretty wild for our age. Me and my buddy were the youngest around by quite a bit. Don't remember much of the show. But it was a great time. Met the best people on the planet, Rush fans!🤘🤘 Then I had to go find out who this band was that I just saw and I have been a fan ever since.

GREAT REACTION. Welcome to the world of RUSH, the best progressive rock band of the '80s as well as being innovative in the creation of new sounds. Every song is different and expect the unexpected. Geddy Lee - bass, bass pedal, synth, synth pedal, guitar, vocals Alex Lifeson: guitar, mandolin and synthesizer pedal. Neil Peart (The Professor): drums, percussion and wrote the songs. He passed away from brain cancer in 2020, also recognized by music magazines as one of the 3 best drummers of all time. my recomendation. Freewill, working man live in Cleveland after 2112. great reaction.

I started listening to Rush 19 years ago when I was 16...I had a few CD's of theirs given to me and listened to them until they were worn out...they immediately were then and still are my favourite band. Got a chance to see them twice on their Snakes and Arrows tour...First in Calgary and in Edmonton right after. So glad I got the chance to see the 3 of them live. RIP The Professor...

So glad to see you are officially on the Rush train. Welcome aboard!!! Best 3-piece band ever in talent, musicianship, and sheer command of the stage in live performances. Yes, only 3 men play this complex music!!!
I would definitely recommend the following list in continuing upon your Rush journey:
    - Working Man...Live in Cleveland from 2011 (original studio version was in 1974-75)...The pure sight and performance of three men in their upper 50's take control of the stage and perform and play like they were in their 20's. Since you love guitar emphasis...this is your target song.
    - Limelight - studio version
    - YYZ...Live from Rio
    - Subdivisions...studio version or live version
    - Freewill...studio version or live version
    - Best Intro Ever - Live version
    - 2112
    - Also...Neil Peart's Drum Solo Live from Frankfurt. He was The Professor...a pure musician and percussionist...not just a "drummer". Be ready to be amazed by not just his hand coordination...but most of all his foot coordination...basically his feet being completely individual in timing from his hands during segments of this performance. He was the master of this technique.

This recording was my senior year in high school. Caught this tour and 15 more perfomances. A Rush concert was like a religious experiece. Glad I got my son to their final tour as his first concert. Keep going. You haven't even begun to address lyrics in Rush songs.

Back in the day most rush fans had parents listening to 33 1/3 vinyl albums (some 45's) on a phonograph record player... Old stuff for us kids then, vintage now of course but things like Johnny Cash, The Kingston Trio, Neil Diamond, Elvis... A wide variety so when rock hit us kids it was like fresh gum from a wrapper. Then as kids listening to Led Zeppelin, Boston, KISS, etc., a lot of it was just loud and/or fun to play.
Rush came along and gave it volume (texture, creativity, a challenge.)
By the way when you commented on Neil playing the triangle, it was wood blocks & cow bells but he does have a few triangles in there, chimes, etc.
