There IS a lot of room between nothing and death and I need to do more! Speak up, tell someone, report. Thanks for opening my eyes to the bystander effect which I have been guilty of.
A very important video to watch. Not only is it imperative that we absorb this message, but this particular woman expresses the whole issue about as perfectly as anyone can.
Time to stand up! Great, thought provoking talk on where we are as a society when it comes to helping others. I will be thinking about this for a while. Way to go Kelly Charles-Collins!
I had to call the police yesterday because I heard domestic disturbance and I was the only one that said something. I saw multiple people walk past the person's apartment while he was yelling and screaming, and they did nothing. It does go to show that the bystander effect does exist, however I was the only one that stood up for the lady. Even though later the police did nothing, I felt like I did my duty to help protect the lady.
Kelly, a very powerful TEDx. An excellent overview of the bystander effect - the opposite of action is not inaction, it is indifference. Great learning.
thank you! For years, I am trying to make people aware of noise on our streets: the answer I get: it does not bother me. -Despite the pain, despite the fact that noise is an 'emission', no public health agency, no doctor, no politician acknowledges: that's the way it is... Sad: when you know that noise is assaulting us all from the womb to the tomb, I dont understand this apathy. Thank you so much for this.
Very thought provoking!! As a society, we have indeed become addicted to watching gruesome real time videos of mishaps & accidents. Re-socialisation is so necessary. We as adults need to teach our children better skills for tomorrow. Stop videoing and start assisting.
@Kelly Charles-Collins the thing is, not enough people seem to care to search for info about psychology and the roots of our problems in general (vicious cycles...). Well, maybe many are busy helping and saving others in practice...? Or kicking them while they're down, depends. Sorry if I sound a bit cynical, I just can't ignore the indifference and short-sightedness of most people. We need to face stupidity in order to solve it, just expecting people to become good and brave magically won't work. Videos like this should not only be shared by many of us (teachers especially), but be promoted by RUclips too. But it probably won't happen, and wrong behavior by the masses (of zombies, heartless and selfish people who believe they should only mind their own business) will remain... That said, it's understandable that ppl don't help sometimes, when they simply don't know how. But yeah, this is not even a good excuse; they should at least try, or call for help.
hello! This was an amazing ted talk. I am in Speech and Debate and I wanted to write a speech about this sort of topic and this awesomeness Ted Talk gave me lots of ideas :) thank you
I'm stuck between two worlds I help but sometimes I don't and it seems to always depend. However, I shouldn't care about the outcome even If I fear for my life at least I could help someone. I always jump in to help people being cyberbullied because I've already been through it. When it comes to physical situations as a male I'm told I should then I shouldn't jump in but I see how messed up that is as well.
This is a tremendous problem in the West. There's often a strange compensation that takes place in life: if you're really good in one area, then you're really bad in another and vice versa. The West is very good when it comes to financial success. The compensation is that we're absolutely terrible in the compassion and selfless department. In the West, anything outside of "me, myself, and I" might be tolerable but is in all actuality irrelevant. Keeping them honest.
"The opposite of action is not inaction, it's indifference." Wow! love that, what a wake-up call.
Indifférence wear inaction..

Is there any doubt that in theory it's Diffusion of Responsibility, but in practice it's Diffusion of Terror?
This should be mandatory viewing for every single middle, high school and college student, every year. Well done.
Thank you Kelly Charles Collins - you have me thinking about taking action whenever I am in a group. Great job!

Very good analysis of what is occurring worldwide. ❤

Powerful and thought-provoking.

Fear breeds inaction. Unless it breeds wars.
Excellent!
maybe I got distracted whilst listening to this but I do not recall her talking about WHY some act and some do not?
gotto also incite the crowd to step up and defend someone
But what does it mean when you are the type of person to respond. Especially emotionally driven.
People is crazy, if this is true I don't know any more in what type of society I'm in
