The Germs Aware Of The Burgeoning Punk Rock Phenomenon Especially British Bands

- The Germs were formed in 1976 by Jan Paul Beahm and Georg Ruthenberg, two friends who attended University High School in West Los Angeles. Beahm and Ruthenberg were fascinated with glam rock, while Beahm had a more than academic interest in fascism, cult leaders, mind control techniques and other esoteric subjects. As they became aware of the burgeoning punk rock phenomenon especially British bands such as the Sex Pistols and the Damned, as well as proto punks like the Stooges, the New York Dolls, and the Runaways they decided to form a band, though Ruthenberg was only a rudimentary guitarist at the time and Beahm had no musical experience. Posting flyers inviting two untalented girls to join their band, they recruited bassist Diana Grant AKA Dinky, and drummer Michelle Baer, and adopted the name Sophistifuck and the Revlon Spam Queens. However the expense of putting their name on T-shirts led them to coin a shorter moniker, and they became the Germs, The band had barely practiced before Grant and Baer dropped out, and they recruited a new bassist Teresa Ryan. The Germs also decided they needed cooler stage names, so Beahm became Bobby Pyn, Ruthenberg became Pat Smear, and Ryan became Lorna Doom. Belinda Carlisle calling herself Dottie Danger was brought in to play drums, though she had to drop out before their first show after contracting mononucleosis, and Becky Barton AKA Donna Rhia filed out the first proper Germs lineup.

Don the drummer had a long career after the Germs drumming for 45 Grave with Mary Sims, aka Diana Cancer. Which was another great band!

Decades later,I'm still hooked on 45 Grave's "Insurance From God".I was a little L.A. kid when GI was released.When first played,I had some gut feeling it would become legendary,so I bought two copies.Lorna Doom has to be the coolest punk name,Donna Rhia and Pat Smear the funniest.

Truly were ahead of their time I LOVE their classik recordings with Darby Crash!! RIP to Darby Crash and Lorna Doom. I personally think their reunion in 2006 with that generic singer was whack was nothing on par with Darby Crash seriously who’s man was that? They should’ve got Keith
Morris, Tony Reflex, Ron Reyes to front that reunion of Germs. But anyways I could’ve never got to witness the Musical Phenomenon that was the OG lineup of The Germs nor Plasmatics or GG Allin.

Why does the narrator pronounce "Bobby Pyn" as "Pee Why En?" It's pronounced as "pin," hence, bobby pin! The Germs themselves were most hampered by Bobby Pyn/Darby Crash, a terrible singer and drunken, lurching would-be Iggy Pop. The most AMAZING thing related to the Germs is that Pat Smear years later played on stage with Paul McCartney. A Beatle and a Germ together! Who could ever have imagined that?!
Pat smear peaked in this band and nirvana now I don’t like his music. Darbys lyrics themselves are poetic and he has a unique voice that makes him better than all the other bands like blink 182 or greenday that sound the same
