Ouzo goes together with deep-fried seafood. Since we usually drink it in the summer, instead of adding water we add ice and sip it slowly while eating. Drinking ouzo on its own is not something you would usually see in Greece.
It’s all about how much anise oil it has in it. If it has more, you get whiter color. But,if you put more anise, you have to keep the ABV high in order to keep it clear, otherwise, when it gets cold, you know ABV is low at colder temps,it gets cloudy and it can get blueish. So,ouzo is 40% ABV and Raki is 45% ABV. Sure it has more anise in it. If ouzo had that much of anise,it would probably have been cloudy. I hope you enjoyed it! Pair it with goat cheese!
If you put the water first and then add raki very slowly, they won’t mix at the bottom. They will mix only on the top. Another way to try rakı but it is a bit stronger
Islam wasn't always close minded. We all know there was a more open minded Turkey not too long ago (pre Erdogan) but I don't mean that. There were times when Jews, Christians and Muslims lived relatively free under Islamic rule, had free speech and western Philosophy and Science was held in high regard. Alcohol was very common in those days.
Great video, thank you for taking the time to do it. A few things, first about ouzo, it's a great drink to make cocktails, you can't make any cocktails with raki. But I also didn't like it when I tried it the way you did. Barbayanni ouzo is the one closest to raki, it's excellent, especially the black one, Aphrodite it's called I suppose .. %48 pure delight. Back to raki, I don't know what it was that you drank, but lion's milk is raki's nickname here (aslan sutu), so it was probably some exported raki. Another thing, though I'm not the expert, if you pour half and half raki/water, it's called the commissar double. So only rich and powerful people can afford that :)). The usual way to pour is, first the raki, then water, then ice. If you put ice before the water there is a danger for the aniseed to crystallize, and that leaves a greasy texture in your mouth which is unpleasant. I like it dry, the way people drank in the ancient days, in small sips - not in shots, and with water to wash away the burn. Actually there is a local version of way of drinking, where you have some variety of turnip water (called shalgam suyu) instead of water, but this one requires real getting used to. I did try it on an english friend, who was extremely liberal on that kind of things, but he hated it. Anyway thank you very much for the video, Cheers :)
One last thing about ouzo vs raki. I find it sad that you cannot make local raki in Turkey legally, only the ones mass producers are making. In Greece every other place, even taverns can make their own ouzo, so there are infinite varieties. Lucky neighbors,

Sadly the information about the word "rakı" is wrong. The word is not derived from Arabic. The word "rakı" derived from old Turkish word "arak" which is translated as "something that is purified" literally. Both derivatives are still used in Turkic dialects from Atlantic to Pacific. "Rakı" form is used in western dialects and "arak" forms in eastern dialects. The word "arı" also is anorher derivative means "pure" in Turkic dialects.

To me turkish raki, ouzo and levantine arakh are all the same drink, what I'd call raki is the one from the Balkans which is drank pure and is not spiced with anise.
Hello guys Raki is probably a good brand while Ouzo is a local brand You to get both of similar brand made in their country of origin and spirit/alcohol volume, then pour a full glass of the spirit in the small glass and then water in the taller glass .... do not mix, ice blocks can be used the spirits, only Try 90% Greek Ouzo then you need a water chaser OPA and break the small glass for luck
Rakı is stronger then ouzo, ouzo is supposed to drink with less or no water just ice cubes. and they are not just for after dinner the proper way to drink it is with either seafood, meat or whats most common is that you should have at least 2-3 small starters (meze in turkish) like tapas. and drink it with it Rakı and ouzo are not like other alcoholic drinks almost no one drink them without eating anything with them
Ouzo and Raki are both Greek. Raki was enjoyed in Meyhanes (Christian meze/alcohol bars) run by Rûm (Greeks) during the Ottoman Empire and was also produced at home in secret by Greeks, both Raki and Ouzo are rooted from tsipouro. Eventually Ataturk popularized the alcoholic drink among the new generation of secular Turks, making it a official Turkish dink which is dumb.
Not true at all Raki is not greek. And Greece was a colony of Ottoman Turks for 600 years. So many of Greek dishes came from Ottoman courts. That's why Greek food is not like European food or white man's food. If Greeks want to be European you should eat English or German or Dutch food which is European.
@@samtech9622 Yes Raki is Greek, there is not debate about it but Turks made it their national drink, so there is confusion. "Greece" which included a big part of Anatolia was not a colony but part of the Ottoman Empire itself and it was for 400 years not 600. Turkic people couldn't make a layered dish yet all of a sudden when they took over the Byzantine Empire which was the culinary center of the world, they magically produced all these dishes within decades? No, the issue is that writing about food recipes was a rarity in those times but the Ottomans were known to write recipe books because it was mandatory but with all things Turkish it was without origins. Modern researchers place most of the Ottoman cuisine’s roots in Byzantium and even ancient Greece also from Arabian and Persian sources.

I was given a bootle by my brother after his holiday in Turkey, I tend drink my spirits by shots following with the chaser, and decided to do a bottle with my friend before going out on Friday evening in Kingston. I remember Raki as it was the only one that my stomach refused to take, and I could not belive it! I'll never forget it.. I don't know why but it made me very nauseous hence I've being hugging toilet pan few times, same goes for my mate before we were able to sound the victory over Raki bottle that evening :), at that time for us it was this peculiar matter of honor that body have to follow mind decision even if it dosen't like it hahhahaha ohh uni days are over now and things changed since then but I'll always remember that personal fight with a bottle of Raki hahaha.

haha that sounds like a messy time! Cheers for the support Tom you legend 🥃
lebanese national drink Arak is the best made strictly from grape(blanc Obeidi or Merwah) alc and aniseed(from hermoun best aniseed in the world) ,no bs fillers at 50-53% and aged for 2 years in clay amphora jars, best ones are ksarak(beeka valley also make good wine) and ghantous abou raad
To me turkish raki, ouzo and levantine arakh are all the same drink, what I'd call raki is the one from the Balkans which is drank pure and is not spiced with anise.
Bulgarian variant of raki is mastika. Also with water
drown rakı mastika
Good choose man 😂👍
Thanks Mustafa
My favourite YENİ RAKI UZUN DEMLEME % 45 Alcohol,Sugar-free distilled five times 👌I recommend it to raki lovers
Solly mate you forgot about the meze and watermelon.
Hello guys
Raki is probably a good brand while Ouzo is a local brand
You to get both of similar brand made in their country of origin and spirit/alcohol volume, then pour a full glass of the spirit in the small glass and then water in the taller glass .... do not mix, ice blocks can be used the spirits, only
Try 90% Greek Ouzo then you need a water chaser OPA and break the small glass for luck
We are big fun of rakı , turkey trawels funny times😂
Raki is legend
You’re suppose to eat rockmelon and or feta cheese after a sip of Raki.
I would recommend you tekirdag raki much better then a yeni raki
Rakı is stronger then ouzo, ouzo is supposed to drink with less or no water just ice cubes.
and they are not just for after dinner the proper way to drink it is with either seafood, meat or whats most common is that you should have at least 2-3 small starters (meze in turkish) like tapas. and drink it with it Rakı and ouzo are not like other alcoholic drinks almost no one drink them without eating anything with them
because the difference is you guys didn't spill equal level water and rakı and also Mo spilled wrong way
Ouzo and Raki are both Greek.

Yes Raki is Greek, there is not debate about it but Turks made it their national drink, so there is confusion.
Not true.
Raki is not greek
No they don't use tea glasses. In Turkiye they have specific glasses for raki
evet çay bardağı kullanıldı kullanılıyor . ayrıca atatürk çay bardağı ile içerdi tüm rum meyhanelerinde rakı çay bardağı ile servis edilirdi.
Turkish. Yani Raki the best
FIRST add the alcohol then the water if u add water first its more stronger try it out
ben türküm ama yunan rakısı çok güzel içimi yumuşak ve keyifli
Red meat or grilled meat and rakı/ouzo is brilliant, the after taste 😋
Oh especially with fish
Did you know that most ‘Rakı Enthusiasts’ drink rakı in a Turkish tea glass?
Ohhh really?
tea glass, ice cube, fill with Raki
u shouldn't add water for a harder taste btw
Best job ever
Witam miało być po polsku więc..Panowie i Panie robicie kawał dobrej roboty by uświadamiać ludzi w temacie whisky serdecznie pozdrawiam całą ekipe no i oczywiście Urbana peace 5
Water first then pour alcohol mate
Çeviride yeni rocky yazıyor
They call this in Syria and Lebanon (حليب سباع) which literally means lions milk
So which drink you like most?
In Greece we don’t put water we put ice cubes or we drink it without water
Who drinks ouzo basically?
@@flukos79 homosexuels
Ouzo is lighter than Raki, that's why
@@Murat-eq3cr I won't even bother with you. Ouzo is something different. It's not famous at all in Greece
@@flukos79 I was very curious about the taste of Ouzo. I think I can taste it when I go to visit the Greek islands :(
You guys should try home made fig raki and turnip juice then lets see your face 😂
haha consider it done
I am from Turkey but i think that ouzo tastes better
