I used to legitly do this in Empire Earth, in regular matches (vs AI), at least that was my initial strategy, but I had to mix things up later on as I got better. In AOE2 however ... dang that is hard to pull off haha (in Empire Earth the towers only cost stone, and they auto upgrade with each era)
@@henrysmith1458 maybe you remember it wrong but... No they don't auto upgrade. ^^ every time the tower gets better you have to buy the upgrade in the capitol. Since theres basically infinite resources in the game it's really cheap but you have to upgrade it. Quote from the wiki on that matter: "They change appearance and Attack Type as epochs advance. Unlike other buildings, however, they have to be upgraded manually, by researching an upgrade in a Town Center or Capitol."

@roger kle for him to wall you with that many towers he is literally saying that he has beaten you and there is no way your are winning. It's the equivalent of building a wonder in a ranked match.

@@bugs1yb1ins I think when you're Turks you go for 15 range bombard cannons instead of trebs, but it would be a hell of a dance trying to outmicro MBL's own bombards as Alan mentions. Perhaps a mix of rams and bombards, but then again you need a lot of eco for that if you also want the meat shield for the rams. It's pretty much a scenario of "just don't let it get that far". MBL had already won before he put up the 1st tower, he just wanted to try it out since he had such a good lead.

I was watching the live. The guy actually got very pissed off saying that because Mbl lost to Hera in the tournament now he wants to disrespect everybody else. He was as pissed off as Mbl when he realized the bombard towers weren't in line 1111111.
I don't understand that. What does it have to do with disrespect? MBL just played better and had the map control to do this. If the other guy had played better it would not have come to this.
@@randomdude2026 I don't know if you guys know but the pro players don't always go against each other. A lot of times they go against 1700-1800 players who don't have a chance against them. It is not their fault, the problem is the matchmaking. If he were against another top player then it would be ok to do something like this if he played better, but against "noobs"?

One thing that's nice about the higher level 1v1s on RUclips, is that it gives you more of a chance to notice little things and point them out to us, like the idle villager in the beginning.
This strategy reminds me of my playing style. For the record, I only play against AI (I never PvP in any game), and I am very fond of creating intricate, concentric wall and tower defenses. It warms my heart to see it in a high ranking game. Also, one of the big changes that I HATE about the post AOC versions of AOE2 was the balance-based, utterly ahistorical nerfing of bombard towers' damage to rams. (They used to do as much damage to rams as bombard cannons still do.)
Also, I have been playing AOE2 since Age of Kings was first released when I was in high school, and I have never really grown up since then, at least not when it comes to AOE2.
Yeah I feel like walls are way more effective against the AI, at least whenever I'm playing against friends it feels like they have much more of a specific plan than the AI and just blast a hole in a wall with 3 petards or a ram in 10 seconds

Dang, my dad use this strats against the hardest AI on skirmish. My dad wasn't even a gamer, he just played city building games like Caesar III, and duel the Caesar... One day he asked, 'what is that game?' I was playing AoE2, my uncle installed it on my dad's pc and I've been playing AoE2 all day long. I thought to myself, "Surely dad can't play this type of game" but I explain the game to him and leave him to his own devices. It was back when I was only a 3rd maybe 4th grader, so my dumbass self would maxed everything first before attacking the easy AI. Seeing my dad doing early raids, tower drops, and castle drops, it blew my mind...one particular map had the enemy surrounded by walls of bombard tower, similar to this one, with some space in between for trebs to shot down enemy trebs, light cav on front and bombard cannon behind. All of this are things that he thought himself...we don't have any internet or the likes back then, only got 56kbit modem that was rarely used. Man, if only he was born one generation later...but in hindsight, I might not have been born, so I'm happy it works this way, haha.
I haven't played AoE II in a long time and never have tried ranked but.. I love the enthusiasm and love you show for AoE. I've started watching all of your videos about a month ago and can't stop. Keep it up!!
This is what it looks like when I play Portuguese on Arena. Had one game against hardest AI that lasted 6 hours with hundreds of Bombard Towers built. The game ended when the AI had chopped all the trees on its side of the map. At that point it was just tasking villagers to run into tower fire until it resigned.
"I've never seen this before." I've had to deal with layers on layers of bombard walls in games with my friends before. I couldn't rush them because they always outvoted me on having a treaty, but it takes so long to grind down even with an insane amount of siege.
RE Mibble's comment about it being "very suspicious" when MacLuffy pushed out as he was putting up towers, hopefully on reflection (if he watches the game back) he sees that MacLuffy hadn't started making Siege Workshops until he saw the Bombard Towers so either he's hiding stream sniping well, or more likely, he wasn't stream sniping but instead it was just fortuitous timing to push out.

I once had a game with 7 AI as kid, with a treaty so nobody attacked anyone. I built bombard towers in everybody's base and all over the map. When the treaty ended, I won within like 10 seconds lol
I feel like he could have used trebs or his own bombards in the mix, as it would force his bombards to come forward but be in range of his cavalry, and his cavalry to be in range of the cannoneers

I'm a casual viewer, don't really play AOE2 that much but, but play and watch other strategy games. I love the detailed commentary on strategies, and searching for interesting games and casting them is the most interesting content you can give me. Especially commentary on *why* you do certain things, maybe just referencing things that I can look up. I think you skip over some basic stuff that could be interesting to a casual viewer. How much food do you get from the boar? What time do we expect the castle age in a fast castle build? Maybe put up the civ bonuses at the start of the video for those that don't know them all. I know you've probably repeated this stuff like 10,000 times already, but if someone gets recommended a video of yours they might jump in anywhere, and they're not going to be able to find the games that you went over it. So I think a bit more repetition than you are used to in day to day life can be a good thing in this sort of cast. Anyway, keep up the good work man! I think you have improved your casting a lot since I last watched your channel back in 20...18?
One of the reasons I watch your videos is because unlike many others in the gaming sphere you are not afraid to show empathy and your own emotions. The clickbait titles and titlecards also helped to give you a chance in the first place of course.
Liking the plan for the next videos. However, since we have some team games coming up I am missing any guide for what to look out for (team compositions, maps, various common strategies and timings). It will be full on action from the start and I do not know if most people who joined with DE and follow your channel can enjoy it without some kind of help beforehand.
Could a strategy for macluffy have been to get an onager or treb and chop through the trees on the left side? I know that would come with the risk of a raid to the back of his base.

I was wondering if in a game like this where there's not a lot of action or it's a mirror match between empires, if you could go over the tech tree for that/those civs. For someone like me who knows the basics but doesn't have techs memorized that'd be wonderful!

@@QbiKz The big problem with bombard towers is that the one unit that they can reliably hit, they don't actually do any damage to. Sure they have bigly numbers attack wise on paper but in most situations, barely any of those slow cannon balls are going to hit. Of course, like with any defensive structure, if you let your opponent build a literal map spanning wall out of them, it's no longer an argument for balance, rather, a skill difference between the players as this should never be allowed to happen in the first place and what are trebs.
Bombard Towers +5 bonus damage to Ram armor class. Then Bombard Towers would deal the same DPS to Siege Rams as any unupgraded Feudal age Watch towers (they currently deal less DPS to Rams than arrow towers).
Me building bombard towers: "OMG bombard towers are the strongest thing i can build and they barely hurt rams. I'm screwed" T90: "those bombard towers only do 1 damage against rams so he needs some other units"
I was worried MacLuffy would run past the wall (cut a few trees left; or a bombard or treb for a hole one either side) especially in the begin. The weakness of a tower is that it can be in completely the wrong place --- these are perfect on the condition that McL kindly feeds his stuff to it; but they don't protect anything of MbL nor pressure McL's base. Also, why not spend similar cost on 4x bombard, then 1x castle, then repeat 3x, then another 4x bombard (16bombard, 3castle = 1600g + 2000st + 1950st = 5500res --- much cheaper, though a bit shorter because 16 towers is four tiles longer than 3castles). Also advantage you can safely reinforce by filling castles then flooding units ----- drawback the castle may trigger trebbing which these towers don't seem to provoke?
at 20:20 the problem with AoE2 meta is that unless it's executed perfectly other strategies might perform better... that's why I loved the wall-less game, it brought back the rock paper scissor of army composition. PS.: that might be a good video idea. like a look into the tech tree to show what's good against what plus theory vs reality

Did that with my older brothers. Bombard tower walls became my signature move when I was little. This video feels previous to me for so many reasons

When I was a kid, I was making BBT trains in BF 2v2v2v2 AoC after the hardest AI loses steam. Games would be 6 hours but I would easy win.
After watching every match in Hidden Cup 3 and the qualifiers, I am jonesing for more tournaments!
I'm a casual viewer, don't really play AOE2 that much but, but play and watch other strategy games. I love the detailed commentary on strategies, and searching for interesting games and casting them is the most interesting content you can give me. Especially commentary on *why* you do certain things, maybe just referencing things that I can look up. I think you skip over some basic stuff that could be interesting to a casual viewer. How much food do you get from the boar? What time do we expect the castle age in a fast castle build? Maybe put up the civ bonuses at the start of the video for those that don't know them all. I know you've probably repeated this stuff like 10,000 times already, but if someone gets recommended a video of yours they might jump in anywhere, and they're not going to be able to find the games that you went over it. So I think a bit more repetition than you are used to in day to day life can be a good thing in this sort of cast.
Anyway, keep up the good work man! I think you have improved your casting a lot since I last watched your channel back in 20...18?

One of the reasons I watch your videos is because unlike many others in the gaming sphere you are not afraid to show empathy and your own emotions. The clickbait titles and titlecards also helped to give you a chance in the first place of course.

Liking the plan for the next videos. However, since we have some team games coming up I am missing any guide for what to look out for (team compositions, maps, various common strategies and timings). It will be full on action from the start and I do not know if most people who joined with DE and follow your channel can enjoy it without some kind of help beforehand.

Could a strategy for macluffy have been to get an onager or treb and chop through the trees on the left side? I know that would come with the risk of a raid to the back of his base.

Hey T90, love your casts and personality in the AOE2 community! I was wondering if in a game like this where there's not a lot of action or it's a mirror match between empires, if you could go over the tech tree for that/those civs. For someone like me who knows the basics but doesn't have techs memorized that'd be wonderful!

The fact that cannon towers don't do anything to rams anymore is silly though and really makes them not worth it 99% of the time.
They need a balance to be fair. They wreck almost everything else
@@QbiKz The big problem with bombard towers is that the one unit that they can reliably hit, they don't actually do any damage to. Sure they have bigly numbers attack wise on paper but in most situations, barely any of those slow cannon balls are going to hit.
Of course, like with any defensive structure, if you let your opponent build a literal map spanning wall out of them, it's no longer an argument for balance, rather, a skill difference between the players as this should never be allowed to happen in the first place and what are trebs.
Bombard Towers +5 bonus damage to Ram armor class. Then Bombard Towers would deal the same DPS to Siege Rams as any unupgraded Feudal age Watch towers (they currently deal less DPS to Rams than arrow towers).
Around 40 or 30 damage would be fair.
@@l33tpie only True if you leave bbt alone. If you have your units fighting enemy uniths under bbt they would hit and kill all.
Me building bombard towers: "OMG bombard towers are the strongest thing i can build and they barely hurt rams. I'm screwed"

I was worried MacLuffy would run past the wall (cut a few trees left; or a bombard or treb for a hole one either side) especially in the begin. The weakness of a tower is that it can be in completely the wrong place --- these are perfect on the condition that McL kindly feeds his stuff to it; but they don't protect anything of MbL nor pressure McL's base. Also, why not spend similar cost on 4x bombard, then 1x castle, then repeat 3x, then another 4x bombard (16bombard, 3castle = 1600g + 2000st + 1950st = 5500res --- much cheaper, though a bit shorter because 16 towers is four tiles longer than 3castles). Also advantage you can safely reinforce by filling castles then flooding units ----- drawback the castle may trigger trebbing which these towers don't seem to provoke?

at 20:20 the problem with AoE2 meta is that unless it's executed perfectly other strategies might perform better... that's why I loved the wall-less game, it brought back the rock paper scissor of army composition.
PS.: that might be a good video idea. like a look into the tech tree to show what's good against what plus theory vs reality
Super fun to do but not really an option in pvp most times. Still loved doing this in normal campaign mode or against easy/normal comp.
