I moved to Pattaya recently from Canada. I came with my International Driving Permit and say this is a must if you can get it before coming. Certificate of Residence took 3 hours at immigration in Jomtien and was processed on the same day for a cost of 300 baht. You may need an original for both motorcycle and car licenses plus to buy a bike or 900 baht total. With the international driving permit, the cost for the car is 205 baht and motorcycle was 105 baht. 310 baht total for 2 years. No course or training required yet if you come to Thailand with no experience on 2 wheels, I would say training is a must as I had 21 years of riding many bikes in my life. I went through multiple trainings in Canada and saved my ass numerous times thus far. Be safe to all.
Great informative video as usual. Nice one Wayne. Will you be doing a video about the insurance ? Always seems confusing when mentioned on other peoples videos. Hope you will explain it mate. 🙏👍. Stay safe
Thanks mate. My rental bike came with tax and basic insurance for me, so i never had to do it. But i would like a better insurance package, so maybe i could do a vlog on that when i do it. Tax is super easy mate, 150 baht at the transport office and insurance are super cheap too, around 2000 a year. It's a vlog i will look at doing at some point mate. Thanks
Thanks Wayne this is perfect. I'm not sure I wanna use the roads that much when I'm there but to be able to cruise around the islands on quite roads and have the confidence to do that is what I'm looking for. Plus, as you say, it's nice to have the option to just jump on your bike and go somewhere.
For sure mate, it will be a lot easier on the islands. City life can get a bit crazy. I'm enjoying it though. Yes, it's always good to have that license, wish i done it right away. Thanks buddy.

The RUclips channel, Spain on a Fork, has the same intro music--or used to as it recently changed. It suits your channel better, though. Useful information, thanks!
Nice one! that music is free from RUclips, so lot's of people use it. I have been thinking about doing a new intro. I will have a look at the "Spain on a Fork" channel. Thanks.
Great job with this vlog Wayne. Some very useful information for new chums wanting a license in Thailand. Luckily i didn't have to do this 2 days training 3 years ago. Been riding big bikes for over 40 years in Australia. Excellent advice regarding legal matters like wearing a helmet etc...Save yourself lot's of dosh lads in police fines, might even save your life!
Thanks Lars, i tried to explain the best i could how it was for me. Yep, best to be all legal, then it's something less to worry about in Thailand. Thanks buddy 👌
Hi Wayne, If you have your Uk motorcycle license and an international drivers permit you just need to visit Ching Mai DVLA on the Hang Dog road, with your medical from the doctor, residency and passport with your visa in. Watch the video for 2.5 hours then take the computer test. You'll need to get a separate Thai drivers license for driving a car.I went there but at the time I did not have my residency I will moving out this year sometime on a retirement visa. As always keep vlogging !!
Hi Mate, yes that's correct, if you get an international license before coming, it's a lot easier. Good luck on coming back over buddy. Thanks for the support 👍
Wayne, i am so happy to hear your got your licence now, i am sure you will steal ride Black Beauty from time to time, but now you can really explore the area, have you though of doing the Mae Hong Son loop
Thanks Leila. I will still ride Black Beauty, in fact i was riding her today 😊. I'm not sure about Mae Hong Son, i would like a bigger bike for that but i'm not rulling it out. I'll be staying up around the north though, i won't be going on any crazy adventures. I have a few places in mind, but i will save that for future vlogs. Thanks Leila.
Hey Wayne. Good for you Mate. I would never be illegal as a forigner to risky. Very reasonable. I ve been riding for years in the states so i still need the thai license i believe. Cheers
Thanks Robert. Yes, it's always a risk riding without a license. It's worth doing the 2 days and paying the 1000. Get a international license before you come and you'll be sorted mate 👍
Got the International License Car and Motorcycle at AAA before leaving the states. Believe it’s valid one year. Not sure if you can renew while out of the states.
Wayne....You might check Precision Striking, 10,000 punches. Just boxing. But great workout. I did 6,000 without the bag. 4,000, at another time, with bag.
This is helpful. I hate jumping through hoops, but understand why they want that cooperation. As far as those 45 questions, I wonder if there is an English language edition of those 50 questions I could read up on beforehand, { like on a flight over } .........Knowing this helps one develop a landing plan. With Ebikes coming down the pike at an elaborate rate now, an Ebike might be the answer, but they do not have as much road side in Thailand as we do were I live I noticed, so maybe not. I wonder if they would just transfer a "motorcycle license" I already have from the state I live in the USA? Had to jump through hoops to get that already. A civilized state requires educational models, especially regarding safety.
I'm sure you could find some practice questions online for the test. If you have License from your country, you can get the international license before you come 👍
@@WalkAboutWayne That is amazing. I really thank you. Would they just accept a regular license to ride a bike in Thailand, or would it have to be an international motorcycle license?
Thanks for the vlog… Thinking about going the “legal” route, when I come back and was wondering what that may entail. Sounds straight forward… I was thinking I could just get a lease for a couple months while in Bangkok and get my med certificate and residency…. And another thing to mention is, that not only is it illegal to ride/drive in Thailand without a Thai license, travel insurance will NOT cover you if you are involved in an accident and aren’t licensed, or falling the rules. So technically, I suppose that means, even if you are just a passenger (think motorbike taxi) and involved you in an accident, you will also not be covered if not wearing a helmet.
Always best to be all legal i think. Sure, insurance won't be worth the paper it's written on without a licence. I think you're correct with the passenger also, especially if not wearing a helmet.
Thanks David. The Practise test are a mix of 80 question and 50 of these will be used in the test. They mix them up everytime, so you don't know what 50 you will get. But if you learn the the 80, you will be fine. Hope that makes sense. Thanks.
Hey Wayne, that was an excellent vlog. I have one question if you can answer it. Does the motorcycle licence cover all sizes of bikes? For example a 600cc bike? If you know then that would be great. Cheers Wayne. Thanks 👍😊
Very concise and to the point video, thank you. Can you please talk a bit more about the residency certificate? This TM30 is a little confusing to me. I am tourist. How do I get the TM30 from the hotel/ hostel?
Nice one Wayne, congrats man. Interesting about the fingerprint check to confirm identity - I know for decades people have told stories about having others go for them. Take care buddy 🙏😎👍🏻
Good informative vlog Mate, and great to know you're all legal. You can end up in a pickle if you're unlicensed and uninsured and someone is hurt. There are some decent Go-pro motocycle cam mounts so you can ride and film safely 👍
Thanks Don. Yep, it's a nice feeling knowing i'm all legal. It just takes a little less stress off myself. Things can still go wrong but that's the case in any walk of life. I'm trying to find the best position for the cam on the bike mate, i got all the mounts but not sure which one to use yet. Thanks buddy.
So your test is on a scooter and that will cover you for a bigger bike also? I know what you mean about the theory questions not making sense... It's exactly the same for a car license! Been driving locally on a moped for a couple of years but now just bought a 250cc so it's time to sort the license out!
If I have an international car license, can I validate it and obtain a Thai one, and then with the Thai car license obtain a motorcycle license more easily? Thanks
Are there any electric scooters to buy there? Just for local rides up and down the road to the shops, not going across country or on big roads. If so, do these need licences? Might be a good way for people to get used to being on the roads.
Yes, you can get an electric bike here, many people ride them around the city. I'm not 100% certain about the licence, but i'm sure it's classes as a bicycle and no license is needed.
Thanks Wayne good info on getting your Thai license. When you get your licence how long does it last? In our country our licence is renewed every 10 years (don't need to re-sit just new photo and new renewal date)
Well done on getting your license Wayne. Is it something similar to be able to drive a car over there ? .fancy doing touring about next time I'm over there.
Well even though I won’t be getting my licence for a few years, I found that very interesting, I love the way you are the farang watching Thai Accident TV for 2 hours 🤣. I have heard before that getting a licence is something like this. I watched another youtube video and it seemed impossible to fail. What are your thoughts? Do you think it would be possible to fail and do you know if someone could fail and then would they pay again and come back for another two days?
Hi Rebecca, watching the videos was the hardest part as it was all in Thai and just watching accidents mainly. I guess it's meant to hit home about the dangerous roads (it did with me). I can't really comment on the question you asked Rebecca, for obvious reasons. I passed legit, so i don't really know what would happen if you failed. 😉
Did they bring in the big bike license (400cc+)? I have a UK car driving license issued before 2001 which means I can automatically ride 50cc bikes (CBT license). I also have a 1 year international license. If I get that transferred to a Thai license is that gonna cover me to ride big bikes as well? I read that they announced they were gonna implement the bike big license a few years back but nothing came of it. Just wondering if Im missing something, and if my current license is enough for all motorbikes? Cheers.
1 bike license cover covers all still in Thailand. They only have one for all bikes. Along as you got the Thai license or international, you will be fine.
Very interesting and helpful vid Wayne. A couple of questions for you...in the course did they supply the bikes or use your own? Scooter or more traditional bike? Also..are you now able to get an international license with motorcycle checked? Thanks again for the info.
Hi Robert, yes all bikes are provided or you can bring your own. You get the choice or manual or automatic also. Most of the bikes are Scooters. I'm not sure if you can get a international license with a Thai license ( if that's what you mean ) I'm 99% sure it's only valid in Thailand. Thanks.
thanks for your great video mate, I am planning to come to Thailand for a short trip. do you know if I can rent a bike without a driver's license? I was worried about the police, for example they stop me and fine me or something else... does that happen a lot there?
Thanks! Police are about more and more now buddy. If you get stopped you will get a small fine. Let's just say, rentals are very very relaxed with the license situation.
That's a good question Rob, i forgot to add that. Yes, i had to do a eye and coordination test. Look at the colors on the board and do a reaction test with a foot pedal.
When I get to Chiangmai, I am planning to rent a bicycle to get around. I will definitely try and get a motorcycle licence. However, do you think it is safe to ride a bicycle on the roads?
I rode a bicycle here for 2 years. The city was quiet her then but I always felt safe. It’s a lot more busy here now but if you keep switched on at all times, it will be fine riding a Bicycle. All depends on the area you stay also.
I intended to say that my country only permits me to ride motorcycles up to 125cc, is it possible to ride in Thailand even on a 500cc just with the international license?@@WalkAboutWayne
A good helmet is a good advice indeed. Most people are wearing these plastic 400 bht useless things on their head. Loved the midget driving course tho! Thanx for sharing mate!
Mines not great, it's the helmet i got with the bike. I must get a decent one at some point. Loads of fakes here, as you well know mate. The course was like a go-kart track mate haha. Hope all is well buddy.
Where did they grab you to make you cough Wayne?🤣 Great incite into getting a licence. I am sure the adventures start now. Stay safe mate. Have you got the ink off yet🤣
Hi! Love your content! Do you have to renew your license every 5 year at DLT office or do they treat your license like a local now? And in that case, do you need a medical checkup every 5 year?
@@WalkAboutWayne sounds good man! I’m happy for you! Me and my wife are going to move to Thailand in a near future , but I’m just going to convert my Swedish licens (both car and bike) to a Thai-license at TDLS in Bangkok. First a 2year and after that a 5year license. It should cost 3500THB. Anyways, take care and continue to pump out good content! 🙏☺️
Not sure if it is true....can you also get your International Driving Permit in the US at AAA prior to traveling overseas....I do have a motorcycle designation on my US drivers license.
just curiosity, if i came back and wanted to use a bigger style of bike would that require a different license? i have just been a few of the comments in your blog , you are covering a very broad area, well done, this may sound weird but i am not sure i could handle one of these little tiddlers in the city , i recon i would be freaking out all the time..............
The tiddlers are better for the city Stuart, but if your going out of the city more often, a bigger bike is better for sure. The license covers all motorcycles mate. Thanks buddy.
If I have a motorcycle endorsement on my California license and show up with an international license, does it just transfer over or do I need to do the class and all?

Is a driving license made in Thailand also valid in Europe? If I show that I made my driving license in Thailand, it should be recognized in Europe... Am I wrong?
Hello Wayne, I spoke to you once before about a volunteer visa. Can you tell me how to get that type of visa? For example, who to contact here in Chiang Mai and the cost of the visa? Thanks and have a good one. Randall
Hi Randy, hit me up on my Instagram or Facebook and i will send you a link to someone i recommend. Visa can cost anywhere from 25,000 to 50,000 Baht mate. Thanks.
Hi Wayne, I have 2 questions: 1. Can I get residence certificate using TM30 from hotel, visa agent that can help with residence certificate even if I am staying at hotel? 2. Did you have to make advance appointment & wait 2-3 months for the actual 2 day course? Thanks
Hi mate. 1. Yes a residence certificate should be fine from a hotel . I live in a part hotel also. 2. No, i did the course the next day :) Good luck buddy. 👍
@@WalkAboutWayne Hi Wayne, So, you mentioned you received your license the next day, what was the exact process like? 1. Queue up early in the morning before the transport office open Or, get photo taken first before queuing up? 2. Did they have a separate queue for foreigners or was there a mad rush for queue numbers between locals and foreigners? 3. Did you make an appointment beforehand before going to the office, is there an app to make appointment or go through a visa agent to expedite things abit? I heard some people were told to come back in 2 days time to get the license. Thanks Wayne
If you already have a motorcycle license in the USA, and are an experienced rider, do I need to take a course to get a motorcycle license in Thailand???
Hi Wayne, I hope you see this. I'm trying to get residence certificate. There's so many conflicting reports on whether I can get it as a tourist or not. I'm in Hua Hin at the moment and am 2 weeks into a 4 week lease. Apparently my appartment won't do a TM30 form! Nor can I get proof of address, something you also apparently need, other than proof of my agoda booking. Does that mean I have to check in somewhere else to get my t30 form and proof of address or will proof of my agoda booking alone be enough? Hope that makes sense. I'm in Thailand for at least 6 months so got plenty of time.
I think by law they have to do a TM30 for you mate but I did hear that TM30s was stopping also. I don't really know mate, because it's been so long since I done mine. If your hotel won't do it, go to immigration and see what they say. Or, hire a visa agent to do it all for you, that's what I done. 👍

I had a question. My 2023 Hayabusa is currently back in Japan. I want to import it into Thailand what's all involved? PS I am asking because I went looking at the 2023 Hayabusa in Bangkok and I kept walking out laughing my ass off at the prices they wanted. My Busa in Japan was $18,000. Hi Rusty, you are nearly bang on with the age mate. I'm early 40''s. Thanks so much for watching the vlogs. Hope the family is well 🙏
Great video. Very useful. I hope your driving centre videos were the ones I watched - There was a great clip of a guy leering and beeping his horn for a beautiful woman at the lights 😆
Thanks mate 👌 I think i do remember that video or one similar. 🤣
👌👌
Well done Wayne. A simple how to do it video. Should give some comfort for the anxious.
Thanks Edward, i tried to explain the best i could. I hope it can put some people as ease.
Great stuff mate.
Cheers David 👌
Great vlog
Are the questions on the practice tests ,the same on the final test
Thanks David. The Practise test are a mix of 80 question and 50 of these will be used in the test. They mix them up everytime, so you don't know what 50 you will get. But if you learn the the 80, you will be fine. Hope that makes sense. Thanks.
@@WalkAboutWayne
Thanks mate
Hey Wayne, that was an excellent vlog. I have one question if you can answer it. Does the motorcycle licence cover all sizes of bikes? For example a 600cc bike? If you know then that would be great. Cheers Wayne. Thanks 👍😊
Hi Kashif, thanks mate. Yes the license covers all motorbikes buddy 👌
@@WalkAboutWayne Excellent. Thank you so much. See you at the next vlog. Cheers man. 👍😊
Very concise and to the point video, thank you. Can you please talk a bit more about the residency certificate? This TM30 is a little confusing to me. I am tourist. How do I get the TM30 from the hotel/ hostel?
Thank you. You're hotel/hostel should have already registered you for a TM30. Check with the owner and see. If they haven't, ask them to do it.
Nice one Wayne, congrats man. Interesting about the fingerprint check to confirm identity - I know for decades people have told stories about having others go for them. Take care buddy 🙏😎👍🏻
Cheers Simo, yes mate they make sure you at least are attending the course, it's fingerprints all through the day for both days. Thanks buddy. 👍
Great spirit Wayne ❤
Cheers buddy.
just wondering : do you need to read of the eye chart during the exam or the medical checkup ?
Yes, I think I did to a very quick eye chart exam. I did a reaction test also.
So your test is on a scooter and that will cover you for a bigger bike also?
I know what you mean about the theory questions not making sense... It's exactly the same for a car license!
Been driving locally on a moped for a couple of years but now just bought a 250cc so it's time to sort the license out!
Yes, the license covers all size bikes 👍
If I have an international car license, can I validate it and obtain a Thai one, and then with the Thai car license obtain a motorcycle license more easily? Thanks
Yes, it will be a easier process if you already have a license from your country. You won't need to do the test.
Cheers for the info Wayne 👍
Thanks James 👍
Are there any electric scooters to buy there? Just for local rides up and down the road to the shops, not going across country or on big roads. If so, do these need licences?
Might be a good way for people to get used to being on the roads.
Yes, you can get an electric bike here, many people ride them around the city. I'm not 100% certain about the licence, but i'm sure it's classes as a bicycle and no license is needed.
Thanks Wayne good info on getting your Thai license. When you get your licence how long does it last?
In our country our licence is renewed every 10 years (don't need to re-sit just new photo and new renewal date)
First one is for 2 years. Then you have to go get the 5 year one . Thanks 👍
Well done on getting your license Wayne. Is it something similar to be able to drive a car over there ? .fancy doing touring about next time I'm over there.
Thanks! Yes the car license is done on the same course. It takes 2 days also. They take you out on the roads as well for the car course.
Hi mate do you know how it is with a international license
If you come with a international license, I'm 99% sure, you don't have to do any training.
@@WalkAboutWayne that’s hilarious. My 50cc CBT license (as shown on my international license) covers super-bikes.
It might need to be at least 125cc I would check before. I'm not sure about the 50cc bike license.
Yeah I checked and on my international license it literally has just one stamp for motorbikes. So I guess Im good. Insane. @@WalkAboutWayne
congrats!
Cheers Alan 👌. No coffee mate? 🤣
It just didn't seem appropriate great video
Hi, when doing the test, do you need to bring your bike for test?or they will provide it?
No, you don’t need a bike. I didn’t have one and they let me use a bike.
@@WalkAboutWayne seems like getting a bike license in Thailand is much more easier then other country, thanks for the video, really useful
Wayne, did you have to take an eye test? I ask because I might have to update my prescription (glasses) in order to pass...
That's a good question Rob, i forgot to add that. Yes, i had to do a eye and coordination test. Look at the colors on the board and do a reaction test with a foot pedal.
@@WalkAboutWayne Was the eye test done during the medical exam or at the school? Also, is there any type of depth perception test?
When I get to Chiangmai, I am planning to rent a bicycle to get around. I will definitely try and get a motorcycle licence. However, do you think it is safe to ride a bicycle on the roads?
I rode a bicycle here for 2 years. The city was quiet her then but I always felt safe. It’s a lot more busy here now but if you keep switched on at all times, it will be fine riding a Bicycle. All depends on the area you stay also.
if i have international driving license i can ride on any bikes in thailand ? even if i had A2 license in my country?
Yes, an international can ride any bike in Thailand . I'm not sure what an A2 is though.
🤣🤣🤣 Thanks mate! Starting off slow, surrounding areas.
Hi! Love your content! Do you have to renew your license every 5 year at DLT office or do they treat your license like a local now? And in that case, do you need a medical checkup every 5 year?
Thank you for liking the videos! I have to apply for a new license every 2 years. I don't need to do the test again though, just watch a video.
Nice one Wayne, now, on yer bike mate! 😂 take it easy man
Cheers Lee! On me bike mate, loving it 👌 Take it easy man.
Not sure if it is true....can you also get your International Driving Permit in the US at AAA prior to traveling overseas....I do have a motorcycle designation on my US drivers license.
Yes, I do believe you can do it before you leave. That would be best 👍
Thank you again
just curiosity, if i came back and wanted to use a bigger style of bike would that require a different license?
i have just been a few of the comments in your blog , you are covering a very broad area, well done,
this may sound weird but i am not sure i could handle one of these little tiddlers in the city , i recon i would be freaking out all the time..............
The tiddlers are better for the city Stuart, but if your going out of the city more often, a bigger bike is better for sure. The license covers all motorcycles mate. Thanks buddy.
Can you do this course without a visa as a tourist?
Yes, you can do this on a tourist visa.
If I have a motorcycle endorsement on my California license and show up with an international license, does it just transfer over or do I need to do the class and all?
Hi Brian, I'm sure you don't need any test with the international licence. You can just get a bike right away. I'm 99% sure. Thanks.

Is a driving license made in Thailand also valid in Europe? If I show that I made my driving license in Thailand, it should be recognized in Europe... Am I wrong?
No, I don't think a Thai license is valid in Europe. Some other SE Asian counties will accept it, but not Europe.
Thanks.
Hi Wayne,
I have 2 questions:
2. No, i did the course the next day :)
Good luck buddy. 👍
@@WalkAboutWayne Hi Wayne,
So, you mentioned you received your license the next day, what was the exact process like?
1. Queue up early in the morning before the transport office open
Or, get photo taken first before queuing up?
2. Did they have a separate queue for foreigners or was there a mad rush for queue numbers between locals and foreigners?
3. Did you make an appointment beforehand before going to the office,
is there an app to make appointment or go through a visa agent to expedite things abit? I heard some people were told to come back in 2 days time to get the license.
Thanks Wayne
how r u?~Walk-Abuot~ you shared fantastic . catch you later,;)
I'm good dude, hope your well. 👌
How long does the license last as a foreigner?
Hi Jes, you get a 2 year one first and after that you get one for 5 years.
Is a yellow book prove of residence
I think that should be ok Martin, but every place is different.
If you already have a motorcycle license in the USA, and are an experienced rider, do I need to take a course to get a motorcycle license in Thailand???
Just bring a international license with you and that will be ok.
@@WalkAboutWayne Got it. All ready then. Thanks!
Can you get a license on a tourist visa?
Yes 👍
@@WalkAboutWayne Nice one cheers. I think I'll wait til I'm in Chiang Mai and sort it out there 👍
@@TheColossalBlanket hey! were you able to get one in the end as a tourist? cheers!
@@GG-jr9xl I think it's possible but it's an enormous pain in the arse so I didn't bother in the end. I'm still out here for a while though but I think I might try my luck in Malaysia. English is spoken better there and I just get the feeling the lessons will be more competent. Licenses are valid for all countries in the ASEAN. If I get one I'll report back here to let you know how it went.
I had a question.
My 2023 Hayabusa is currently back in Japan.
I want to import it into Thailand what's all involved?
PS
I am asking because I went looking at the 2023 Hayabusa in Bangkok and I kept walking out laughing my ass off at the prices they wanted.
My Busa in Japan was $18,000. These Thai half-wit's wanted $50,000 US. It's a Suzuki! So I was just wondering if you knew what would be involved in this adventure.
Cheers.
James Ray Bond.
I like your video. But this is my first video and my first time here.
I'm not the best to ask about importing buddy. I'm sure it's very possible but probably pricey too. Thanks for liking the videos, hope you can get the bike into Thailand.
Hi mate, any info you can give us on tax and insurance?
Tax is easy mate, i think it's around 200 Baht a year from the transport office. Insurance is easy too, around 2000 a year. My rental bike is taxed and insured for me, so i never had to do it. Maybe i could do a vlog on it at some point though. Thanks.
I got told you need to get paperwork from the British embassy as well
No, you don't need that buddy.
Did you need to show your other license to get this?
No
@@WalkAboutWayne Thats good, see you soon!
In Sweden it takes about 2-3 months of instense training to pass the license. I know people failing the exam for years... lol .. I passed in 3 months. First try. :P
I wish they done that in Thailand, it would be a safer place on the roads. Well done on passing first time mate 👍
The fee for both my license MC and Car cost me 500 bath as I remember
Still very cheap for both. Thanks 👍
What’s the benefit of getting a Thai driver license over just having an international driver license?
Good question. Easier for insurance and for police road checks. It can also be used for other things.
The Thai drivers I’ve seen the only thing I would drive in Thailand is a car mate thanks for the information but for me it’s a car all the way
Car is defo a lot safer Brendan, bit of a nightmare in rush hour but safer. I'm taking it easy on the scooter for now. Cheers mate.
