- [Stereo feed] The celebrated author is interviewed, not in the television studio, but in the countryside, where he is free to blast away at various objects, including his just-released book, with all manner of weapons .... and all-the-while, whetting his whistle with a favorite libation, or two.

Shooting an M60 at copies of your own book is absolutely art. Rest in Firepower.
Predates Banksy shredding half way even!
Hunter seemed like he actually liked Conan quite a bit in this.
Yes especially after he told Hunter's assistant that he required an explosive for him LOL.
The Good Doctor loved anybody that was fun to be around, was a good shot, and wasn’t stupid. And any one of those traits would do just fine.
Conan can really hold his own and it is what makes him so funny. He rolls with the punches and is extremely smart and quick.
@@mrjustinesquer Totally agree.
Conan is a DeadHead
i never realized how good of a job depp did in fear and loathing lol, he really captured his mannerism well.
He got official HST approval because he spent a lot of time with him and understood he had to get it right. But the initial meeting sealed it for Hunter because they are both from St. Louis.
The way he smokes, the voice, and speech pattern!
Deep lived with hunter for a while before doing the movie

I love how Hunter screams when he can’t find his weed/cigarettes IMMEDIATELY.
The struggle is real
i thought it was his lighter
Yeah I laughed at that instantly too. But I reckon it's due to severe OCD, if you ever check his schedule there's listed when he takes cocaine, when he smokes a cigarette and so on.
definitely funny classic hunter

Two journalists from different eras shooting guns together. It sounds crazier than it is imo. We just don't see it. Imagine all the celebs that keeanu Reeves has shot guns with. They're just not part of the idiotic celeb crew. Conan is an exception I think. He walks among them but he sees through it all. Famous journalists have more exposure to different people and they get to run their own show. Movie stars are a different breed but keeanu is one of the few modest ones

My uncle gave me the Hell's Angels book back in the seventies.. that made me want to get Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.. both great books and it started me on a journey of reading.. I must have read a thousand books by now.
Thanks Hunter
He put me on to Nathanael West. Can recommend A Cool Million if you like very black humour.
Such a great writer. They say you should be able to feel the presence of a chef in everything in his restaurant. Hunter does this in his writing. Oozes himself through the page.
I started with Fear and Loathing and got sucked in quickly. I read I think nearly everything he wrote and published. May he rest as he likes.
Same here. I read Hells Angel's and then moved onto the Rum Diary but then found out about William S. Burroughs and got sucked into Ginsberg afterwards. I don't think my rational brain has been separated from my hedonist primitive nature since then and I'm not scared to admit it. 😎 if you ever wanna know who's in charge, it's the one you can't make fun of.
You should thank your Uncle
Hunter was a different breed, but I think what slips people minds, is that this man was truly brilliant, an amazing writer, and had a vision that was correct and truthful..

This was actually Thompson's eulogy for Oscar Zeta Acosta. I highly suggest reading Acosta's novels. Especially if you enjoyed Fear and Loathing in LV, Hells Angels, and the Rum Diary.

It's so nice to see HST in such a lighthearted context.
Before watching this, I never realized how on point Johnny Depp's unintelligeable outbursts were in Fear & Loathing.
No doubt...he spent a lot of time with Hunter studying his mannerisms before that movie was made, and they became good friends right to the end. RIP Hunter....

I just watched this again and cannot help but feel a pang of sadness mixed with reverence for both Conan and Hunter. It was very telling how much Hunter enjoyed the visit when he put his hand out first for Conan to shake.
Never gets old. Funny as can be! Hunter's humor doesn't get enough credit
I remember when this episode aired. Recorded it on my VCR. Great “interview”.nice to find this lost treasure.
John Wick ripped off the gun bartender bit
"Private Pyle I think we finally found something that you do well".
Besides Hunter just being Hunter, what made him truly extraordinary is the access he had to all kinds of high level people regardless of political affiliation. Everyone loved his intelligent irreverence and had no problem with him being around. Plus he was a maestro at using his press credentials. That and just out classing people with his bamboozling way of speech. Walked right past them, leaving them wondering what just happened? Ha ha! He’s the fucking BEST! HST!
plus he had a kick ass lawyer that came everywhere with him

Ever since his death, America's moral compass has gone all out of whack.
Are you talking about JFK?
@@julianfrederick9082 that question... uhh... went over my head.

Conan was the reason I liked early years of the Simpsons, great video!
We need more people like Hunter. Too many self entitled people walking around these days.
Self-entitled maybe, but at least they can write with proper grammar
Dude this man regularly abused those closest to him for his own selfish desires. Like he is a great great author but acting like Hunter S Thompson wasn't entitled in his own right is just plain incorrect

Greatest interview ever!! I remember watching this at the original airing and just laughing my ass off. Excellent!

Do you think he was there just for the show?
No, it’s his real job. A wooden liquor cabinet lives out there in the bush, stocked with bottles and massive guns. And he dresses like that every day. It was not staged at all!
Idc if it's staged. I want enough money to have a dude dressed in a tuxedo; set up guns and drugs for me.

Ever since Fear & Loathing the film, Johnny Depp hasn't been fully able to get out of his voice
My all time favorite Conan interview. I remember watching this back when it aired. I was in junior high school.
This video helps me appreciate just how on point johnny depps portrayal of thompson really was
My friend, the legendary comedy writer Greg Cohen, was responsible for this piece. I used to have his reel from Conan on VHS but sadly misplaced it. Such gems as "The Search For Grady", "The 2 Lionels", and "Chartering Freedom" (which was a recreation of the signing of the Declaration of Independence featuring Ron Jeremy and other porn stars) were on it. Incredible stuff.
Your friend was a funny guy. This was a great bit and idea.
@@olliefoxx7165 Yeah, he was just mid-20's when he was working for Conan. We went to school together and I just have to say that he worked in all the same stuff we used to laugh about back then, into his bits!! It was hilarious. He even had actors recreate an argument between a friend of ours and his mom..and used their names! Too good! There was a great Oldie Olson bit where he went back to high school. Just brilliant.
@@haysfordays Is he still writing?
@@olliefoxx7165 We lost touch. I assume he is. He went on to King Of The Hill for a while. Mad TV. Then that Demetrius guy from Comedy Central. The great thing is he wasn't a workaholic. He actually quit Conan on his own.

This has aged well.
Damn, this was wild. I know another photojournalist that traveled with him in the day. He even took care of Hunter's typewriter when he was in jail. He had so many crazy stories about those days, he could easily write his own book. Seeing Hunter " in the flesh" was a true treat, he was truly wilder than I thought. Nice to see him fully enjoying his old age.🌟
I watched this live... when of the best moments in the history of late night tv.
