Porsche 924 - The car that saved Porsche !

  • Misunderstood, often criticised and victim of many a 'that's not a REAL Porsche. The 924 has a fascinating back story and was the car to rescue Porsche during the challenging late 70s and 80s.
Originally a joint venture between Porsche and VW that fell victim to the oil crisis, the 924 was Porsche's first transaxle car and laid the foundations for the legendary 944. In this video I join my friend Duncan in his stunning example to learn more about this misunderstood classic.

The 924 saved Porsche. For us enthusiasts, it provided an excellent driving experience, it's balance, handling, aerodynamics, spirited acceleration, mpg etc. It wore tires evenly, was cheap to maintain. Without the 924, Porsche would have been sold. I have owned four and I will own another. Good video!

One of my mates was dropped off at school by his dad in a 924 Turbo back in the day. I was jealous as hell as my dad had a Renault 14 at the time!
Lovely car and a very knowledgeable owner, great video 👍

The cylinder head is all Porsche and the block has an incredible history. Started off as a Mercedes then Horch, Wanderer, Auto Union, AMC,Audi, VW.
    It's been EVERYWHERE.
The bottom end is almost indestructible

Ahh cylinder head ..audi..had a early one 76..had been imported by a chp in San Diego instead of the ribbed valve cover it had a cover with Audi on it and the Audi circles.

Hello Ped man, while im still at school {left in 84} my late father drove a nine twenty four, black with the sooooo cool black and white pasha {i think thats right?} trim. This as far as the insurance people where concerned ok to live outside on the drive, however next up was his 911 which had tobe away of a night. My bedroom was over the garage, believe me i can still hear the garage door open, the unique click of the door being popped open followed by the wine of a flat six fan.My Mum still lives in our family home all alone as my sister and i long gone,i go in the garage from time to time, theres evidence on the inner brickwork of where i hung Fizi bits to spray ! I owned a 968 sport in red back in the day for a while which the last take on transaxel before the Boxster came out.My fav has all ways been the Cerrera GT ,mr Bell still has his which was gifted to him for his efforts on the track, thank you.

i have owned a cheap 2nd hand 924 with the audi 2.0 liter engine. It was in 1992 or1993 and owning a Porsche (any Porsche) was giving the owner a god-like status.
Loved the way it shifted, the riding position with straight legs and how good it was in terms of reliability. it was the first car i owned that felt great driving and it took 30 years to have the same feeling again in another Porsche. Seems that Porsche cars have a feel of their own and i have owned lots of cars and never felt happy while driving them.... BTW great review, thank you!

Nice to see a great example of one of these. My mum had one, every morning we were four-up in the 924 going to school, even managed to squeeze two mountain bikes in the back with the seats folded down.... We sold it 15 years ago, 195k miles on it for less than £500, still going strong and looking great. They still have a 944 S2 which I'm sure you could drive for the channel, the only "downside" is that it is in the south of France.....

Another car that I wanted in the 1980's however I met a lovely women in 1980 fell in love, married in 1982 a bought a house and my dream of buying the 924 went. I had a Mk2 Ford Escort 1.3GL which I loved, I then bought, a Ford Capri 1.6 in red with a black by vinyl roof. I look back and think why didn't I keep them, My dream car was the 928 until I looked at the price. Great video and so far you have driven 2 cars I always wanted. My first car should have been the Alfasud but as a newly qualified driver in the late 1970's I could only drive a group 3 insurance and the Alfa was Group 4, hence the Ford Escort. I always did want the Ford Sierra Saphire Cosworth. Keep making these videos 👍

I loved this episode...why you say?? well in 1984 I was a Senior in High School and wanted to take my GF to the Prom. In the days leading up to Prom I had to listen to my friend who bragged about taking his uncles Corvette. At the time I didn't own a car and had to borrow my fathers Z24 which I thought was pretty cool but I agree it was no Corvette. When I went over to my fathers house to introduce my date he threw the keys of the 1977 1/2 Porsche 924 to me and said to switch cars!!! Porsche in those days to us kids was the best of the best. We all had posters of Porsche's on our walls in our bedrooms. I knew my father had one but would never ask or even dream that he would let me take it. I drove up to the Prom in the Porsche and my buddies almost we their pants. I love that car!!! Thank you for letting me relive that special time.

I had a 78 924 that was bright yellow. Picked it out in a parking lot taking off from the airport. It had brown leather interior. My cigarette lighter was broken and wanted it for my radar detector. Went to Porsche dealership and would be $65. The guy in parts told me to go to auto parts store and buy a VW one. I did for $12. Kind of miss that car. Loved the pop up headlights. Fun car to drive.

Good evening PP, not the best looking Porsche ever made but didn't realize it was a collaboration between Porsche and VW. It was good to hear about the story/history behind the car and not just the usual performance figures. Classics are always good to see, if you can get access to any others would be good viewing. Excellent review PP and was good to hear from the owner about issues he has had with it, and that its not all sunshine and roses 👍😊😊

I recently inherited my father-in-laws 1983 944 5-speed. It is mint. Underpowered by todays standards, but it is a thrill to drive, and I get many comments. The biggest issue was finding a Porsche repair shop that even wanted to touch it, as they only deal with 911 and new Porsches.

Hi that was a great video on this very nice 924. You say you don’t see them very much well watch or take part in any of the HERO events where you’re almost certain to see one. They are popular because they are good to drive have space to carry the equipment needed for historic rallies handle well with reasonable performance. At present they’re also inexpensive but the prices are beginning to go up but they’re certainly a great way to get a car with a good name to enter the classic car world. Well done and thank you to the owner.

Galvanised bodywork. Built to last. That was somewhat revolutionary in an era when mainstream cars (pile-em high, sell-em cheap) were plagued with rust. It is refreshing to see such a nice example, complimenting the delicacy of style and elegance so missing from current-day in-yer-face brutal and aggressive grills and everything else, big wheels, fussy detailing, bells and whistles - design that apparently people want these days.
The 944 (rather than 924) was dubbed “The thinking man’s Porsche” if I remember this correctly. Whether that was general, or just a tag applied by a motoring magazine at the time (either The Motor, or Autocar) I cannot remember.

I loved my 924 in red (or pink after the sun had got to it) with chequered seat inserts. No power steering is a challenge parking. Removable roof which sat in the original roof bag perfectly in the boot.
Handling was fun with near 50/50 weight with the rear mounted gearbox.
Brakes needed both feet when being driven with spirit.
Ended up with rotten sills unfortunately and sold on ebay to be stripped down to make a track car.

Hi, recently became a subscriber to your channel. Love the enthusiasm and delivery of your videos, but....you really didn't know that starting in 1976 it came before the 944? Anyway, another great video. Thanks to you and Duncan.

If I’m honest I didn’t know it started that far back. It looks way too modern for the 70s 😬

@@PetrolPed It certainly did and there was much dismay about it being front engined as opposed to a "proper" porche which should only have the oily noisey bit at the back. Being a teenager and newly qualified driver at the time, I would have loved to have driven one ( had a mini 850 at the time) but sadly never did.

That’s the same style of VW key I had with my Mk2 Golf. I can remember when you could buy a Porsche 924 for around £2,000 and there were loads to choose from back in the 90’s. Much rarer now and very few in the mint condition of this example.

Awesome looking car, well cared for and some fantastic original features. Unfortunately the key wasn't period correct. The original keys were similar rounded head (full black) but with the porsche logo! The glovebox key eas a small silver key with a large rounded head. (Very rare item)! My 1982 Lux retained hers! Always loved the the Porsche 924, although the statement “this car saved the company” now wearing a little thin. If so, then the 924, then the Boxster, and the Cayenne all have “saved the company”. Now given the timeline spans the late 1970’s, 1980’s, mid 1990’s and then mid 2000’s it sort of implies that Porsche is a badly run company 🧐. Let’s be straight it’s part of VAG irrespective of whom owns whose shares because of the strange relationship between the Piech and Porsche families. Mega profit comes from the Cayenne and big profits from the 911. As a died in the wool Porsche owner I don’t really care where the R&D and base engineering is done for wheel hubs, switch gear and electrics... it’s the Porsche “fairy dust” spread over its chassis and engines that create some of the best sports cars in the world 🤓

I had an \81 back in the USA in 2005. I LOVED Her, Problem was that she had a Show Quality Flame Job painted of her *REALLY WELL DONE( and I was in my mid 40's which for me was kind of out of sorts. I wanted to get a Vanity license plate for her but the closest I could get to what I wanted was ''MY PENS''. She also had a lower front air dam which really changed her profile. She was a Joy to drive and as fast as I needed her to be. I also had at that same time a 1979 Nissan 280zx.....and a soon to be Ex-Wife, need I say more?

I’ve owned 924’s since my early 20’s.... (I’m 58 now!) sold my last one, an 85 924 lux two years ago when I acquired a 987 Cayman. Although I still own a 1992 968 Porsche, so I still luv the trans-axle porkers.... That looked a tidy example, had the wrong rubber spoiler on it, and were you running on fumes?? As the low petrol light was on all through the video! Good to see one still being used as a daily, like my 968...214k miles and counting....

Petrol Ped ah yes!, the many little niggles of 924 ownership!, my first one (a1977 model) never would start once the engine was hot... a classic ‘feature’ of early Bosch Kjetronic fuel injection.

    • @GBOAF216
      @GBOAF216 3 года назад +1

Ermy Yes a flaw with the early 924, only really sorted it by the 83/84 model years, the earlier cars could all benefit from having a wire fitted to a switch, which would allow you to bypass the '5th' injector (cold start valve) and shoot neat fuel into the intake whilst trying to start a hot engine, worked a treat!. And avoided the embarrassing constant churning of a non starting engine......
