    I have a very good friend who lives there, we use to talk all the time online. But because of the power outs we barely talk anymore. The thing that scares me the most is how calm she is about it. She just said “ sorry I can’t talk to you often, or government is falling apart and there are power outages so I have to conserve power”. She said it in the most calm voice too like she had just excepted it. I hope everything gets better for her sake.

      The government is having a lot pf trouble of course but it isn't falling apart completely yet. They have appointed a cabinet recently and the party has agreed not to remove the pm. Even if you do not support the government, right now is not the time to change or have an election, the IMF does not have discussions unless there is political stability(i.e no elections going on) and it is time consuming + expensive

      I hope so too. Everybody suffers when politics are in shambles. It's such a waste of human energy, never mind devastating. Worrying about food, safety and shelter should be a thing of the past considering how much progress we've made producing goods and machines.
      Whid a thought the budget deficit would rise by cutting taxes and buying currency instead of food and medicine, or taxing those who can afford it rather than doing the opposite? Politicians understand economics about as well as Musk understands dancing lol

    You forgot the most important part. More than 70% of the problem in Sri Lanka is down to unprecedented amounts of corruption. So much public money was stolen by the ruling family that it would more than cover the country's entire foreign debt.

    • @hdhdhadn8356
      @hdhdhadn8356 2 года назад

      Let's assume they stole about 3billion dollars. And somehow you manage to get 2 billion dollars from selling the properties and comapnies they put their money on. You may able to recieve 2 billion dollars after couple of years. That's not enough money. Srilanka needs to reform its education system. Make it mandatory to have a qualification to become a politician by having a degree in either economics or political science. Then they need to promote it and innovative to the country so in the future srilanka can export some tech in terms of apps, software or hardware like Taiwan, South Korea, India and japan. The it need to be self sufficient in food and reduce import of rice, meat and promote private farming in those sectors. Moreover increase income tax, lowest being 10% for people who make at $4000 per anum and the highest being 25% $20000 pee anum. Then it needs to reduce spending on welfare by not making most of it free but definitely cheaper so there is more treasury fro money for infustructure building.

When covid hit, I got a message out of the blue from her longtime boyfriend who brought me the bad news that she had passed away. She had come down with something that here in the west is easily treatable, but because of the lockdown she was unable to get proper medical attention and medication, and because of that, died from something that should have been easily treated. Im a Sri Lankan, and as with every teenager here, we feel that our dreams and aspirations are basically gone, those who can have fled, and the remainder are protesting, prices have increased dramatically over the past few months and there is a shortage of fuel, food items and medicines including 4 essential ones. The biggest reason is mismanagement by Basil - who has no economic experience and according to some sources - worked in a gas station in LA (both brothers are from the u.s) and there was a surge of money printing to pay off for employee benefits, welfare etc , while keeping taxes artificially low and the exchange rate lower than the natural market demands, this allowed the bigger companies and individuals to buy dollars at a lower amount and launder it elsewhere, this caused a shortage of usd for payments and the government did a major blunder by cutting off fertilizer saying organic was better and it dropped crop yields including ceylon tea production , causing more issues. Next they restricted imports of electronics and other food items deemed unnecessary but that was too late, t There is a large migrant worker population who can send upto a billion per month (this is the second largest source of income for sri lanka , tourism is third so that took another few millions off the table as well, but by keeping the rupee artificially lower (exchange rate) to the black market (which sells close to 600) , people sent their cash through blackmarkets - denying the government cash, that with alleged laundering of 19 billion by the current government since 2019 has fueled anger against the government even more…as for me im on the edge, in a few months we may have no fuel at all, there is also a risk of losing access to the internet as the local ISPs are unable to pay for the services of the undersea cables and there is a massive hoarding of food …its almost like Lebanon, if you are planning to visit here, i strongly suggest you do research on it and plan according because s*it is about to hit the fan

By 2000, SL had become a hellish traffic-jam country rather than investing in electric trains. Wages earned from years of making beds and serving meals in hotels was immediately squandered on junky, filthy foreign autos and petrol. One really important factor is the OVERSEAS worker remittances to Sri Lanka which were the highest FX earner for the country, even ahead of tourism. The corona pandemic led to those remittances drying up as foreign workers in the Middle east lost their jobs and the fact that it has always been more lucrative to buy LKR on the black market. The Central bank floated the rupee in order to get people to remit rupees thru the banking system, but the flosting, which was recommended by analysts 2 years ago, came too late. The black market exchanges the rupee now for 390 to a Dollar.
    One more thing: the import reliance of Sri Lanka is also due to the poor development of industry, and that in turn due to the the massive taxes imposed on imported machinery and other Red tape in the country which effectively blocks all foreign investment. Investors are regularly asked for bribes by government officials in the order of about 10 million USD, e.g. to build a solar power plant, which would benefit the country or other eco friendly forms of Power Generation which would make the country more independent of fuel imports. But every fuel import goes in hand with bribes so solar energy is not acceptable. This has been the case for 30 years now, and politicians, when asked why they go into politics, state that they wish to earn money fast. That sums up the misery of the country...

What Sri Lanka needs is humanitarian aid, an end to the Rajapaksa family's grasp on the State, and for tourists to visit and spend money there.
    It's worth noting too that tourists and tourism are virtually completely unaffected by these troubles. They're still perfectly capable of having affordable (even more affordable given that dollars and pounds are worth twice what they used to thanks to rupee inflation- you can get a meal for two at a city-centre 5 star luxury hotel like the Hilton or Shangri-la for $20) and ridiculously beautiful, relaxing, and/or romantic holiday

      The debt trap isn't just measured in the amount of debt but rather what was given up. By creating a port and then handing it over to another country, Sri Lanka has effectively built an international trading hot spot that the other country is now profiting off of. So on top of any losses already made through costs and interest payments, Sri Lanka is loosing a large chunk of potential gains that port may have brought to it's economy.

    Governments taking on debt to finance all kinds of non-productive projects is a global problem, and it makes politicians look good on the short-term, as the borrowed money makes for a big party & GDP boost in the near-term. When the time to pay back the debt with interest comes due, it's on somebody else's watch.

    If you are looking into Sri Lanka and the governance of the state you must look into the civil war and how different world powers such as China and India have influenced this island nation. There are many things in the history of this nation that have led to this downfall. It will be worth doing an entire video on the history of Sri Lanka including the genocide of the Tamil people by the Rajapaksa Family.

    I like how the IMF imposes solutions on developing countries which developing countries for the most part don't use. Really???

    AHH Sri Lanka case is like Indonesian economic crisis in 1998, when President in that time is highly corrupt and funnelling influence and wealth in their family and close friend Which is mostly come from debt, so when Asia got financial crisis Indonesia got hits very badly
    So the people especially students do massive protest for month, many students got arrested and numbers also got kidnapped to this day's they still missing.
    Ultimately the government can't control the students and people so the president is stepping down
