@@Masaru_kun Even something as simple as having Daisy deal slightly more damage on physical attacks, a higher ground speed/jump height, and no float to reflect how most of her appearances are from the sports games, while Peach would have more damage with "magic‐element" attacks/turnips, higher air speed and retain float to keep more in line with the magical theming Peach and Zelda have had since Brawl.

Even worse was Peach/Daisy, because on release they had distinct mechanical differences between the characters, but like halfway through the first fighter's pack they removed the differences between them, and never did anything to make them different after. At least Dark Samus has some moves with different element properties and animation differences that can make interactions unique between the two.

Bringing a character in as a clone or echo can lock them into an unrepresentative representation. Ganondorf is the poster child for this. Instead of being brought into a later game with a design that was actually based on his source material, he was introduced as a Captain Falcon clone just because his 3D model was a good match for Falcon's. And once he was brought in as a Captain Falcon clone, that cemented his Smash identity. Characters tend to see only minor design tweaks between games, and Smash Ultimate Ganondorf (even with his newer sword moves) is still arguably more of a Captain Falcon clone than a source material Ganondorf. And we'll likely never see an true source accurate Ganondorf, unless the devs go the route of multiple Ganondorfs similar to how they have multiple Links and Zeldas.

@@orangeslash1667 Various Zelda games have given plenty of abilities for Ganondorf, which Smash Bros completely ignored.
Ocarina of Time: Ganondorf freely flies, or at least freely hovers. Phantom Ganon is armed with a trident, fires an electric orb, effectively teleports through paintings, and can create decoy images. Ganondorf has a strong diving punch with a wide area of effect, lobs a electric orb projectile and also charges up for a homing multi-shot projectile. Ganondorf has some form of "darkness" energy attack. You could argue that Ganondorf can naturally reflect projectiles by hitting them, or you could argue that is instead a property of his basic projectile (as Link can also reflect them.)
Wind Waker: Ganondorf can fight unarmed, but dual wields two long swords for the real fight. Instead of flight, he has a floaty jump that can deliver fast horizontal movement. Unarmed, he punches Link (and seems to have a martial arts stance at one point) and backhands Zelda hard enough to knock her out of the battle. Armed, he has a few wide sword swings, a spinning attack, and a flippy jump. He blocks front attacks with his swords.
Twilight Princess: As Zelda Puppet Ganondorf (Ganondorf possesses Zelda's body), he flies freely, uses her sword to launch/reflect his OoT electric projectile, and summons a triangular area of effect attack. As Dark Beast Ganon, he teleports while dashing forward with attempted goring attacks. As Ganondorf riding his horse, he uses a rather long sword one-handed and fires a circling orb that breaks into multiple projectiles. As Ganondorf on foot, he still has that long sword which he uses for a variety of attacks. He has a running slash, a thrust, a wide swing, a spin, and also does a rushing elbow into sword swing combo. He has both a quick evasive jump and a high vertical leap that he follows with a sword attack. He also tends to block front attacks with his sword.
Link to the Past: This is pig-monster Ganon instead of Ganondorf, but he has enough moves to warrant using him as an example. He fights with a trident that he can spin and throw like a boomerang. He can summon a ring of fireballs that circle around him. He can temporarily expand that fireball ring, and he can transform the fireballs into firebats that fly away. He can summon a firebat that flies in a spiral while setting fires on the ground. He can summon a firebat that flies in a straight line while leaving a fire trail. He has a jumping stomp that temporarily stuns. He has an afterimage dash/teleport. He can turn invisible.

I remember Sakurai using the term "Variations" in one of his videos to describe Fighters like Isabelle. It would make sense to have a Fox or Villager variant since characters in their respective series function near identically. But a variation of a Fighter doesn't constitute as an "Echo Fighter" because they would have to essentially re-create that existing Fighter to implement. So if creating a character like Wolf takes 70% of effort of a new character, it'd still be quicker to implement while offering actual gameplay differences.
The Echo Fighters in Ultimate are solely just to boost series representation for casual audiences as well as to address people who complained about clones in every prior Smash game, but they still have to justify the inclusion with some gameplay attribute (competitive or not). I still think Melee had a better approach to clones because they addressed either player criticism (i.e. make a faster Link) or the differences were gameplay-focused rather than boost the # of characters.
Now that Ultimate got casuals to like clone characters, I can see it being reasonable for clones to use existing movesets with tweaked properties that fit their canonical personalities in future games. Daisy being a faster, more aggressive Peach is a great example.
I also wish Sakurai clearly identified variations, since it does seem baffling that Dr. Mario isn't an Echo Fighter while Ken is.
Hope that adds to your points early in the video.

They don't even feel the same to play, like their mobility stats are out of wack with one another. @Eternal Indifference of course, I’d be referring to characters that would make sense to be echos being treated this way. With a bit of work, I fully believe that Dark Pit and Daisy could work as echo fighters because they make sense to mirror their counterparts (not Dark Samus because original Samus needs a full rework before either side could work).
But Lucina makes full sense to me to be a Marth echo fighter. In fact, I find it excessively weird that she wasn’t like that in the first place. I haven’t played the game myself yet (in the backlog) pretending to be Marth was a major part in her story, then playing like he did would lean into this more and, if it was the intent, could fool longtime fans better. The only good reason I could see Lucina needing to play differently than Marth is if the player is told that it is Lucina in disguise early on and they are deliberately trying to show the difference between the two.

I don't know if I'm crazy or not but I think there was a Super Smash Bros. game on the N64, and in it there was a clone character: Luigi, as well as two "similar to another" characters: Jigglypuff (Kirby) and Captain Falcon (Samus, although this one is a stretch). Luigi in particular started off as a clone of Mario and diverged into his own unique character, so dissimilar to Mario that he's barely considered a semi-clone of him in the current iteration of Smash (or not at all if I'm not mistaken). The term "Luigification" describes characters across all fighting games who start off as clones or reskins (like the ninjas in the original Mortal Kombat games, Ken and Ryu, etc.) and gradually develop their own unique traits and moves. Luigi as a character outside of Smash went through this process too; in 1981, he was a simple recolor of Mario, and now he's recognized across the globe as a totally distinct character who just happens to wear similar clothes to Mario.
In short, the lack of mentioning of Luigi in this video was a little vexing. He started this cloning shit, and this is the thanks he gets? Lol.

Also for some of your arguments, idk why you used Steve as an argument against the "lack of enough source material" when Wii Fit Trainer would be a much better example. As for Dark Samus and Lucina, Dark Samus is extremely distinct from Samus, and Lucina playing like Marth ironically does not represent her properly at all since even if she disguised as Marth, she in no way fights like Marth. She isn't as regal as him and as you've said, is taught by Chrom, who arguably are moreso rugged in battle and more aggressive than regal and poised.

They could have had Simon focus more on traditional zoning by giving him more angleable whip attacks and a different up b, while Richter plays more like Young Link where he focuses on using his projectiles to rush down opponents. I think they were going for a more "generalized" moveset for the Belmonts, but that makes it even more bizarre that Simon is the primary when nearly everything down to the idle animations is from Richter. Not everything ofc, but up b, dash attack, the idles, the down tilt, etc. Most of the important moves. They could give Simon a better whip dangle, have him swing around with the whip more, maybe give him the leather whip even? There's still potential to make Simon different. You could make Simon have worse mobility and air stats to have him represent the more rough movement of the old games, and keep Richter with the same mobility they have now to have him represent the newer,, more athletic Belmonts. This opinion began to form way before I played Smash competitively because I was only a child, but I'm personally very fond of clone characters such as Roy, Young Link, and Falco in Melee. When I grew up playing with my older cousin he'd for example play someone like Fox and I'd see Fox and say "oh Fox looks like fun, but I don't want to play the same character he's playing" so I'd pick Falco. That type of mindset made me fall in love with a lot of "clone" characters across multiple fighting game franchises. Even though some clone characters end up much worse than others, I like Melee Marth versus Melee Roy more than Marth vs Lucina because despite Roy being bad in Melee, Roy and Marth each had their own form of skill expression based on how their sweet spots worked, whereas Lucina essentially functions as removing the complexity of an existing character, which I haven't liked since her inclusion into Smash 4. Clone characters can appear similar and still possess their own unique complexity when created well (such as Link, Toon Link, and Young Link all playing differently despite sharing so many similar tools), so I hope to see them in the future but even better than before.

It sucks so much because not only are they just not well done in terms of giving them even slightly unique attributes that make them feel different enough to use them from their original source, but even if they do just go for the copy and paste idea, they don't give us a lot of characters for this to be a meaningful category.
And both of these issue are so easy to fix. The former is all just numbers and coding (maybe make Dark Pit more powerful with less combo potential, let Richter's moves from his games be better while the ones from Simon's games are worse, and vice versa for Simon), and the later, while a bit more difficult, is only changing the animations of extra factors, like idle animations, taunts, and victory poses.

Dark Samus does not use her Morph Ball when rolling, and she does not somersault while double jumping or jumping backward. This makes her hurtbox larger during those animations.
All of Dark Samus' smash attacks have altered animations. This slightly influences the horizontal range of all versions of forward smash, with the unangled version having marginally less horizontal range, while the up and down angled versions have marginally increased horizontal range. However, Dark Samus does not move back as quickly during forward smash's ending lag. This makes it slightly less safe than Samus' version. This allows up smash to hit shorter opponents more reliably than Samus' version at the cost of KOing grounded opponents slightly later.
Charge Shot has an altered animation, in which Dark Samus performs the move one-handed. This results in the projectile being fired at a slightly lower elevation, but her hurtbox is taller during the animation compared to Samus' version, making her easier to hit. This allows Charge Shot to hit low-profiling opponents more easily. However, this makes it slightly easier for opponents to jump over the projectile
Dark Samus' animations for firing a Homing and Super Missile are different. She does not hunch over as much as Samus does when firing a Homing Missile, making her hurtbox taller and easier to hit. Her animation for firing a Super Missile in the air is much longer than Samus' version.

Mario and Dr Mario are unique fighter slots even though their movesets are almost identical, while Ryu and Ken are echo fighters despite having toally different A moves. Then multiple of them (Daisy dSamus, Richter) have minimal/nonexistant functional changes from the base fighter. Then there's Alph, Zombie, Enderman, and the Koopalings, who also have only cosmetic differences, but are skins instead of echoes...
I think every pair of echo fighters should've had some meaningful difference from each other, even if it was just a small change in mechanics like Marth and Lucina, and more should have been classified as such, like the Marios, Links, Pikachu/Pichu, or Villager/Isabelle. That way echoes would've been seen less as "clones" and more as alternate versions of an existing fighter, like they were meant to be. Would also greatly resuce clutter on the select screen.
Would've been cool to see more of them added with the above in mind, here's some ideas:
-Octoling, uses different weapons. Carbon Roller, Range Blaster, Burst Bomb, maybe even Splat Charger nspecial, etc
-Proto Man, a bit more damage than Mega Man but also lighter to reference his frailty in mm9 and 10
-Birdo: replaces tongue with slow, straight flying egg projectile
-Dixie Kong: uspecial uses her hair propellor, nspecial fires her bubblegum gun from Tropical Freeze, which acts differently than Diddy's peanuts (not exactly sure what would change)
-Shadow: replace homing attack with chaos spear projectile
Scream Tail: Sing replaced with Hyper Voice, does damage and stuns. Rest Replaced with Sunny Day, temporarily buffing its speed and damage (referencing the protosynthesis ability)

I'm still baffled as to why the custom moves from Sm4sh weren't incorporated into some echoes. The Miis are capable of using them online and offline, so it's clearly not a software issue. Just seems like a waste of creative effort.

I still swear Lucina should've had a moveset similar to Ike given her actual fighting style in the original game, her only ties to Marth are the fact that he's her ancestor and she used his name briefly.

Echo fighters mess up the in-game player stats screens too. Not a big deal for most people I imagine, but I used to *love* looking at them and going, "whoa, *that's* my 4th most-played character? I never would have guessed!" or "wow, I'm doing pretty well with Marth!" and then Lucina joined, ate half his gameplay, and now they barely crack my top ten.
RIP Marth. One of my mains from 2001-Ultimate. Wish Lucina had just been a skin.

I never understood why people seemed to just accept echo fighters as perfectly fine characters. Even though Dark Samus, Daisy, and Richter are literally just carbon copies of their counterparts, Nintendo gets to advertise them as separate to bump up the amount of fighters in ultimate by a little and I haven't heard anyone talk about that until now.

    • @SSM24_
      @SSM24_ Год назад +4

I don't think that's entirely fair. To me, the "echo fighter" designation seems to indicate that they're _not_ just trying to artificially inflate the number of fighters. Nintendo is clearly acknowledging that they're not actually distinct enough to get their own fighter numbers.
Do I think they should've done a little more with these characters? Absolutely. But I think this viewpoint is a little too cynical.

They’re just bonus content, mostly for people that dont care that much about gameplay differences, I wouldnt bothered to play peach if it wasnt for daisy as an echo. Same for samus/darksamus and simon/richter, I play them all because I like metroid and castlevania.
