This is beautiful! Doy Ott was an outstanding baritone and should have been featured MORE in my opinion. We heard so much about Jake, Rosie and the "Chief", but Doy may have been the best voice in the group. He never did receive the recognition he rightfully deserved. Was also an outstanding gospel pianist. Just my humble opinion, but I love to give my opinion! LOL! Anyway, thanks for this beautiful song from back in the 50s. LOVED IT! MoJoPiano
The Statesmen and The Blackwoods were Elvis's first favorite Gospel singers. His mother loved them also. Elvis a teenager would walk down to Ellis auditorium in Memphis and listen to the all night gospel sings this is where he met J.D sumner. after Elvis became famous he came back to Ellis and performed this song on stage " Where Noone Stands Alone" Elvis always had the gospel in his life RIGHT UP TO THE END when he was reading the book " The Face Of Jesus" when Elvis passed away 08-16th 77.....
Denver was my aunt's brother-in-law. I was 12 when he died in 1957. Didnt get into gospel music till after his death. I always told people it was Elvis on Saturday nite and the Statesmen on Sunday morning. Still remember the old 78's. Wish there was a video of Denver singing My God Is Real. Thanks for being able to see him.
@mcgoodle I think Elvis to a degree emulated every member of this group, so taken was he with their sound. His love for this type of gospel music (and others) was with him to the very day he died.
I'd like to hear that song myself. I was about 6 when he died. But, I loved gospel music even at that age. I'm glad there's this site otherwise I would have never experienced his beautiful voice.
I never got to see the Statesmen in person but did get to see Jake Hess and talk with him briefly and shake his hand when Bill Gaither was in Knoxville some14 years ago. It was a great experience to say the least to meet this legend.
If you watch and listen to a lot of Statesmen videos, you can hear how Elvis was influenced by Jake Hess' vocal phrasing, and by Big Chief's movements and stage presence. This is no knock on Elvis; I love Elvis. But it is cool to see that he too had favorites that he was emulating. Man, I wish that the 70's, 80's, and 90's never happened!

I agree with everything calliethecowgirl says about Elvis, except I'm sad to say he wasn't reading a book on the Shroud of Turin when he died. That is a myth.

Doy Ott played the piano for the Statesmen while Hovie was away in the Army. He also played the Accordian. 💙💙💙

Denver Crumpler the tenor was amazing. Shame he left us so early.
What a wonderful voice Doy Ott had! Perfect! ♪
PAULO BASS yes he did! Best baritone in sg!

My grandmother played piano for Doy Ott during the State convention long ago. She was always really proud of that fact
Wow! This is my first time to hear Doy sing lead. I've heard Jake, Hovie & Rozie, of course, but to hear Doy...He had such a smoothe voice, so full.
They truly were the perfect quartet. I wish I could have enjoyed them in person.
Doy Ott was an awesome baritone!!!!!!
This is the 1st song I heard Doy Ott take the Lead on, a GREAT Baritone Voice !
These classics bring back great memories with timeless messages!
Statesmen! They are the absolute best and nobody comes close in my opinion!

They're also similar to the ink spots who influenced him as well.
Doy Ott was my favorite baritone in quartet music. He was a real gentleman to talk with also.
Doy Ott is the best, I love him, he is so handsome and gentlemanly.
I have a sister in law named Doye, after Doy Ott. Her mother loved Doy and named her daughter after him. I think that is neat!
This video was a pleasant surprise.
I liked this a lot !

which one do you mean? They are all dead now and in Heaven. xx

This line-up of the statesmen quartet = perfection. just this.
What a great voice.
I love it makes me think of the old office on woodruff road
I was about 16 when I first heard this. How wonderful to hear it again Thank you Thank you.

What T.V. show was this?
They just don't make songs like that anymore.
