Glad you did this subject. I've been learning more about the Ethiopian canon recently and saying that Enoch is the Messiah definitely seems like a trump card for the 'no' side.

@@carnal61 well Saint Athanasius blessed the first Ethiopian bishop who was Syrian (he introduced the faith to the emperor as a slave) the Ethiopian church as a whole is part of the general oriental orthodox community.
One of the most valuable insights we get from the book of Enoch is a look into how 2nd Temple Jews thought about the title "Son of Man". This is important context for Jesus' use of the title in the New Testament. This, of course, does not mean Enoch is authoritative. Just that it provides interesting and useful historical context.
What I find interesting is so many will rather read the book of Enoch than the Bible. They will find any and every excuse to claim it to be canon when the vast majority of scholars and even Jewish doctrine do not consider it inspired

@@pafoneto1275 Book of Enoch is not in the Bible, but Enoch is mentioned early in Genesis. And is "mysterious" cause it doen't say he died like the others, but that he was close to God and then was taken up to heaven. A bit like Elijah, who was taken up directly and without dying.

All to often people seem to want to treat Enoch as scripture or proof that the canon was altered. Don't forget Dr. Heiser asserts Enoch is not inspired but also that not being inspired doesn't mean it can't refer to real mytho-historical events (with cognates in pagan theology no less).
If Babel was true, all the residents living their would have have had a similar understanding (memory of current and past events) and would have taken them to their new nations. Over time these stories would have reflected their new histories...especially of they were assigned a son of God that had its own agenda (Psalm 82).

These so-called scholars roll everything into one and then say..."ah-ha, got cha." And truly, there were no correlations at all. As if I wrote a book and said, "he went to the store." Their interpretations would be, he stole that line from this book, or this author who wrote the same phrase back in blah-blah.
@@mariahyohannes It depends on what you consider the universe to be. They now say there are/could be multiple universes. Is the universe simply a grouping of stars? Well outside of that then is simply darkness forever. It has to be forever because I can't imagine a wall being at edges of the universes, if you know what I mean. I personally believe that the Books of Enoch contain some truths to be gleaned from it; but, due to it's great antiquity, it became too corrupted to be included in the canon. I have read somewhere that Paul carried it with him in all his travels.
Jesus taught his disciples that they should travel light so it is unlikely Paul would bring any Enoch fan fiction with him. You know if there was no truth in Enoch, nobody would swallow it. Of course there is a bit of truth, enough to conceal the poison. Any "truth" to be gleaned from 1 Enoch can be found in the Old Testament. 1 Enoch is essentially worthless for any Christians. The only people who value it are people who have not come to Jesus and so they still hunger and thirst.
From what parts of Enoch of I’ve heard I’d say where it’s most useful is understanding the end times because it talks about things like the watchers and nephalim and how fallen the world was before the great flood and it serves as a prophetic parallel to the end times and the return of Christ.

I think parts of it could be, but it’s a slippery slope. Several writers? All it takes is one being right to have some validity. Again, tho, when it’s hard to tell what is or isn’t, it’s best to keep it removed from canon and study it with surgeon gloves

I went down the rabbit hole of the Book of Enoch after realizing it would have had to have been considered important enough to be preserved by Noah taking it on the ark. Then when I saw the mention of the 365 day year I realized it had to be false.
@aaronshipp8766 That’s simply untrue. A typical year is 365 days. A leap year is 366 days. Fun fact, this is why some devotions will be written for 366 days. Edit: I have since been informed that the original commenter was not saying that there aren't 365 days in a year, but the Book of Enoch states this. Apologies to the OP and may God bless you.
Depends on the version of Enoch. There is a Qumran version and a Coptic, etc. Even if it is partially or entirely accurate in its original form it was obviously corrupted by the time we got it. It predates Gilgamesh, another corrupted version of the story. But it's still useful in context and subservient to known cannon and truth as adjacent. It it's original form... it was probably inspired and accurate, predating the flood. Even if it was compiled later, it doesn't negate the possibilities. It shows why Moses would have had to correct and standardize the cannon in his era.
If you count the Psalms as 5 books instead of 1 (since they are literally 5 books and are headed as Book I - Book V), then the Bible has 70 books, which seems to imply the Bible is already complete and perfect.
---- meanwhile, the Catholics ( which names implies "we were here first" ) already have 73 books in their Canon: I guess if they left Psalms as 1 and then made 1st & 2nd Kings, 1st & 2nd Sam, and 1st & 2nd Chron into 3 books theirs would be 'perfect' also ? I would like to read a book where a scholarship looks at the historic writings of those who took scripture seriously and who wrote what is considered scripture today in view. And speak to the implications of how the nature of belief in length of time from creation to the present would be effected in understanding the purpose of prophecy and eschatology.

I'm glad you did this. can you please do the examination for the book of Esdras too. because 2 Esdras 7:28 mentions the messiah as the Son of God... 2 Esdras (or 4 Esdras) is considered cannon by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. It is widely cited by the church fathers. and most scholars agree that it was originally written in Hebrew. so please....thank you and it was in the Greek Septuagin.
Heiser says Enoch is not canonical but does state that it is an accurate reflection of 2nd temple Jewish thought, especially in regards to Demonology and Angelology. It was a response to the pagan milieau they lived in. It expanded on how the four falls contributed to sin in the world (Fall of Adam, Fall of Satan, Fall of the Watchers, and Fall of the sons of God). The book can be viewed as containing truths of our past but not God inspired.
IP were right, 1st Enoch is probably more of like a commentary on these days. As we quote from some modern commentaries, probably we agree with the commentator on one topic but disagree over another topics, because it seems doesnt make sense for us, so we tend to look another commentary for reference.

FINALLY! I have been wondering for so long, had many an argument, and stayed confused as to why it was not included in the Bible or at least considered Holy Scripture. Most of the time, the argument was "because they said so" and my response was "oh so it SHOULD be part of the Bible, because I said so." Of course, the opposing party would state it doesn't work like that, which confused them that I agreed. Just because someone says so doesn't mean its suddenly Holy Scripture or not; the Bible has copious amounts of actual proof built within it to combat that very problem. SO. Now that I have watched this, and saw that in the book of Enoch it states that Enoch himself is the Messiah - which suddenly contradicts the very doctrine of the Bible itself - and thus cannot be considered scripture. Never a good reason for years and it ended up boiling down to a single sentence. Ugh...

The answers I got were: "I don't know" - Which would be reasonable but I was asking people who claimed to be experts. "Because ancient scholars said so" - Which you heard my argument about it in my original post. "It wasn't in an accepted style" - This one upset me the most. The Bible is written over hundreds if not thousands of years, in 3 different languages, covering multiple continents, kingdoms, and cultures. But suddenly the issue for the Book of Enoch wasn't accepted because of it's "style"? And what "style" would that be? "uh... I don't know" Yea figures... @@macv2792 In the book of Enoch, it claims the Messiah has another title of "Son of Man". In 1 Enoch 71:14, it has Enoch having a vision where an angel comes to him and tells him that HE is the "Son of Man" and thus the messiah. As for Son of Man, 1 Enoch 48:2-10 is a whole rant about how Son of Man is the Messiah. So recap: 1 Enoch 48:2-10 = Son of Man is the Messiah. 1 Enoch 71:14 = Enoch is the Son of Man. Thus, in the book of Enoch, Enoch is claiming to be the Messiah. Since we all know Jesus is the Messiah, the book of Enoch fails it's attempt to be Biblically accurate, and thus is not scripture.

Can you do a deep dive into the Book of the Watchers’ validity on its own? As you said, Enoch was several writers. I think that book is the one most looked at as valid.
@Stuart Donnelly I mean, for that, people update place names. They did it with Moses, too. Exodus. The city wasn’t called Rameses back then. They also did it with Genesis several times.
I have a question concerning the separate sections of Enoch, especially the book of parables (one that’s definitely written way after the other books in 1st Enoch). Since in the book of parables, it seems to show Enoch being a messiah/Son of Man rather than Jesus, what should we make of this?
@@clayton4349 it may be a mistake caused by translators or people's misunderstanding of what that passage says. I have seen a wrongly translated verse in the Bible which says a man should marry a woman he raped instead of saying a man should marry a woman he had sex with.
I think people seen to confuse what IS canon from Enoch and what isnt. If we go with the early writings of the greek septuagint and dead sea scrolls, then the spiritual rebellion in genesis 6 that is expanded on in greater detail in 1st Enoch, should be believed to be real. I believe it's real at least. We can trust scripture, and we can use Enoch as a tool to paint the picture in our mind as to what happened. I feel that if anything came from the real Enoch, it would be the account of the watchers of mount hermon and their offspring the nephilim being passed down orally into even the time of moses ( who quotes the incident at babel in deutoronomy 32:8 and also kills Og of Bashan, and the israelites know what nephilim are). I think Heiser's observation of the ancient near east being that Sumer recognized the annunaki as originally coming from Mount Hermon ( which is significant given how far west the mountain is from Ancient Sumer). We can also trust the account of Enoch's trip into tartarus, as the fallen stars in chains and gloomy darkness is quoted in Jude, and the lake of fire which is enochic literature is quotes by Jesus himself. The rest about the metatron, and Enoch being the messiah we can throw out the window. I figured God inspired this stuff into the scripture, but it gets listed as an afterthought for two reasons. 1) So much awesome of God's work takes place in Genesis, so giving these giants and fallen angels any credit wasnt bringing much to the solution to be disciples of Christ through loving God with all our hearts and loving our neighbor as ourselves, And 2) It was being told through the perspective of the Victors, and if Genesis was indeed from Moses, then surely he would have gotten the details from God himself during the time of Sinai, since its described that God and Moses were close friends. So I have the feeling the walk God took with Enoch was real as mentioned in Genesis, and on this walk Enoch saw the punishment for the sin of the watchers, the giants, tartarus and how God has a plan that would be fulfilled through Jesus.
I recently listened/read these 3 books presented by Christopher Glyn and I was just floored! I believe with my heart these books are real and true. I was hooked from the book of the watchers to the end of the last. I did not ever get the impression or interpretation that Enoch ever thought or was told he was the Christ. In many many chapters in these books he writes about what and who the Messiah is as well as being shown where HE lives and all the souls who love and follow him will come to live. I just know that I agree totally with this comment besides the interpretation that Enoch was " THE SON OF MAN, MEANING MESSIANIC FIGURE" He that was before the Head of Days, walked beside Head of Days and Enoch asked who was this? The answer wasn't himself, lol
I think this is interesting, but if it were canonical in any way/shape/form then I believe it would have further supporting scripture. The Bible hardly operates on half truths or partial truths and to include canon from something that isn’t “fully” canon is a little sus. It’s also a lot to expound on for 1 verse in the Bible, especially since it’s suggested that it didn’t arrive until way after the writings of the Torah. However, I do appreciate your perspective on this and take it as something to consider.
@@GabeGarsia Well, I wouldnt call this a half truth. We have Enoch, Jubilees, Jasher and the book of giants all referencing this calamity of nephilim. Furthermore, the neighboring countries like Egypt, Greece, and Babylon all worshipped these kings or heroes of old like Hercules, Theseus or Gilgamesh.

Why can't everyone appreciate and enjoy what we have which is life and this beautiful blue marble among a large area of rather lifeless space. If by “Pro-Enoch fan”. You mean people who do not see 1 Enoch as canonical but value it as an important pseudo-biblical source, then I believe yes. You’re right. And Only because this video spends 3/4 of its content drilling you about how 1 Enoch is not canon. (Duh.). Anyone with half a brain can figure out that this book has major theological flaws and contradictions. But it’s still an important book for people who do serious Bible study. It amazes me how people claim authority for determining what's scripture and what isn't. Absolutely inconceivable. Especially the 66 books club. What fools. What we consider canon today is different than how they considered it I'm the 1st century. Firstly, the Gospels weren't canon in the 1st century, so, shouldn't we toss those? Also, while the other books were not canonized, this does NOT mean the other books didn't have any authority. After all, Luke mentions another Kainan I'm 3:36, and the only book that mentions this other Kainan is Jubilees. Older versions of the LXX didn't have Kainan, but was added much later.
I'll admit, the only thing I really know about the Book of Enoch is what's in the video game that used the text for its story and inspiration (El-Shaddai). It was a fun game and really interesting though, and I always wondered about the actual Book of Enoch. So this was fascinating to listen to.
So, the thing that is significant is not THAT they quote it but HOW they quote what they quote - bracketing it with "As it is written" or words such as this. That makes sense.
The book of Enoch is what's called "pseudepigrapha" or books that attempt to imitate scripture but were written under false names or attributed to a figure of the past.

When it comes to missing passages, because of their scarcity, the absence of them doesn't necessarily mean that is the evidence of their actual absence.
growing up in Christian tradition I never heard about the book of Enoch till encountering apologistic video's or arguments and following this video it seemed I did not miss much in the past and the Enochian arguments seem to have a high Hancock-Bauval-von Danicken value when apologists refer to it. At best the Book of Enoch looks to me like a kind of Lord of the Rings of it's time. Interesting but worth purchasing and reading? I doubt it.

IP, you should really do a video on the Book of Jubilees! Given it was considered Torah by John the Baptist’s sect of Judaism, and clearly teaches Young Earth Creationism, it should be covered with relation to your Genesis series. Jubilees shows us what Jews before and during the time of Christ believed about creation and none of it left room for evolution. I would be curious to know if the book of Enoch‘s reference to the 70 weeks prophecy in Daniel is included in the oldest part or later parts. If it is found in the parts considered to be the oldest, it could be another line of evidence to show that Daniel was not written in the 2nd century B.C. as some scholars claim..
It's so amazing that the scholars have the power to decide what the word of God is and what it is not. I for one will forever regard the book of Enoch and other apocryphal texts as the word of God❤
FYI Ben Sira, or Bar Sirach, is a canonical book in Orthodox and Catholic churches. It's a very nice book, I particularly like chapter 9 and read it as part of the old testament. So, only the protestants exclude it from the canonical books.

I’m neither pro or anti-Enoch. I’m Coptic and in the Coptic Orthodox Church, Enoch is not canon. And authorship is not an issue. Just because it’s not “by Enoch” doesn’t take away its inspiration. I think we can draw some inspiration from this no different from the rest of scripture.

(and that is the case in places). Example: what is the abyss/bottomless pit (Book of Rev and demons interacting with Jesus at the tombs), who or what is Azazel? (scapegoat), what are the "angels that sinned", what are demons?, why is "the son of man" seemingly a completely understood term referring to messiah when it is not used often in the canonical OT scriptures in that way? (But it is common in I Enoch) Is it likely that Enoch would be referred to as having "prophesied" and having "pleased God" in the NT, when no reference to that activity, or of anything he said or taught was extant at the time and commonly available? If it was then contemporary material that was passed down orally, then why is such not given any spiritual credence in most Christian circles? If no information about this was available at the time, then would not those receiving such statements think "what is he talking about"?

Enoch words and thoughts are not his own but those put into his mouth and mind by the authors for their own purposes. Of course the earliest Christian writers plundered it, they did the same with whole chunks of Jewish scripture. It was canon for many Christians and Jews until they realised it was mad as a bucket of frogs and chucked it as an embarrassment. Rabbi Akiva is a part of a disputation on the canonicity of the Song of Songs and Ecclesiastes in the Early 2nd Century (Mishnah Yadayim 3:5) Likewise, Rabbi Ben Mari (Babylonian Talmud, Baba Kamma 92b) "[It is] mentioned a third time in the writings (ketuvim), as written: "Every Fowl dwells near its kind and man near his equal [Sirach 13:5]", which could be as late as the 5th Century AD. The redaction was a part of the Tosefta, which was written in the 3rd Century AD, but it's clear that not all rabbis apparently got the message.
I think it's interesting to note that the Ethiopian/Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Churches are the only two churches that recognize the book of Enoch as scripture.
you can see it has influenced books, namely Revelation. "visions of Enoch about the Son of Man" and in Revelation, portions such as "....and I saw" speaking of visions of John. I take it as influencing in literary style and form. Not necessarily as influence because of historic accuracy. Being that I believe John indeed received visions while exiled at Patmos. Scripture or no, it was highly regarded. And Peter and Jude had it in their cosmology - which is important for us to understand when we read scripture. Dr Heiser also uses this book as a compliment to the Deut 32 worldview. In fact his commentary on demons draws on Enoch extensively. I would love to hear from you in regards to the apostles cosmology and how they saw the realm of the Lord of Spirits.

One of the most valuable insights we get from the book of Enoch is a look into how 2nd Temple Jews thought about the title "Son of Man". This is important context for Jesus' use of the title in the New Testament.
This, of course, does not mean Enoch is authoritative. Just that it provides interesting and useful historical context.
What I find interesting is so many will rather read the book of Enoch than the Bible. They will find any and every excuse to claim it to be canon when the vast majority of scholars and even Jewish doctrine do not consider it inspired

Don't forget Dr. Heiser asserts Enoch is not inspired but also that not being inspired doesn't mean it can't refer to real mytho-historical events (with cognates in pagan theology no less).
If Babel was true, all the residents living their would have have had a similar understanding (memory of current and past events) and would have taken them to their new nations. Over time these stories would have reflected their new histories...especially of they were assigned a son of God that had its own agenda (Psalm 82).

These so-called scholars roll everything into one and then say..."ah-ha, got cha." And truly, there were

I personally believe that the Books of Enoch contain some truths to be gleaned from it; but, due to it's great antiquity, it became too corrupted to be included in the canon.
I have read somewhere that Paul carried it with him in all his travels.

Jesus taught his disciples that they should travel light so it is unlikely Paul would bring any Enoch fan fiction with him. You know if there was no truth in Enoch, nobody would swallow it. Of course there is a bit of truth, enough to conceal the poison. Any "truth" to be gleaned from 1 Enoch can be found in the Old Testament. 1 Enoch is essentially worthless for any Christians. The only people who value it are people who have not come to Jesus and so they still hunger and thirst.
What great antiquity? It was written in the intertestamental period.

From what parts of Enoch of I’ve heard I’d say where it’s most useful is understanding the end times because it talks about things like the watchers and nephalim and how fallen the world was before the great flood and it serves as a prophetic parallel to the end times and the return of Christ.

I went down the rabbit hole of the Book of Enoch after realizing it would have had to have been considered important enough to be preserved by Noah taking it on the ark. Then when I saw the mention of the 365 day year I realized it had to be false.

@aaronshipp8766 That’s simply untrue. A typical year is 365 days. A leap year is 366 days. Fun fact, this is why some devotions will be written for 366 days.

Depends on the version of Enoch. There is a Qumran version and a Coptic, etc. Even if it is partially or entirely accurate in its original form it was obviously corrupted by the time we got it. It predates Gilgamesh, another corrupted version of the story. But it's still useful in context and subservient to known cannon and truth as adjacent. It it's original form... it was probably inspired and accurate, predating the flood. Even if it was compiled later, it doesn't negate the possibilities. It shows why Moses would have had to correct and standardize the cannon in his era.

If you count the Psalms as 5 books instead of 1 (since they are literally 5 books and are headed as Book I - Book V), then the Bible has 70 books, which seems to imply the Bible is already complete and perfect.

I would like to read a book where a scholarship looks at the historic writings of those who took scripture seriously and who wrote what is considered scripture today in view. Heiser says Enoch is not canonical but does state that it is an accurate reflection of 2nd temple Jewish thought, especially in regards to Demonology and Angelology. It was a response to the pagan milieau they lived in. It expanded on how the four falls contributed to sin in the world (Fall of Adam, Fall of Satan, Fall of the Watchers, and Fall of the sons of God).
The book can be viewed as containing truths of our past but not God inspired.
IP were right, 1st Enoch is probably more of like a commentary on these days.
As we quote from some modern commentaries, probably we agree with the commentator on one topic but disagree over another topics, because it seems doesnt make sense for us, so we tend to look another commentary for reference.

FINALLY! I have been wondering for so long, had many an argument, and stayed confused as to why it was not included in the Bible or at least considered Holy Scripture. Most of the time, the argument was "because they said so" and my response was "oh so it SHOULD be part of the Bible, because I said so." Of course, the opposing party would state it doesn't work like that, which confused them that I agreed. Just because someone says so doesn't mean its suddenly Holy Scripture or not; the Bible has copious amounts of actual proof built within it to combat that very problem. SO. Now that I have watched this, and saw that in the book of Enoch it states that Enoch himself is the Messiah - which suddenly contradicts the very doctrine of the Bible itself - and thus cannot be considered scripture. Never a good reason for years and it ended up boiling down to a single sentence. Ugh...
Age matters, it's one of 1000s of things you can use to prove that the Koran is false witness to God, that it came 600 years after Jesus 😂 that and it says Jesus was devout Muslim which makes me sick to stomach, even the pagans know Jesus was a Jew

"I don't know" - Which would be reasonable but I was asking people who claimed to be experts.
"Because ancient scholars said so" - Which you heard my argument about it in my original post.
"It wasn't in an accepted style" - This one upset me the most. The Bible is written over hundreds if not thousands of years, in 3 different languages, covering multiple continents, kingdoms, and cultures. But suddenly the issue for the Book of Enoch wasn't accepted because of it's "style"? And what "style" would that be? "uh... I don't know" Yea figures...
The worst part was people began shying away from talking to me about it. As if I was doing something wrong by asking "why". It really got on my nerves because I follow God FAITHFULLY, not blindly. He is the truth and is not afraid of my questions. Now I know the truth and can follow more faithfully.

@@macv2792 In the book of Enoch, it claims the Messiah has another title of "Son of Man". In 1 Enoch 71:14, it has Enoch having a vision where an angel comes to him and tells him that HE is the "Son of Man" and thus the messiah.
As for Son of Man, 1 Enoch 48:2-10 is a whole rant about how Son of Man is the Messiah.
So recap: 1 Enoch 48:2-10 = Son of Man is the Messiah.
1 Enoch 71:14 = Enoch is the Son of Man.
Thus, in the book of Enoch, Enoch is claiming to be the Messiah.
Since we all know Jesus is the Messiah, the book of Enoch fails it's attempt to be Biblically accurate, and thus is not scripture.
One of the things I noticed while chasing down the Enoch connection was that in the NT Enoch was quoted, not the Book of Enoch.

Can you do a deep dive into the Book of the Watchers’ validity on its own? As you said, Enoch was several writers. I think that book is the one most looked at as valid.
@Stuart Donnelly I mean, for that, people update place names. They did it with Moses, too. Exodus. The city wasn’t called Rameses back then. They also did it with Genesis several times.
I have a question concerning the separate sections of Enoch, especially the book of parables (one that’s definitely written way after the other books in 1st Enoch). Since in the book of parables, it seems to show Enoch being a messiah/Son of Man rather than Jesus, what should we make of this?
@@clayton4349 it may be a mistake caused by translators or people's misunderstanding of what that passage says. I have seen a wrongly translated verse in the Bible which says a man should marry a woman he raped instead of saying a man should marry a woman he had sex with.

Really appreciate your breakdown since after reading Enoch section 1, I was too exhausted and troubled in my spirit to continue.
I think people seen to confuse what IS canon from Enoch and what isnt.
If we go with the early writings of the greek septuagint and dead sea scrolls, then the spiritual rebellion in genesis 6 that is expanded on in greater detail in 1st Enoch, should be believed to be real. I believe it's real at least.
We can trust scripture, and we can use Enoch as a tool to paint the picture in our mind as to what happened.
I feel that if anything came from the real Enoch, it would be the account of the watchers of mount hermon and their offspring the nephilim being passed down orally into even the time of moses ( who quotes the incident at babel in deutoronomy 32:8 and also kills Og of Bashan, and the israelites know what nephilim are).
I think Heiser's observation of the ancient near east being that Sumer recognized the annunaki as originally coming from Mount Hermon ( which is significant given how far west the mountain is from Ancient Sumer).
We can also trust the account of Enoch's trip into tartarus, as the fallen stars in chains and gloomy darkness is quoted in Jude, and the lake of fire which is enochic literature is quotes by Jesus himself.
The rest about the metatron, and Enoch being the messiah we can throw out the window.
I figured God inspired this stuff into the scripture, but it gets listed as an afterthought for two reasons. 1) So much awesome of God's work takes place in Genesis, so giving these giants and fallen angels any credit wasnt bringing much to the solution to be disciples of Christ through loving God with all our hearts and loving our neighbor as ourselves,
And 2) It was being told through the perspective of the Victors, and if Genesis was indeed from Moses, then surely he would have gotten the details from God himself during the time of Sinai, since its described that God and Moses were close friends.
So I have the feeling the walk God took with Enoch was real as mentioned in Genesis, and on this walk Enoch saw the punishment for the sin of the watchers, the giants, tartarus and how God has a plan that would be fulfilled through Jesus.

I recently listened/read these 3 books presented by Christopher Glyn and I was just floored! I believe with my heart these books are real and true. I was hooked from the book of the watchers to the end of the last. I did not ever get the impression or interpretation that Enoch ever thought or was told he was the Christ. In many many chapters in these books he writes about what and who the Messiah is as well as being shown where HE lives and all the souls who love and follow him will come to live. I just know that I agree totally with this comment besides the interpretation that Enoch was " THE SON OF MAN, MEANING MESSIANIC FIGURE" He that was before the Head of Days, walked beside Head of Days and Enoch asked who was this? The answer wasn't himself, lol
I think this is interesting, but if it were canonical in any way/shape/form then I believe it would have further supporting scripture. The Bible hardly operates on half truths or partial truths and to include canon from something that isn’t “fully” canon is a little sus. It’s also a lot to expound on for 1 verse in the Bible, especially since it’s suggested that it didn’t arrive until way after the writings of the Torah. However, I do appreciate your perspective on this and take it as something to consider.
@@GabeGarsia Well, I wouldnt call this a half truth. We have Enoch, Jubilees, Jasher and the book of giants all referencing this calamity of nephilim. Furthermore, the neighboring countries like Egypt, Greece, and Babylon all worshipped these kings or heroes of old like Hercules, Theseus or Gilgamesh.

I think there are two Enochs inGenesis. One was the son of Cain and the other the seventh generation through Seth.

Rational well put together video. I've never understood so often with Christian sects the hope for "something more". Why can't everyone appreciate and enjoy what we have which is life and this beautiful blue marble among a large area of rather lifeless space. This we know and don't need to add fiction, or science fiction to an already great story that we know is pretty much true because we live it each day. But what about when Jude 14:15 quotes the Book of Enoch directly saying that Enoch "prophecied"? Why would Jude say that he prophesied if it wasn't canon?
Prophecy isn't writing a book. It would have said 'Enoch wrote a book'. Prophecy means saying a prophecy. Use your brain, God gave it to you to use.
@@cloverbird5785 You're missing my point. Evidence proves multiple contradictions and historical inaccuracies in Enoch, yet Jude says that he prophecies and many other parts of the Bible quotes it as if it were authoritative. There's an inconsistency that I'm trying to have answered here.

I'm pro-Enoch, and I don't hate IP. What IP says makes perfect sense. I'm still going to read Enoch and try to understand it but that doesn't mean Enoch has to be canon. I couldn't care less if Enoch was "official" canon or not.
Enoch isn't inspired but I think it is a recollection of something that actually did happen. I believe that the fallen angels are interdimensional beings and that in our ancient past they ruled over humanity as false gods.

And Only because this video spends 3/4 of its content drilling you about how 1 Enoch is not canon. (Duh.). Anyone with half a brain can figure out that this book has major theological flaws and contradictions. But it’s still an important book for people who do serious Bible study. What we consider canon today is different than how they considered it I'm the 1st century. Firstly, the Gospels weren't canon in the 1st century, so, shouldn't we toss those?
Also, while the other books were not canonized, this does NOT mean the other books didn't have any authority. After all, Luke mentions another Kainan I'm 3:36, and the only book that mentions this other Kainan is Jubilees. Older versions of the LXX didn't have Kainan, but was added much later.

I'll admit, the only thing I really know about the Book of Enoch is what's in the video game that used the text for its story and inspiration (El-Shaddai). It was a fun game and really interesting though, and I always wondered about the actual Book of Enoch. So this was fascinating to listen to.
What if the literary dependency is reversed? The Old Testament texts containing content from Enoch, not the other way around...

So, the thing that is significant is not THAT they quote it but HOW they quote what they quote - bracketing it with "As it is written" or words such as this. That makes sense.
The book of Enoch is what's called "pseudepigrapha" or books that attempt to imitate scripture but were written under false names or attributed to a figure of the past.

When it comes to missing passages, because of their scarcity, the absence of them doesn't necessarily mean that is the evidence of their actual absence.

growing up in Christian tradition I never heard about the book of Enoch till encountering apologistic video's or arguments
and following this video it seemed I did not miss much in the past and the Enochian arguments seem to have a high Hancock-Bauval-von Danicken value when apologists refer to it.
At best the Book of Enoch looks to me like a kind of Lord of the Rings of it's time. Interesting but worth purchasing and reading? I doubt it.

IP, you should really do a video on the Book of Jubilees! Given it was considered Torah by John the Baptist’s sect of Judaism, and clearly teaches Young Earth Creationism, it should be covered with relation to your Genesis series. Jubilees shows us what Jews before and during the time of Christ believed about creation and none of it left room for evolution. Cultural context is everything when studying Scripture, so I would love to hear your thoughts on this! God bless🙏

I would be curious to know if the book of Enoch‘s reference to the 70 weeks prophecy in Daniel is included in the oldest part or later parts. If it is found in the parts considered to be the oldest, it could be another line of evidence to show that Daniel was not written in the 2nd century B.C. as some scholars claim..

FYI Ben Sira, or Bar Sirach, is a canonical book in Orthodox and Catholic churches. It's a very nice book, I particularly like chapter 9 and read it as part of the old testament. So, only the protestants exclude it from the canonical books.

I’m neither pro or anti-Enoch. I’m Coptic and in the Coptic Orthodox Church, Enoch is not canon. And authorship is not an issue. Just because it’s not “by Enoch” doesn’t take away its inspiration. I think we can draw some inspiration from this no different from the rest of scripture.

@@PA1606X If, for example, I Enoch substantially contains material that substantially communicates that which Enoch said and communicated, it contains inspired material that may help our understanding of the Bible in areas where it lacks references necessary to understanding it. (and that is the case in places). Example: what is the abyss/bottomless pit (Book of Rev and demons interacting with Jesus at the tombs), who or what is Azazel? (scapegoat), what are the "angels that sinned", what are demons?, why is "the son of man" seemingly a completely understood term referring to messiah when it is not used often in the canonical OT scriptures in that way? (But it is common in I Enoch)
Is it likely that Enoch would be referred to as having "prophesied" and having "pleased God" in the NT, when no reference to that activity, or of anything he said or taught was extant at the time and commonly available? If it was then contemporary material that was passed down orally, then why is such not given any spiritual credence in most Christian circles? If no information about this was available at the time, then would not those receiving such statements think "what is he talking about"?

The book of Enoch is a fan fiction written between 300 bc and 100 ad.
Enoch words and thoughts are not his own but those put into his mouth and mind by the authors for their own purposes.
Of course the earliest Christian writers plundered it, they did the same with whole chunks of Jewish scripture.
It was canon for many Christians and Jews until they realised it was mad as a bucket of frogs and chucked it as an embarrassment.
Not sure you would agree with this analysis but it is (in a nutshell) the current historical one.

Rabbi Akiva is a part of a disputation on the canonicity of the Song of Songs and Ecclesiastes in the Early 2nd Century (Mishnah Yadayim 3:5)
Likewise, Rabbi Ben Mari (Babylonian Talmud, Baba Kamma 92b) "[It is] mentioned a third time in the writings (ketuvim), as written: "Every Fowl dwells near its kind and man near his equal [Sirach 13:5]", which could be as late as the 5th Century AD.
The redaction was a part of the Tosefta, which was written in the 3rd Century AD, but it's clear that not all rabbis apparently got the message.

I think it's interesting to note that the Ethiopian/Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Churches are the only two churches that recognize the book of Enoch as scripture.

This would also mean that Moses would have had the book, and other books would refer to it at least in some way
you can see it has influenced books, namely Revelation. "visions of Enoch about the Son of Man" and in Revelation, portions such as "....and I saw" speaking of visions of John.
I take it as influencing in literary style and form. Not necessarily as influence because of historic accuracy. Being that I believe John indeed received visions while exiled at Patmos. And Enoch being less than entirely accurate.
We have several dozen fragments of the ‘Scroll of the Book of the Words of Henoch son of Jared, 7th from Adam to All the Sons of Light in the Last Days...’ from the Dead Sea Scrolls & several quotations from the Books of Henoch in the NT e.g Jude 1:17-21
Let's check on Mat 22:29-30, what scripture that Jesus said, only found in Enoch 15. Maybe I'm wrong, but I believe Enoch should added to the scriptures.

This is really well documented and put together. Instead of just denying if 'The Book Of Enoch' should be a part of the Bible it presents with facts.
Scripture or no, it was highly regarded. And Peter and Jude had it in their cosmology - which is important for us to understand when we read scripture. Dr Heiser also uses this book as a compliment to the Deut 32 worldview. In fact his commentary on demons draws on Enoch extensively. I would love to hear from you in regards to the apostles cosmology and how they saw the realm of the Lord of Spirits.
