I just visited the memorial at the Cerritos Library not too long ago, two wings with the names of those who were lost. On another note, the air traffic controller involved in this accident was named "Walter White" This incident inspired the Breaking Bad plane crash.
I remember hearing about this crash when I used to live in Cerritos. It was a big shock to everyone because news that big happened in such a small town
I’ve seen a local mention that the elementary school the small plane crashed into is apparently haunted. She claimed back in ‘03 as a teenager she and her friends were parked outside the school at night after a local concert and saw 3-4 blood covered headless people walking around the playground aimlessly for a brief few moments. They only found out later about the double crash that happens years earlier. Crazy enough thought is that apparently the remains in the small plane were found to be decapitated in the real crash.
another mid air crash that was awful was one in Brazil where a US owned private jet's wing sliced part of a bigger airline's wing off. the airliner went on to break into several parts before crashing into the amazon forest. some of the local media then went on to say that the pilot of the small jet had been doing loopeedoos in the air so so the passengers would have a better view of the amazon. this wasn't true, and what had happened was the towers had them both flying at the same altitude. The amazing part in this story is the smaller jet managed to fly to a nearby airport and landed. it was after they were on the ground they found out what had happened. this crash was actually on an episode of Mayday called phantom strike
Jesus, I haven’t thought about this in a long time!! I witnessed this whole thing happen when I was a little kid. I heard the two planes collide with each other up in the air, and it sounded like a sonic boom. My dad thought it was the space shuttle returning to Edwards Air Force Base because it was literally supposed to return from space and land that day. Anyway, when I looked up part of the sky was blocked from this giant tree we had in our front yard, but I could see a puff of smoke and a street trail of smoke going straight down and a street trail of smoke going sideways disappearing behind our tree. To a little kid it look like there was a dog fight between jets, and that’s what I yelled to my dad was happening. Those straight streaks of smoke, and that big puff of smoke look like missiles, hitting something. As the seconds moved on, we start hearing the sound of jet engines at full throttle. Just like when a plane takes off at an airport. Th sound kept getting louder and louder until it was almost unbearable. As me and my father looks in the direction of the smoke and debris in the air we backed away from our large tree to see where that noise was coming from and suddenly we saw a Full sized jet liner, upside down, falling from the sky and coming straight towards us.! It was literally upside down, and its nose was faced right at us. My dad immediately grabbed me and we started sprinting away from it. We only got to the next house before it hits, and the explosion knocked me on my face.! as I got up and turned around, there was a gigantic mushroom cloud of black smoke and fire, along with pieces of debris and other things coming out of that explosion, and landing all over the place. There were bodies and pieces of bodies everywhere….. along with debris from the plane….seats from the plane…..and even a section of fuselage…..and the little plane that collided with the jet came down and landed right in the middle of our elementary school baseball field. I am scared to freaking death to this day to fly because of that experience! Such a crazy freaking day.
PSA flight 182 and a Cessna in 1978. Here's a different PSA colliding this time with a Helicopter. Also, unless the TCAS systems have changed, they require the affected aircraft to have their transponders on. I saw a report that the military helicopter did not have their transponder on. Being so close to the ground below 1000' feet, TCAS just gives a warning because instructing a maneuver could be dangerous - (see Juan Brown/Blancoliria Podcast). The Cerritos and other historic air collisions absolutely prove that the method of visual spot and avoid system is not a great method to use because this depends upon weather and lighting conditions as well as the actual positions of the affected aircraft. Especially planes have a lot of blind spots that can keep pilots from spotting other aircraft close to them. The ATC in the crash yesterday should have instructed the helicopter to fly below or above the plane or around the major landing and taking off traffic itself. That's my additional question: Why are the military aircraft flying so close to landing and taking off planes instead around this intense traffic patterns? In my opinion, this was an accident waiting for the right moment to happen.
