    Something I’ve noticed is how good the whistle sounds. On most locomotives here in the US the whistles are given too much or too little steam. Making them quiet and hard to hear most of the time

    What a project to undertake and what a successful and absolutely beautiful outcome.
    Congratulations. As a life long New York Central fan who remembers the non-streamlined Hudsons near the end of NYC's steam era, I am just thrilled to see this accomplishment,

    I am blown away. This project shows what can be done if one puts one’s mind to it (and posseses some unique skills). Well done. My guess is that having worked out all the solutions as to how to build this masterpiece, you could probably build replicas in short order and some wealthy train nerds would snap them up. Thanks for this comprehensive video.

    Such a beautiful locomotive and you guys did a fantastic job on it. At 11:46 you show the magnificent work the custom car builder did on the front shroud, and it got me to thinking about what he thought of the locomotive. I'm going on the assumption that being in Australia and being a car guy that he may have never seen an NYC Dreyfuss Hudson before. The photo you've included really shows the beautiful lines of the piece and how it flows so smoothly around the front of the engine. I wonder if a car guy became an Art Deco steam locomotive fan after doing that project for you.

    ROGER GOLDMANN'S very early "teens - twenties" Pilliod-Baker valve gear hanger I see. I have that going on to my now well under construction NYO&W Y Class (blt. 1923) #405 in Otto Kuhler's "Mountaineer" maroon, orange and black. The train's one and only original tail-sign, with the actual maroon and orange paint hues is in my collection.
    ---For ths Dreyfus Hudson to LOOK truly accurate, you really should have found (or made) the later style Baker hanger as C.A. Hoffmann offered decades ago. I have that correct style of hanger on my 1-1/2" scale N.Y.C. J3a as found in Joe Nelsons "So You Want To Build A Live Steamer" depicted in the chapter on valve gear.

    Nice job on the build! I assume you went with the piston valve design over the older slide valve? You said you have 3 tanks in your tender... how do you fill with one hatch?

    • @trainstuff5310

    1:41 slight issue with how you numbered it. you see while there was 10 J3a Dreyfuss Hudsons built, the J2 Hudsons originally from the Boston & Albany railway were given the numbers proceeding 5454. So 5455 was just a regular hudson and not a dreyfuss.

    • @James-Railyard
      @James-Railyard 5 месяцев назад

      Most likely they did not know this when building it. Honestly I didn’t know that before I started gathering nyc items and most wouldn’t know that without decent research.

    • @paulw.woodring7304
      @paulw.woodring7304 5 месяцев назад

      So would changing it to 5456 fix the issue? Should be easy enough to fix with vinyl numbers.

    • @James-Railyard
      @James-Railyard 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@paulw.woodring7304 the Dreyfus engines were 5445-5454. The 5450-5454 were the ones with the disk drivers like on the engine in the video. Now, there was an 11th being J1e 5344 when it was converted from the Commodore Vanderbilt to a Dreyfus to pull the Mercury but had a different paint scheme.
      I’d say the safe numbers would be 5450-5454 or 5344 and say it was painted for the Century.
