Here it is 2022 & I’ve been using you tip clips forever! You are the best at giving easy to follow instructions to take the guess work out of serging! Thank you so much. Would love to see you
I've had a serger for 27 years, but have never seen a zipper sewn like this. I'm new to quilting so these bags would be a great use of my free motion practice pieces, too! So glad to have come across this today; YIPPEE 😁
Thank you so much! I've seen this done but needed a refresher. I have a BabyLock serger but tend to stick to the basics...I think I'll now have a go at being more adventurous, especially as I make items to sell for various animal charities and need to be a bit more efficient. Cheers from England xxx
Hi Cathy, using a cording or piping foot to insert a zipper is surprisingly easy and gives a nice finished edge. The foot channel guides the zipper to make perfect stitching a snap. Let me know if you need help with anything and I’ll be happy to hear from you. Have a lovely holiday season and creative 2023!
I had a thought while watching this (5 years later since it was posted). I could add a layer of PUL as lining, so it could be an easy to make wet bag, for cloth diapers, cloth feminine pads, wipes, bathing suits (larger size bag), etc.
Hi DeryndaDiana, Thanks for watching. If you haven't tried this technique yet, you'll be amazed at how easy it is to get beautiful results for zippers on bags, home decor pieces, etc.
Thanks for a great video. Boy could a lot of bags be made in a very short time. I will have to gat this foot. I can see chain stitching these in my future. Assembly line sewing at it’s best!
Thank you Gail! I agree that these could made up for great little gifts or fund raising items so fast and inexpensively! I'd love to see you use this foot for applying piping or other decorative cording :)
Hi Sue, Cotton Blossom is a wonderful Shoppe -Cathy and Robin are fantastic! Glad the video was posted in time for you to make your bag. Hope to see you again at a sewing event and remember, you can always email any questions you have. Will be happy to hear from you! Enjoy the rest of the summer.
So glad to see another of your wonderful serger videos, Gail. I have some outdoor fabric that would be wonderful for some sturdy but lightweight little bags.
Thanks, Gail I attended your class at Cotton Blossom Fabrics in Madison, MS and made one of the bags. Unfortunately, I can not find the instructions and wanted to make them for my grandchildren. The video was exactly what I needed!
Great news, Laura. You’re welcome for the instructions but it’s also operator technique, so you can take credit too. Thanks for watching Serger Tip Clips!
Hi Juls, it is cool and amazingly easy. Have fun with the technique and you can make a bag any size as long as the zipper is 4” longer than the edge it’s serged to. Thanks!
Gail Yellen Thanks for the tip! I got a couple of rolls of endless zipper tape burning up in my stash! Today I serged and covered a lot of knits and thank goodness for your suggestion of using stabilizing tape! No more nasty rolls! It feltlike you were there coaching me along! ❤️
Even though I definitely enjoy your videos and your presentation I have 2 comments. I don't know if it was the fact that you didn't press the zipper after each side because it definitely did not look like even placement. And I don't know if you have somebody holding the camera or if it's on a tripod but I want to suggest trying manual focus because the camera was struggling to stay in focus. You may find that your camera lens has a decent enough depth of field that you can manually set the focus on something close but it will still remain in focus when you are sewing. Just provides a better user experience. 😊
Welcome to the world of sergers, Karen! You’ll love all of the things you can do . Will be happy to answer your questions. Check out my Pinterest Board, “Serge Outside the Seams” for fun “pinspiration.”
this works great on dress/standard zips but not very well on the larger or chunky resin type zips as the teeth are too big to fit in the piping groove. wish Brother/Babylock would make a foot that would work for bigger zips. Would be great for making jackets or larger projects
Hi Beazy, The sport zippers are often too large for the 5mm piping foot. Maybe one of the companies will develop a larger piping foot! Thanks for watching Serger Tip Clips!
You could also do this without quilted fabric, but regular fabric and batting fused between. I can envision this! It would certainly save a lot of time.
Beth P yes you can do this technique with many different types of fabric, but the double-sided pre-quilted fabric makes it super quick -especially for holiday gifts!😉
Hi Mary, that’s a great question. As of right now, I haven’t tried that application. But let me think about it and if I can develop a way to do a lapped zipper installation, I’ll do a Tip Clip. The wheels in my serger brain are turning and thanks for asking!
These bags can be made to any dimensions and are super easy and fast to whip up. They make great gifts and I can’t travel without mine. It holds all of my charger and connector cords. Thanks for watching Serger Tip Clips!
Gail, it's Vicki, on the L890 which piping foot do you use? C16 small or C16 large? When sewing the 2nd side of zipper tape, does it matter if zipper teeth are up or down? or does it matter? Thank you!
Hi Vickie, For a #3 zipper (dress weight), I use the C16L presser foot. No, it doesn't matter whether the zipper teeth are up or down, When the Presser foot is down, the teeth will track well in the channel of the foot. Let me know if you have any other questions and thanks for watching!
Technically, you could do this technique on a garment, but I would use a sewing machine for the best results. The appearance of the finished garment is the most important factor. Let me know if you have more questions and thanks!
Hi Robin, This Tip Clip was done using a Babylock Triumph serger. Here's a newer Tip Clip showing a variety of techniques using a BERNINA serger: ruclips.net/video/Ay_VGhO1ivg/видео.html. Let me know if you have questions and thanks for watching!
Hi Sandra, I’m on my way to Chicago right now and in the airport. The foot you need is a 5mm piping foot. Some brands also call it a cording foot. You can probably find a generic one that will fit your Elna if Elna doesn’t have one. Check with your local sewing machine dealer for guidance. Thanks for watching Serger Tip Clips!
You can still install a zipper on your Lauren. I couldn't find any pics with a close-up of the standard foot on the Lauren. You can still stitch with the zipper teeth under the standard foot (positioned left of the needles). Stitch slowly because the zipper teeth don't have a channel to under the foot to guide them and you want the stitching to be as straight as possible. Pressing the zipper might also help flatten it out a bit more. Check your iron temp so that you don't melt the teeth. Thanks!
Sorry for the delay answering your question. I'll be happy to answer anymore questions as you think of them. I love helping newbies! Using a serger and getting comfortable with it is practice, persistence and patience. But just let me know if you have dilemmas!

Thank you. I love teaching and seeing sewists succeed on their sergers.(How’s that for alliteration?🤣)
I have had a piping foot for 7 years with no clue how to use it. Thanks for all the tips and clear instructions.

Love this demo, Gail! I make these bags all the time but never on my serger!! Love the cording foot for the zipper! Thanks so much for sharing!! 💜
