  • Walking thousands of miles across the country is hard! Use these tips to aid in your journey and make planning and research a little easier. These are things I do and look at every time I'm planning on leaving for a new thru hike.
    Whether you're planning on hiking the appalachian trail, pacific crest trail, continental divide trail, or any of the 'shorter' long distance hike I hope this helps! From what to research before your hike, and general tips to have a more comfortable and successful time.
    Video in text form:
    jupiterhikes.com/2020/06/12/6-...
    I you're looking for a rundown of what we talk about here:
    - Who else is going to be out on trail? In front of you, behind you, and planning along with you
    - Look into past trip journals to learn and invest yourself in the trail you're hiking. A lot of information can be gathered from those that came before us
    - Pay attention to towns & resupply options, as how far away towns are from one another or if there is sufficient resupply options can change how you prepare
    - Buy Guidebooks, Maps, & Guthook. Start flipping through them to gain familiarity and further learn about where you'll be hiking
    - Look into the gear others used, take notes on what they liked and what they didn't and change your own backpacking kit from there
    - Look into historical weather data so you could potentially change when you'll be out there for more ideal weather, or how you could change your gear to better reflect the conditions you'll be facing
    Information is power!

    Great #1 video. As 70 yo husband and wife, we completed a “virtual” CDT in 2019, logging the mileage and elevation, plotting our progress with Guthook, but, rarely leaving the Missoula, MT area (although we did complete section hikes of the real CDT in MT). 2020, we completed a “virtual” PCT and did real section hikes from the Southern Terminus to Palm Springs, and once again plotted progress using Guthook. This year we’re doing a virtual AT.
    One of us was paralyzed due to a systemic MRSA infection in 2015, unable to stand, walk, or run, and wondering if we would ever move without some aid.
    We count our blessings every day we can be on a trail. Thank you for the RUclips content.

    I used to think that knowing too much about the trail was spoiling the hike. Now that I'm 62 and a little wiser, I think knowing as much as possible beforehand increases my enjoyment.

    Hey, I really like the effort you put in your videos and the quality of infos you share with us. It’s not just click bait vids, there is great knowledge here.
    On a personal side (got about 9000 miles of hiking and some solo off-trail like the Hayduke and the SHR), I don’t like to prepare much for trails anymore. It’s going to sound weird, but I have the bad habit of making a small difficulty look huge when I know what is coming and I have too much time to think about it. It stresses me a lot. I found out that facing an unknown situation and looking for a solution on the go is way easier for me. It’s clearly not a recommended way to do it, but I’m quite experienced and I do trust my abilities to adapt!
    Will be very happy to look at the next episodes.

    1. Find who else is out there
    2. Look into past trail journals
    3. Pay attn to resupply
    4. Get maps and guide books
    5. Start looking into gear
    6. Look at historical weather data

    My biggest tip is to use all milsurp gear and aim for a 20kg pack. I would recommend the 2kg French f2 and the 2.5kg British army modular sleep system for every single thru hike without exception. Non negotiable. You must carry a 3 litre water bladder or you will die. You must carry a Mora outdoor companion and also take a hammock incase you want to use a hammock. You'll need a 4m by 4m tarp just for the hammock in case it rains. Don't buy trail runners they are trash. Look at how many trail runners he has there you see they won't last 100 miles. Take one pair of full leather surplus patrol boots and goretex sealskin socks. Rain gear is goretex pants and goretex jacket because goretex is literally the only waterproof material worth having. If you can't follow these simple instructions you don't deserve to be in nature and you need to stay at home buddy

    Thanks, this was much needed! I'm planning the UHT this August as my first thru-may or may not have been inspired by your experience last year. It also seems like a good hike to do while in quarantine since there aren't any resupply towns to worry about and I live near Salt Lake. Your video both terrified me and got me really stoked for the hike. I'm still a little terrified about the idea of going, but these tutorials are coming just in time. So yeah, thanks!

    I love these videos, great information! Through watching other videos on AT thru hikers, I have made the conscious decision not to do a nobo starting very early, but to do a flip flop starting much later. I think watching those that fail is really helpful too. I know personally, when I start hiking, I dont want to start out miserable. For example, I won't start a hike in the rain, but I don't care if I get out there and it starts raining an hour later, and I would never start a thru hike in freezing temperatures. I would rather ease into it and allow my body to acclimate slowly. So I would rather start in May, maybe late April and to make sure I can get to Katadin before it gets to late (I'm no FKT hiker). I could start midway, hike north then flip back down to the starting point and hike south to Springer. That would put me far north in the heat of the summer. I would be starting out in decent temps and avoid the rainy season in Georgia, hike south in the southern states during cooler fall weather and hopefully miss out on the bubble heading out in the late winter, early spring from Springer. So many people start in February/March and shock themselves by plopping down in sub freezing temperatures without acclimating themselves and end up quitting be cause it is such a shock to their system. They end up miserable, and just go home. I dont want to do that to myself.

    Hey, Jupiter...love the videos...thanks for your efforts!!.....I have been looking at a lot of vlogs and whatnot, and one thing I would like to know more about (specifically, longer thru-hikes) is the footwear resupply methodology. I'm not sure how many I need to send forward...I'm hitting the PNT, and curious what your thoughts are.

    • @JupiterHikes
      @JupiterHikes  4 года назад +2

      Just get them sent along the way via Amazon as they start to die. Without past experience there's no way you'd know how often you'll want them, and sending them before you go you risk having to go hundreds of miles more pushing into injury with dead shoes trying to get to fresh ones. This way you can also make changes instead of assigning yourself one size or one brand from the get go when things might change. Amazon you could send to a hostel, or hotel, or trail angel mere days before. Everybodies feet and desires are different so I think this is the best way. The PNT is remote in some ways but it wouldn't be an issue, and if you make it all the way to Puget sound you could just go to the REI in Bellingham Washington to buy new in person

    • @JupiterHikes
      @JupiterHikes  4 года назад +1

      I don't remember where I got them but I think it was an amazon seller getting rid of old stock. Ebay can be a good place to look for shoes that have since been discontinued. I think I have 2 more pairs of 10v4 left so I've been looking for that new thing. The search is rough!

    Pppppp, prior planning prevents piss poor performance, common sense, if u don’t know what’n where your going u probably shouldn’t go out into the wilds, as you’ll become a liability who needs others to risk their lives to rescue you...happens every year in UK on easy small trails because people are unaware of places and weather conditions, and don’t carry emergency gear

  • @mars_hikes967
    @mars_hikes967 4 года назад +2

    I agree with everything in this video. However, some folks like to exaggerate. I will not drop names, but after watching certain vlogs you get the impression, that hiking somewhere is absolutely life threatening 24/7. It is constantly storming, snowing or dangerous animals wait behind every tree. I avoid getting fooled by this stuff by watching vlogs from female hikers, from exactly the same time and same place. There is snow in them also but usually they just smile and praise the beauty of the landscape. And there are hikers who accomplished for example triple crowns, even several times, who are unfortunately not worth your time, because they spread views from a century ago. Only because you are on a trail, your confederate flag tattoo isn't suddenly cool again. Now it would be a good time to remove or cover this BS before starting your sobo hike next month. Maybe klan gear would be great for sun protection but so far I have seen nobody hiking in it, I guess for a reason.
    If you plan to do a longer hike at a certain speed you absolutely need resupply packages or an entire support team that drives you to towns far away, for example from the PCT, to get useful food. At first glance you may think that folks like Mr Jupiter overplan and overprepare. You may revise your position, when standing at a gas station, where all the food they have, is basically an assault to your health, even without hiking. Yes you can live from Snickers bars for more than four days, even doing mileage, but after 500 miles I would not be so sure. Jupiters diet gets you over far more distance because it provides you with reliable calories, day in and day out. Although not 100 % understood by science, what you eat has an influence on your mood. If you are sad even before a climb, you may end up at the next brewery, maybe getting something much worse than a milk shake and too many times in a row. You only hear and read from folks where a thru-hike has turned their life for the better. Unfortunately I guess the opposite exists also.
