Mondragon, the Mauser Selbstlader, Tankgewehr 1918 and the MG 15 are already in the game! A Springfield 1903 with the pedersen device was in one of the trailers.
I got super excited when Battlefield 1 was announced, probably the most excited I've gotten about a game release in the last 7 or 8 years, until of course I notice the game play trailers showed regular infantry running around with experimental weaponry, prototypes, and borderline imaginary weaponry. When I saw a dude walking around in steel platemail wielding a heavy machinegun like The Heavy from TF2 cosplaying as a medieval knight I gave up all hope.
I have had the privilege of shooting a Schwarlose 1898 and I can say that the only reason it failed was manufacturing complexity and price to produce. Also its locking mechanism shares similarities to the modern AR/M16 series
As a history nerd in the 1980s I was fascinated by the Great War then. A garage sale I went to then had a lot of N.Y. Times Current History magazines from 1915-20 for sale, and I bought a few. The neighborhood had been sporadically developed from 1920 on, and their are still undeveloped lots in it, being sold to Central Valley farmers then, and seaside cottages never being built.
6:36 I actually have one of these. There may have been over 80,000 made, but this rifle is quite rare today being as it saw _very_ hard use during WW1 and few shootable examples survive today. Some of those examples that survived the war were turned into single-shot rifles for use by rear-echelon troops; their gas systems being gutted and reduced to straight pull action.
The Great War The game actually features the Vickers machine gun mounted on buildings w/ full water jackets. The standalone emplacements have the traditional mounts with the steel shield on them. QF-1s are also an emplacement. The MG 15 n.A. is a weapon available to the support class, while the MG 08/15 is the weapon given to one of the elite soldier pickups scattered on the map.
I love this channel so much. Not only because of the interesting content. Indy's way of talking and presenting everything is so amazing. He even speaks out german words. And not only Indy is amazing, the crew behind the camera is doing such a great job too! You guys are the best
An interesting weapon is the italian ''villar perosa'' FIAT mod 1915, also called ''pernacchia'' due to it's sound, it's considered the first machine "pistol" in history and a strong contender for the first SMG, it was used kind of like an LMG as a support weapon, it had 2 barrels with 2 magazines of 25 shots each (9x19 glisenti) and a combined rate of fire of 3000 shots/min
Indy! If you are in Poland, I would like to propose you a little trip to town Bolimow nearby Warsaw. Not to many people know this fact, but the first use of gas in battle had the place nearby Bolimow in 15 of January 1915. It was chlorine used against Russian in village Joahimow - Mogily (it means Joahimow - Tombs). Germans as usual, did not take into the consideration the weather in East of Europe, where the winters are frosty. The frost (-21 Celsius degree) made this gas useless. Just, in this temperature chlorine does not evaporate! And what is really special, the metal container which was used to transport this gas on the battle is now used as the fire-brigade bell.
+Meeko1010100112 The only factions available for now are the brittish, the germans and the usa. Russia is not gonna be in the basic game at it's release date. So, yeah, they actually did the late western front without trenches
Hi all at Great War I have now finished watching your whole playlist even watching ones I'd already watched enjoyed every one Just wanted to say thank you for all the work you guys have done putting the shows together and look forward to seeing the next two years
@ The Great War, Quote ''Or a young Michael Caine": Aaaaah, thank you. Now I can finally shut that little voice in my head up constantly asking "Who the hell is Indy reminding me of?", haha.
@@HerewardWake I literally can't even begin to understand your point of view, guns are also used for self-defense and sporting. They aren't just used for war and destruction.
@@HerewardWake if guns aren't used for sport wtf are civilian gun ranges used for lol also most hunting sports use shotguns not hunting rifles as hunting rifles aren't used for sport, they are used for another function in which guns are used 'hunting' - it's in the name. Not just war. Like it or not guns have become an integral part of society and ultimately will be for the foreseeable future. Stop getting buthurt over facts and things you can't change
@@HerewardWake I never said that there needs to be more guns in the world. And hunting rifles are still guns, they are very capable of killing people and that's is why hunting requires safety. Guns and weapons in general are a part of society and you may just have to deal with it like everyone else and stop being a snowflake.
'You have to wonder how many lives that decision (keeping red pantalons) cost?!' I would argue: Not that many. The French spend most of the first year making heroical attacks over open ground. Red trousers or not, even in Khakis you will lose badly if you do that.
I don't think that was really the point of what he was saying. I think he meant that any loss of life just because some politicians wanted red pants was bad enough.
Sending waves of men to their death in fanciful colors and with flying banners wasn't *just* a french thing in 1914, even though they were really crazy about it. IIRC, a famous french general charged on a horse with a saber during the first days of the war. He survived and helped stop the Germans at the Marne. Russians, Germans and Austrians did it too. The Bavarian army did pride itself for doing the same thing. The main difference between the Germans and French was the lack of heavy artillery on one side.
PlantPedaler Please no more rarely used/ secret weapons. It's already stupid in the Beta to watch 80% of the players running around with semi-automatics and automatics.
This just might be your best episode yet. As a firearms enthusiast and one time range master I love learning about guns. Admittedly I do not know much about World War 1 weaponry so this is a real treat for me. My area of expertise is Cold War era and forward.
+The Great War Lots of pics available on Google, many of which would be free to use - it's very well known about in the firearms world. It's arguably the world's first assault rifle (though 6.5mm Arisaka is really pushing it as an intermediate cartridge) with a 25 round detachable magazine and semi and full auto capabilities. They also were only made in 6.5mm Arisaka, using stocks captured Japanese ammunition from the earlier Russo-Japanese War, rather than locally produced ammunition. The gun had controllable recoil thanks to the weaker cartridge and foregrip. They were used in small amounts of the Eastern Front of WW1 to my understanding, but gained more fame for their extensive use by Soviet troops in the 1940 Winter War. I can't remember how many were made but I think it was around 8000 of them.
Where do you get the idea that there are "lots of pictures on Google that are free to use"? That is not how picture licensing works for professional production especially since we sadly produce in a country that does not have "fair use".
There's a huge gunshop near me and the owner is building a gun museum next door. He used to have a small amount of his personal collection on display and that included two Pedersen Devices with numerous magazines and ammunition. I can't wait for his museum to be finished.
As a battlefield 1 player, who has watched the Great War series since just a few months after it started, I have to thank you for putting the whole game in perspective for me. The Great War was kinda just touched on in school for me. WWII was a much bigger subject, with the higher death toll and the threat of global domination from the Nazis, the first one was mainly spoken of as a needless waste of human life, I think one of my teachers told me you could blame the cause on the rise of Nationalism and egotistic leaders. But there's so much more depth to it than that.. And you guys have really done your best to explain it wholeheartedly. I just wanna say that I personally deeply appreciate all the knowledge you've passed on.
The Pedersen device wasn't just a magazine, but rather a semi-auto conversion mechanism for M1903 rifles that replaced its bolt and fired a round based on the 32 ACP.
+Teco01ejg That conversion part is hidden in the term "altered Springfield" - didn't want to make it too complicated because we link to an extensive video in the end.
Hello the Great War team! :) I was wonderig if you could make a special about the southern slav nations within the Austro-Hungarian empire and their desire to create a united slavish state, which they also created after the breakup of the Austro-Hungarian empire and was called the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, which at first wasnt united with Serbia but then joined them because they needed their millitary protection and was later renamed into the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. That is a rly shortened version haha :) love the show and I am watching it from the start. Good luck in the future and good wishes from Slovenia :)
Indie, Thanks for a great installment. I shared it with my oldest son who wasn't allowed to have war toys as a kid, but who went on to become a very badass USMarine (go figure), and is now a prepper who is ready for when the SHTF and loves firearms.
Not entirely related, but I have one of the first SMLE's ever made. 1904 manufacture No1, no mark, no star, made by Royal Small Arms Factory, Enfield Borough, London. Not a "Long Lee", but an SMLE. Currently has 1913 wood furniture on it, but the action and barrel are from 1904.
2:46 "The Red Pantaloons." I read somewhere, I think it was "The Guns of August," that early in the war, some German and French troops bumped into each other in heavy fog. The German uniforms were Field Grey, so they were hard to see for the French. Because they wore red pants, many French troops became casualties.
Since you spoke about France, uniform and gear... "Fun" fact about the french prototype uniform in "kaki" ( gris-vert réséda modèle 1911 ) : One of the major supporter of this was the minister of war Maurice Berteaux but his death during a air meeting kinda end this ambitious project. His sucessor said about the old fashion red and blue uniform : " The blind and foolish attachment to the most showy color will have crual consequences. " However he didn't fight hard to adopt the new uniform.
as a fan of history channel's show Top Shot, i have seen the gun attachment called the corner shot. its interesting to learn that the idea behind that gun dates back 100 years.
The French Tried for years to get a Semi-Auto rifle, and almost did. It was 7mm, though I forget if it was Long Recoil or D-I (Direct Impingement like a m16 or a AG-42/Hakim) . Concerns over war breaking out before they were done re-equipping led to the failure of the project. It was used in limited numbers, though I can't find English sources for how it did. I forget the name though. Quite a few Semi-Autos popped from time to time, the BAR started as one, but due to weight he (Browning) modified it and it became a light machine gun. The Russians had the Fedorov but from what I can tell it was over complicated and more an Assault rifle then a MG. Still, by the 1920s we had some very good types, if not for peacetime budgets and the market crash we could have seen an adoption before the Garand (1936), though some like the Bang were bound for the scrap heap.
Indy is correct in saying "to Prussia" for the victory went to Prussia, what you are probably thinking when typing the comment would have meant France won, which is incorrect
"which was a humiliating loss to prussia" he said EDIT: Oh he means "it was a (france suffered a) loss to prussia". I understood as if "to prussia, it was a loss (prussia suffered a loss)"
i never knew much about world war one. most of the documentation ive read on it, made me think that a lot of the war was fought with bolt action rifles, beyonets, clubs, heavy mg's, and the like. i played battlefield 1 for the first time, and the amount of automatic weapons in the game confused me heavily. then i found this channel.
It’s so interesting how ww1 weaponry and armor was a mix of experimentation and medieval combat. I have to give Dice credit for using this to their advantage when making battlefront 1
I will suggest the M1915 Villar Perosa, which was covered by Forgotten Weapons recently. It was an Italian aircraft mounted machine gun that quickly became obsolete but its actions were eventually converted into submachine guns before war's end. Few unconverted Villar Perosas remain.
I have one of those periscopes, a junk shop guy gave it to me for free - I stumbled into a collection of ww1 stuff that way and a weird rifle 'the ross rifle' was called 'the canuk killer' because it jammed every time it was fired
Matthew McCauley One guy blows a whistle, everyone gets out of their trench and runs forward. Rinse, repeat. Dressing as Bozo the Clown would likely have gotten you shot just as fast as something that blended in.
Hello from Kansas City, home to the National WWI Museum and Memorial! we actually have a Tanksgewher rifle in one of the displays at the museum. Like Indy says, it's basically a Mauser on steroids, but it set the standard for anti-tank rifles up to and during the early part of the Second World War. By then the armor technology surpassed ballistics and the armies began using shaped charge projectiles like the Bazooka and Panzerfaust.
Hi Indy. Did you also travel to "Museo della Grande Guerra" in Gorizia/Gorizio ? I was there a few years ago. A nice museum about Italy during WW1, special about the Gorizio/Isonzo river area.
...More impractical then a Lebel..Damn I'd rather charge German lines on horseback armed with only a saber and a pistol then trust that piece of crap in any combat situation.
The Lebel was an extremely reliable and durable weapon that was more than up to the task for the first 8 shots. Reloading was a pain and its cartridge was sub-par for the era, but not for the relatively short ranges of WWI.
Why didn't they keep going with the Hellriegel? Is it because most of the soldiers weren't level 10 assault back then?
ButtCancer lol burn
yea, its hard to become a lvl 10 assault cuz you cant respawn.. you have to be very lucky to be one..
Mico Ricardo I recently got it, it's pretty effective and accurate for an assault class.
It was way too OP, the French had it nerfed into the ground

Most of the obscure semi autos are already in battlefield one. Because God forbid they force players to use a historically accurate bolt action. 🙄
well, the mg 15 and the T-Gewehr are already in the game, as well as periscope thingy, but no periscope rifle (sadly ^^)
because bolt-action is too boring for the children

RSC-17, Verdun's best weapon. Thank god the game doesn't have jamming.
The closest thing to jamming happens when you try to reload while running, the bolt gets stuck

Absolute awesomeness. Yall(from Texas) have had me from the first watched episode.
Welcome to the show.
Hello fellow texas boi
"Marching over in bright colors and marching into heavy machine guns.....and the lebel rifle". I LAUGHED SO HARD xD
Ay! Forgotten Weapons! Great channel.
Definitely my favorite videos nothing like becoming a weapon nerd.
Love this channel
Love you too.
The drip rifle? One of Australia's best inventions
Villar Perosa. Nothing else.
Since you spoke about France, uniform and gear...
"Fun" fact about the french prototype uniform in "kaki" ( gris-vert réséda modèle 1911 ) :
One of the major supporter of this was the minister of war Maurice Berteaux but his death during a air meeting kinda end this ambitious project. His sucessor said about the old fashion red and blue uniform : " The blind and foolish attachment to the most showy color will have crual consequences. "
However he didn't fight hard to adopt the new uniform.
Why am I laughing at the words "dying more quickly"? Stop it Neidell (^︶^)
well people do die if they are killed
That's only because someone killed them to death.
probably the wrong channel for FSN references
I laughed regardless
finally!
This comment string is amazing.
as a fan of history channel's show Top Shot, i have seen the gun attachment called the corner shot. its interesting to learn that the idea behind that gun dates back 100 years.
I don't understand the hate for the Lebel. It was a good sturdy, if a bit too long, rifle.
One of the best Great War channel's specials :)
Will you gentlemen ever make a trip to the Kansas City, MO WW1 memorial? It's an amazing museum and memorial. I used to go there once a month
It's definitely on the list. But our travel budget is limited.
I just visited it and spent hours exploring it. It's definitely worth a whole day. I love your channel, keep up the great work, Indy!
A small mistake there at 2:36 France, not Prussia
Edit: i get it now. its just a little stuff with words
derp
Indy is correct in saying "to Prussia" for the victory went to Prussia, what you are probably thinking when typing the comment would have meant France won, which is incorrect
"which was a humiliating loss to prussia" he said
EDIT: Oh he means "it was a (france suffered a) loss to prussia". I understood as if "to prussia, it was a loss (prussia suffered a loss)"
that wasn't confusing in one bit
@@abu-hureraali4531 not everyone is english native
You deserve a lot more views. Great series!
+JFGI K thanks
Anyone else looking for guns the Battlefield 1 seems to think are standard issue?
i never knew much about world war one. most of the documentation ive read on it, made me think that a lot of the war was fought with bolt action rifles, beyonets, clubs, heavy mg's, and the like. i played battlefield 1 for the first time, and the amount of automatic weapons in the game confused me heavily. then i found this channel.
How much would you guys pay to have Indy and Ian on the same show?
It’s so interesting how ww1 weaponry and armor was a mix of experimentation and medieval combat.
I have to give Dice credit for using this to their advantage when making battlefront 1
Ross rifle
Fedorov Avtomat
Russian Winchester 1895
Lee-Metford
Krag-jorgensen
M1917 Enfield
Pattern 14 rifle
Brilliant channel and very insightful series. Thank you!
Between you, Othias and Ian, I want sooooooo many old European guns. :)
6:08 - Is the box on the right of the tripod the reservoir for the water-cooled barrel jacket?
six of these are in BF1
I will suggest the M1915 Villar Perosa, which was covered by Forgotten Weapons recently. It was an Italian aircraft mounted machine gun that quickly became obsolete but its actions were eventually converted into submachine guns before war's end. Few unconverted Villar Perosas remain.
What about that french submachine gun with an oddly shaped magazine that was issued to tank crews?
The chauchat?? It wasn't obscure
+Medici Soldier Or a submachinegun.
+TinnedTommy I think they made an smg variant.
+Sir Waffles or at least one was in the works
+Medici Soldier Not Chauchat.
I have one of those periscopes, a junk shop guy gave it to me for free - I stumbled into a collection of ww1 stuff that way
and a weird rifle 'the ross rifle' was called 'the canuk killer' because it jammed every time it was fired
Bruh if the Hellriegel was so rare then how come every assault in BF1 uses it?
The Great War doing so many collabs with the interesting gun design channels.
This pleases me.
Khaki or brown uniforms and semiautomatic rifles would have been great for France at the time.
They sure could have made a difference. But you also need the corresponding tactics.
A happy Tuesday!
+V. Athanasiou to all of you
absolutely love your show
Ian and Rock Islands channel is awesome I've been a long time subscriber to them awesome to see you both working together!
In 2039 there should be a World War 2 channel

oh ok
Hi Indy. Did you also travel to "Museo della Grande Guerra" in Gorizia/Gorizio ? I was there a few years ago. A nice museum about Italy during WW1, special about the Gorizio/Isonzo river area.
cant wait to find some african warlord holding a hellreigel
Great video guys! Keep up the good work.
A lot are in bf1
This summer I went to the National world war one museum in Kansas City, MO. So cool and interesting.
...More impractical then a Lebel..Damn I'd rather charge German lines on horseback armed with only a saber and a pistol then trust that piece of crap in any combat situation.
The Lebel was an extremely reliable and durable weapon that was more than up to the task for the first 8 shots. Reloading was a pain and its cartridge was sub-par for the era, but not for the relatively short ranges of WWI.
It was reliable, it was just bulky, and heavy
Solid video again, Indy. I love the series.
