Just saw a rare performance of this last night by Amy Williams and the JACK Quartet. Fantastic! The Black Mountain College Museum is a very intimate space w fine acoustics. You lose track of time and become immersed in the lulling see-saw rhythms. While in this relaxed, receptive state you start to hear the details. It seems still and repetitious but it's constantly changing, too, like a musical mobile, each small change delivering a surprise. At 82 minutes, everyone I talked to agreed that we were left wanting more, not less.
Heard this last night with the same performers courtesy of New Music on the Point.

It is in a way "dared" to create such an harmonic piece, but the result is great as every new harmonies are stunning.

His music, always so quiet. We can then hear the minute shift of tone in each of his phrases. Not unlike brush strokes in paintings. How that painter just shifted the image so that the observer sees just that. Feldman gives us just these brush strokes of sound passage. I love how his compositions go on and on.

Wonderfull resonances on the piano. The way it stays sounding behind the violins is huge part of that what makes the piece what it is.
Well recorded. Full piano sound, full string quartet sound. Rare.
It's a bit like running a marathon getting through to the end of this work. But the rewards are similar. An amazing composition of pure invention. Spare a thought for the performers, it must be a total nightmare to perform as the concentration levels must be enormous.
There will be days, when I'm full with the common melodies of everyday music, somehow, somewhere this hurt me, so Feldman or Cage music is regenerate or refresh my ear or heart. Sometimes you have to have the unpredictability and disharmony.
Me, too. bored with normal human music. I love to go on the escapades of unusual soundscapes.
Love this piece. It is mesmerizing.

Aujourd'hui, il n'y a pas de progrès dans les arts, ni dans la musique. Il n'y a pas de progrès dans la réalisation ou le sens musical. Il n'y a qu'une extension cumulative des moyens à la disposition des compositeurs réels ou supposés, mais cela n'a pas la moindre influence sur le microcosme artistique. Le modernisme d'après-guerre a rendu les moyens disponibles du "passé tabou" et donc inaccessibles. Ainsi, le progrès d'après-guerre était en fait l'érosion et la restriction, réduisant les moyens disponibles de création... Je remercie dieu de m'avoir inspiré ce texte creux et redondant !!

Каждый отнёс себя к какому то сообществу, группе - а тех, кто не придерживается этих взглядов и идей, осудил как отсталых, нелепых, во вкусах не разбирающихся. Обсуждая других за их выбор имиджа, стиля, направления. Люди забыли, а кто то и не вникал особо в главные постулаты, такие как - О ВКУСАХ НЕ СПОРЯТ! Любой выбор другого человека и есть его личный вкус. Он так видит. Он так оценил. Это его ценность. Для него это дорого. И человек идёт своей дорогой. Но ему начинают мешать. Критиковать. Нападать. Обсуждать. Рекомендовать свои взгляды, которые ему быть может чужды. И ещё и огорчиться на него, что не хочет послушать "дельный совет", записать его в враги. В чёрный список внести. Перестать здороваться, руку дать, общаться! А по сути, что происходит на самом деле, это же капец! Вас невзлюбили или вы невзлюбили конкретно за личный выбор, за вкус! Нужно как можно скорей освободиться от предрассудков и начать жить в своё удовольствие, не мешая другим. Не обесценивая и не огорчая других людей! Пусть и не близких, не родных!!! Morton was the only composer writing rests when everyone else was creating frantic, relentless music. This piece is more than an hour long so you'd better get comfortable and get some snacks.

I had never heard this version before! These images were made for an artist (from Holland?) and the version was another one.
I made the other version you refer to also. That one was deleted by YT for copyright reasons (i used a released recording by the Kronos Quartet for that one). This version of the video is extended as the recording is longer.
I've listened to the Kronos version many many times. Is there any way to purchase this 2013 recording?

Ha, i think you're right, never heard it. I only used this version of the piece because an earlier version was deletend for copyright reasons by YT. Found this one on a reliable site. People there loved it. Nobody heard the doubling :-)

I have discussed this piece with people...there are people who can't hear a thing in it...its boring...its wallpaper...Feldman is not a real composer...I understand that reaction but I love this music...Not that I can explain how or why.

The video? No. It's a random sequence of 6 video fragments, each with a duration of about 10 seconds. The fragments were filmed in an empty room of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. From that film some bits were copied and put back in random places in the film.

I can understand you do not like this static choice of composition BUT, all this music is about silence, tensed harmonies, changes of color. The surprises to me are more on the harmonical point where there are some serious strange things here.

What are you expecting some romantic style violin technique with vibratos and rich dynamics? Get serious this is the 1980s. Anything but that will kill the piece.
