I like some of the meals intended for camping, where you just add hot water. When I lived in a place with frequent power outages, they were really handy to have.
They're meant for backpackers and camping so they actually taste pretty good, since the manufacturers know the food is likely to get eaten instead of betting stored long term for some future catastrophe. (Mountain House is one of the most popular brands, but there are others.)
Short term, the freeze dried items are great, but I wouldn't rely on them for 20 or 30 years. We tried to cycle through our freeze dried camping items in about 3 years or so (most had use by dates much longer).

I have a tip for everyone, remember to check that there is either cranberry juice or lingonberry juice in the pantry, because it works as a good preventive measure against urinary tract infections. I have worked in elderly care and every autumn when the weather starts to cool down, we offer every resident a glass of lingonberry juice in the morning and often it is also offered at dinner. cranberries and lingonberries can also be crushed a little and served with food.

@@annettechoate2647 Research results show that natural products cranberry and lingonberry juice can prevent urinary tract infections. In older women, cranberry juice is as effective as trimethoprim antibiotic prophylaxis. The power of the juices is due to the fact that they prevent the E. coli bacteria from sticking to the bladder wall.

Canned salmon can be mixed up as is to make salmon patties, the bones are soft and mash easily (calcium), the skin is free of scales and contains Omega 3. I add dried onions, parsley, sesame seeds, finely diced celery and/or red bell pepper, 1 egg per can, cracker crumbs and a little evaporated milk. My cats get the broth from the can. Pan fry in olive oil or coconut oil and voila! Tasty and healthy.

Tents, sleeping bags, blankets, Coleman stove, solar oven, ice chests, lanterns...everything. Well, except long term food which I keep inside for temperature control reasons. Gold for a homeless person, I guess. So I was wiped out, which really sucks, BUT! the good news is I have the opportunity to try to buy everything again with the decades of experience and lessons learned to guide my purchases. My “Knock-off” Berkey Water Filter:
Berkey water filters can run between $300-$475
    My “knock-off” cost about $117
    1) Two Stainless stock pots from Walmart $9.00-$46.50 each depending on size. (I think mine cost $9.00 each (8 qt ea))
    2) Spigots (set of 4) $7.99 (Amazon)
    3) Authentic Black Berkey Replacement Filters (2 ea., only needed one, so one is a replacement) $173 / 2 = $86.50 On (Amazon)
    4) Labor $10.00
I tried to drill the required holes (one for the spigot in the bottom pot and one for the filter in the top stock pot) My hand drills wouldn’t go through the stainless steel. I had to go to a machine shop and they drilled the two holes for $10
    Total:
    Authentic Berkey Filters $86.50
    Pots= $18.00
    Spigot $7.99 / 4 =$2.00
    Labor $10.00
    Total $116.50
The only caution is that since it is not an airtight seal between the top and bottom pot, if you overfill, the water will leak out between the top and the bottom.
I tried to post a picture, but it wouldn't upload to comments.

The best purchase was buying the Bluetti AC200MAX and the 2 batteries as our electric company just announced the prime-time use rates. The AC200MAX can also power my fridge and furnace if the power goes out. I love it when my preps can be used in my daily life - those preps are the most useful. Hi Guys.
Great video. Particularly the message "Use what you buy NOW".
All too often I see and hear people complaining about the cost of something, only to find that it's been purchased and then not used.
    Off grid power, for example.
People say it's expensive, or it isn't sufficient to meet their needs.
But if they started with a small system, then used the power generated to off set their current usage, thus saving them money on their current bills, they could expand their system with the money they saved.
    Keep up the good work.

Berkey finally responded publicly - apparently what it boils down to is people purchasing filters from places such as Amazon and Amazon cross docks or stock I forget the term - anyways the filters that are not filtering as they suit claims apparently are not Berkey filters - they are wannabes - Berkey is claiming the filters in question are not coming from verified Berkey resellers

I then had to pay to take it down - plus pay the city for the permit - before paying again to put it back up! #2 remorse was a hand crank generator. Yes it works as advertised, no issues with the quality of the product or the people selling it. But golly it's a lot of work when I could have spent just a little more to get a power bank. a large regret I have was purchasing Camping Water containers for storing water. They may work for a weekend camping but they cannot stack or be placed anywhere in my place easily once filled with water. Would recommend spending extra money for long term water storage containers, even if it is just for camping. They are made better and will not leak on there sides like most of the "camping water containers" do.

Barb, I watched a YT video months ago that showed an easier way to cook M&C. Put the macaroni in a pot cover with water (about 1/2" of water over the top of the macaroni), then add your butter and milk and cook on the stove like that. You do have to stir more often but for me this is easier and faster. I was surprised how well it worked. Damn, I forgot to say put in the sauce/powder packet in it, too. Mix is all together and cook.

When I first started prepping, I knew NOTHING. I watched tons of vids, and I started buying "foreign made" junk...preferring quantity over quality. Consequently, I have what I'll call trinkets like cheap knives, multi-tools, Ferro rods, or cheaply made backpacks, etc. It took a while for me to invest in quality products like the Berkey, but eventually I was able to upgrade to better preps. I wish I'd just done that to begin with because I'd have saved money in the long run and my life could depend on it. I totally recommend to others to get the best quality things they can afford and not make the same mistakes I did. I would like to say though that at the time (C...d) I felt an overwhelming compunction to prepare while I still had time. Hindsight... Thanks for your help in my journey to be better prepared for the uncertainty of the coming days!

I couldn't stand it. Noone in my family could stand it. Just thinking about it now makes me lose my appetite. on top of the taste and texture, I also had a slight allergic reaction to it so couldn't have very much at any given time. I fortunately found a friend that likes the stuff for some inexplicable reason. I gave her all of it, buckets and all.

but that brings up my second prepper remorse, five gallon buckets for long term food storage. I still have like 30 of them. As a single prepper though, I've found they are just too much to lug upstairs into the pantry, or to move, or frankly to even get through in a timely manner. so I end up repackaging a lot of it, which just leads to a waste of oxygen absorbers. I'm in the process now of transitioning to the 2 gallon size. And for things available in it I've started relying really heavily on items from the Home Storage Center or when Amazon has a sale on augason.

Rec’d my Jase Case the other day - very easy to fill out the form. My wife also applied for one. Also have 4 of the Vesta heater / cookers. After assembling and testing one, purchased three more and a good amount of the chafing fuels. Word of caution - make sure you get the 2 free fuels in each box of the Vesta heaters - two of the boxes were missing them and Instafire shipped me the cans upon speaking with their rep.
I haven’t had any issues with my purchases as I had researched them and pretty much rec’d what I expected. I should test out some of the long term storage food but I am hesitant becuase they are for emergencies. The other issue is that let’s say I don’t like one particular or even two of the choices I purchased - that doesn’t mean they are all going to have the same issue - and plus, I can use them for barter. Even Berkey - I know there has been an issue, but my water tastes so much better with the black filters. I used one set for over five years - I could not get them to fail the red dye test.
