Here's my two cents. Our flag can be switched to the red on top in times of war. So, maybe in times of war, we sing the version we've been accustomed to, and in times of peace, we sing Mr. Ayala's version. Well, not everyone will agree with me since this may require a lot of work, but I think it would be nice to have a national anthem for peace and for war.

"Ang mamatay ng dahil sa'yo" is the climax of the song. It give us this adrenaline that whatever it takes, we will do it for our motherland despite what circumstances we have to face. It is the most empowering line in the song. Shedding our blood for this country will always be the best heroism one can do. Also, that line strengthens the other famous line from a song, "may agimat ang dugo ko!". God bless our nation and glory to our motherland! Padayon!

You can either hate his rendition of our national anthem or love it dearly. But we cannot deny the fact that he cares about the song and it's profound message much more than most of us. I know some people who don't even know [or care to know] the complete lyrics of Lupang Hinirang. It is safe to assume that the original rendition will not change for decades to come so let's stop acting all self-righteous and smart for a few minutes and just enjoy the video, for crying out loud.

  • @aionzeta

What I loved about the talk was the way he explained from a musical standpoint how wording/phrasing should be used. It emphasizes the meaning of the song. Even before the subtle change, it was already a great piece of music, recognized around the world as one of the most beautiful national anthems ever composed. Joey Ayala's simple but potent alteration makes it the inspirational piece of music as originally intended.

This is a statement of patriotism.
Instead of revising the lyrics of the song, why not make it as one of history topics sa school, yung paghimay himayin yung phrases ng lupang hinirang para mas namnamin ng bawat estudyante yung pagkanta.

Ang pumatay ng dahil sayo dapat, techinically speaking a struggling country because of foreign repression has no real use of dead people with live enemies. The goal would be is to kill our enemies and make them die for their country instead. Sa boot camp, we are not trained to die and allowed to die unless ofcourse if given the order to do so, but its an overstatement but nonetheless gives us idea of how it's supposed to work. we salute this hymn every monday and friday during garrison and we are always reminded jokingly by our CG here in mindanao to make not do the last lyrics hehe.

On the other hand, I'd rather not change anything in the lyrics but if I would have to it would be the last part and i'd write it as "...ang mamatay nang para sa''yo". The word "para" would highlight the intention and willingness of the Filipino to die for his beloved country.

it was along time since my last music lesson... i reckon this is a creative lecture on musicality keeping with the dynamism of patriotism.
among the many points that he made, what struck me most was his presentation on the last verse on this great song. when the anthem was originally created, to die for the country was what was heroic to do. i believe JOEY AYALA hit it in the eye when he suggests that to be nationalist now means to be positive in all things that matter, citing OFWs' love for country and family drive our kababayans to find better luck overseas, thus the phrase "ang magmahal ng dahil sa iyo"...
There's the bigger possibility, JOEY AYALA's genius shall again be underplayed, unfortunately, by the people in the NCCA for the simple reason that some "nationalists" tend to be really rigid on their rules. Nonetheless, i want to believe that i am among the many who RESPECT AYALA's love for the country and his musical prowess....
i mind though that the audience did not stand while the anthem was sung.... however, i might not have stood up myself if i was in the audience... given the circumstance, i might have forgotten to do so because of awe to what was transpiring onstage....
    simply GREAT!!!

I think his rendition of the National Anthem was an "eye opener" for all of us Filipinos. We sing the National Anthem not knowing its context, its meaning. We tend to ignore these small details because many of us do not know it. That is also one reason why majority tend to suddenly skip a verse, skip a part of the anthem. I definitely agree with him, change the melody, correct the pronunciation. Ending the song with a positive vibe is also a good idea, but then the context of to live and die for the country would then be changed. To think that he had the guts to create a different rendition of the National Anthem was awesome, but to do this in public? Phenomenal. Considering that it is illegal. Goodjob! *damn goosebumps

For me, the last line na " Ang mamatay ng dahil sayo" can mean two things, this just how I interpret the last line. I don't know what the writter originally intended to convey but for me this is what he was saying.
It can mean that handa tayong ibigay ang lahat pati ang ating sariling buhay para sa ating lupang sinilangan, ang pilipinas. And what I mean by "buhay" is hindi lang literal na buhay kundi yung ating life style we can change our life style para sa interest ng buong pilipinas. By changing the bad practices.
And the second interpretation is for the people who are willing to sell our independence, our very own country in exchange for their own interest.

Sure, the latter suggestion is cute but the original words preserve the sacredness and essence as to why the hymn was written in the first place.
Kudos to this talk for reminding everyone the respect the National Anthem ought to deserve. (May TED pala sa Pilipinas. Nice!) But in my humble opinion, the original final lines were just fine.

I prefer the "ang mamatay nang dahil sa'yo" too. This death doesn't really have to be physical or in the literal sense, but to die in one's selfish interests. Forget oneself and live for the Philippines. Yes, that could also be "Ang magmahal nang dahil sa'yo" because to love is to fight for what is true and right, which is to preserve the country's interests. However, it just doesn't fit the line it succeeded: Aming ligaya na 'pag may mang-aapi...

Noong World War 2, within a few days, bagsak na agad yung mga colonies ng ex-super power na Great Britain.
Nagtakbuhan yung ilang nationalities against the onslaught of overwhelming Chinese forces pero yung mga ninuno natin, they held their ground.
Kung papalitan natin yung 'mamatay' ng 'magmahal' a positive trait that we Filipinos are known for (a tenacious fighting heart) will be replaced with a negative trait: cowardice.
Dying for your country to preserve its freedom has always been positive versus loving your country's enemy and collaborating with its invaders.
I think Mr. Ayala's message through his rendition of our National Anthem has a deeper meaning.

Para sa'kin ha..mali ang pagkakaintindi natin ng last na "ang mamatay ng dahil sa'yo" guys pinuputol kasi natin, kung maalala natin halos lahat kun di man lahat na mga national anthem ay nagpapakita ng loyalty, courage, at love sa kanilang country, example sa US "the land of the free and the home of the brave. sa South korea may lyrics na "With this spirit and this mind, give all loyalty, in suffering or in joy, love the country." Example: "Maligaya akong tanggapin ang hamon mo."

    • @angryface7135

Actually its "Aming Ligaya NA pag may mang-aapi. However, the song does give a pessimistic feel, as if the only way to find elation during invaders is to die. The song tells the cultural environment during the revolutionary days, where being a patriot is a death sentence.
in the original Spanishm the last two lines go like this.
"Es una gloria para tus hijos,
Cuando de ofenden, por ti morir."
It is a glory for your children,
when offended, to die for you.
Personally the English version of the Anthem is much more positive.
"Oh, never shall its shining fields
      Be dimmed by tyrants might."
Which is the real intent of the anthem, that no tyrant shall dim the light coming from this "Chosen Land."

Luminaw bigla.

gilbert paulo Pagapang tama po kayo sa pagexplain pero why it has to be those martyr words that could have martyr script influence. Why can't they be positive inspiring words like those examples you gave. Kayla karamihan sa atin ay mag martyr. Young people are studying to be domestic helpers because they believe and proud to be called heroes. Yes they are heroes but it seems to me Filipinos are convinced that to be heroes is to be martyrs than being innovative. Just being confident and strong discouraged ka agad to be called arrogante. I know not all Filipinos think this way but too many of them do that it seemed to me that it became part of our culture.

I totally agree with Rob' Ramos. The National Anthem was made based on our history as a nation and it will not and must not be revised just to fit in with the new generation. I believe Joey Ayala has the best intention at heart, but he doesn't seem to remember why it was made that way, the music and the lyrics... if the new generation today doesn't understand the lyrics of the song and why it was sang that way, then they must do their research and review their Philippine history.

I believe the changes he wants to impart on the National Anthem is of good intention; the changes doesn't necessarily mean changing the past or the history itself. It just so happen that patriotism nowadays demands a different way of showing it. Somehow following the norms and tradition could limit our potentials. I am speaking in behalf of the millennials and I am speaking in general terms. As our country is coping up with the changes, there are matters we need to develop as well.
Change is good. And change again, doesn't mean forgetting the past.

    a. The suggestions regarding phrasings are spot on.
    b. The suggestion regarding "magmahal" over "mamatay" is shallow. This song is about love of country (lupang hinirang), the country's love for its people ( bayang magiliw), love of independence (paglayang minamahal), victory in war (kislap ng watawat mo'y tagumpay na nagniningning), unceasing yearning for freedom ( araw niya... di magdidilim), the joyful willingness to fight (aming ligaya...) the oppressor and crushers of our dreams (pag may mang-aapi) because the Filipino is brave (duyan ka ng magiting).
    c. To "Sharon-ize" and "bading-ize" a classic is to render it meaningless. If we want a national anthem to which we can group hug, I suggest we change our anthem to 'Kumbaya."

I appreciate the life given by Joey Ayala on our National anthem and he has a carefree spirit concept on the changing of the beat, on how words should have been spoken and even changing one word at the end of the anthem itself. Although I appreciate this bold effort I feel uneasy with how he termed the Filipinos as soft for a marching song and thus "Magmahal" seems suitable to us than "Mamatay". This one word though is what makes us Filipinos- willing to die for a cause... Dying to us is the ultimate form of loving- that is what Lapu-lapu, Rizal up to Ninoy showed us. Hugs are OK but we'd rather hug our loved ones and take the bullet and harm that may come to them to the point of dying... Joey's depiction and understanding of the Filipino Martial Arts is even offending for me as a Filipino Martial Artist, clearly showing that he does not know our martial creed. The entire Martial arts community in the world looks upon the Filipino art of Arnis/Eskrima/Kali as a practical, very confrontational, and very combative art in most aspects. Europe and most of the Western world knows and acknowledge that, most Filipinos are unaware. I don't know what Martial arts he is referring to, but what he showed thru actions/depictions is definitely not FMA (Filipino Martial Arts). Again, my respects to a good singer and talented songwriter but please give due credit to the Bravery of our heritage both in a lyric and in our arts... Pugay!

    • @zenestra_1819
      @zenestra_1819 11 лет назад +2

I agree with you with regard to his remark on martial arts. By the gesture he made, I think he was describing Tai Chi. I have no issues about "lahat tayo bading." I don't care how other people describe Tai Chi (it's been described by a Westerner as being like ballet in a Bruce Lee interview). It's just that Tai Chi is not ours. Obviously, Joey Ayala is not very familiar with Filipino martial arts, which are, as you've said correctly, confrontational and combative. Or maybe he is, but thought that Tai Chi is also Pinoy martial arts. If this is the case, I think Ayala's reference to Tai Chi as our type of martial arts is coming from his belief that we are a loving, romantic, sentimental people. Hence, the change from "mamatay" to "magmahal." And this is in no way condescending.

***** Yes Paul, the power and meaning of every song depends on personal interpretations, and thus is subjective in nature, but the tone and objective translation of the words and totality of it depends on the genre from which it was written. The music was composed in 1898 by Julián Felipe, and the lyrics were adapted from the Spanish poem Filipinas, written by José Palma in 1899. Originally written as incidental music, it did not have lyrics when it was adopted as the anthem of the revolutionary First Philippine Republic and subsequently played during the proclamation of Philippine independence on June 12, 1898

phisofide Hi, that's true, the actions show Tai-chi, and whether Joey knows FMA (Filipino Martial Arts) or not and however he interprets the Filipino heart is his right to interpret, but as an FMA Guro I simply want to correct our martial arts that is less understood by most. Not giving its due will simply further cloud its true meaning ...

No need to change how the National Anthem must be sung or to change the lyrics. Joey Ayala must have a point but he will never understand the core of every word put into this song to fit into the whole history of the Philippines or the feeling they felt. If the words of our National Anthem is taken literally, then one must give a bias interpretation. Let's respect the people behind this song and do not use the National Anthem for personal gain. What we can do now is to tell our children what the song is all about so they will know the real meaning and they will sing it by heart.

I agree with what this person has done....The fact that the way we sing our national anthem seems like we're marching to death...Life today is not the same during world war 1 & 2 and during Spanish times. Maybe we should move on in life and look forward to a brighter and calmer future.
I also believe that our current way of singing this song and also some parts of the lyrics have some psychological effect on us especially to young Filipinos.

As a member of a choral ensemble, we were taught that in singing, the words should be sung and enunciated the way we would say them as if we are speaking normally; no other than the world renowned Philippine Madrigal Singers express songs in this way. Joey Ayala has done that, and it is much clearer. It's just sad that no one is allowed by law to express the national anthem that deviates from its prescribed, nay, mandated way of singing to the letter. Since music is all about expression which conveys a message, the freedom to express this beautiful song is restricted. Perhaps it is time to review the law.
