Disappointing Hornby NRM 2-BIL EMU

- Got this second hand Hornby 2 car train pack from a recent exhibition. This is a National Railway Museum model and therefore should be a premium model at a, presumably, premium price. Does it live up to expectations?
This is model R3259 BR 2-BIL "2090" EMU first released in 2013.

Yes, the lack of lights is really disappointing. I have a standard Hornby 2-BIL and two of the 2-HAL units and none have lights. These models resulted from the much-criticised 'design-clever' production process (to reduce costs) around 2013 and the lack of lighting was likely to keep the price down. However, £75 was a good price, these models capture the real thing well and as said below, adding your own lights would enhance them a lot.

I don't understand why it says on the box power/dummy cars. 2 BILs like 2 EPBs 2 HAPs etc. only had one motor coach as the other car is just a trailer.
I have three 2-BIL’s, all run very well, and I didn’t want lights as the price could be £20.00 more for that extra detail. At some point in the future, I will fit my own lighting and passengers in the interior.
Recent price announcements from Hornby have put a halt on new purchases for me, and other manufacturers will probably have to go the same way shortly.
At £75.00 secondhand you got a bargain, as it looked almost mint, good buy.
Yes, anything new is off limits unless heavily discounted. Train fairs are the way!
Even a late 50s/early 60s Triang emu has a headcode light.

Yes. I had a couple of these, the R156 was a non-prototypical EMU (57 foot). It was produced by Triang from about 1956 to the early 1960s, chalk and cheese when compared to the newer version here, it did have a bulb behind the stencil headboard highlighting V for Victoria, again as afar as I can tell non-typical.

In this second hand market 75 quid is a steal Sir. Also nice tram and those low slung red wagons looked nice
I thought it was cheap enough too. That trader had a load of different EMU/DMUs, mainly Bachmann, up for sale this time. All around the same price. I needed more money! Those wagons are Accurascale and the tram Rapido - all train fair purchases at one time or another.
I have two x 2BIL, and 2 x 2HAL all in Green, that operate on my very large exhibition layout, and I have no complaints about these models operationally. Indeed the motor mechanism is hugely overpowered for such a model, and I have replaced the mechanisms in two of these units, with a non powered bogie. These mechanisms can happily haul up to a further 8 non powered coaches even up a 1 in 100 gradient. Hence I have two spare complete motor bogies if ever they are needed.
Of course being pre BR (Southern Railway Maunsell designed) 1930's 660v DC Electric Multiple units, NO train before about 1985 had any type of built in tail light or headlight. Indeed even the Southern Regions twin red tail shades (red indicator blinds) were BANNED on other regions until around 1985. So the 2BIL and other EMU's of this era had a WHITE (not black as on the model) Headcode opaque glass Headcode panel between the cab windows. Over which was clipped a metal frame, with one or two numerals clipped to the frame to give a numeric Headcode indicating route, & even stopping patterns. Further an additional white bar could be displayed above the numeric headcode to indicate the train was ECS (Empty Coaching Stock). On your BR Blue model this area has been painted yellow, because Hornby & Co copy the mistakes found on NRM and preserved railway trains !!! On the rear had to be manually hung a steam loco era oil tail lamp with red lense, on one of the lamp brackets provided.
It's always best to obtain Railway reference books, covering the subject, and there are a number of well known photographic books of SR EMU's from their introduction. Beginning with the first (LBSCR) EMU's in 1909, right up to the demise of slam door stock around 2004, by authors such as Kevin Robertson. Further there is also the Southern Email Group website, with tons of info about everything Southern.

@@fairweathertrains3029 Your welcome. Preserved railway bookshops such as the West Somerset Railway & Severn Valley Railway often have a good selection of Railway reference books. As do PECO at their shop at Beer Seaton Devon. As such books are often only published once, there are many specialist "Second hand" Transport book dealers. A number of whom take small adverts in PECO's "Railway Modeller" magazine every month !!!
The coupling you commented on looks like a Kadee. (You could swap them for NEM tension lock couplings easily enough, if that is what you prefer.) The Kadees would have been fitted by a previous owner. Kadees for NEM pockets usually cost something close to £5 for a packet of 4.

Ive got the 2 Hal in Blue and yep it hasnt lights but got it brand new for just over 100 and am happy with it.
Yes, that was the only real complaint. Otherwise, I am happy with it, especially for the price.
I fitted internal lights on these, I think that they would look better with some weathering.

I got an old triang railways short 2 bill look a like it got a light on end . I have a 2 bill and 2 Hal there ok by the triang one although 2nd motor runs brilliantly. and is about 50 years old 2nd moter about 30 years old
I found it to be a relatively cheap model that runs well and a characterful prototype. Bachmann DMU/EMUs cost significantly more so I can live with no lights. Comparing £150 with £250 discounted or £300 new. You need to pay more to meet your expectations.
Fair enough observation. I just assumed it just would have lighting of some sort.
All the NRM models are the standard models but renumbered to the ones they have in the national collection, with different box artwork, that’s it. I’m not sure how many lights the real things had, but they were fitted with paraffin head lamps and tail lamps. It’s an older model and look at what you got for £75. It’s a beautiful model. Runs beautifully and I have one in green. Interior lights, over rated, generally you can’t even see them during day in real life especially as they are low wattage tungsten filament lamps.
so to me you are whinging for the sake of whinging, looking for a reason to say it’s bad. I’d change the title to the video to what a great model for the price
The only moan I had was no lights. It is a good model, not quite up to Bachmann multiple units, does run lovely and looks good. These type of units benefit greatly from lights and it was disappointing that there was none. Hornby have lagged behind other manufacturers in terms of lighting for a good while. Thanks for watching.

I couldn't either so I turned up my volume from 12 to 36 but you are right the volume is much lower than most which is awkward if you are engaged in painting, gluing or cooking.

Hi, very good review, Hornby would delete lights on all models if they could get away with like they were back in the 80’s & 90’s, basically Railroad standard which a lot of modellers like, no lights no pcb’s limited detailing and not so great motors is not the way to go when some models have more detailing than the space shuttle these days, I like all the bells and whistles on my models because the real things have them, Bachmann have what will possibly be the best factory class 08 on the market to date, the only let down is the price tag in my opinion, thanks for sharing.
