Fantastic description of how to disassemble. Although, I did go one step further and remove the filter under the filter you removed. The part the pipe goes into comes out and it was NASTY. I used dawn dish soap to clean the white filter. Make sure you get all the soap out or you’ll have a mess of bubbles in your kitchen next cycle. :)
Yep. Glad I read the comments, cause it was bad. I got most of it out but there was a little left in the tube after. Flushed with vinegar and baking soda, hope it's clean enough.
Thanks so much for the disassembly info. This was more complicated than my last dishwasher, clearly to get the repair person out. For the "replaceable" filter, we just used a dish scrub brush, dish soap and the faucet spray feature. The dish soap helped release the old oils that make the gunk cling to the filter cloth. The scrubber loosened the sludge, and the sprayer released it so it would come out of the tube opening. Took 5 or so rounds/10 minutes. Hope this helps someone else so they don't have to order an unnecessary part.
You saved me a big headache! Mine was washing horribly, and it was because both my filters were dirty. I also took the washer arms out and sprayed them with my sink hose and shower hose, and a lot came out of those, too. Thanks again! Very easy to follow!
We use an Affresh tablet once a month and after 6 years, filter is still almost like new, so no need to clean. We are also using RinseAid, with the Finish soap pellets that our installer recommended.
Thank you for this video. I cleaned ours for the first time since purchase June 2018. The manual doesn't even mention cleaning the filter. The extended warranty ran out 6-30-2023. It was full of greasy mushy paper from washing jars before removing the paper label. The screen that you attempted to open I let sit in the sink with Dawn dishwashing detergent and ammonia. It seemed to clean the layer of grease inside. And the heavy layer of grease on the underside. All parts were greasy, and I washed them in the Dawn and ammonia. The basket thing that sat in the very center came apart into two pieces with the one also two pieces but still attached that swing apart. Having it separated helped to clean out the greasy paper sludge. No wonder the clear plasticware was filmy. I'm running it now with the few dirty dishes that was in the DW with a 1/3 tsp of Dawn and a cup of vinegar on a quick cycle. I checked several times to make sure it wasn't sudsing out of control. No suds. The only difficulty I have in cleaning our dishwashers is that I am short and my arms just reach to the back of the washer to get the piping off. I have very little leverage.
Thanks for the video, it helped us get started to clean it. At 2:35, in the little area, there are two plastic pieces that lift out easily, and the bottom one had a lot of gunk underneath. It exposes a well, probably where the sump is, that is about 3 inches deep. My opinion is that the filter is an assembly that can be replaced, but I doubt the filter will come off, I tried prying ours too.
I don't know if I found the area you guys are talking about. I pulled the filter out easily, it came apart in two pieces and it definitely needed cleaning. But I am not sure what you guys are talking about. The hole where the filter drops into?
Good video, thank you. HOWEVER... You did not show checking under the round cap piece in the middle'ish. THAT'S where all the nasty is!!! That was absolutely the WORST part of this whole cleaning experience. I hope you've cleaned in there as well! Be sure to check next time... RIGHT NOW... if you haven't cleaned there previously.
Thanks for the clear and simple instructions. Soaked vinegar paper towels on the mesh screen. Let it set, then scrubbed with a toothbrush and hot water. Came clean. Cleaned out the second filter (yuck) assembled back together. It's now running a dishwasher cleaner solution. Can't wait for clean dishes again
Hey Everyone I left out the best part. When you get everything out there is a plastic that is a Semi Filter in the drain part. Pull that straight up and you will find alot of junk in there.
I took apart the drain pieces too put it back together now not draining thinking I put something back together incorrectly. Just needed a few more steps. At least I know I got this part correct. Thanks
Angeline Pennell is correct. Mine was completely clogged with soap residue. There's an odd looking cover that will pop off. Then a part with a lot of slots. It will lift off too... just wiggle while pulling up. Then you have access to the entire catch basin. Everything was covered in dried dish soap.
you forgot to remove the third filter. I found it by mistake and it turned out to be the most filthy and clogged of them all. It's in where the hole is when removing the second filter.
Yes Do lift up and out that plastic puck you see at 2:35. There will be tons of grease in there and you really want to get that crap out. ALSO when you pull it out what is left is the plastic spindle that holds the puck. That spindle also comes out with a quarter turn and pops right out. NOW you can get deep into the bottom of that well and remove grease, broken glass and other unknown particles. This video is great as far as it goes but please go the extra step. ALSO I had a devil of a time getting my stainless snap ring back on the top of the assembly. What happened was the little tabs pulled ever so slightly larger when I removed it. So a very gentle needle nose just to snug those tabs very slightly allowed my shiny ring to snap and hold. This is a great way to say the $175 service call!!!
I found this after looking for it From the manual MODEL:MDB8989SHZ Filtration System Your dishwasher has the latest technology in dishwasher filtration. The Clean Water Wash system continuously removes food particles from the wash water for excellent performance. Plus, there is no need to ever remove and clean the filter.
you would be suprised after 6 months my dishwasher wouldnt wash the cups at top but there is good water flow and heat i took the filter off and cleaned boom the problem was fixed
Thanks for an easy, wonderful video! I just took mine out and was able to clean it. (10 minutes tops) I used crud cutter and a tooth brush. After some soaking and then scrubbing, the junk came off and my screen is nice and clean! Thanks again!
After my son and I took the filter out I started cleaning the inside. I realize there were two plastic pieces (the right side if you face them that unsnapped easily. They were full of crude, and after cleaning snapped easily back in place. Thank you for the tutorial it was helpful.
Thank you for this video! Mine really needed cleaning. Mine was gunked up with labels (I wash jars prior to donating and they come off sometimes). Also had a few sharp chips of ceramic plates and a rubberband in it. I scrubbed the filter on the ring with hot water and a fine brush, used dawn and goo gone, it helped somewhat. That should be removable to clean! Mine was much worse than yours. I will be removing labels from now on prior to placing jars in there. I didn't see you remove the plastic drain from the very top from the clips so the whole part would come out. In my model, it was necessary to get the leverage to pull the tube end at the bottom. It was the most difficult clip for sure. Thanks again for a great video, your close filming really helps and also putting it back together. In Gratitude.
You can get the micro screen off, but careful prying up away from the base is required. It pressure fits into a grove with a gasket that can be damaged if you pry down. I got mine off no issue going slow as cleaning wasn't helping. If you are going to order a new part might as well try prying it off. Keep the second part to make cleaning next time and easy swap.
Right at 2:34/35 when you said "this little area", that whole thing you're looking at pulls out of the hole it's set in and there's a ton of junk under there!!
Thank you for the video. I found a good way to clean the micro mesh screen. May seem like an overkill, but it saves $$ vs buying a new lower screen. I used my pressure washer on LOW pressure. It worked perfectly. I tried hot water, dawn, etc to no avail.
I knew there was a way to take out the parts but the gray piece popped loose and I could not get it to seat right. Your video was the best explanation of how to take it apart and putting it back together again. Thank you!
You saved me ! I started taking it apart to clean it but couldn’t figure out how to put it back together lol you saved the day and saved me some pride … great video, thanks bud
This video is a life saver thank you!. I was able to clean the filter thing by rinsing it multiple times in a grease cutting soap, along with vinegar and boiling water. Mine was super super grimy, and it took a long time and many changes of water, but it finally came mostly clean. I also found some long pipe cleaners (chenille stems) and wove some together to be long enough to work some of the grime out that way. I have yet to figure out how to get the metal top back on though. The tabs line up, but they don't snap in.
Thanks for the video. The sad part of Maytag and probably most other brands is the lack of instructions in the manual for this cleaning and the fact that the parts are made so cheaply as well as no way to clean the filter effectively.
Really helped me a lot. Many thanks for doing this and saving me a lot of money and time without a dishwasher. Had no trouble power -washing and thus reusing the filter. By the way, I think if you've already mentioned the other big round filter to the bottom right. That was also pretty bad.
Awesome video! I found to clean the inside of the filter is to use your garden house with the stream sprayer. It got 85% of the gunk out for me. I hope that helps anyone else trying to clean the inside screen.
Cleaning a dishwasher filter has always been a simple task since I was a kid. You just swung the arm out the way and pulled the baskets. This thing is a giant pain in the ass, hence, here I am watching a video on how to clean a filter. So frustrating.
I have the same dishwasher and i HATE it!! Always having to wash my dishes even after a cycle because the little food particles... and seeing hiw you cant really clean the filter like other models makes me even more mad.
Thank you sir I often have to tackle these projects in the middle of the night when the wife decides let’s tear an appliance apart you save me a half an hour worth of guess work I do indeed wish that that little knit screen could be taken off and cleaned typical engineers screw the consumer
Thanks so much!! I couldn't have done it without you (sending $). I also took the one underneath that, and it's a total science project. I ordered a new top filter and wheels, and my baby will be perfect again!!
The white half-moon filter in the bottom can be removed with a bit of work. It's held in place with a simple groove/snap system like a cheap plastic container, however, it's *glued* into that. 5 minutes with a butter knife and being careful not to crack anything and it came off. Now it snaps back in place as expected but can be removed with just my fingers and not a tool. The flat fill valve on the front-right is removable. It has a snap thing on the bottom of a stem in the middle. Pull lightly to pull it up, then a little firmer until it snaps out of place. There will be a small circle at the end of the stem where it locks into place. I had so much gunk under that I gagged, but I believed it was non-removeable. This system is possibly the worst design I've ever seen. Cheers!
Thank you so much! I have never cleaned my dishwasher before but had some bad smells coming from it. Followed right along and had it done in a snap. Awesome video!!
Thank you! You just helped me succeed in cleaning out my 2014 Maytag dishwasher's wash arms, filter, and disposer catch grate (which was grossly jammed).
Thanks for this! I could find nothing about removing the upper rack with THESE kind of clips. Mine has no push-the-botton-and twist mechanism. I can now find what/where that weird smell was coming from. Blech...I need to make this a six month recurring maintenance thing.
A big problem with these units is the food chopper in the pump assembly. The blade will start wearing through the screen, catch, and eventually the nut will pop off the shaft, and with it the blade. Food will accumulate on the screen and cause low pressure, which will make your sprayers not work properly, and not clean the dishes. It's a pain to replace, because it's on the bottom of the dishwasher. You have to flip it over or lay it on it's side to replace it.
Thank you so much. I've been meaning to do this for a long time but never could figure it out. We rinse our dishes so I guess that's why there wasn't much to do when I got in there. What a stupid design for diy.
Thanks for the video. Super helpful. My filter was full of gunk and like you said it doesn't come apart. I did manage to get it mostly clean by spaying it with my garden hose with a jet nozzle. Great video thanks again 👍
I absolutely hate my Maytag dishwasher and cannot wait for it to quit working!!! This is the worst filter design ever!!! I had an appliance tech fix something else on my dishwasher and asked him the best way to get the filter out for cleaning and he pointed to himself! I can get it out just fine but I don’t see a little old lady doing this maintenance on her own. Big L for Maytag on this design.
There is another filter below that big round piece he called the filter. The one under that is what needs to be cleaned the most. It collects a lot of gunk, broken glass and other debris.
If I’m correct you can’t inspect the chopper on this machine.. my chopper is a bit “whiny “ and I wanted to see if it was clean and clear.. I believe you have to remove the dishwasher from the cabinet, and disassemble motor/chopper from bottom. Is this correct?
The video starts out great, but there is more pieces that simply come apart with no tools needed and reveal food traps that get real nasty just before the circulating pump. That part was missed on this video and should be checked if your already this far into it! As the top screen is just a pre screen. Very simple procedure but again was not shown here on this video.
Thanks very useful! Just knocked it out. Not surprised that the filter (accumulator assembly) costs $60-65 + Shipping. Maytag knows it's a replaceable part so they hit you in the wallet.
I cleaned all of this including the food trap. That was filthy. The dishes on the upper rack still were not cleaning properly. Judging by debris on them, there was insufficient water flow. Assumption was the pump was faulty. I replaced the entire lower assembly as it was close to the cost of the pump alone. Glad i did. Once i had the new assembly in place, i dismantled the old. The culprit? Not the pump. A failed and blocked food chopper unit. This effectively cut the flow of water to the pump. This is a design issue however, as you must remove the pump to access the food chopper unit. And to remove the pump, you have to uninstall and flip the dishwasher!😠
Gearmo Auto what problems are you having? I just got the newer version of this base model Maytag. I love it so far but wish they kept the countdown display timer.
Thanks for the video. Can you tell me what the round grey plastic piece (located on bottom front right) is for? I think I broke mine when I pulled it out.
Thanks for the info. I was honestly hoping to find more gunk in the filter than I did, to hopefully explain why this dishwasher never gets anything clean that wasn't well-washed in the first place.
I know this is a day late and a dollar short, but we just cleaned ours for the first time...and there's another area that was clogged full of nastiness...under this filter, there's a round drain assembly. Pop that sucker out and you might find the reason your dishwasher doesn't get things clean. We sure did...🤢🤮
Thank you !!it worked never had one like this it also klugs up with food I would think on sprayers the holes would of been bigger have been tempted a few times to drill out holes larger but probley would not work rite after that ,thanks again!!
GREAT as far as you went. When you took the fine filter out, the part down in that little well should be pulled out too...it is another filter for larger 'stuff' Also, then the little tube that sticks up ... just turn it and pull it out, there will be even more yetchy stuff... To be sure you get the worst of it, I would take the water out of that little well area BEFORE removing that little tube that sticks up...The grated filter will inevitably have stuff that will fall off when you remove it....then just reassemble as you disassembled...PAY attention to how that little tube fits in the well before you remove it, it only goes in one way, much simpler that way...then you do not have to fish around to get it to screw back on (it is only about a quarter or half a turn).
Great tip, I pulled that out and it needed attention too. I think I figured out everything. The circular piece with the screen may be the filter, but the drain below it definitely requires much more cleaning. Thank you.
Awesome video, totally helped, but I have little particles inside the spray arms. I can push them back in, but cannot get them to come out. Tried high pressured water and shop vac. Very frustrating, any advice, thankyou.
Dismantle the arms and poke debris out of holes using a toothpick. Now tape over the holes. Stand the arms on end in a sink. Run water in the center hole on the arm. This will float out the debris in the lower section. Rotate and repeat. I even had loose ball bearings in mine! Had to use a magnet first to get rid of them😄😄😄
Good info but the hardest part about getting to the filter is removing the middle dish rack on a newer maytag dishwasher. Everybody shows the racks already out when they start. My maytag has 10 or 12 clips that have to be pushed or pulled to take out the racks and not even maytags website has instruction on how to remove them.
I you pull out the grey grill after the filter is up you find all the gross stuff that's under filter. You can just pull it out and clean it. Video great tips on disassembling.
It's disassembly. I lost the video where they took out the next 2 parts which some have already mentioned is the truly dirty part. Now I'm having problems getting it all back together & it's 1 am & I'm exhausted & frustrated. Not your fault but I wish that you went that extra step.
Love the video. So I removed that filter plus the plastic filters below as well and I had water still in that bottom part? Anybody direct me onto why that is? Is something plugged/ not working properly?
Help! I have this dishwasher and did all the helpful steps very carefully. Cleaned everything and put Humpty Dumpty back together again. When I attached the bottom spray arm, it is "slightly" dragging against the metal dome. Now when running a cycle it will not spin. It seems when the plastic water source coming down the back is re-attached it is then putting pressure on the back of the plastic piece (the grey round thingy with the mesh screen) causing it is raise up slightly in the front. I have taken all apart and put back together 10 times and is the same. I ran the dishwasher and all is working but the sprayer arm seems to be in the same position when I open the door to peek each time. Some plates in the bottom had specks on them so is not freely spinning. How could this be happening. I KNOW all parts are back in the same position. It is pristine clean now. I am pulling my hair out! Any ideas? Thanks!
clips are pushed to the outside to release. Snaps back in. !!!And he missed that square with the quarter size hole, 2 pieces come out easy and its important you'll see.
Yeah, so now I can't seem to get the big Grey piece that the filter is on to go back in. The front slowly raises up. So when the silver part goes back on, and the spinnie thing drags on it. I've been trying for 20 minutes. I want to just rip it out and not even worry about it. Then again, I like my dish washer
Thanks for the vid. This is clearly not one of the easier dishwashers to maintain. Ours gets pretty heavy use, but I'm unlikely to go through that again once/month.
I have the same problem (Sept. '22) Just took apart, cleaned all (Yuck!) and back together 10 times and cannot get the gray round thing (with mesh filter) down low enough then the plastic water arm pushes it down when you re-attach it and the front raises up about 1/8 inch. Then attach the dome. Then the spray arm slightly rubs the metal dome! The spray arm is not freely spinning in a wash cycle! Plates on bottom have some specks on them. SO FRUSTRATED!

you forgot to remove the third filter. I found it by mistake and it turned out to be the most filthy and clogged of them all. It's in where the hole is when removing the second filter.
Yes it’s true lol
Same here. The third filter is the worst and usually has the large objects including glass.

Thank you for sharing this video! My husband and I just did this. Hoping it gets our dishes cleaner.
The place you said looks clean after you lifted the filter, those plastic pieces come up and dirt and debris gets held in there as well !
I battled with this for about 2 hrs.. your video was so helpful.
Thank you sir I often have to tackle these projects in the middle of the night when the wife decides let’s tear an appliance apart you save me a half an hour worth of guess work
I do indeed wish that that little knit screen could be taken off and cleaned typical engineers screw the consumer
Yah my wife had me tear it apart at night because she seen a tik tok video of someone cleaning a filtee
Thanks so much!! I couldn't have done it without you (sending $). I also took the one underneath that, and it's a total science project. I ordered a new top filter and wheels, and my baby will be perfect again!!
Thank you. I am glad to help you. Thank you for the donation, it helps me very much. Have a great day
On the filter, the 3 wing nuts over the mesh. Loosen the screws and turn them so they are over the mesh and u can clean the mesh underneath
Good video. Hardest part for me was getting the top shelf out. If you go to the end of the video there is a very good shot of the clip.
Big L for Maytag on this design.
totally agree!😢😢😢
There is another filter below that big round piece he called the filter. The one under that is what needs to be cleaned the most. It collects a lot of gunk, broken glass and other debris.
If I’m correct you can’t inspect the chopper on this machine.. my chopper is a bit “whiny “ and I wanted to see if it was clean and clear.. I believe you have to remove the dishwasher from the cabinet, and disassemble motor/chopper from bottom. Is this correct?
The screen doesn’t come off but if you have a water pik it does an awesome job cleaning the white screen
This was so helpful! I was able to take the DW apart and clean it on my own due to your video. Thank you!
Dang I am sorry man. I had to have 2 warranty repairs One for the pump and one for the board. I know your frustrations
Thanks for the video. Now our D.W. filter is all cleaned up
This video saved my mom from destroying our dishwasher.
There’s was another filter below the large circular metal filter you removed.
thank you. Well done. You should work for Maytag...their customer service had no such information.
Thanks. I work for toyota though. I have new problems with this washer though, i might make a new video soon .
I swear I come back to this video twice a year.
Thanks for the info. I was honestly hoping to find more gunk in the filter than I did, to hopefully explain why this dishwasher never gets anything clean that wasn't well-washed in the first place.
Same problem here
Same!
I wanted to see how ti get to the grinding mechanism to see what's grinding. you gave the exact model dishwasher I have.
Thank you! This was very helpful. Why must Maytag make it so difficult to get to the filters?
This is way too much for most customers to deal with.
After market maintenance for the repairmen to stay in business. Or for people to replace when they don't need to.
😮much more difficult then expected. I think I’ll call the the Maytag man.
Thank you! Your explanation was very clear, made it very easy to follow.
Ahhhh, thank you so much. Holy load of disgustingness underneath that filter. Now that I know how to do this I won't let it go so long next time.
Thanks you for the support! Glad to help. Ya mine still needs to be cleaned out every 4-5 months
This will be my last Maytag. Unnecessarily complicated compared to other dishwashers!
This one is actually easier than the last DW we had.
OMG-- thank you, thank you, you thank you!! I didn't have to hire anyone!!
Thanks buddy. Very helpful as I was having trouble getting the filter out. Saved me from breaking some clips. Keep it up!
Thank you so much! This video was extremely helpful!
Thanks for the help with my dishwasher! Appreciate it. 😊
great tutorial - would have been lost without it! thanks!
I’m at 1:32 and I can’t get that off. Push what tabs?! Where?!
Any ideas? Thanks!
Wash with dawn first for grease then Soak it in decalcifying solution in a pan! Good as new!
Excellent video, exactly what I needed to know. Thanks!!
not too bad, good enough that a half idiot like me could figure it out. thank you for the tut.
That little area you wanted clean out has a handle. Lift it out and you will find a pretty gross clogged unit!
Thanks so much. Did not need top rack out or to disconnect the pipe on the back wall.
clips are pushed to the outside to release.
Check out my newer video linked below
Great tutorial very easy to follow. Thanks.
There is another large catch filter underneath the filter shown.
It was the nasty part.
@@jonathanmooneyham8934
How hard is the lower filter to get to? My washer isnt cleaning well anymore and thinking its clogged up
@@bencav599 Not terrible, just follow the video but go one more step and pull that catch filter.
@@jonathanmooneyham8934 thanks
Thanks for the vid. This is clearly not one of the easier dishwashers to maintain. Ours gets pretty heavy use, but I'm unlikely to go through that again once/month.
You missed cleaning underneath the plastic thing under the filter. It just lifts up, but that it the dirtiest part of the washer.
You neglected to tell how to remove the metal ring...because it was already loosened when you recorded the video.
Thank you, have been trying to find a video to show me how to do this. Thanks 🙏🏻
Thank you for the video. It definitely fills a gap in Maytag documentation. Maybe Maytag feels this task is more suited to their service people?
Don't you think you should clean that area at the 2:26 mark? I want to, but mine has chopping blades and I'm not sure where they are!
After disassembly and cleaned the lower spray arm rubs the metal shield slightly when you manually spin it. Is it supposed to be that close?
I have the same problem, did you resolve yours?
@@kathleenapeterson2144 When I manually spin it it does rub a little but I don't think it does when I run it. I've been using it and it seems fine.
Thank you sir. I have the same one and time to clean it.
Thank you! I needed your help!
