My two best friends from the neighborhood and I were so enthralled watching this series when it first aired that we talked our moms into coming up with homemade costumes of the Scarecrow, Hellspite (me), and Curlew for Halloween that year. My mom went to the trouble to dye a pillowcase brown, cut out eye-holes and cover them with patches of old nylons so that I could see out but no one could see my eyes... pretty clever! (Thanks, Mom! Everything I've ever seen Patrick in, he was top-notch and full of class. I think he is very under-appreciated and was one of the best actors of our time.

As an impressionable 10-year old, the Scarecrow was always my favorite of those great historical adventure films that Disney generated in the 50s -60s. It was just excellent!
Spring before last went to a pirate festival. We got there around 2. So many people dressed up in pirate costumes. In the center of the street stood the Scarecrow. I called out, ‘The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh!’ Then I said again and again. I so happy and he was so surprised. Apparently I was the only person who knew what his character actually was. I couldn’t understand that at all. Shoutout to everyone here! It’s was such a wonderful production!

Patrick McGoohan isn't exactly known for sitting down to talk about his work -- especially The Prisoner -- and I figured there has GOT to be more to this interview than wound up in the minidoc. Being Disney, however, I doubt we'll ever see anything more. In fact, I really wish Disney would produce a full-length documentary on the making of Scarecrow, the history of the Doctor Syn character, and the work Disney did to revive the Dymchurch location. Because the full story would be fascinating to hear. But that's probably never going to happen either. When Scarecrow showed up 15 years ago as one of their special edition metal-backed DVDs, I snapped it up right away, and a good thing too. This was what irritated me about Disney: they release these special editions for about a month and a half, and immediately take it off the market. Then, 7 years later, we would get a SPECIAL 2-DVD EDITION!! Did they add anything? Of course not - the extras from the first release were just moved to a second DVD. In fact, when it showed up on blu-ray, Disney took out the movie version. And still no commentary. Freaking Disney. And now, if you want the original DVD on Amazon, you will have to fork out about 200 bucks (I just checked), which is better than it once was since for a long time, the cost was $400! [I paid about $35 back then.] When I first heard the Scarecrow's yell, I figured that had to be specially created and dubbed in (like they did for years with Johnny Weissmuller's Tarzan yell) ... until I heard the exact same yell in the last episode of The Prisoner. That was incredible that McGoohan could do that.

I loved this movie when it was on Disney! Of course, when I was a youngster, I had no idea who Patrick McGoohan was, but I did find out later he had a connection to my family in Ireland! He was born in NYC, but his family later moved back to County Leitrim for at least a time. When I went to Ireland for the first time, my aunt insisted that she knew Patrick and, as a matter of fact, his family lived only a few miles from where my father and his family did. People in the area talked about how Mr. McGoohan never forgot his roots and came back to southeast Leitrim from time to time. When I heard that, my respect for him went sky high! I always regretted that I was never able to ask him about Leitrim and his time there. It would have been an honor to meet him!
RIP McGoohan 🇮🇪🇬🇧🇺🇸 You were ahead of your time , even as Edward Longshanks, the archnemisis of William Wallace in Braveheart (c.1995)and many many more
He played an excellent rival to Mel Gibson. Hard to fathom he could be that wicked given his Disney roles, but that’s what makes him an incredible talent!
Saw it 3 times lately. Don’t remember much when I was a kid and saw it. Got the book too, I’m 72 yrs old now. I love adventure like this movie shows. Great characters. I had been a big fan of Patrick Mcgoohan since th secret agent series.
Saw the first broadcast of this at my great aunt and uncle's house, since they were the only people we knew with a color tv ... McGoohan has riveted me ever since.
Never knew about The Jungle Book connection - I love that! my favorite Disney animated film tied to a memorable Disney live-action! All this plus Patrick M, who I’d’ve watched read the phone book
As Brian Sibley said, “One of the things I love about Disney was his unswerving ability to see a great story,” and Paula Sigman said, “Walt was an amazing storyteller. He could look at a script or historic point and know immediately the best way to handle it,” and Patrick McGoohan says, “Disney was very wise in simplifying the script and not complicating it with an extra dimension.” Where we are today, we don’t see stories told so good at all because we’re in a different dimension and I realized that’s the problem with Hollywood and the company doing additional films without simplifying the adequacy to the moral in making a great film. I shouldn’t be the only one that understands this but that’s why I still study Walt Disney and his legacy and I really want to tell every animator, every executive, and every filmmaker to open the f**k up and know that what they’re doing in remakes, ruining the complications like spoiling before a film is released, and whatever; and just study and re-study more on how people like the way that Walt, The Lumiere Brothers, Georges Melies, F.W. Murnau, Fritz Lang, Max Fleischer, Chuck Jones, Charlie Chaplin, John Ford, David Lean, and others from the Thomas Edison days to the new generation of Lucas, Coppola, Spielberg, De Palma and Scorsese into making a simplified good story no matter how bad or good it may be. That’s why Walt Disney will forever be my inspiration for how good pictures are made. Instantly, I’m a fan of Scarecrow since I first watched it probably when I was a teenager and I’m 24 now. I’m also a fan of the driving music theme that Terry Gilkyson had written because of the first guitar strum it sounded like a train puffing mildly away from the station before speeding up. I don’t know how else to describe it. I wish I were a musical anthologist.
i bought a bootleg of this at a con back in the early 2000's because it was the only way I could get my hands on it. Still love it to this day. Big Patrick fan though.
Watching the Wonderful World of Disney right after Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom was the highlight of my week! I dreamt of becoming both Jim Fowler and Dr. Syn.
Thank you for this! I adored this as a 6 year old thanks to my dad. He bought most of the books directly from a UK book store and I treasure them to this day. One day I hope to complete the set. I still own the kiddie record with the theme song and scarecrow on the cover as well as a book purchased also in the UK about the making of the movie and the "Days of Sin". I often wondered why Disney let this one go and does not show it on its channel as well and not considering a remake not of this irreplaceable move and its actors but as a series based on the books. So many others left out of Disney+ like Toby Tyler, Thomasina, Treasure Island, Pollyanna. Maybe it has to do with royalties the company does not want to shell out for.....very puzzling.
Walt Disney is such a treasure and that will last It’s obvious that lesser souls and ugly people will try do use him to undo his legacy- they never will- they offer nothing but their own pain and chaos- Walt gave us happiness with a passionate love for good. Beautifully told.
You are absolutely correct. These days, many have tried to smear Walt's legacy. ALL LIES. Some of the worst lies are pornographic filth spread by Hollywood weirdos. They never forgave Walt for calling out the commies in Hollywood. I loved The Scarecrow.
I've never seen this before (I'm 76 now ), maybe we didn't see it in England way back when. I loved Patrick MacGoohan (I can still see why) and he did a great job - although I'm thinking that the Scarecrow riding round the countryside was very Lone Rangerish (it was so obvious that the director was used to making Westerns)and with that cackle was a bit over the top - but hey that was then and this is now. I still loved it and just watched it twice 😍🤩🥰
I was like 5/6 and could not follow it like my brother could. I just like the beginning, scared a little, but just had to watch it . I remembered it all my life Thanks for the info
Watched this on TV when it came out. Got the 2008 Collectors Edition DVD set and it was just as good as when I first saw it. I wish the would dig out the tapes from the soundtrack and release it on CD. Only a few tracks are out there on the internet.
@@keepingwaltindisney I believe 3 vocals, short version, slow version, and regular extended version. There is also one track called 'smuglers' or something like that. A highschool buddy of mine was involved with soundtracks and I keep asking him if anyone he knows has found the tapes. Big issue us licensing.
I always thought of it as Haunted Robinhood. When I was a kid that theme song would stay with me the rest of the night. This is is the good stuff Disney used to make.
YES this was a wonderful show & we all fell for Patrick. So many old Disneys that should be on tv today Just show the old Disney shows - as you say this, Greyfriers, Thomasina ( another Patricks ) Johnny Tremaine, all the outdoor animal adventures - there were so many ..... I would LOVE to see them all again & I know kids today would love them This Scarecrow of Romney Marsh was a jewel
Wow, Patrick McGoohan actually commented his experience with the film in an interview. With all he has done, I thought he would just shrug this movie off as just a side note (or insignificant) in his filmography. I've seen this film when it came out and I remember my dad really enjoying it. Ah, the memories.😊

It was a great series in its own right. I liked it and enjoyed it a lot. It kind of reminds you of the Green Hornet as well. A great show and great times. Patrick was a cool actor and prefect choice for the role of the Scarecrow. The cast of actors also became know in the US and the world over by the movies they made. Some I remember from the World War II movies.
McGoohan could have been a huge A list Hollywood actor. Watch him in 'Ice Station Zebra' (1968) and you'll see why he was offered the role of Bond 3 times! He suggested Connery. Danger Man and The Prisoner are sensational. The greatest actor Britain's produced!
Brett Blevins. Wow. I followed his art on batman. He drew very grotesquely unique type of figures. Ive not heard of dr Syn but i like mcgoohan so ill watch this.
A favourite of mine as a kid. So disappointed when the vhs release was the heavily edited "movie" version. So grateful when the full 3-part story was released on dvd several decades later.

I always regretted that I was never able to ask him about Leitrim and his time there. It would have been an honor to meet him!
Watched this last night on RUclips. I loved it !
Loved those Sunday evenings as a child.
As I can remember the family watched this on Uncle Walt's show ever Sunday night - good series all around!
Loved this as a kid. I saw it on TV and on a theatrical release, and I have the theme song in my playlist!
My favorite Disney movie and the subject of one of my best Halloween costumes ever. I still have an old bootleg VHS tape of this movie somewhere.
This and Zorro were 2 of the very best.
Disney on a Sunday night. I loved that show. And Sunday night movies. What a different time that was!
I was ten when I saw this on Wide World of Disney - LOVED IT!!! (still do!)
This is one of my top 2 Disney films.
It's an incredible movie.
I have never watched this movie , it's going on my must watch list !
I loved this as a kid!
RIP McGoohan 🇮🇪🇬🇧🇺🇸
You were ahead of your time , even as Edward Longshanks, the archnemisis of William Wallace in Braveheart (c.1995)and many many more
He played an excellent rival to Mel Gibson. Hard to fathom he could be that wicked given his Disney roles, but that’s what makes him an incredible talent!

correct me if i'm wrong but his voice was so deep that it reminded me of the late George "Shere Khan" Sanders 1906-1972
It is so unfair that this is not available to those who enjoyed this in their childhood.
What a fun brilliant character and show.
Watching the Wonderful World of Disney right after Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom was the highlight of my week!
I dreamt of becoming both Jim Fowler and Dr. Syn.
What wonderful memories of Disney's Scarecrow and Secret Agent Man in 1963-64 right during the musical "British Invasion".
Walt Disney is such a treasure and that will last
It’s obvious that lesser souls and ugly people will try do use him to undo his legacy- they never will- they offer nothing but their own pain and chaos- Walt gave us happiness with a passionate love for good.
I was 11 or 12 when this came out and now I can't wait to show my grandkids.
The horse ride @12:43 is giving me Portmerion beach vibes . 👌
great cast !
I live in Dymchurch, and this weekend the village will celebrate Dr Syn for the bank holiday weekend.
I remember this MOVIE!!!!!!
I was on the edge of my seat
DISNEY on SUNDAY NIGHT
It was a series, right ??????
GREAT HISTORY
You forgot to hit the CAPS LOCK key when you typed “seat” and “series”
Never missed The Wonderful World of Disney growing up in the 1960’s. The Scarecrow mask and outfit was outstandingly scary; but so cool.
I was like 5/6 and could not follow it like my brother could. I just like the beginning, scared a little, but just had to watch it . I remembered it all my life
Thanks for the info
Watched this on TV when it came out. Got the 2008 Collectors Edition DVD set and it was just as good as when I first saw it. I wish the would dig out the tapes from the soundtrack and release it on CD. Only a few tracks are out there on the internet.
Amen to that! A CD release would be something special! As it is there are just recordings of the theme song out there that I know about.
@@keepingwaltindisney I believe 3 vocals, short version, slow version, and regular extended version. There is also one track called 'smuglers' or something like that. A highschool buddy of mine was involved with soundtracks and I keep asking him if
anyone he knows has found the tapes. Big issue us licensing.
I always thought of it as Haunted Robinhood. When I was a kid that theme song would stay with me the rest of the night. This is is the good stuff Disney used to make.
So true, it's sad what Disney has become. What would Walt think?
YES this was a wonderful show & we all fell for Patrick. So many old Disneys that should be on tv today Just show the old Disney shows - as you say this, Greyfriers, Thomasina ( another Patricks ) Johnny Tremaine, all the outdoor animal adventures - there were so many ..... I would LOVE to see them all again & I know kids today would love them This Scarecrow of Romney Marsh was a jewel
At least Greyfriars Bobby is on Disney+! I have no idea why The Three Lives of Thomasina isn’t!
McGoohan's Scarecrow had that menace about him that you just don't find with TV and film versions of Zorro and Batman.
Noble Characters Actors Giving Reality To Films Beyond Disney.
“I will not make any deals with you. I’ve resigned. I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed, or numbered. My life is my own.”
"Is it?"
"Yes, and you won't hold me."
We always watched Walt Disney on Sunday night back in the day
It was a great series in its own right.
Watched this in the globe Putney London , loved it now and then .
Brett Blevins. Wow. I followed his art on batman. He drew very grotesquely unique type of figures. Ive not heard of dr Syn but i like mcgoohan so ill watch this.
Very engaging movie! Just saw it again after decades. Very well made, fun and exciting film.
A favourite of mine as a kid. So disappointed when the vhs release was the heavily edited "movie" version. So grateful when the full 3-part story was released on dvd several decades later.
One of my most favorite shows as a kid in the 60s. Supposedly my English ancestors actually did this😮
