Yea, good for her! Still can't figure out why writers perpetuate her as grumpy. She was totally dissed by the quilt faker! She should have one like everyone else!
As a 70's kid who grew up watching the Waltons for 18 years having an icon like you talk about each episode is just truly amazing! I enjoy each episode and appreciate your time and insight on the show!
You couldn't described it any better; it is amazing that to relive the memories with Judy Norton. Almost as good as joining the Baldwins for a sip of the Recipe! :)
The fact that normally straight laced grandma instigated Olivia’s use of the “recipe” in her frosting was very amusing, as was the scene where grandpa was smelling grandma’s breath in her sleep because he suspected her of secret drinking. It was a delightful departure from the usual glaring looks that one would get from Olivia and grandma whenenever the Baldwins’ “recipe” was even mentioned. Thanks again for sharing all of your behind the scenes knowledge with us Judy!😁😁
Haha...liquor wins again!! Guess Vanilla has a first cousin. Grandpa catches the bottle level like a good inventory manager!! Sweet episode. Viva la Olivia!
I always loved taking my kids to the fair when they were young. My daughter was in a greased pig contest, unfortunately she did not win. But she looked adorable running after that pig with her pigtails behind her!
Love this episode, especially where Mama and the girls are in the garden picking raspberries for Olivia‘a cake , and Oscar remarks that they look like a Beautiful painting. The scenery was truly stunning, like a countryside villa in France.
That was a really cute episode, felt bad for Grandma cuz her qiuilt didn't, get first place! It was quite obvious that Oscar had never quite got over Olivia. Part where Grandpa tries to smell Grandma's breath really gave me a laugh!! Great job Judy!!!
He was so in love with Olivia. John boy seemed uncomfortable with Oscar asking questions about his mother. John boy is marveling over how beautiful his mother looks. Great story line.
I don't know what it is but I have always liked when characters have a bazaar or go to a fair. I think it just has that "down home" small town feeling to it, especially when it is with people like The Walton family. Judy, your videos are always a welcomed excursion into a more pleasant, kinder world, even when addressing serious topics.
Again, thanks so much for these! I didn't get to watch the show when it was originally on, but watched it earlier when a network showed about five episodes a night! Very well-written, very well-acted, very well-done!
The pig, chickens, and cow on the series. Remind me so much of my early childhood growing up in an Amish community. The episodes are so real, and very accurately displayed. Thanks for giving us a peek into the life in time of the Waltons. Jehovah loves you, and so do I.
Judy: Like Olivia did for Mary Ellen in this episode, my mom used to pour vinegar rinses over my oily teenaged-hair in the 70s. It made my hair shiny too!
I laughed hard when Grandma confessed to using The Recipe in the cake, but was surprised when Ester said she thought a man should have some secrets. And loved when Grandpa smelled her breath. Thanks Judy!
Such a lovely episode. The fair was so family and neighborly oriented. Such a fun time for all involved in those days. I absolutely loved the way grandma did not approve of the recipe but in order to help Olivia out she acquiesced and agreed to use it as flavoring. At one time Olivia wouldn't even allow it in the house. I was fascinated with grandpa and his intuition that the recipe was in that icing. Seems that recipe gets ahold of everyone, including Doctor Vance. Just so cool. I always get a family feeling when watching this type of episode. It is also nice to learn a little about things like the guy who played Oscar was once married to Michael. I like to sit back and imagine the good times had back then in those simpler times.
Love the funfair scenes. We used to have a funfair in the seaside resort where we live take up residence for three months of the summer each year and the merry go round was known as chair-o-planes by the owners. As kids we always had fun with our cousin's there. That episode reminds me of the carnival. Lovely behind the scenes video Judy.
I love that Olivia and Grandma are willing to booze up the cake a little for the Prize at the County Fair. What happens in the Kitchen, stays in the Kitchen...ha ha ha! Their integrity stays in tact as we all know by now that the Recipe is now legal. So cool to hear about you kids enjoying a ride after the days shootings were done at the Fair. Art imitating life, and visa versa!
I enjoyed this episode. Thought it was funny that Grandpa would suspect Grandma of nipping the Recipe. I loved how, even though Oscar's life was filled with travel and excitement, Olivia states that she has everything she could possibly want, proving that money doesn't always mean a good life.
Judy, before hair conditioner my Mum use to rinse my long hair in warm water and small amount of apple cider vinegar. It made my hair soft and shiny. This was in the '60 s. ☺️ When I saw this episode it takes the mind back to all these simple remedies.
Happy Monday Judy! This episode made me sad regarding Grandma not winning she spent 3 years on this quilt but I loved how in the end she did prove the other contestant did cheat she couldn't remember what she used in the quilt but Grandma remembered everything including her bloomers lol. Grandpa kills me trying to get a taste of the cake offering to carry the cake to the car and Olivia gets it away from him. I love the episodes where the family gets out and has fun together. I think it's wonderful that Michael and her x husband were able to act together it was such a great episode I knew he was her husband but didn't realize they had already divorced. Thank you Judy!! 💕
I love this episode.I love that it's main setting is a county fair, and I love that it shows berry picking. The Baldwin sisters are a favorite of mine,in a way they remind me of some older ladies I used to know. The show gives me a comforting feeling, and so does your videos.Thank you for that!
Grandma was furious over that quilt. The lady that won clearly didn't know where her stuff came from. Doctor Vance was getting drunk off of the jelly. Such a great moment.
I remember the lighting and how it would be bright at night. It was more noticeable back then, and it was just a thing to us, really. I'm sure we asked why it was that way at some point, and dad probably told us we wouldn't be able to see anything if it was dark- after all, can we see in the dark? Lol! My mom, however, always had the answer and still uses it today, which is, "It's in the script!" Thanks for another great memory. That's the beauty of this channel, it brings back memories of not only the Waltons, but of family, and good times. Talk about a prize.... ❤️❤️❤️
I remember this episode. She was very well spoken about her quilt .and I loved the peacock but later on we never see it again. Hi from Lutz Florida USA
It caught my attention when you said Peter Donat's uncle had won an Oscar. Robert Donat: Best Actor in a Leading Role for "Goodbye Mr. Chips" (1940). And yes, Peter and Michael had a lovely on-screen chemistry in this episode.

Thanks, Judy for another BTS with The Walton's! I enjoyed the Baldwin's recipe being used by Grandma and Olivia in the cake! I remember feeling sorry for the politician who seemed a bit lost. Very handsome and talented actor. The crowd chasing the pig was funny. I love attending our local county fairs. We are in a winter storm right now. About a foot or more of snow fell overnight! Have a good day! 📝📚🎬❤️🎂
Hi Holly I would like to know if your Father or Grandpa was in WW2? Your last name sticks in my mind as my Dad was in the Then T-Patchers and many Italians were in the T-Patchers and my late Mother sent many cards and I agree with you about you said about the show except I sure think that cake would have delicious with the raspberries enjoyed all the people in the different directions and the same and way Oscar found himself with their help!
@@toinimoore3463 That's interesting about the T-Patchers and I would like to learn more. Villella is my married name and yes, my father-in-law served in the Navy! Though I don't know more than that. He had several brothers who served, but I'm not sure of the branches. My mother's father served in the Navy also. And a cousin served in the Airforce. My father's brother served in the Philippines. And a cousin served in The Navy. (Of course, those surnames are different). Villella is a fairly common name in some parts. 🪖☺️🧡🕊️
You were correct about the vinegar rinse. I have a friend who does that. I’d think it’d be kinda harsh for hair but she’s used it her whole life. Another great family time with the Walton’s. I like all the insight you give to the scenes. Take care. Mary
Judy, I have two questions and once again thank you for always responding to comments! 1) Can you do a discussion on lighting. I'm really curious how that works on a show. What type of lights, how hot it gets, etc. 2) I noticed a ton of extras with lots of extra costumes. How much does that raise an episode's budget and how hard is that for a director to coordinate. I can see really long days with those logistics.
The lighting in the bedroom scene (around 4:30) reminded me of our farmhouse in the 1950s. Curtains but no blinds (privacy was not a concern in the wide-open country) meant that the star and moon light shown in our windows and was the only light we needed to move about the house to go to the downstairs bathroom (nightlights were not in use yet, and would have been thought a frivolous waste of electricity).
Watching The Revelation now and when John Boy is asked to sign his book from the piano player (when he takes Daisy to dinner in their usual restaurant) he takes his pen out of his top inside pocket, signs the book and gives the book AND THE PEN to the piano player....
Thanks Judy, such a gift when I see a fresh post from you 🙂 I watched this recently so great to hear your insights. I love the pig story lol and giving more background to Olivia 💖✨💝
Hi Judy again you did an excellent job on behind-the-scenes with the legend. Grandpa Walton reminds me of my dad. My dad would tell stories like Grandpa and you couldn't always tell if they were the truth or he was stretching the truth. I love the part where Grandma went and got some of Grandpa's recipe to add to the frosting for the cake Olivia was making. I was a little surprised that Olivia went ahead and allowed Grandma to put that recipe in with their frosting to take the place of the almond flavor. Before they took the cake off to the fair it look like Grandpa already suspected that that's where some of his recipe went to wanted to carry the cake himself. He didn't say anything when he tasted the frosting to Olivia or to Grandma, but you wonder what would have happened if he had been able to try the frosting before they went to the fair. 😅🤣 When the family arrived at the fair there was a young girl running around that I thought was Mary Ellen, but I don't think she was. This girl looked like Mary Ellen from the back but we never saw her face, her hair was long and the same color, and she wore a brown dress. Was she you/Mary Ellen or your double?
It was fun about the recipe in the frosting. I love that Grandpa never told them he knew. I also saw the girl you mentioned. It was one of our extras and she did look similar from the back.
This has always been one of my favorite episodes. I find myself watching it again and again. Such a pleasant story with so many enjoyable little sub-plots and winning moments. Like when we learn MaryEllen isn't partial to cashews!!! Thanks so much,Judy, for this behind the scenes look at one of my favs!
Thanks so much for watching. It was funny how often the things Mary Ellen said she didn’t like were foods I do enjoy and yet things she liked were not my personal favorites. :)
I decided to watch this episode after listening to your show. I felt so bad for the pig getting chased by all of those people. He must have been so nervous and scared. I hope he was well taken care of.
I love the recipe jam and cake, I liked the quilt, and most people cheat in these events. Many of the same ole people enter into them. my mother use to make quilts. and If you go to certain inns and places in the Great Smoky Mountains they have them on every bed, on the walls as decoration, and for sale. My Mother made me a dutch girl quilt and a crochet bed spread.
Judy thanks for sharing i never knew peter donat had been married to michael learned. Its amazing how well they acted together in this episode they didnt seem akward or anything
Wow, that must be a bit awkward to be acting with your ex-husband but the episode is bittersweet because you wondered if Olivia would have had a easier life with Oscar. Peter Donat still looks like he is love with Olivia in every scene that they play together. I admire Olivia but I don't think I could have raised seven children deep in the heart of Depression. Thanks for sharing your memories of these episodes, all of your fans enjoy each new segment!
Judy (alias Mary Ellen with the wet head) ... you've done it again. Every episode of the Walton's is filled with a richness of meanings that transcends time. We need the Walton's. Thanks Judy for keeping this richness alive. We'll see you again on another episode of "Behind the Scene's with Judy". Aloha from the middle of America.
I did love this episode.Grama was commicle about your hair and Olivia.I love the pig and the peacock. There seemed to be a lot of action in this episode.
I always thought that Grandma went and argued with the judges so much afterwards that she eventually got the prize! l recall where she goes to the other quilt and shows that part of it is coming apart and in another moment she's categorically naming all of the fabrics she had used and where they came from.
I liked John Boys face when Olivia hands over the 5 dollar bill while looking over at Oscar Cockrell. I always wondered why they chose that last name for him. It just sounded strange when Olivia pronounced it. lol
Happy New Year "officially" as it is now January 1st! I loved Ellen Corby in this episode! I didn't remember about the "recipe" in the icing and that Grandma knew about it! And more great tidbits, Judy - like Peter Donat and Michael being exes and technical things that I would never think about - like about keeping your hair wet and having to ride the fair ride again. Your memories never fail to fascinate and amuse me! The fair scenes were quite something for your show - sometimes even when it was a dance or other gathering, there weren't that many people - this had a lot going on! Tender moments between John and Olivia and Olivia and JohnBoy just round out another great episode.🥰
Great episode! I loved it! Along with your segment... made it even better. The Walton cast should get together again and do an adaptation of "State Fair" As always... you're my favorite Judy Norton... Keep the segments coming. They make me smile.
One can see in the process shot behind John Boy and Oscar in the car one side of the screen briefly. The camera man quickly corrects it, but it stayed in the final cut.
In terms of the lighting, I just always presumed it was moonlight through the bedroom windows. As for the fair, when the car goes under the sign and one of the kids taps the sign on the way through, in real life that would have been me. I still do stuff like that today at 59. I'm 5 foot 3, I'll take the high tap where I can get it!
This was a remarkably cute episode. I just love the Baldwin sisters. Being from the Southern blue ridge in South Carolina.... I new several moonshiners that would drive way up to Tennessee to sell it. White lightning.... There is a beautiful waterfall in the S.C. blue ridge called moonshiners falls and that used to be a perfect place to distill but any holler to this day if you follow a stream you just might find some moonshining. And that's for every state in the blue ridge. What a wonderful show, and wonderful characters with awesome dispositions..... I want to also say, Judy your hair looks perfect! You are just so beautiful and don't age. Thank you for these amazing videos.... They totally make my day. Thank you.
I say knew because most that I knew are gone now. I have a friend who does make a delicious shine that tastes like apple pie. But all the other ones have passed. I don't normally talk moonshine..... Especially now that I live in Duluth Minnesota.... But hey your a Walton and when in Rome... 😊 Thanks again.
Thanks Judy❤️ nice description of this episode. I love how Grandma and Mama use some of Grandpa’s whisky in the frosting for the cake 🎂 and Grandpa gets suspicious and he smells Grandma’s breath so funny oh my goodness. That part makes me laugh 😹
Love your channel and I love The Waltons (I have the entire series on DVD) and the insights you give are so fascinating. Much thanks to you and the entire cast for giving us the best TV series ever. Wholesomeness that we so desperately need right now. Keep up the good work ❤️
I did not know that, the actor who played Oscar, the up and coming politician, was the real life ex husband of Michael Learned. Their performance together in this episode, was absolutely, superb. They had great chemistry on screen. I loved everything about this episode. Grandma and her quilt and how she knows every piece that she used to make it to her competitor. Grandpa and his stash of alcohol that he didn't know that grandma knew about, but she does. And subsequently, telling Olivia, what was used in the recipe for her prize winning cake. Then Olivia using her prize money to pay the man for bens pig. Grandpa realizing that his hidden stash had been tampered with. John boy not accepting Oscars offer of help, but he knows it is only because he was Olivia's son. And John boy didn't want his help for that reason. John Senior teasing Olivia about being her being able to have been married to a politician, and her response. The scene with Olivia in the meadow picking strawberries with Mary Ellen and Erin, and Oscar appears and tells them how beautiful they all are. That was a beautiful scene. Oscar, making his speech and John speaking up for him, and Dr Vance and the other two judges, taste testing the jelly, with the Baldwin's papas recipe. Hilarious. By the way, I loved Dr Vance also, he was a great actor on the show as well. John boy and Jason talking about Olivia and before she married John. And how if things were different Oscar Cohrell, could have been their father. The scene when Olivia comes into John boys room and Jason and he are talking, and after Jason leaves, John. Boy tells Olivia how beautiful she is. So sweet to see that interaction between the two of them. The simplicity of this episode was just such a wonderful innocent episode. One of my favorite episodes to watch. Thank you for the BTS. Of the Prize. Love your channel.
@@judynorton2598 let me add also Judy, when Oscar was being introduced to everyone, to all the children, and you had just washed your hair and didn't want to come to meet Oscar but you did, and when you did Oscar says that you were beautiful and you look like Olivia, that was sweet. You and Michael Learned did favor alot.
It is always great fun when the recipe shows up in the most unlikely places. Like everyone has pointed out Grandma was so adamant about not partaking but when it came down to winning all bets were off!!! Which brings me to say how much I loved the Baldwin Sisters...just excellent actresses and a joy to watch...thanks Judy for all the insight and joy you bring to us!!
Love when grandma gets scrappy with a lady about her quilt at the fair.

I’ll see what I can do about answering your questions in an Ask Judy soon. Thanks.
@@douglas_drew Great story. Thanks for sharing!
Watching The Revelation now and when John Boy is asked to sign his book from the piano player (when he takes Daisy to dinner in their usual restaurant) he takes his pen out of his top inside pocket, signs the book and gives the book AND THE PEN to the piano player....
Very cool.
Thanks Judy, such a gift when I see a fresh post from you 🙂 I watched this recently so great to hear your insights. I love the pig story lol and giving more background to Olivia 💖✨💝
Glad you enjoyed it.
Short and sweet your comenteries are so complete.❤😊
Glad you like them!
CUTE outfit!
Thank you.
One of my favorite Grandma quotes: "I have known her since before Garfield was shot! Don't talk to me about that woman!"
So perfect.
YAAAY, JUDY - 50,000 subscribers!!! Congratulations!!!
Thank you. A milestone indeed.
I decided to watch this episode after listening to your show. I felt so bad for the pig getting chased by all of those people. He must have been so nervous and scared. I hope he was well taken care of.
Good question. Not sure how they coordinate all that.
I'm watching The Return right now.
Lovely.
Excellent video Judy! Thanks for sharing. 👍🏻
My pleasure
I love the recipe jam and cake, I liked the quilt, and most people cheat in these events. Many of the same ole people enter into them. my mother use to make quilts. and If you go to certain inns and places in the Great Smoky Mountains they have them on every bed, on the walls as decoration, and for sale. My Mother made me a dutch girl quilt and a crochet bed spread.
So many great creations. I love the community aspect of these small town fairs.
Dr Zance's expression says it all, Steve M Au
It does indeed. Brilliant.
Judy thanks for sharing i never knew peter donat had been married to michael learned. Its amazing how well they acted together in this episode they didnt seem akward or anything
I agree.
Winning a prize is meaningful for the rest of your life
Wow, that must be a bit awkward to be acting with your ex-husband but the episode is bittersweet because you wondered if Olivia would have had a easier life with Oscar. Peter Donat still looks like he is love with Olivia in every scene that they play together. I admire Olivia but I don't think I could have raised seven children deep in the heart of Depression.
Thanks for sharing your memories of these episodes, all of your fans enjoy each new segment!
Glad you enjoyed this
I'm watching the Marathon the one A day of Thanks on Waltons Mountain 1947
Very cool.
Yay! Thanks for watching again!
Im currently goin back through and re-watching all of the seasons....every episode. Thank you for another wonderful video!
My pleasure.
I did love this episode.Grama was commicle about your hair and Olivia.I love the pig and the peacock. There seemed to be a lot of action in this episode.
I agree.
I always thought that Grandma went and argued with the judges so much afterwards that she eventually got the prize! l recall where she goes to the other quilt and shows that part of it is coming apart and in another moment she's categorically naming all of the fabrics she had used and where they came from.
Amazing the amount of work that goes into a quilt.
Another great episode. Thanks for your time and efforts as always.
My pleasure
I liked John Boys face when Olivia hands over the 5 dollar bill while looking over at Oscar Cockrell. I always wondered why they chose that last name for him. It just sounded strange when Olivia pronounced it. lol
No idea how the name was chosen.
Yes - a lot going on, and lots to coordinate! Glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you so much for sharing one of my favorite episodes I enjoy watching and learning about the waltons
So happy to hear that. Thank you.
I just got done watching john boy & Janet's wedding then
Easter I just love playing along with the characters
How fun.
@@judynorton2598 yes very much fun then when I shut off TV I keep playing it in my mind.
Great episode! I loved it! Along with your segment... made it even better. The Walton cast should get together again and do an adaptation of "State Fair" As always... you're my favorite Judy Norton... Keep the segments coming. They make me smile.
Thank you so much.
One can see in the process shot behind John Boy and Oscar in the car one side of the screen briefly. The camera man quickly corrects it, but it stayed in the final cut.
Oh wow - I missed that.
I love that!
Thank you.
How cool - thanks for watching
I say knew because most that I knew are gone now. I have a friend who does make a delicious shine that tastes like apple pie. But all the other ones have passed. I don't normally talk moonshine..... Especially now that I live in Duluth Minnesota.... But hey your a Walton and when in Rome... 😊 Thanks again.
Very entertaining! 😄👍💙
Thank you.
I agree - such cute moments.
Thank you Judy.. learning new things about these episodes ☺ Beautiful Necklace & love your hair! 👩🏼💼
Thank you very much
Another one of my favorites. ☺️📺
Glad you enjoyed it!
Such a fun episode!..I love to hear your commentaries on these shows, love the trivia. Thank you!
Thank you so much.
I'm enjoying the episodes.. I saw the one with the girl and her grandfather in jail.... such a great show!!!
So glad. Thank you.
Another one of my favorite episodes and just to let you know it was almond extract and not almonds for the icing in the cake .
Aha! Thanks.
Thank you for sharing all your lovely thoughts. Glad you enjoyed the episode.
This was a good one
Thank you.
Yes - fun storyline with the recipe.
