My mom is 87 (for real) and she does barbell squats, deadlifts, presses, etc. I have been a professional trainer for almost 45 years (own my own gym and healthy food teaching and food plan kitchen as well) and never in my life would I ever have anyone of any age use a smith machine. It prevents natural planes of motion and biomechanics, leading to chronic injury or worse.Even at weights that are not brought to failure. If anything, but rarely, it can be convenient for shrugs, a short range movement that would not be that corrupted. But chest supported "bench shrugs" of the proper setup are the best way to perform shrugs for 95% of people, especially those with unique physical limitations. But even then, natural free-form biomechanics is always the way. I got the RitFit Smith machine + cage off Amazon and love it. No lat pulldown but it uses linear bearings instead of plastic bushings and came with a lot of stuff like safety spotter arms, weight pegs, etc for $700
I’ve been wondering while eyeing this machine from a far… is there any reason why one couldn’t flip the smith machine around and have it face the back upright? Just trying to see what some customizing options are. Also, ritfit’s rep couldn’t give me an answer but when the smith bar is at the very top in the locked position, how much space is between it and the floor? I’m wondering if I could walk under it? Thanks a bunch!
@@garretthohn I wanted to flip the smith upside down and I asked them the same thing, and they couldn't answer, so I just bought it and did it. I wanted the Smith to be able to go lower for hip thrusts. With the Smith flipped upside down, the highest locked position leaves the Smith machine bar at about 61" but now at the bottom, with the safety arms dropped to the floor (I also removed one of the rubber stoppers since it had 2 stacked on each side) the bar now goes 11" from the ground. Even before flipping the Smith, you couldn't freely walk under it, and I couldn't really do any overhead presses so flipping it increased functionality and didn't reduce any stability or anything. The mini is about 1.5 inches longer but it will change the load i am able put on the smith part of the machine for squats. Hey Coop! I went down the rabbit hole with Smith Machines for a while. I was going to get the Bulletproof VTS but they teased it for so long I eventually gave up. Somehow I lucked into the Black November Eleiko sale - they had their Prestera Smith Attachment marked down to a fifth of the price. They then tried to pull the rug out and say it was a mistake and they could do the attachment without a bar. I eventually got them to throw in the bar for a little bit more. All I can say is that I am supremely happy - the Eleiko Prestera Smith Attachment fits right into my REP PR-5000 rack just behind my Athena Functional Trainer (I’m using an 8-post rack with a 41” deep section for squats and bench, then a 16” section for the smith machine, then a 16” section for the Athena). Not only is it awesome for me, but now the kids, wife, and friends come over non-stop to use my gym (which I did not expect but it’s pretty cool). Everyone loves the combo of the Athena up front and then Eleiko Smith behind.
The price they had listed when they showed prices was $3,700. The Black November price they listed as $700. Then they tried to say it was a mistake and it didn't have a bar. After haggling a while (they wanted to cancel the order and return my money) they wound up selling me the bar for the Smith Attachment for $700. So it wound up being $1,400 total - more than I felt I should have paid due to the situation. However, it fit into my 93' tall Rep PR-5000 perfectly and it is ridiculously nice. So I am very happy with the purchase now. @@QianaMarkham
I purchased this right after the holidays. I have a gym membership, but I wanted something for my home gym that I could lift heavier with at home that is safer than my squat rack. Also, my son has expressed an interest in starting to lift, and I thought this would be ideal for him to start with since he is too shy to go to the gym. I have been happy with it so far. The pulley system is smooth. It does take 2 people to put it together, but it is not difficult and takes maybe 1.5 to 2 hours...thanks for the review!
Considering this too as safer way to introduce lifting to tweens/teens that full rack. Are you finding it was the right move in this regard with your kiddo?
@@shish_taouk He will come around to it. I’m proud that he made videos about the QuickLock dumbbells and the Super bench and all the accessories though. Come on Coop! I dare you! Make an IM2000 video lol 🙏🏻🙏🏾🙏
I bought a fit505 multifunctional smith machine about a year ago and have been super happy with it (as beginner). Has smith, uprights for barbell standouts, two cable pulleys for weights (not weight stack), pullup bar, and some storage hooks for weights and attachments. I definitely notice its definitely not as good as a more expensive quality machine but at the price only $1600 canadian including shipping you get alot of value. I'd be curious to see a comparison of these types of machines if you haven't already
After 3 years of coop & learning about gauge steel measurements, guide rods, mounting/finding studs, safety's & the million diy stuff I watched. I now can build one or refurbish a used one if I wanted lool.
Coop , I just purchased a SYL Trolley system, it’s very similar to the Bully Glider system , trolleys take a standard Olympic bar for Smith machine exercises and weight holders and barbell hooks also bearing rollers UHMW . HEAVY gauge steel and well made . 399$ and free shipping 🤙
I picked up a parabody smith machine with low row and lat pull down for free on Craigslist Squeezed it into my single car garage gym and use it every day
Calling it 2mm steel IS simpler than calling it 14 guage. Guage is a stupid measurement. 99 percent of the world uses metric and millimetres and Amazon products are available in 99 percent of the world so they are just catering to their largest audience when using millimetres. Get with the program America!
I agree but as an individual American what can I do? If I use metric nobody else knows what the hell im talking about unless its liters or maybe grams - god we're so fucking assbackwards here 😂😂
Deltech also has a linear bearing smith for $900. No lat pulldown. Might be a good "in between" option. I've been looking for a smith rack combo under 83". Hopeful something is coming out soon or if you know of one that exists please let us know!!
Get the Deltech. 81" height. For $900 to your door, not bad. Just wish the barbell it uses was more like a real barbell, but it's not too bad. Just needs more knurling. Deltech equipment is often overlooked.
@@SaintBernard-n8r I don't own the Deltech Smith machine. I may, we'll see. If I did I'd take the barbell piece and send it to one of the small gym machine shops and get more knurling. Other than that, it seems you can't beat the quality & price point for this Smith machine - $900. Or you can go EliteFTS and get theirs with a real barbell (they use a Texas barbell - and you can specify), but then pay roughly $4-5k to your door.
Have you done a video or spoke of the Powertec leversystem ? I remember using one in high school and heard conflicting things about results you can get from it
Yep. All-in-one. Smith Machine, Functional trainer, half rack and some of them even have a separate lat pulldown attachment for the back. Cheaper and more space efficient than buying the three separate. When I eventually sell my Fitness Reality that's gonna be my move.
So heard about smith machines in the 1980's, used one to improve my incline bench to 515 in the 1990's, they are really great, for improving strength, and SAFETY, they have them in a gym, I workout now at,-now in my 60's use like %40-%60 less weight, just concderned with maintaing strength, but under $500 WOW!
Hey Coop. Speaking of Smith machines, any plans to review the new vts bulletproof system and ita functional trainer? Very curious and want you expert opinion on it.
I feel like there is a perfect world where this costs like an extra $100, but instead of separate weight pegs for your smith bar and lat pulldown, the smith bar is attached through cables in the guide rods, which may not be a massive reduction in physical width, but you’d save a ton of space not needing room on either side to load weight
Do you plan on doing a review of the Titan Fitness plate-loaded pull-up machine any time in the near future?????? I rely heavily on your honest reviews and am contemplating buying one.
Have you reviewed the IronMaster smith machine? I used to be in the home fitness business and I loved my Body Solid stuff, but I Loved their smith machine.
@@RonMexico527 I sold both back then (1998-2012). The Body Solid (7 degree) ended up costing a lot more, especially with a 210lb weight stack. In the shop I actually preferred using the Iron Master though. But the prices for either have gone through the roof. I ended up getting a cheaper smith that works great for me.
@@RonMexico527 I thought I replied to this but can't find my reply. :-) I used to sell both. I like the Body Solid Series 7, but it was expensive, especially with the 210lb stack. I also wasn't keen on the 7 degree thing. The Powerline unit just had the plastic bushings. I loved using the Iron Master unit (IM2000). Joys of having a big showroom. I had my shop from 1998-2012. Prices since then have gone nuts. I just got back into working out and bought a pretty unknown unit. Great price for a smith machine w/lat station.
@@RonMexico527 I would not recommend the Powerline unit although it might be different now. I closed my shop in 2012. The plastic bushings were a bitch to put in and most smith machines probably got built missing a few bushings. I would recommend buying a better quality, used model.
Squeeze in a smith machine into the REP 4000 -5000 along with there Athena or Ares, no need to look at all those home version multi functional units out there.
Rit Fitness also has PAT02 Smith Machine attachment 2"x2". Do you know what companies and what racks are being designed for drop in smith machine? Currently have a RML and RP-4000, both 3"x3" would like to add smith attachment to either of them due to space. Thanks
Not bad at all for the price. Would you be able to add the dual pulley system that you show at the end of your video to this smith machine? If so I think I'd do it. Ty

I would like to see a review comparison of Brute Force Australia UX1 Functional Trainer and the RAPT leverage gym vs. Power tec leverage gym and Force USA G20.
Is there anything just like this that also has the functional trainer aspect? The only ones I can find are full racks which I don't really have room for at the moment.
Any thoughts or experience with Body-Solid’s PSM200 smith machine? Only 79” high which helps with low ceilings and not much more than ritfit at the moment
Once Rep comes out with a smith machine attachment I’m all in with them. Until then, staying with my cheapo ForceUSA stuff. Most hate on the smith but it has soo many uses for me and my wife that it has become invaluable. In my younger days, heavy barbell work is awesome. But where I’m at in life now, a smith is preferred.
I wish they would have put all of the money into the smith machine aspect and completely got rid of the cables. Most of us already have a lat low row, and would rather have a slightly better smith.
Maybe they desigh for stability and cable utility(latpulldown, lowrow) is very good for beginners and intimidate if you gone to business just sell to some one new. BX it cheap no one hope or use it to 200-300lb
Nah a lot of people don't have room for a whole separate Smith machine so the combination as one is a definite plus there's a lot of good machines out there for a decent price with cables and a Smith machine and it doesn't take a lot of money to strengthen one up
@@WtfYouMeanDude where are all these affordable smith machines? I agree there are a ton of cable systems for relatively cheap. But there are basically no Smith's under 1000-1500. I am old enough to remember the smith machine hate train when every fitness influencer jumped on or went the opposite route for shock value . I've never liked it . Just my own preference , i am a free weight guy , i will die by dropping a dumbbell on my head one day . It is not useless or a waste of space tho , it has very niche uses and that is probably where the hate started . Oh you are using a smith machine ? your stabilizers must be super weak , your knees must hurt , your shoulders must be bad . So it was associated with weakness . It is a great tool to recover from injury tho .By taking away the need for stability it lets you work the muscle , get the blood flowing to where the injury is so it can heal better or faster . But just like with most home equipment i have to say . Do not spend your money on this , you CAN make this out of wood and pipes , you can make a squat rack ,a lat pulldown , anything you want you can make for cheaper at the same quality . Stop consuming !

So it's the mullet of racks? 😂
good to know. i’m curious about the Prestera Smith attachment - curious what the price was if you don’t mind sharing?
Can't go wrong with Eleiko
Did that mount easily onto the Rep rack without modification? How tall is your Rep rack?
Been telling you for years to checkout the Ironmaster IM2000. Hope you read this Coop! 😊
@@shish_taouk He will come around to it. I’m proud that he made videos about the QuickLock dumbbells and the Super bench and all the accessories though. Come on Coop! I dare you! Make an IM2000 video lol 🙏🏻🙏🏾🙏
Thanks for the review. I would like to see a review of budget leg extension / leg curl rack attachments.
The price went up, it is now $539.99
I bought a fit505 multifunctional smith machine about a year ago and have been super happy with it (as beginner).
What about the RitFit hack squat leg press?
Ritfit has released a newer version of this with bearings and solid guide rails. On Amazon, almost the same price.
How is it?
Ritfit leg press hacksquat???
I picked up a parabody smith machine with low row and lat pull down for free on Craigslist
Squeezed it into my single car garage gym and use it every day
How are you liking it for squats, etc.?
Calling it 2mm steel IS simpler than calling it 14 guage. Guage is a stupid measurement. 99 percent of the world uses metric and millimetres and Amazon products are available in 99 percent of the world so they are just catering to their largest audience when using millimetres. Get with the program America!
I agree but as an individual American what can I do? If I use metric nobody else knows what the hell im talking about unless its liters or maybe grams - god we're so fucking assbackwards here 😂😂
Ritfit Squat rack/Smith machine combo, plus Titan fitness Lat tower/low row combo.
How would this compare to the IM2000?
Is there any way to make the pulleys hold more than 165lbs? Would changing the pegs and pulley system make it hold more?
Deltech also has a linear bearing smith for $900. No lat pulldown. Might be a good "in between" option. I've been looking for a smith rack combo under 83". Hopeful something is coming out soon or if you know of one that exists please let us know!!
Get the Deltech. 81" height. For $900 to your door, not bad. Just wish the barbell it uses was more like a real barbell, but it's not too bad. Just needs more knurling. Deltech equipment is often overlooked.
@@Fathom555how’s this holding up? Is it pretty quiet?
@@SaintBernard-n8r I don't own the Deltech Smith machine. I may, we'll see. If I did I'd take the barbell piece and send it to one of the small gym machine shops and get more knurling. Other than that, it seems you can't beat the quality & price point for this Smith machine - $900. Or you can go EliteFTS and get theirs with a real barbell (they use a Texas barbell - and you can specify), but then pay roughly $4-5k to your door.
A tutorial on how to set this up would be incredible! Could one person set this or other equipment up for their garage gym?
Hey Coop, what’s the best way you’d recommend weighing this Smith Machine down. I’ve got horse stall mats on a concrete garage floor.
I think I will buy the wheel bearings you recommended is it the 90 mm or the 115 mm that I would need? Thank you.
This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for the video.
Have you done a video or spoke of the Powertec leversystem ? I remember using one in high school and heard conflicting things about results you can get from it
What about this compared to the sunny health & fitness smith machine? I don’t need lat pd or low row.
I love the idea of a smith machine + functional trainer. I’m considering ordering up a Major Lutie B52 and would love to see a review on that thing.
Yep. All-in-one. Smith Machine, Functional trainer, half rack and some of them even have a separate lat pulldown attachment for the back. Cheaper and more space efficient than buying the three separate. When I eventually sell my Fitness Reality that's gonna be my move.
I reviewed it if you wanna check it out!
Hey Coop! Please review the Mikolo M4 Smith Machine
OH ITS THE RIGHT VIDEO, IYKYK
What happened to the previous video? I watched half of it before it was gone.
@@populer208What was the other one?
@@TxHoneyBeesame title but video was about a power rack with a functional trainer
Pls review Bullet Proof’s VTS Rack Attachment (Smith Machine). It’s genius and should be able to use it for REP and Rogue racks. Thank you!!
Doesn't come out until at least May though
Smith machines are good for hypertrophy and also when you are dealing with injuries.
Can u review bullbar I think it’s a cool concept but want to see if it’s worth buying
Excellent review, Coop. Appreciate the details and your suggestions as well.
That adjustable bench on their website looks pretty good considering the price. Hip thrust machine/bench looks pretty good as well
Are you able to do cable leg workouts? Kickbacks, lateral kickbacks, leg curls etc.
Definitely review any Smith Machine attachments. I’ve been waiting for one so I can upgrade to a better rack.
Just get the M1. Rack, 2x2x1, upgraded smith, and dual trolley cable crossover/lat pulldown. At 1k….you can’t do better
Any reviews on products that turn your power rack into a smith machine attachment?
Please review the ritfit and gmwd leg press hack squat machines!
Hey did you have the ironmaster or body solid smith machine?
@@RonMexico527 I sold both back then (1998-2012). The Body Solid (7 degree) ended up costing a lot more, especially with a 210lb weight stack.
In the shop I actually preferred using the Iron Master though. But the prices for either have gone through the roof. I ended up getting a cheaper smith that works great for me.
@@RonMexico527 I thought I replied to this but can't find my reply. :-)
I used to sell both.
@@shaned7793 Would you recommend the powerline unit? Plastic bushings aren’t ideal, but couldn’t you just replace them if they break?
Thanks
Those arrows at 1:25, I expected them to have a knurling 😁
Not bad at all for the price. Would you be able to add the dual pulley system that you show at the end of your video to this smith machine? If so I think I'd do it. Ty
Can you switch the barbell? To an Olympic bar
Thank you very much for the awesome video. Would you recommend this for a budget low row and lat machine or would you recommend something else? If something else what would you recommend. I don't need the Smith machine funtion. Any light you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the awesome videos.
Any chance you’re going to review slant boards/slant pedestals? Thanks in advance!
Coop needs to review the PIVOT Bed ASAP!
can you replace the plastic bushings with real bearings?
Im extremely intrested in this machine, but i need to know, does it give the option to use plain 1" CAP style plates, or is it just Olympic plates?
What i think you ned in homegym is a cabelcross a smithmachin barbells and a god bench. you can top it up whit a power rack
How hard is it to put together? Can you buy it with assembly?
I would like to see a review comparison of Brute Force Australia UX1 Functional Trainer and the RAPT leverage gym vs. Power tec leverage gym and Force USA G20.
Anyone know what that red light saber light is called? Looks super cool!!!
Can the pull down bar be fitted with a pair of sling attachments or similar for my feet, to allow assisted pull ups?
Also, how much weight would you need (plates) to stabilize and use this properly? For a regular person not a bodybuilder lol
I could be wrong but maybe they meant 500lbs per side capacity for the BB
Just got a valor be-11 shipped for $932 a few weeks ago. Much better quality. Already have a pulldown machine .
How’s this holding up? Is it loud or pretty quiet?
When you review the Bullet proof vts can you show how it would work if you have the athena already?
Coop for a tween / teen just starting to lift is a Smith machine the way to go wrt safety? If so, this one may just fit the bill
I absolutely LOVE the budget series!
My comment was that I wish this company would've put more money into the smith aspect of this rather than a cheap cable system.
@@jeremy242I just hopped on Amazon and the first page of results for smith machine included about half a dozen machines between $500 and $999. I'm in the US though so..... your results may vary
@@jeremy242where are they? Well they aren’t bought new bud they are found on facebook marketplace and are commercial grade. Not these chinesium machines made of 18 gauge steel.
Americans no longer have to tools, knowledge , or desire for diy. The cost of raw material often is so close if you don’t own the tools and can do it in an hours it doesn’t make sense
@@pulkpuller If you need to start with tools , then absolutely do not try to build things .
The price of tools is indeed high + the person would have no skills . This is in fact my bad and i apologize for my ignorance
Can you review the new bells of steel all in one functional trainer? Looks like one of the cheapest all in one options where you can bench and have a functional trainer.

But not a leg press fan and i spend 120$ for useless not safe leg press add on equipment.
They are saying each side of the bar can have 500lbs, so yes, 1000lbs. Does that mean you should load 1000lbs on this? No. Just like any machine, you shouldn't max out it's rated capacity. And again, the 165lb capacity on the back is for each side.
