My 10 year old Daughter is quite the little businesswoman. She has decided to collect nightcrawlers and sell them for fishing bait. Normally I grow my warms rite in my permiculter system but I want to support her endeavor. It nothing for me to add to my sign (Bait/Nightcrawlers $2.50 doz). We live just a few miles from a huge lake and the fishing boats go by daily. I will be sharing this with her. She can learn and do this all on her own.
I used a moist piece of cardboard to put over the holes in the bottom... That was because i was initially worried about the dirt falling through. Worked well for me. But, maybe wasn't necessary. Excellent video! Also, I foraged my own worms from the earth, although would've been WAY less time consuming had I purchased them (from you!) Also, I keep my bin INDOORS since I live in an apartment building. Have had it going on for 5 years now!
Planning on catching some night crawlers for mine also, since I do that anyways for fishing lol I always say why buy something you can get yourself?... About how many night crawlers do you think would fit in this size tub? I'm fairly new to this worm farming stuff, but looking up the best ways possible to do it.. plan on using that worm tea for my garden some day lol.
Crystal Emerick maybe 30-40 or so... That's if they're definitelynightcrawlers, and not the smaller earth worms. The smaller earthworms are what I have in my bin Also, if youre handy, you can install on the bottom bin a drainage like a cooler would have, and drain the "worm tea" out. Also, my worms have always managed their population well depending on the amount of food available. But, I also use mine to fish, and I feed the small worms to my betta fish. And every now and again I give a bunch (like 50) to my friend to give to her chickens. I also layer the top of mine, Everytime with newspaper shredding so my bin didn't become to moist. And extra shredded paper for the times I add an abundance of food to the bin. I also find, if you have the time, to chop the food bits up real small. And in all honesty, for myself, it was the "trial and error' approach that allowed me to "master" my bin. Goodluck!!
@@jsaabnh Thank you so much for the information! I think I pretty well have a good idea of what to create and how to maintain it! 😊 I prefer night crawlers for fishing so I may make 2 separate bins, one for earth worms and one for night crawlers, I like your idea for easy access to the worm tea also!
Thank you so much for taking your time to explain this well. My 6 year old son loves worms and I have wanted to start compost for the love of our planet for quite some time so we are starting this project together tomorrow! Here's to making big changes to the amount of waste we contribute!!! ❤
Thanks Greg for a great video. The worms I bought from you are being raised inside of my house. I do not have a lid over them and they are doing great. I have news paper over them and just feed them in the middle of the contaners I have them in. They are doing great. Thanks for all you do.
I used to grow worms. Good vid, ty. No internet back then. Had to get books from the library. We had plenty of catfish bait, and I put them in my other plants.
Man that’s awesome, I’m gonna buy one of those magic bait worm farms they sell at sportsman’s warehouse. It comes with the bedding and food… I’m mostly wanting bait for fishing since a cup of worms is so expensive and I fish a lot… lol But we’ll see how that goes and maybe I’ll get into the bigger farms… Thanks for the videos, I can tell you’re very knowledgeable about the subject and it’s very interesting…
7:00.......those peepers are killing me. Haven't heard em singing in years, ever since I've been back home in the country. This metroplex doesn't even have crickets between the highway noise/sirens/traffic/planes day in and day out
LOL okay, you win, I just saw the comment a few times and the “All hail” caught my attention. I guess he needs to just accept what has been bestowed and attach the name to his channel. 😊
Hey Greg! Love your videos (and worms!). Can I keep my nightcrawlers that I use for fishing with the Red Worms? Someone told me they won't do well if I keep nightcrawlers in with them. Thanks for all you do!
I’m research how to for fishing worms so I don’t have to buy them every time I need some. Been taking my son (2yo) fishing and he is loving going out fishing and on the boat. We use 4-8 worms then I put them in the flower beds but I’d like a way to keep them so I don’t have to go in the stores to get them. Great video. Thank you
I’ve watched some videos including yours and I’ve decided on a 3 story bin method. I plan to take your suggestion and design some kind of light plywood (lauan) sandwiching the lid with a screen in between (somehow) I’m in the planning stages in my head right now. Lol... Anyway, after this choranavirus deal is finished, I’ll draw it out on paper and pick up my supplies. Then if you’ll be so kind. I’ll let you know the dimensions and ask your advise on how many worms to order from you. I’ll start with this one and after working out any bugs etc. I’ll go ahead and start several more. Thanks...
Greg will my compost worms survive in a large garden bed if I make sure there is plenty for them to eat? Will they multiply and improve the soil? Thanks for your videos.
I added about 3lbs in one of my beds last year and they are all over now (other beds as well)... not as dense as a bin. It won’t hurt to put them in if you have the extra, and they will live as long as you have food for them. I use no till/no dig methods and let leaves and sticks bio degrade right in the beds. However more and more indigenous worms seem to be taking over now and my worm bins are fed high nutrient foods so their castings can be added later with an extra “umph”. Idk if that helps any? Good luck and have fun they’re forgiving little critters.
organ donor thanks fo your reply and info. They sure love the kitchen scraps and Ive buried crushed dry leaves as well. I started off with no till woodchip but my soil became water repellent with no guts, so now I’m having to till to get the leaves and free cow manure into it. I’m in Australia 🇦🇺 and plan to sew a chop and drop cover crop soon, then back to no till. . Another month before my first castings harvest. Gardening is such a challenge, I think that’s why I love it. My efforts have been rewarded as I made 10 pound of tomatoes into sauce this season
Yes, barren soil will become “hydrophobic”. chop and drop will get your organic matter up, so it’s a great practice! In a matter of 1 year your soil will be leaps and bounds better with no till and continue to improve. I also use no till 😃. Try a crop of radishes , then hit with buckwheat. Both have seemed to “loosen” my soil up. Also use compost teas to inoculate the soil and they will turn that organic matter over quick. I use an air lift and aerate worm castings, compost, seed sprouts, and kelp meal (feed what’s left in the bad to the worms). All of this in small quantities goes a LONG way. My indigenous worms have also increased in population 100 fold. Also I started out exactly the same way. With wood chips and leaves 👍🏽. The benefits from worm castings alone are to much to list. Combined with a couple of other inputs like malted barley and kelp maybe some neem seed meal from time to time , and nothing can beat it. As a child i had an uncle who had 4 acres of red worm beds. His gardens were so prolific he made a living selling to market. Along with worm castings and red worms. People are now getting the idea and I sure do wish he was around to see it.
organ donor once again thanks for such an informative reply. I’m digging in cow manure “sludge” at present, despite being an advocate of no till. The manure needs to be mixed into soil. To get the root fungi back into soil, I’m planting a cover crop of vetch when and IF the rains come here in Australia. Then I will chop and drop and switch to Ruth Stout method of gardening as it’s much, much, much less work and little watering and as we only received half our annual rainfall last year and probably less this year because of geoengineering, I need to conserve water. Oh, I added too much and too small pieces kitchen scraps to worms so now I need to remove scraps, add cardboard and dry out their home. Bought a new worm bin yesterday with much larger surface area. Been nice corresponding with you.
Great video! Thank you. I have a couple of questions…can you use a bag of compost from the store to start them off? Also, how many worms can you start in this size bin? Thanks so much 🐛
How did you build your wooden worm bins I've been looking for a good design or way to keep my worms outdoors but I have to worry about skunks and raccoons and other creatures that might want to eat my worms

I have about 2000 red worms in a tote with 8 in. Of compost. I bought them from Greg a week ago and they’re going great. I have a couple gallonns of frozen cherries from my tree that are 4years old so I food process the cherries and dig a furrow in the tot, then put 1/2 in. Compost over them. They seem to swarm the Cherri’s , I was wondering how often I should replenish the cherries. I put about a cup in at a time. As a side note, can I put Local night crawlers in with them? Thanks
Hey Greg, I am in NC. I have tried to raise red wrigglers several times in my life, but I could not make the happy enough to stay or live. I think with what I have learned from you I might be able to build my own herd. I would like to start out with plastic containers like the ones you had in this video. But.....what do I do here in NC when the temps get down in the 20s and low 30s for a week at a time during Jan - Feb. And ..... how much horse manure to the peat? What ratio? I was told by another farmer a 50 / 50 mix? Is that correct? I don’t remember hearing you say on any previous videos. Just want to make sure before I place the order for worms.
I remember you mentioned using some burlap, I was just wanting to know if you recommended using it just above the sand at the bottom of the container, or at the top as a cover, or as both??? Thank you sir
I’ve been watching your videos and find them very informative. I want to purchase red wigglers but can’t open your site. I’m just wondering if you’re still selling them
Hey, quick question I'm sure you have answered many times. Do you only use composted horse manure to start your worm farm or bin? Or if I get horse or cow manure do i need to mix with something else for the bedding? Thank you
Hi @Green Gregs I am a new subscriber watched your 5 keys video before this one, but I am still wondering how I can have a worm farm in South Florida during the hot months we have here? We also have all kinds of critters here that will eat what does not bake or steam them to death. I have a small spinning composter I got for free but from your previous video I imagine they would get to hot and probably crushed when I rotate the bin. Could I use the biomass of the ground to keep something like this cool by burying most of it like you mentioned in your 5 things video? What about our rats and raccoons here won’t they chew through it or a raccoon might just rip it open. Just don’t want to kill those helpful worms once I order them or have them be a critters treat. Thanks and great teaching videos.
Lewis Sharpe here’s a recipe Lewis. Drop the worms into rapidly boiling water for one minute. Add plenty already roasted, mashed garlic, salt and black pepper. Yum yum.................Only joking.
Actually the redworms are used by some as a nut substitute in cookies and brownies! Put' 'em im water, let 'em extrude their castings, wash. dry and ground to a powder. Some people have eaten them raw. I would not advise that though, unless you are in a survival situation.
What the others have said. But realize that if you get it directly from a farm, it may not be composted so it will not be ready to put directly into a garden. Also, "manure" sold at stores is actually composted manure so it is ready-to-use and it usually isn't really straight-up manure, it is mostly other materials with about 10-20% manure. The only manure I know of that can be used "fresh" without composting is rabbit manure.
