Absolutely loved your reaction to this. You want layers? Well, you found the right artist. Ren is different. I believe he's a once in a lifetime kind of artist. On top of that, he's just a good person. I'm here for this journey of you diving into his catalogue. You've earned my sub. I suggest following this one up with Sick Boi as it directly relates to this song..
I haven't even finished watching your reaction yet but I just wanted to edit my comment to stay that you definitely hit the nail on the head about his medical condition. He has Lyme's disease but went misdiagnosed for about 10 years and was prescribed medications that in the end did more damage than good. He's the currently getting special treatments in that seemed to be helping him somewhat but they are not a cure. This song in particular went viral and over the last year I've watched as his fan base has grown and have watched him show the world what is like to be humble and kind regardless of his newfound fame. I can't remember who the original person is but ran quoted this person and said that a rising tide lifts All ships. That is what he has done for no reason other than to help complete strangers. The community that he has grown is like none I've ever seen before. Welcome.

Edit: Oh wow! No way!!! Thanks for sharing this information, this makes a lot of sense. Sounds like such an unfortunate story, but im glad to hear that his spirits have remained lifted despite the adversity he faces. This is a channel all about positive vibes, as you'll hopefully come to know, so I am excited to go on this journey of getting to know him as an artist and as a person. Sounds right up my alley. Thank you for taking the time to share with me, it is much appreciated!

    Welcome!
I like to think that Ren's last gift is the community. This song is special, and it rings out from a place of chronic illness. The chronic illness community is often called invisible, because of fear and stigma. Illness is not something people want to discuss. But it's necessary. People need to understand the difficulty we go through. Ren has not only provided a voice. He's inspired others to be voices. The necessary conversations are happening. We can support each other, and won't be so alone.
The rising tide IS raising all ships. And it's beautiful to watch.

@@nm44Sergie not true. It is impossible to shoot a wide, hand held close shot and half a second later have a full body shot without being two takes. Absolutely impossible. After 40+ years of shooting I can guarantee that. Also they insert some cut scenes where Ren is not wearing a mic so the mic appears and disappears multiple times in the same 30 second piece of footage and then there’s the gown length variations which are also other shoots. Happy to send you the photo proof if you still need to believe this is a composite of the three cameras and one take.

@@nm44Sergie The audio is one take, live and lightly balanced in post from miked guitar, lapel mike, camera mike and perhaps the corner mikes seen in Chalk-Outlines. (with the talk at the end, iirc from a different take) The video is spliced from multiple cameras covering the live performance, but it does seem as if there are a few brief segments spliced in from a different one-take and synced to the continuous audio track... his hem line does a few things that don't seem congruent with a single performance.

Here is some additional information on Ren's story that I gathered from old newspaper interviews, articles, and Ren's public livestreams and posts. A handful of people frequently post an earlier version of my comment to various reactions that they copied and pasted verbatim, so if this is a repeat just ignore this comment. I keep editing the information, as needed, and have removed details about Ren that some found to be too personal, such as his full name and D.O.B. All the information here was gathered exclusively from sources Ren personally approved for public release.
Ren is a Welsh musician/independent artist/producer, self-taught multi-instrumentalist. He pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, Ren began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures, which eventually caused him to discontinue his studies and return home. In addition, Ren was signed by Sony Records in 2010 and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point that he was unable to go on; consequently, his contract with Sony was dissolved. Ren would later relocate to Brighton.
Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led him to experience psychosis and develop PTSD. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure.
Ren is in Calgary, Canada for at least six months (Summer of 2023), undergoing treatments such as IV therapy and other interventions five days a week, as well as surgeries (wisdom tooth removal and cavitation surgery). His Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder (MCAD), which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, and adrenals as well as his bones/joints. Hence, Ren is receiving additional treatments for this previously undiagnosed condition. He recently took a break from treatments and returned to the UK to visit family and friends, and to produce some very ambitious musical projects to be released soon.
Let's keep supporting Ren as he undergoes his treatments. Check out and subscribe to his channel; if you are a content creator, ask your audience to subscribe to Ren. Ren's YT channel just surpassed 1 million subscribers. and his videos have garnered millions and millions of views. Listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to the world, and his work is important in these troubling times. Someone has finally created a Wikipedia page for Ren, so there is additional information available.

Instant sub! Prepare yourself for the subs from the RENegades. We love watching people find him for the first time and go down this rabbit hole of music that he has. He is a genre bender. He is from Wales, but moved to Brighton after his best friend, unalived himself by jumping off of a bridge. Ren was bitten by a tick and for the next 10 years he was missed diagnosed as having a mental disorder when he actually had Lyme’s disease. They prescribed him so many of the wrong medication’s that he developed psychosis. He is currently in Canada trying to reverse some of that damage medically. So now he makes his music to bring awareness to mental illness, violence and world corruption. Don’t get me wrong. He definitely does songs just for fun without any deep meaning. He is a genre bender. He’s also excellent doing live street performances with his band called The Big Push. Be careful you might become a Renegade with the rest of us. If you want more of his storytelling, then definitely do the Tale of Jenny and Screech (full version). People call it bardcore. Some of his deeper songs are Chalk Outlines, Crutch, How to be Me, and For Joe. If you want to see him rap, then I would suggest The Hunger, Genesis, Power, Losing it, Fisher Retake and Murderer.

Ok, I've been going backwards chronologically through your Ren reactions, and it looks like this was the genesis - this one was my first introduction to Ren, as well, about a year ago. I hope you'll continue to explore his catalogue. I truly believe that Ren is a musical prodigy, a talent that the world gets to see once in a generation. I once heard Ren say in an interview that he "sees the shapes that music makes" in his mind, and then he figures out how to make instruments create that same shape. Ren is entirely self-taught on multiple instruments, he has an amazing voice, he's a poet and a visionary. And he also seems to be just a really cool, genuinely good human, which may be the most remarkable thing of all, given everything that he's been through. Looking forward to more Ren reactions, and I'm also going to check out your other reactions. I'm pleased to have been introduced to you!

Just discovered your channel and your insight?...Chef's Kiss. We are witnessing a true Ren-aissance, like the bard's of yore, the storyteller, the entertainer and the keeper of lore. I do hope you delve deeper into all that is Ren, his layers run deep and wide and in my opinion the most transformative artist of our time. The last artist who affected me so viscerally and emotionally...Was Prince. Join us down here in the rabbit hole of Ren, there is far more depth and breadth to be discovered. Peace.

Subbed for the Ren Rollercoaster! Having your theater background, I suggest going right for the kill shot and hit Tale of Jenny and Screech (Full). It will blow your mind. After that, peel the layers. This guy has more musical diversity than anyone out there. See Chalk Outlines for raw singing ability and emotion. Great reaction!

Just subscribed. Great reaction. Layers is what Ren is made of. His music transcends multiple genres. While having his own style he also pays great respect to those that came before him. In his song 'Murderer" he pays homage to Barrington Levy, Dr. Dre, Django Reinhardt (1930s blues guitarist), and a few more.
Dig into his solo stuff, but don't moss his collaborations. Duets with Chinchilla, Sam Tompkins, and Eden Nash, and his band "The Big Push.
Most of his music has a positive message.
Looking forward to more of your Ren reactions and will check out your library too.
Lastly, thanks for being open about your own dark moments.

Ren's mad talented. I just came across your "Tales" reaction (-> rest of your channel), so you probably already know this, but in addition to everything you mentioned in his tool box, he also plays a bunch (12?) of instruments (usually guitar, piano, bass, drums) that are primarily self-taught, he composes, produces his own beats (actually how he first earned money), and creates his videos that he thinks of as part of his songwriting process (he often does them with videographer Samuel Perry-Falvey, often one-takes, often live audio). Oh, and he beat boxes 😊. Unique individual who meet his challenge of being bedridden by reading, philosophizing, practicing and writing - a lot of time. While I listen most often to his songs that lift me up (Humble, Power, Ready for You, What You Want, Hold On, etc.), I think "Illest of Our Time" is exceptional lyrically. Doubling as medically ill and flexing in 90s sense of the word, the last half of the song required me reading the lyrics before decoding the cleverness. Fun video, lots of bars, sonically pleasing - highly recommend.
Two great reactions, so I subbed and will now search for your Ren journey, There’s at least a little bit of everything in his discography.- genre or mood. You never know what the next song will sound like. Or, in the case of his new album's first song, "Seven Sins," you get 5 songs in one.

Welcome to the rabbit hole of Rens artistry. His music runs the gammut from this type of bardcore story telling brilliance, to old school rap beats (see, What You Want), new rap flows (see Masochist), to reggae inspired beats (see his acoustic version of Murderer). He also was in a really fun band called The Big Push which played incredible covers (see their live I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop; or their Bongo Bong cover). Just wonderful fun music. There are so many more incredible songs from him as well as the Big Push. A truly once in a lifetime artist. subbed.

The entire creative process of this song and it's delivery both in audio and video format is phenomenal. The hopeful side of Ren plays a lighter, more in tune riff on the guitar, whereas as soon as he switches over it's more jaded and distorted, aggressive and chaotic. Every time it's hopeful Ren speaking the light is on his face, and whenever his dark inner thoughts speak he's in the shadows.

Absolutely had to sub, and you were only about a minute into this. I'm 60 years old and have been drawn into not only the world of Ren but so many other artists and genres that I never would have imagined or found thanks to people like you and other reactors. Your sight into the story and breakdown were spectacular. On the filming of this, yes, it was actually a live, one-take using several cameras. It was then pieced together for the final video. If you continue on the journey into his music, you'll find that very often they are live, one takes.

Great reaction too and I will subscribe as I can't wait to watch your reactions to all the other amazing songs in Ren's catalogue. Do yourself a huge favour and react to the other artists in Ren's close circle. His groups, Trick The Fox and The Big Push are not to be missed, as are Sam Tompkins, Chinchilla, member of his group, Romaine Axisa has written some beautiful songs worth catching. It's an almost never-ending rabbit hole so dive in, there isn't a bad song in there.

What a fantastic analysis of this performance and performer. Ren is an amazing artist. I’ve followed his ascension for the last several months after seeing this video. The talent was apparent from the start. Till this day, I have not heard a song of his I did not thoroughly enjoy. Everything he’s put out has substance, is creative, and just sounds pleasing to the ear. His collaborations are all next level good. And the band he was in, The Big Push, they’re also super talented in their own right. It’s been a fun journey thus far. The RENegades are a fine group, you will get plenty of support if your content is half as good as this. Cheers!

Now less than a month from your reaction Ren got not just a top 10 hit. But a #1 album in the Uk. And now in the top 150 in the US. He has big artists and labels reaching out to him like crszy. He said he is not against labels but he wants to keep full control of what he does without any restrictions and he's not interested in a label right now. His goal is to have his own Netflix series. Combining film and music. Similar to a black mirror type thing but original to himself

Brah, you need to go down this rabbit hole. This guy is insane. Sings raps, storytelling he does it all. If you see tale of Jenny and Screech do all 3 parts cuz they go together. Some reactors f that up then it goes over their heads
