this is prob. a stupid question but is there an easy way to remeber when i have to use I^2 ? EX. if i got the question about the light bulb on my exam ( to find the resistance) i could easly in my head write the formula: P= I* R, instead of P=1^2 *R. If you understand:P why do we use 1^2 here and not when we're finding the resistance in a circut?
If I understand your question...there are three general equations for power. The one you use depends on what you are given, but I do not know of a good way to remember the equations.
Think of it as substitutions. You have V=I*R And P=V*I So if we know that V and (I*R) are equal to each other, we can substitute it into the power formula. Therefore P=(I*R)*I and you can rearrange that to be P=I*I*R Noting that I*I is the same as I^2, we can then rewrite it as P=(I^2)*R
