100% Scorcese is one of my favorite directors. The Irishman is one of the best films in recent times. However, the stuff he is praising is truly horrific and amazing. Aster will have a remarkable career for sure.
I wouldn't say just starting out, just because it was his first feature, doesn't mean he was just doesn't out. Edit: I have absolutely no idea what I was trying to say, yet 2 people upvoted it.
I love how Scorsese has always backed up, championed and supported the horror genre. He gave Peeping Tom (1960) the respect that it deserve by re-releasing it.
@@stupididiot6993 We haven't really seen anything on this kind of level since the Exorcist! and that came out in 1973! But I"m going to watch the new director's cut of The Exorcist this week! I'm glad to see Scorsese's appreciation for Ari Aster and Hereditary. And surprised that he briefly mentions Midsommar also. Though of course not for everyone, they are the rare films in modern times which deserve their hype. Now just need a Scorsese breakdown of The Thing About The Johnsons, lol.
@@warrenphilbert6856 I’ve seen it three times, and it got better with each consecutive viewing. Midsommar I’ve seen six times, and the director’s cut is now my all-time favorite film.

when they are talking about hereditary, they mention the horror elements vs. the family dynamic. I think what makes this film a masterpiece is that the tension comes from the struggle of the family and the horrific scares are actually the release of the that tension. It fucks with your perception about where the fear is actually coming from. Some of the Scare scenes I actually flow right through because the tension was already so high. Great film.
So good to hear Scorses praise Hereditary. It really is one of the best horror movies of all time, right up there with The Thing and The Excorcist. One of thoses films that sticks to you and wonder about for days (maybe even weeks) after you saw it.

This was an odd episode of On Cinema. Both Tim and (guest) Gregg are absent and there was no real movie expertise being given. 2 bags of popcorn for this episode.
The shock of Charlie dying in the manner in which she did and the vulgar directness of it plus the horrifying realness of the repercussions that play out as an out-of-body fever dream was one of the most gut-churning and visceral experiences I've had in cinema in recent years. Despite the dreary subject matter in both Hereditary and Midsommar there's strangely a whimsicality to it that does not make them sink to overly heavy-handed depths; they are 'fun' warped films. And the camera work on Aster's films are unparalleled in recent times. You can obviously see huge Polanski influence laced throughout.
Can the interviewer shut up? This was so incredibly frustrating to listen to. Let Marty finish a sentence. I just want to hear him talk. Only speak when he's doe getting his thought out. Stop incorrectly finishing his sentences. Marty is a big boy. He can do it on his own.

Happy to hear Scorsese talking about Ari aster !!
Scorsese IS a horror movie director disguised as a gangster/drama director. His movies have always scared me the same way any good horror movie would
Well he directed two. Cape Fear and Shutter Island. They are designed like one and are quite terrifying.
Even Taxi Driver. Imagine how the movie would be if it was from Betsy or Iris perspective.
@@victordomort2638 You have a good point but it was from Travis' point of view so no.
Shutter Island's twist scares me tbh same goes to De Niro's final moments in The Irishman, that hit hard man. Make me afraid of getting old
