  • Can books help make readers better human beings? Linda Sue Park talks about how books provide practice at responding to the unfairness in life, and how empathy for a book's characters can lead to engagement in ways that have significant impact in the real world.
Linda Sue Park is the author of many books for young readers, including A SINGLE SHARD, winner of the 2002 Newbery Medal, and A LONG WALK TO WATER, on the New York Times bestseller list for more than two years. She has traveled to 46 states and 16 countries to talk to audiences of all ages about books, reading, and writing.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

That was touchy and brilliant. My own mission in life is: "To change the world one book at the time". Just remember that kids don't do what they are told, they do what they are shown. If you want a child to read and to love reading you need to lead by example. My own parents were mad about books, and now I am too! I also buy lots of books for my own kids, apart from writing my own.

I wonder if you acknowledge the *huge* influence that Salva's adoptive family has undoubtedly had in supporting and encouraging his (quite heroic and lucid and simply *amazing*!) venture.
I'm delighted to see that he had access to the support and resources to build a bridge between his Creative and Heart-full ambition, and the mechanics of it's realization! *So* *Many* dreamers suffer the tragedy of watching their dreams wither as resources or doorways remain beyond reach.
SO happy to see his success!
But let us *NEVER* lose sight of the *Priceless* value of a *supportive* *family* behind our Visionaries!
No one is an Island, and Family should be *Cherished* .

I got drawn here from a beautiful story about a Korean family during Japanese colonial rule by Linda Sue Park, in which i lost myself today. After reading this book, those inspiring characters, i can’t agree more.

I so empathize with you, Linda~ My book on loneliness, hopefully will allow children to see that there is hope in friendship! My daughters were all taught,at an early age, the pricelessness of the written word. All the best, Carmel Rivello

My kids favorite is a new book called “Tony And His Mythical Friends”. They love the illustrations of the mythical characters. Great story about friendship and inclusion. I like it because it opened them up to the idea to go camping and enjoy the outdoors which is great!!

I loved this, particularly how the students seemed to relate to the story of salva. That is the sort of impact I wish to make on students learning. Reading for the development of empathy is a great idea, also for developing empathy when it comes to racism.

Wonder, Crenshaw, All American Boys, A Long Walk To Water, lets share the books that inspire and illuminate. We, and our children, develop empathy when we read the right books. We all have a responsibility and challenge, to share quality books.

Sudan? I know the lost boys. We went to high school together in the U.S. My family lived on refugee camps. My dad helped them settle in to the U.S. We went to church together. Our country is now called, South Sudan. I never went back home, but we greet each other, from time to time.

The Holy Book , the bible is the book of all books that children needs. It is for all generation. It may be the most widely circulated book but ironically the least read. Man's mind is hostile to God because of sin. Read the Holy Book and know what God has in store for you...
