  • This Adventure takes us on one Tough Off Trail Hike with Truly Stunning and Unique Vistas of Enormous & Fragile Rock Towers and Walls reminiscent of desert rock formations but in an Alpine setting at over 11,000ft, all during the peak Aspen Leaf color change!
    Please note: Flying a drone from within a Wilderness area is not permitted, this includes 95% of the Castle Mill trail. Much of the ridge where I climbed is outside of and runs along the Wilderness boundary. Please know the rules surrounding drone flights before taking your drone to this area.

      Thanks Vasu, It was amazing to see as a hike but the drone literally blew my mind! Hopefully yours too, LOL! I think I'm actually more afraid of the mountain bikes, the riding you guys don't see. One of my buddies is like a ridging solder, the more death defying the better for him, he is in his 30's. The Desert is ROUGH too. I took a small digger on a cliff/ledge Moab trail, barely saved my bike from a ride over the 200ft cliff. I ride 3 days a week or more and just love it. Did a few BIG rides in the Book cliffs behind my home in Fruita last week on my NEW Enduro E bike! that I LOVE! Amazing rough motorcycle trails are so fun on it. Last solo one got a bit scary though, just so long, getting colder, short erdays, battery anxiety after some insane steep climbs then at the top knowing return was a long shitty option and wondering if the canyon exit would be reasonable after recent rains, the mud here can be like peanut butter of death. And all that knowing the canyon is a super gnarly rock crawler route that changes with each rain. . . it had just rained! Turned out fine, a bit muddy but amazing! I figured I could just hooble out dragging my new bike through the mud, unthinkable, but that didn't happen fun techy riding and only a bit.of groveling. I was so beat at the end, the battery fear had me peddling hard and left me with 35% battery. I should have let the bike do more. . . .Hope all is well for you brother, got a cool desert climbing video fresh off the editor, I think you'll like it Brother!

      The lower trail is an awesome mellow hike, the ridge is more of a battle but with a big Payout. . . Enjoy!

    A very interesting climb. A beautiful walk in among the aspen. Stunning drone views. The hoodoos make me think of the tops of the spires of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The recessional erosion looks like an uncolored Bryce Canyon. A fun video. Thanks!

    Awesome stuff...I went to school in Gunny but never got back into these like you have...good on ya! You really should have done some homework regarding the volcanic nature of these...it would have added a lot to the context of what you were showing us.....how things were formed is super relevant....just sayin'...otherwise, first class effort....!!! Your drone work is second to none....just mind blowing. Im a new sub...

      Thank you for the info, I did do lots of research but it was all about making it up there and flying the drone legally. That is a great tip though, even if after the fact, if I find something like that I think I will add some geological backstory. Honestly, I had no idea it was going to be as cool as it was! Thank you for the info!

    Beautiful production, as always, Karl! Your videography is among the best on youTube. Also, thanks much for following the rules regarding not flying your drone over the designated Wilderness Area - wish the others would obey the law too! Kudos!

      Thank you Nick, it was definitely extra research and energy to do it right. I so wanted to go out and fly from a point and show there scale using my body in the towers but that would have been wrong. I should have talked more about that in the video. . .

    Thank you Carl, i’ve tried to find info on this ridge since I spotted it from a commercial flight to Dallas, but thought it was called West elk Peak, so I could never find anything. The transitions between Google earth and drone footage are amazing nice vid.

    • @KarlDeckerPresents
      @KarlDeckerPresents  Месяц назад

      Honestly I am not sure of the proper name, if it has one? The ridge was primitive but well trodden by Elk so pretty doible but the shortcuts up/down the ridge. . . Yikes!

  • @SavonWyant

    Awesome video! I haven't seen any other footage of someone going up that ridge. I have plans to go back there this winter. I'm trying to get to a specific formation/spot.

      You can do it! Just be conservative, there was SO Much loose rock. I really feared going for a short cut escape and getting clipped out or hitting one of those super steep loose gullies, even more gnarly when all those round grapefruit sized rocks are "resting" in their little molds but totally unattached from the ground. . .

    That was insane and the drone footage was amazing! We have hiked the Mill Creek trail many times but you took it to a different level. When you were capturing drone footage do you do a RTH or just fly it back manually? I get a little nervous when flying around a lot of trees. We didn’t do Kebler or Ohio Creek this year as I focused on Ophir and the wavy aspens. I do think the color in the Ohio Pass is one of the best in Colorado. Thanks so much for this video as I have admired and photographed them and that area for years. You took me up high to The Castles and it was great! 😀😀😀😀😀👍👍👍👍👍

    • @KarlDeckerPresents
      @KarlDeckerPresents  Месяц назад

      I'm so glad we got a chance to discover that, I was totally amazed as well, even knowing how cool it was from below. Maybe next year we could do Fall together at Ohio. I really do want to get together. I need to find the time. I know you have a huge wealth of information in our area and I'd like to go 4 wheeling with you. I am getting a new E bike that will take me virtually anywhere and fast, had a Blast on Top of the World Trail, but if we were four wheeling while I was flying, I think that would be totally amazing. I can help you with some Drone settings, and practices as well. I never use RTH and strive to always to keep oriented, it is tough. Using the "compass map really helps, I'll show you how to use that stuff. I used to be a professional Paraglider Pilot and RC glider manufacturer so I've been flying a long time.

    Can I use your gpx? Love this area and trying to avoid Wilderness issues, too. Cool to see that burn area coming back isn’t it?

    • @KarlDeckerPresents
      @KarlDeckerPresents  28 дней назад

      I don't make GPX files, the stuff you see on my maps is my projected route. Honestly I wish my i watch and phone had the battery life to do it. I like having a bread crumb trail but as it is, just shooting video and using the GPS I'm running out of battery and charging on trail, PITA as is. I really need a real watch to do it with more than 1/2 day worth of battery on my i watch SE, so weak! But. . . I also need an i watch on occasion to control my phone camera. . . kinda stuck on that one. This hike is pretty straight forward though IF you just stay on the ridge and, use all trails if you need to know wilderness boundaries.

    It is illegal to fly drones in wilderness areas

    • @KarlDeckerPresents
      @KarlDeckerPresents  Месяц назад

      Yes it is, that is why this ridge was so appealing. I stayed out of the wilderness areas while flying to follow the rules. The wilderness boundary is basically along that ridges sometimes on one side or the other. I think drone noise is annoying and I avoid people too while out of the Wilderness and in this case, if anyone was nearby they were in DEEP trouble! I should have talked a bit more about it in the video.
