Riddim "Fade Away" was created at the height of the roots reggae era. The song of the same name was produced and written in 1975 by guitarist Earl "Chinna" Smith, known, in addition to working with such stars as Bob Marley and Dennis Brown, for recording a huge number of riddims as a session musician. With Junior Byles, the vocalist who sang "Fade Away", Smith met in 1974 at Lee Perry's Black Ark studio, and a year later he himself acted as his producer. Smith was only 19 at the time. Riddim was recorded at the legendary Channel One studio with the participation of Jo Jo Hookim and house band Skin, Flesh & Bones. Minimalist but catchy riddim, combined with Byles' voice is undoubtedly the pearl of root reggae.

..what's the story behind this song?...I don't hear any percussion or guitar......was this a preference,.?..was it a financial decision or weren't there any musicians available on the day?

Perhaps it was economically feasible for the beginner producer Earl "Chinna" Smith. The more musicians you have the more money you should pay for the recordings. Or maybe that was his idea. At that time, minimalist backing tracks with an emphasis on drums and bass were just coming into fashion. Because it was friendly for soundsystem deejays to chanting. We should ask Chinna or Skin, Flesh and Bones band about it..
