    The people commenting of how bad the karate guy is probably has never sparred before, I practiced many forms of martial arts from Kung fu to boxing to Brazilian jujitsu and it’s extremely difficult to keep your stance in a spar, the best stance is a relaxed springy agile stance, this guy has probably done more than uechi and has learnt his own style but his foundation is uechi. The hardest part about sparring is not freezing up and becoming a boxing bag, I give respect the the karate fighter, he did well

    I've instructed both karateka and military as instructor and all I can say is that all people look for their place in the world. Goran here probably thought it was OK as long as he won, which is fair. In that case the title of this video is misleading and not representative. In my eyes this was a simple brawl.
    I actually had a longer reply, but shortly said. There are MANY fighters that don't want to enter the public stage, and quite a few of them are trained soldiers/operatives. MMA/UFC = show.

More experienced karate guy, knew what to expect from the MMA guy, and when they actually went down... he could keep his own. Now 3:10 about is where the problem with MMA comes in. In these fights no eye gouching, head butting etc allowed. Not even in MMA. That karate guy would have gone for eye gouges. Or that is what I would have done. Take the eyes out with the fingers. Not fun but in real life situation... extremely fight ending.

      mizmera EXACTELY! Real karate is not made for the ring. Groin strikes, eye strikes or any other kind of strike from well conditioned fingers and toes, that can shatter wood and stone, are meant to kill and maim not compete in a sporting event.

      While true lots of karate guys and self defense dudes hide behind this excuse. They work through theoretical self defense scenarios which slowly get further and further away from reality as time passes. They also tend to attempted to apply their arts core principles to everything like trying to hammer in a screw.
      Generally speaking a a boxer or an MMA fighter is probably going to more effectively execute a headbutt or groin shot better than someone who has run through a kumite 100 times. He actually knows how to execute techniques under pressure.

      You are correct about one thing. The person with the most experience is more likely to come out on top in the ring, but I rather be that person/experienced with fist, fingers and toes of steal than the guy likely to get a boxer's fracture after one punch in the real world.

    Who the heck is this "MMA" guy? Has he even fought before? I respect that he would compete, but damn...

  • @blackmetalassasin1
    @blackmetalassasin1 7 месяцев назад

    I seriously doubt that the Uechi guy is even a 1st dan but the guy is also limited by the rules of the competition just as much as the "MMA" guy is. I use the MMA term very loosely because it is a mish mash of different styles and not an actual system of fighting. On top of that, anyone who comments against the karate guy for not using vital strikes and open hand techniques, these types of strikes are not allowed in nearly any competetive form. When you have gloves and safety gear used to protect the competetors, it also changes the way a person fights. With the way that the Uechi guy is handling himself, it looks like he is relying more on his conditioning and low targeting as a strategy for himself. By using the low kicking, he is disabling the other fighters legs, this can make it extremely hard for the opponent to kick, stand, or move, and I see the uechi guy striking both the inside and outside of the thighs. The inside of the thighs have a lot of weakness. This applies to the stability of the joints, blood vessles, and pressure points. When the guy was taking him to the ground there were multiple things he could have done, but for anyone with practical expirience, you would know it can be hard to respond when someone has you in a headlock from any angle. This applies to any style. as for the benifit of cross training, this always has merit. the reason is because everyone fights differently and this gives you the ability to learn how to adapt your fighting style and techniques to the opponent, rather than expecting them to be superior fighting methods. In a real life situation, the most important factors that play a role are, how much you train (assuming that you are training correctly and not having sloppy standards) as well as training regularly so your techniques become fluid (high level karate does not have one technique or combo of techniques that are used one after the other, the movements of the practitioner are performed as needed and flow around the movements and stance of the opponent. You always fight for the best position (which is usually from the persons back) If you look at some older competitions from the 60's up to the early 80's you would see that those were bare knuckle full contact competitions and they had more in common with early ufc rules than they do modern karate competitions. modern mma has become very regulated and the rules have changed. Original ufc was bare knuckle, had no weight classes, and what determined a fighters level (who you fought) this was based on the fighters that you fought and beat. Some of the few rules that were in place early on were some pretty base level things (No eye gouging, No fish hooking, No hair pulling, and that you could not grab an opponents genitals) That last one got one of the high level fighters banned for a period of time because he had a fight that he grabbed on his opponents groin and even when the ref was trying to separate them to prevent permenant damage for the other fighter, he still refused. But back to the point, if you can't learn to adjust your techniques to the moment, then you'll likely never be able to apply it in real life.

      Your two points are contradictory. On one hand you say that Uechi Ryu techniques are for self defense only and then you say gloves prevent the use of Uechi Ryu strikes. Also if it’s not for competition then why do the majority f the dojo’s in Okinawa go to competitions?

    • @sacramentouechiryu1539
      @sacramentouechiryu1539 3 года назад +9

      Michael Park
      Uechi Ryu is more than an amalgam of techniques. It’s also the expression of its training modalities. A true fight will not look like kata or bunkai nor does a true Uechi Ryu practitioner need to use deadly force at all time. Control of timing, distance, and your response is just as important as training shoken and boshuken on a makiwara.
      A lot of traditionalists in China claim that competitions aren’t real because they can’t use open hand. Xu Xiaodong showed them the importance of competition. If you’re implying that Okinawans compete just for money your sadly mistaken. Most dojo’s are small and don’t generate a lot of income. The majority of the senseis have day jobs.
      Along with dojo training, sparring be it point or mma has value. By saying that competition isn’t appropriate or that’s it’s not true Uechi Ryu is disrespectful to our fellow karateka and to the art itself. And that disrespect is looked down upon by our seniors. That, indeed, is not Uechi Ryu.

    • @mdub2000
      @mdub2000 3 года назад +5

      @Michael Park yeah your right its a "deadly" art but you can still benefit in sparring like this because of the pressure testing even though its limited by rules....you learn timing and spacing and how to keep a cool mind when the adrenalin wants to go nuts. Nothing to be scared of by loosing just keep gaining experience.

    I'm 15 and have been a Uechi Ryu/ Shugyo Ryu student from my sensei Mulvey for 10 years now and I have to say the Uechi Ryu guy REALLY disappointed me, what I saw was a complete lack of discipline in his attacks and complete lack of THE ACTUAL TECHNIQUES such as yoko Gueri, even the basic punches like Muwashi Skii and Shomen Skii were completely gone. If the Uechi Ryuist was actually using those techniques, this whole thing would of been over in less than a minute.

    • @Weltall8000
      @Weltall8000 9 лет назад +1

      Like others have pointed out, karate in general, is just not designed to be a sport. You'll never get truly effective Uechi karate in the ring, it's designed to severely damage and the weapons it works with are covered up or presumably not allowed in competition, we aren't seeing Shoken tsuki to the throat or Sukuto geri to the knees like we would really do when applying the style.
      While I do enjoy sparring, there are some things to be learned from it, and the occasional friendly round with friends of other styles are all fun and games, but competing with gloves on and not using the devastating attacks we were trained to use, just isn't representative of Uechi. So, when I see things like this, I say enjoy it or don't enjoy it for what it is. The practitioner probably isn't terrible, it's just the rules don't mesh well with what our style is.

    • @robertmurphyMandL
      @robertmurphyMandL 9 лет назад

      A true Uechi Ryuist tho should be able to utilize all of his abilities no matter what, he may need to adjust them a little, but if you can't twerk the technique to the situation, be it a life or death or not, then you have no control over those techniques. One should be able to use sekuto geri but have enough restraint to simply put the person on the floor, not pop your knee joint of place, or use even the most basic block of muashi ukae and then simply pull him in and use showmen ski to his stomach and the sparring, or fight match is over.

    • @Weltall8000
      @Weltall8000 9 лет назад +1

      Robert Murphy I disagree. If you're limiting the weapons (hands can basically only do a standard fist, eliminating hiraken, shoken, tetsui, etc) and targets (can't strike the side of the knee, throat, heart etc) you don't really have Uechi. I totally get having broken or unavailable hands or other weapons in a life or death battle due to circumstances and needing to use palm/wrist strikes or others to the vital areas or shuto geri to the knee or shomen geri to the groin or neck to deal with attackers. But if you're limiting the style so much, you don't have an accurate representation of what it does. Uechi is designed to maim and kill. It is super aggressive and rolls over opponents by breaking them. If that's off the table, it doesn't work. It's like saying you get to use Brazilian Jujutsu, but you cannot go to the ground, it would get destroyed by striking styles in that case.
      Sure, I can hit someone in the thigh with a sokuto geri, but that's not going to stop them like it will when I explode their knee, so the technique is arbitrarily losing a ton of its utility, because of the rules. If I destroyed their knee, I've taken out that leg and I have that huge advantage. If I can only hit their thigh because of the limitation "we're competing not fighting for our lives", they can power through it, tank it and keep fighting. My technique is limited because I can't utilize it the way it was intended, not because they are skilled or I'm unskilled, but because I'm not allowed to. The case could be made that Uechi sucks for competition, but the case could not be made that the practitioner sucks at Uechi because they aren't allowed to do the technique as it was intended. In Uechi sparring or drills, we stop after demonstrating "I would have just blasted your knee" because we know, if one of us just did that, they'd be going to the hospital. And we'd rather not send our training partners to the hospital, because they have to work, and we like training with them.
      I shouldn't need to be a powerhouse with a sokuto geri to hit them in the thigh where they can flex and possibly tank it. Putting their thigh muscle resistance against my attack isn't what my technique was designed for. Martial arts are generally designed for the mechanical advantage, with the least input for the maximum output. I can mechanically destroy a knee for around 12 lbs worth of pressure from the side, that's why I train the sokuto geri, I don't care to try and test its power vs their strongest bone and a huge muscle, I want to destroy a weak spot that will cripple them with little input. That's real Uechi.
      Straight up, I can tank your sokuto geri all day to my thigh I've taken multiple blows with roundhouse kicks straight to the thigh from up to kyudan opponents, but you kick me in the side of the knee with a solid sokuto geri and I will fall down on the first attack. The latter is what our style was designed to do.
      If we're wearing gloves, mouate are arbitrarily inhibited. And frankly, it's not easy to land on trained fighters that don't make haymakers and leave their hands out. On big kicks, they're a little more practical.
      As for shomen tsuki to the stomach, against a trained fighter, good luck with that. If you hit me in the abs with one of those, again, I'll tank that all day, especially if you're wearing gloves. I mean, I've tanked side thrust kicks to the abs in dan testing and continued right on fighting without a break in the action. A shomen tsuki to the abs will not stop me, or any other trained fighter that is paying attention to you. In fact, if you went for that, I'd most likely be blasting you in the face or kidney.
      I really have no idea what you're sparring with, but I fight dan levels and that bullshit won't stop them.
      Not trying to be mean, but Uechi is absolutely not a competitive sport, it is a martial art. It's great at the latter, but it is not designed for the former and when it is taken down because it wasn't allowed to destroy that knee, break that arm, strike that throat, or gouge those eyes, you're not really comparing apples to apples.

I agree that there are a lot of aspects of modern, competitive martial arts that are unrealistic. I agree that rounds shouldn't exist, and that fighters should not wear gloves. I disagree on the referee being unrealistic, because his existence does not impact the fight at all except to enforce the rules, and to protect the fighter once he is no longer able to intelligently defend himself. The mouthguard, to my knowledge, just stops you from losing your teeth. If you were in a real fight and all of your teeth were knocked out, you'd probably continue fighting.

    Hi and sorry I didn't notice your reply. Getting tons of mail lately :). Even though we agree on what type is what, the truth is that too many martial artists are trying to represent their styles, for either honor or school fame, by attending such arranged fights as UFC/MMA/K1 and so on. Take any style of any martial art, apply it correctly and you will win. It's all about skill and proper application. Which leads me back to topic, that this video didn't show any of that.

      Well you have to remember, Uechi-Ryu is deadly and seeing as how this isn’t a self-defense situation, he can only use non-lethal strikes. But Uechi-Ryu has low kicks and punches. It’s similar to Kyokushin. But it also has ground fighting.

    This is not even karate, karate is not for offense fighting and should not be performed in competitions at all. Been a budoka for 25 years mostly training jiujitsu but also karate ( kyukoshinkai) for Sensei Mikael Soderberg and martial art is a last resort to save your life, not for measuring skills for medals.

  • @jackhagendorf8918
    @jackhagendorf8918 10 лет назад +1

    Albeit late to reply, but that's how it is. There is little to no Uechi Ryu used. He's pretty much street fighting. There's no use of any kata techniques or any proper geri. Was this a yellow belt?
    In my opinion he seems to be very unsure about his form, which implies inexperience. That's not to say this guy has no potential, but he's not really representing Uechi Ryu here and I'm pretty sure any serious student of the style would agree with me.
